My First Day With the 2021 BMW RnineT

- I collect a three week old BMW RnineT press motorbike from BMW Motorrad’s UK headquarter in Farnborough, Hampshire.
After giving back the Triumph Bonneville T120 a week ago, I’m keen to find out how thees two big capacity modern classic motorcycles compare.
I ride through Hampshire and into the Surrey Hills, where I stop off at Ryka’s biker cafe at the bottom of Box Hill and discuss the R9T with some fellow bikers.

Thank you so much Tito!!🙂🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

I have a 2019 R9T and absolutely love it more and more every time I ride it. It just seems to get better with time and nice to ride a simple bike that brings back the joy of riding when a bike was a bike without all the bells and whistles. You actually feel like you are engaged with the bike.
So true- it feels like a future classic already! The handling, suspension and brakes (and engine!) are a dream!
How is the maintenance
@@FreddieDobbsactually the suspension is awful on my 2016 model updated to Wilber’s rear
After years without a motorcycle I have now fallen hopelessly in love with the R NineT....I'm afraid I'll be purchasing it soon. Top video by the way!
Great Vid, Freddie. Best wishes from Germany. Today I got my brand new RnineT 2023 in black. I am so happy... Let the Customizing beginn...
People stairing at you as you arrive on that R ninety, that's a cool sight. They wouldn't do it if you had arrived even in a 50k pounds car. That's the beauty of riding a cool motorcycle.
I absolutely love the Rninet, I keep buying and selling them and am on my 5th one now … it’s so stylish and simple and just gives you the purest of riding experiences
What’s the reason behind you buying and selling your rninet if may ask?
I own a 2022, BMW RnineT scrambler. Bought it new from the dealership and haven't regretted it for a second. I'm a daily rider so I did have to upgrade the seat to a more comfortable one, but after doing that I have no qualms with spending all day on it. They are really amazing bikes.
'O', it is a dream machine. I have owned my RnineT heritage bike for two years now and I simply luv it. It just has so much character and charm I couldn't live without it.😎
Just bought a 2014 RnineT and I am thoroughly stoked! I also have a Triumph 2018 Speedmaster, so between the two, I am set for a while, with the Triumph for more long, comfortable rides and the Beemer for the snappy twisties. Nice video, BTW. Your enthusiasm is infectious!
One of the best Evaluation Videos about the R19teen that I have seen so far. Fun to watch.
Thank you so much!
Hallo Freddie, I have to say that among the broad spectrum of BMW’s you chose one of the best, I myself had it for over two years and I can’t say more than what you expressed, but after decades of Beemers I decide to return to an old love, a British bike, a Thruxton RS and from then on I didn’t stop smiling!
You know that each bike has it own personality which in certain way reflects your own. and so we find again
ourselves with the Triumph Thruxton.
As always I follow you in UTube and I appreciate your comments!
All my Best from Italy
The gentleman said to you “The T-120 is an old man, Spike…the RnineT is nothing like it” …I love my Triumphs for sure, but I must agree with his assessment ! The adjustable suspension, steering dampener, the tires and tread pattern, are just the beginning of the differences. Also, Love that jacket 👍 and If I could add an RnineT to my ownership, I believe I’d park it in the living room and take the grief from the wife about that. 😎 thanks Freddie, hats off to Monica for great video directing and editing, I detect her hand in that ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Re-watching this now as it's too cold outside to ride and I miss it so much. Great review for a great bike (mine!)
I moved from a T120 to an R9T and particularly noted that the R9T is much more nimble on the corners. The T120 needed a good push on the bars to get round. My opinion is the BMW was just generally smoother and more flowing in its handling. The more forward riding position on the R9T helps give it a more urgent feel too. Not that I disliked the T120, it is just a little more laid back.
Absolutely perfectly described! I completely agree with you on every single point👌👌
Ive starting watching your channel in earnest a few weeks ago when one of your Tenerife videos caught my attention and I became hooked on your passionate narrative style. Now I’m going back to your previous episodes, thus my late comment on this one.
I think of the BMW RnineT as a retro inspired naked sports bike with retro cues such as a single round headlight, smooth curvaceous tank, cooling fins, and simple shaped seat. Whereas the Triumph Bonneville Modern Classics are truer to the retro theme.
