White Friday occurred during the Italian Front of World War I in 1916, when an avalanche struck Austro-Hungarian barracks on Mount Marmolada, killing 270 soldiers. Other avalanches the same day struck Italian and other Austro-Hungarian positions, killing hundreds. According to some reports both sides deliberately fired shells into the weakened snowpacks in an attempt to bury the other side.
An accurate estimation of the number of casualties from the White Friday avalanches is not available. Historical documents suggest at least 2,000 victims among the soldiers and a few dozens among civilians.
The date 13 December, marked Saint Lucia, a commemorative religious holiday practiced by the majority of Italian Catholics. Though the occurrence of avalanches in the Dolomites Mountains took place on a Wednesday in 1916, the term "White Friday" was used to coin the disastrous day.

And to add a little more information, the bodies can still be found to this day. And during Septemper (2014), two bodies were recovered, one man supposed to be aged 17 and another man aged 18, both blonde and blue eyed, with bullet holes in their heads.

To add on, now, because of climate change, the melting snow and ice are exposing the once entombed bodies.

Excellent reaction. I loved the '80's synth vibe in this song. Chris Roland was involved in writing the music for this song (as well as Joakim as usual) while Par wrote the lyrics. An epic ode to those who never came home. RIP warriors, you are missed and appreciated.

The story "No Bullets Fly" is so strong that I always want to cry with him, a lot of mixed feelings about such a terrible war, there was a place for compassion, pride and resistance. And the fact that after the war was looking for them were not found and were the best friends ... incredibly strong and inspiring

As a bit of added detail, the line "I saw the end of war" is a reference to a quote from George Santayana, a Spanish philosopher and poet from the late 1800s. In a line often misattributed to Plato, he observed that "only the dead have seen the end of war."

The soldiers from this battle remain frozen. Forever on watch and at post. To this day. Remnants of dead empires and forgotten kingdoms. Sabaton is one of the few bands that can capture the essence of that in music and video. Most bands would never even consider touching a subject like this. And its unfortunate. But sabaton keeps consistently capturing the essence of these stories so its great we atleast have them

Blood mountain was a series of battles that took place on Col Di Lana summit that took the lives of tens of thousands. Originally Blood mountain was held by a unit of the German Alpenkorp who were defeated by an Italian attack force. But the Italians took heavy casualties and were pushed back by the Austrians. The Italians eventually took blood mountain by mining out the mountain and planting thousands kilos of nitro gelatin and detonating it. The crater in the side of the mountain still remains, a grim remainder of the deaths on the mountain. Like most of the mountains, it is beautiful.

@@tobiasworner4970 Hello from the USA & thanks for your remark. Very interesting. Many in USA believe European education is better. Also, that most nations naturally concentrate on their own history (good & bad). In USA, we lack WW1 education as it isn't viewed as "US centric." In Europe, WW1 vets are the Lost Generation. In US, they're the Forgotten Generation. Also, WW1 (though interesting to learn about) didn't "solve" anything. Also, the Great Depression & World War 2 cast big shadows. USA became a global power after Spanish/American War, but became global power (we know today) as result of WW2. With the "culture war" here & our educational system (& those in it) politically not always thought of as the most patriotic Americans. That said, it's a generalization. Most American school teachers are hardworking, dedicated professionals with difficult jobs (I'm sure same can be said for German schoolteachers). But, bound by their curriculums. Blaming teachers is like "shooting the messenger." Safe to say many western nations have a lot of issues now. We all need to get our own houses in order & stick together. The past is the past. But, only fools don't learn about & from history. Germany & USA have solid relationship now. Continuing that is to our mutual benefit.

16:23 During both World Wars, but especially the first, fighting in the Alps was relentless and had its own horrors. Instead of the mud of the Western Front the troops of all armies endured intense cold, snow & high winds for months on end - only trips into the vallys allowed them to enjoy any warmth due to the nature of their inadequate clothing and poor rations. Man-made and natural avalanches plus the relentless height induced conditions on top of the viscious fighting killed literally thousands. Many casualties, either whole or dismembered disappeared into the mountain's crevasses and snow blankets and whilst many were recovered at the time they are still reappearing to this day. The horror of the muddy trenches was replaced by blood stained snow which dissapeared quickly to hide the spectacle of lost comrades leaving constant fear of both nature and the enemy.

About the confusion, should you be happy or sad when listening to Sabaton? Well, they are extremely good at that. :) Their masterpiece in that regard is of course "En livstid i krig" that you have already seen. A lot of laughmixed crying in that one. :) But if you (for once) don't want to be confused, you should listen to "Price of a mile." One of my absolute favourites, and one where you are lead into one single emotion right from the first note and there it stays, just growing and growing for the reminder of the song.

One of the best parts of Sabaton is like you said, you kinda don't know how to react.. They sing highly of war but the subtextual and contextual lyrics are about awfulness of war.. so if you like 'em you like the band's music you do 'kinda' like war but also understand the toll it has.. hence you enjoy the heroism of some.. you wouldn't want war but you appreciate wars that has happened and sacrifices ppl have made. Sabaton for purpose, won't glamorize war, but they will speak about heroism.

a little off topic but the worst landslide was The 1970 Huascarán Debris Avalanche occurred on May 31, 1970, when a debris avalanche and mudflow triggered by the Ancash earthquake destroyed the Peruvian town of Yungay and ten nearby villages, leaving up to 30,000 people dead.[1] It is the deadliest avalanche or glacier-related disaster in history,[2][3]: 16  and the third or fourth most deadly landslide-related disaster of the 20th century, after the Haiyuan landslides (China), the Armero tragedy (Colombia) and by some estimates the Khait landslide (Tajikistan).[4]
The north peak of Huascarán from which the avalanche originated had been considered unstable since 1962, when a smaller collapse wiped out several villages of the Callejón de Huaylas valley near Yungay. However, the provincial government made efforts to prevent the news from spreading and urged people not to panic. The 1970 earthquake destabilized a glacier and snowmass which surged rapidly downhill, becoming a mudflow as it accumulated large volumes of loose dirt, rock and surface water. The death toll was made worse due to the earthquake having occurred on a Sunday, as thousands more people had congregated in Yungay for market when the mudflow struck and leveled the city. The slide then entered the Río Santa and caused extensive damage as it flowed all the way downstream to the Pacific Ocean, a distance of 100 miles (160 km), mostly through a narrow canyon. death 30,000 missing Unknown

If you pay attention to the video, the first half is world war 1 and the second half transitions to the Second World War 😢

Awesome reaction! If you wanna hear another great swedish band then you should checkout HammerFall "Brotherhood" or "(We Make) Sweden Rock" they formed 1993 and have been active since that, Their music is very good and catchy, and the band is very successful

The Red Baron, there in the sky.
You only hear about fallen heros of the Allies. Never any from Germany,..but for one. The Red Baron and even then he is mostly made fun of. He died just before his 25th birthday. They tore his uniform from him for souvineers and the same with his plane. Today he is a f unny character that is shot down by Snoopy. Sad,isnt it. He was the greatest flying ace of WWI. Also,he didnt shoot the pilots of the planes he shot down, allowing them to live.