I did wonder why, after you discovered the RnineT’s sporty character, you continued to discuss the RnineT as a competitor with the T120 when the Thruxton is the naked sports bike in the Bonneville line. I think most articles matched up the RnineT with the Thruxton as well.
But as always very entertaining. As an American with very limited experience of the Europe outside of the touristy bits, I love watching your adventures through the eyes of a moto enthusiast. Just the way I’d hope to experience them someday. Also love the gear reviews and frequent cafes you visit. Can we have more Monica? My wife endures my own moto passion, and seeing Monica share your adventures is inspiring for us.
Hi Freddie, loving your videos. I only found them less than a week ago, I think I've got 2 of your videos left to watch! 😆 Great content, love the bikes, the soundtracks, the cafes, the lifestyle content, everything really! Keep going with it, I can see big things happening for you. Good luck 🙏
Thanks Ross!🙂
Very nice review. I have a 2021 R nine T with option 719. I just switched from Ducati Scrambler 803 cc to Nine T. Great bike.
I had to press subscribe to listen to Freddie, incredibly nice video , very clear explanation specially for people wants to buy their first motorcycles, got my R nine T classic. :)
I'm so glad you did this review and emphasised the differences between the BMW and the Triumphs. I owned an R Nine T from new in 2015 and kept the bike until 2018 and had an absolute hoot on it. I couldn't believe how the motorcycle journalists were comparing it to the likes of the Thruxton and Bonnie at the time as it was so much more modern and capable and not just an all rounder but (as you pointed out) a bit of fucused weapon when you wanted it to be. Looks wise, I absolutely loved it. The little seat hump was extra but did a good job of keeping my bottom from slipping backwards under hard acceleration. One of the best handling bikes I have ever had the pleasure to ride and I have ridden many sports bikes. The only two things I didn't like were the ABS which I found to be too sensitive and the fact that I had to pay for the first service which was at 600 miles so quite an expense if you've just had to fork out (12k then) for the bike. I don't really think anyone that hasn't ridden the bike would have an understanding of how good it is. I also think that BMW is a brand that divides opinion in the same way that say Harley does, maybe for that reason the bike is misunderstood as far as its capabilities are concerned. Then there's the retro classic thing which might put some people off. However, everyone should have a test ride on one, if for no other reason but to surprise yourself...😉👍
Very well said and really good to get your insight as an owner! Can I ask what you traded it in for?🙂
@@FreddieDobbs hi Freddie I didn't trade it in just sold it as I had other bikes that I had owned for a while. One which has sentimental value and I cant sell it and I wanted to buy a Norton Commando which I eventually did. I would consider buying another R Nine T though. 👍
I had three Nortons in the 70s and six months ago I got my third BMW which is a 2021 r9 t and it’s a good looking bike everything very good !
Very good review but also cool riding jacket. Can’t wait for more content.
Appreciate it Carlos! The jacket's from Garibaldi and it's called the "Heritage". It's very very good!🙂
I have an Rninet and honestly, most people complain about the suspension who own it, but I've never seen any huge deficiencies with it.
I do agree what you said about the T120-Rninet-Speed Triple comparison though, having never owned a triumph, i remember riding a bunch of them and feeling like they were beautiful too look at, but with sluggish handling/performance.
I came from a classic aircooled Ducati Monster... that bike was mostly a pleasure to work on, ride and experience... and the RnineT feels like the spiritual successor to it.
its easier to maintain than a aircooled desmo, more powerful than any other aircooled engine and handles amazing as long as you dont go too crazy... my only complaint is the seat, while i could ride them monster 1000km's no problem, the seat on the Rninet is absolutely terrible, 1hr into riding it will leave me hurting... but that was an easy upgrade.
What did you upgrade to?
I am one of those cases, where for very obvious reasons, the swapp occurred . Some nights I still wake in the middle and I ask instantly if I still own the T120…just knowing that it is gone in the trading I did with the BMW R nine T scrambler. I never went on off-road trails with the beautiful T120. Never had the courage to submit that classy bike to those harsh conditions, despite its generous offer to face them. The BMW R Nine T makes you feel like a Teutonic Knight. Even the BMW GSA riders, respect your presence on the road or in the motorway. I can see the fear in their eyes 😂 The bike looks also attractive and it inspires that kind of reaction when every vehicle recognizes the R Nine T imposing character☝️💪
It looks like a nice bike, more a competitor for the speed twin than the t120. I'm considering a twin so will check out this BMW too. Great upload Freddie, living your channel 👍
Spot on the 1200 speed twin is the true comparison to the r9t no similarly to the 120
I road tested one on a main dealer organised ride out back in 2015 absolutely loved it brilliant bike
Brilliant Video!!! Like - 👍 I'm in agreement with your summary. The saying goes, 'Different Strokes for Different Folks', which applies to motorcycle preferences in general. Thanks to all the motorcycle manufacturers for giving us great motorcycle choices for us to select from and enjoy.
Really appreciate it, thank you!🙌. And well said- we're spoilt for choice with so many fantastic bikes!
Hello 👋
Yes l Love my R9T had for a few years now
And l am still as Excited as you Freddie
She likes The Hills , Twisties n slow Turns and Her Sound reminds me of an old war movie with Fighter Planes overhead Adelaide South Australia 🇦🇺
O.k. my friend..we understand it.. you are in love with this motorcycle.. l am going to test this model next month.. Greetings from Greece..
Really nice review of this incredible machine, Freddie! I've been watching your content on Instagram and I'm glad I found your channel here as well. Way to go! Ride safe, Cheers man!
Thanks so much and really glad you enjoyed the video!🙂🙌🏻🙌🏻
OMG in 1978, our first trip to England, we stopped at a little shack called Ryka Burger near London. It was horrible but next trip we will give them another try.
Totally love this bike! I have grey 2021 Pure with spoked wheels. It boggles my mind how you don’t have 1M subs yet. Your videos are well made and your fashion choice is on point. Maybe it’s time to colab with bigger dogs.
Lovely review of my favourite bike. Don't have one yet, still riding my old R850R, though. You are presenting the bike honestly and with the point of view of a person who is really riding all year round. And thank you, thank you, at last someone who speaks English without finishing every sentence as a question!
I am 23 and just learnt how to ride a motorcycle.. late in the game, I know.. will be buying a used bike probably or lower CC one as I need to look at finances and shit but 3 days back I was just exploring bikes and all and ran into this beast. Instantly it became my favourite bike. You asked whether we see it as naked or classic.. for me, I see it as my dream bike. I'll definitely buy this one someday. Also, amazing video man, got to know a lot more about my dream bike! Subscribed! Cheers!
Always reminded my more in the same category as Yamaha xsr900. I view them both as much more modern bikes with heritage stylings and aesthetics. Triumph is quite literally just a new version of the same classics made for decades. You really can't compare the 2, the RnineT is hands down a superior bike. I still love my xsr900, and will not be changing for some time. Although I love and appreciate all motorcycles with passion. The BMW blew my mind when released and now it is just even more incredible.
Literally had my ninja under a month and now I'm fancying a modern classic
I know the feeling!!😆 You will not regret getting a modern classic, and the fun factor/adrenaline doesn't decrease. The R9T especially- it's a seriously aggressive bike!
Nice , finally on a 9nineT , I'm sure you will love it , that's what I ride and I love it. Enjoy.
Thanks Archie, it's an incredible machine!
Good on you Freddie first Brith who said it truthfully about the difference between Triumph and BMW when it comes to these 2 bikes. I own a R9T roadster the first the original, the one which was in that video in the desert with Roland Sands and Ola. I would never sell it or buy another bike, it just full fills me so much every time I ride.
Thanks Marko, I'm quite blown away with the BMW- it's a very special machine. That's fantastic- to own the original feels like an absolute no-question future classic. It's just an incredible feeling of excitement every time you ride it🙂👌
Ryka's takes me back. The engines are great on these bikes. London to Portugal return nine times on an R1100GS, with one of those years taking in Greece. It stopped using oil on the way back from Athens in '98. It had done 30,000 miles by then.
Get yourself an electric vest.
Great video.
I've owned and ridden a number of bikes over my 42 year love affair with 2 wheels and a motor and have had fun on all of them. For quite a few reasons tho my 2018 Urban GS is my favorite. I've been on bikes with more power, but none as refined while still a thug at the end of the day. Solid and reliable with plenty of grunt in any gear. And outfitted with a sensible backbone more mature in its sensibility than most naked thrusters. She's not slow tho...that front tire will rise up in 3rd gear if you twist on the throttle right.
Superb review. Love BMW bikes and have owned K1100RS, K1200RS and R1150GS ADV. The GS was definitely my favourite. Surprisingly good road bike on Michelin anakee tyres.
I’m doing my “thorough” research for my next bike from my current beginner BMW G310R, it’s funny that you say somewhere at the beginning of this review that it was the r9t that really got you on the Retro Classic Wave, me too Bro ever since I saw this Gorgeous carefully thought out detailed machine, I knew this was going to have to be mine at some point to keep forever! It’s a blank canvas to customize however one desires! I however like the scrambler version better. I love naked hyper sports and retro classics, so the fact that it muscles on like a naked hyper sport and looks like a it was born out of pure heritage love, is enough to know this is what future Motorcyclists 100 years from now will consider a True Classic. Your reviews are humbling and authentic bro, saying hello from Sunny ☀️ Southern California! 🤙🏼
That's a brilliant next step from the G310R!
I totally agree- this will be a future classic and is the most incredible blank canvas.
Send some of that California sun my way please!!🙂🙌🏼🙌🏼
You should do a comparison of the G310R and r9t. I would be very interested
Decent bike, decent clothing, thumbs up video. 👌
Thanks Jan🙂
I have the scrambler r9t love it more and more over 2 years now but i test rode the FTR1200 now have a deposit on this bike.... love to see your review on the Indian FTR - I thought they would be similar as stats are comparable, however by the seat of my pants WOW the FTR is a ruckus lunatic looking for trouble where as the BMW scrambler is the quiet achiever a friend who's got your back.
That's really interesting as I know very very little about the FTR. Thanks for sharing this insight- I'll try and get an FTR on test!
I know I’m going back to old vids. . .but I came off a K1600 to my T120. . .not missing the power as the T120 has plenty. . .I understand the R9T would be much sportier and fun in deep corners. I guess I’m just getting old. . .I would NEVER pick the 9 over the T120. . .but I do love it.
Love it!! My favorite bike. Great review. I love how excited you got over the bike
I live in Australia, cruise control is important. Long distance riding needs that.
U shall make a big impression in times to come
Thanks very much Milton!🙂
Congratulations on 150k subs
Love the 9T but I'm 6.3, much too small for me. I don't know why they don't make it a bit bigger. Perfect size for women imho.
Test rode the sport ,what a beautiful bike in every respect ,I want one 😀🇬🇧🏍
They really are dream bikes. They're definitely premium (both price and quality), but so so special!😍
Well, I luv it, I already knew that, but what about some mini-tours with a pillion? Hmmmm?
Great vlog Freddie, thanks for sharing. I seem to be living my biker life vicariously through you. It was the R9T that first drew me back to biking. Throughout covid, I've become hooked on Triumph, especially the Speed Twin. But now hearing you on the R9T, I've gone full circle. I guess one of each? I should be so lucky! Looking forward to any follow-ups. Pete
Hi Pete,
Thanks very much, really glad you enjoyed the video!
The R9T's the kind of bike that can get people back into biking! It's also the kind of bike that takes sports bike riders over to modern classics.
The Speed Twin vs the R9t; that's a seriously close call! I haven't ridden the Speed Twin for long enough to give a good input, but that's a great face off! The BMW is an extremely impressive bike- I'm a bit worried how much I'm starting to like it!
One of each sounds like a dream garage to me!😆
Test road this bike last Friday, it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing...it’s got more than enough poke for the road in a very good looking package, you can cruise on it but when you’re on a fast ride with your mates you won’t be left behind. I loved it and I’ve ordered one ( it’s all your fault Freddie 😉 ) don’t start thinking this bike isn’t very capable, I’ll be jumping off a KTM 1290R for the BMW so I’ll be dropping some power but this is just a better looking, better made, better all round bike and best bit of all it’s a bike you’ll always turn to look back at before you lock your garage door....Downsides? It’s BMW so it won’t be cheap to service but every now and then you ride a bike that’s just a bit special so I’ll torch the bank card now and worry about the rest later 🔥😎
Best attitude!😆
I fell in love with a R9T last year but it was £8.5k (bargain, but double my budget). I bought a Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 for about a third of the price which for me has some of the same great detailing but most of all is about focus and fun. I may still graduate to R9T but I’m having so much fun on the little 401 and it’s very cheap to run. If I had to do a lot more miles I would upgrade to the beemer. Great video, really enjoyed seeing Ryka’s (my old stomping ground as a 17 year old on my tuned Honda MBX125) and enjoyed you sharing the experience. Keep em coming!
That's brilliant- Ryka's as a 17 year old on a MBX125!😀🤘
I strongly agree with you- these smaller bikes are often more fun than the bigger bikes and I can imagine how fun the 401 is!! I still love my slow (relatively speaking) 865 Bonneville too much to sell it. Thank you for the support Tim!🙂
Great vlog as always Freddy. The BMW is a great machine but a tad too rich for me however I was intrigued by the chains you use to secure your motorcycles😃😃.didn’t realize bike theft was a huge deal in the UK.
When NineT appeared it was a instant hit... for the man with money. Today It is ridiculously more expensive here (Portugal) than a T120, passing even the Thruxton RS space. Having said that, I would never have compared this to the t120, and would probably compare it, equipment wise and "way of use wise" to a Thruxton R.
I love it, and is on my bucket list but would have to win the lotto to get me one (at least new, but they sure hold their value tight). Between this, and the future speed Twin R (not real yet, but it will come), I would really have a hard time to decide. That will be a good comparison to be made. Even so, it is a air and oil cooled machine, a repurpose of the GS "1200" engine of old, and it doesn't have a fuel gauge... just a reserve indicator... I am ok with that, as my w650 just has the "fawcetIndicator System :D"... and the USB charger above the engine... WTF had that idea???
You didn't mention all the variants... Pitty the NineT Racer went away (discontinued, surely due to low sales volume, but for me it is still the best looking of the bunch, but very hard on your back...even worse than a RR), and the cheaper Ninet don't seem to hold up to this specific model... they feel to me like forced knock offs just to lower the price. And they are. it's like having a porsche 718... It's a porsche but it just says you didn't have the money to buy the 911.
About the visuals... There is a option 719 line of "visual changes" that always make me ask for the other 718 previous options as they are all creepingly ugly. Germans doing design and art, it does not work well since the days of bauhaus.
For me, between this and a thruxton R with racer kit... Man... I hope I never get to make this decision.
Great passeionate video...subscribed already!
Thanks for the support Joao, and you're completely right; the Speed Twin is the best comparison (I really need to try one!). The RnineT Racer was a real beauty, but it seems that consumers are just moving further and further away from anything sporty.
I agree- I wouldn't choose the 719- it's such a good looking bike with those classy, understated looks as it is
I got the pleasure to rent one in Florida. my first bike is a 20 year old harley sporster 1200 and had only been riding for about 10 months. compared to that, the RnineT is a Fire Breathing Monster when i asked it, and a purring, rumbling kitten when i didn't ask. having ridden only a, by motorcycle standards, a slow, low performance machine for about 10 months. the bmw felt like a well trained Dragon. it would calmly putt with you around town in complete contentedness. then wake up an breath fire and brimstone when you decide to slay an on ramp or a twisty road. I Loved every minute on the one i rented. If the RnineT was making say, 60-70hp instead of 105, I would literally recommend it as a beginner bike. its that well mannered.
Very good shout - around 70hp would make it a very good learner bike! I'm a huge Harley fan and agree with you completely, although I also (probably like you!) love the laid back vibes of the Harleys too👌👌
@@FreddieDobbs As the old adage says, "Get Both" A harley will always be in mylife, but when its time. it will be sitting next to one of these.
The video was sooo cool! :) I strongly enjoyed it :)
Thanks Raphael, really glad you enjoyed it!🙂🙌🏻🙌🏻
This bike is amazing. I rode the GS edition the other week.
I've just subscribed to your channel 👍
Thanks for the support! It's a reeeeeally great bike! The GS version looks very cool⚡️
Just a beautiful guy to Look at. Oh and the ninet is a dream bike for me 😁
Thank you Stephan!😂
Great review!! I’m considering this as my next bike. I love super nakeds, like the Speed Triple and new 1000R, but the look of this bike puts a big grin on my face! 🖤😎
Thanks Robert!🙂 It’s an incredibly special bike!🖤🏍
Thanks for a great look👌🏼, he didn't hide his enthusiasm.😉
It’s easy to get over enthusiastic with the R9T!😆😆
Brilliant video 👍 the r 9 t is simply a better bike in every way than the t 120 , however triumph have a brilliant marketing/ Sales team !
Keep up this good work ( sorry for the late reply getting to this video ) 👍👍
Thanks Paul!
Nice review freddie. Keep up the good work. In malaysia GS is the best seller n the rnine t can be considered as rare.
Great vid again. I love my RnineT. And it is just as you described it really! In a class of it's own .. for an individual ride. I also have a Triumph Thunderbird Sport and Honda Africa Twin as well. And used to have a Bonney similar to yours which I loved and miss a bit. Such different style bikes that serve different purposes.
Thanks Allan!
Wow, you have an absolute dream garage! The Africa Twin looks incredible- I've never ridden one, but I just absolutely love them!
Brilliant video Freddie, the production quality is just perfect too. I have the Street Twin and was so surprised by the R-Nine T on my test ride. That classic feeling matched with the modern style is alot more interactive and vibrant on the BMW, Triumph did a great job with their water cooled range but theres something lacking for me that the R-nine-t pointed out. I think its that solid, weighty feeling. I'm now your 487 subscriber, I hope to see more from you & we could do a channel co-lab if you fancy. I'm in St Albans & I think we have the same style, catch you soon
Thanks so much, hugely appreciate it! The Street Twin's one of my favourite bikes ever- soooo fun!! But I know what you mean in comparing it to the RnineT- the R9T feels more planted and solid. Thanks for the support and I'll definitely stay in touch because I lived in St Albans for 21 years!🙂
@@FreddieDobbs Cheers i'm not sure what I would have if I could afford the R-Nine T from the start. But with my needs from the bike now changed i'm keen to test out some other options. The V85 TT looks good but not sure I am ready for the big adv style yet.. Brilliant i'm sure you enjoyed the place. Do you have insta?
@@AnotherHipster The V85 TT is so unique- it's a beautiful bike🖤. I do; my Insta is @dob.bs
Another lovely vid. ❤️
Would love to see your take on the new Norton Commando
Hi Freddie I agree it looks a very nice bike however your bringing back so many memories for me of box hill - Sunday rides gone all day brilliant , and I’ve subscribed now . Would I buy that bmw I have to say no I’d rather get a triumph bobber or a scrambler , great channel keep it up and ride safe .
Hi Freddie, the nice handling has nothing to do with the steering damper old boy, that’s down to the geometry, suspension and tyres, the steering damper is only there to stop it shaking it’s head if it gets out of shape for whatever reason, (hard acceleration, road surface, extreme cornering).
This is weird, I come from just down the road from you, I regularly visit the Isle of Wight and I used to own an R nine T. Warning! The saddle is incredibly uncomfortable and the bike becomes a money pit VERY, VERY QUICKLY. BMWs are not built like they used to be, and I cannot recommend buying one.
That is extremely interesting! Thank you so much for sharing this owner insight Sven!
This does not surprise me. I had a 1995 R1100GS for 17 years and 91,000 miles. A surprising amount of things went wrong, and often early on in the bike's life. The main thing: the gearbox failed. And BMWs were more better then. I think the main problem is the longevity of the parts, not reliability.
Interesting, alot of people say similar things about KTM,though when you read reviews you get a mixed bag of riders who have owned there bikes for a long period with not a single issue I wonder if it's the same with BMW
@@1990-t1jpoor longevity causes unreliability!
good review buddy and subscribed ......i keep looking at the r9t as it looks cool, ride an s1000r at moment, ill have to take a test ride .
The cylinders heads are crash bars 🙂👍
Too bad they make them expensive these days. They used to be cheap protection.
Nice review Freddie, I did consider One of these when deciding on my net bike, but I went for the T120 Black in the end, I just felt the BMW was so small under me in the showroom, this was obvious when you climbed on it too, you make it look like a toy! but I ended up selling the T120 for similar reasons in the end. These bikes are great for 5.8 feet people and under, but anything over 6.0 foot and the bikes feel too small. Plus the host of available extras for the T120 was far greater than the BMW.
Thanks very much!🙂
And thank you for the very interesting insight! What did you swap the T120 for??
I have a R1200R that I bought new in 2009 and Love the bike but find its height is becoming a bit of a problem as I age, I am 73 +. The R9t has the same wonderful engine, and is lower and lighter, so it is tempting. I am so used to being able to put my full face helmet in either one of the hard bags I hesitate to give that up! I also have a 2016 Sportster ROADSTER that i really enjoy!
I can imagine that loosing the luxury of putting a helmet in a pannier would be hard to give up (I had no idea that was possible on any bikes- you've opened my eyes!).
It's an interesting point you make and it's all relative because I usually prefer the small bikes such as the Triumph Street Twins and my Bonneville, and compared to those, the R9T is big, and very scary with all of its power!
But an absolutely superb bike, the R9t is!
Nice review again. I have a 2000 Triumph Thunderbird Sport, old school, no electronics and even has carbs. Lovely bike and can get a move on but I am considering an R9T as it is more basic than most modern bikes in terms of things to wrong but better than the Triumph in terms of day to day use(week to week really). Now they have been around a while they are pretty good value too. 👍🏻
Thanks Lee! The R9Ts are pretty good value- I've seen a few very tempting ones on BikeTrader!🙂
Amazing video, am considering getting one, but I am weighing it up against the Speet Twin,
Cheers,
I would have thought the Triumph Speed Twin would be more of a direct competitor than the T120 to the R Nine T.
Edit: Or maybe even the Thruxton.
I’m a new subscriber. I will be buying a new bike after COVID restrictions are lifted here in New South Wales and I am looking at either an R Nine T, Thruxton or Speed twin. I noticed you compared this to the T120. Would be great if Triumph could let you use a Thruxton as I think that is more of a competitor.
Great review. I love the naked look, the Boxer engine and the simplicity but stylish looks of the R NineT. Torn between this and the R1250RS, but I’m honestly not ready to move on to a ‘sport tourer’ just yet.
Thanks Dennis! I know exactly what you mean- the R1250RS will be a superb bike, but the R9T looks so unbelievably good!😍
@@FreddieDobbs Exactly. The R NineT is not vanilla.
I'm saving for a triumph speed twin, I imagine that's the closest comparison to the triumph line. Would love to see you review the speed twin 🙌
I completely agree- the Speed Twin vs the R9T is the most relevant match up. I’ll try and test out a Speed Twin!🙂👌🏻🏍
@@FreddieDobbs Can't wait to see it, keep up the content 👏🙏
I have an R9T but got to ride a Speed Twin as a loaner for two weeks while one of my other bikes was in the shop. Loved the Speed Twin but it does not come close to the quality build of the R9T particularly the brakes.
@@martinlegrice1414 very very interesting! Thanks for the insight- quite a few people seem to agree with you on this point about the R9T having superior build quality!
Excellent channel Freddie ~ could you review your security set-up? I'm fascinated by the chains/locks and anchors you're using .. keep it up mate ~ sending best from Seattle
Good shout- I will do!🙂👌🏻👌🏻
Hey Freddy! Your passion and dedication to motorcycling is just inspiring! Have you thought to make a video with a Thruxton? I guess that would be amazing ..
How tall are you by the way? Because I’m now thinking about changing my T120 with an R nine T
Tried a triumph speed twin and R9T scrambler had the other half on the back she like's R9T saying nicer ride .............
I pick up R9T scrambler on Wednesday ...... lol
Very interesting, thanks for the insight Chris as I I've never ridden the Speed Twin, so interesting to get your thoughts on it! Oh WOW- there'll be some sleepless nights until Wednesday I can imagine. Enjoy!!🙂
Nice initially review. I ordered one a few weeks ago in 719 aluminium with the shadow billet packs and the comfort pack plus the upgraded spoked wheels. It arrives end of may. Look forward to seeing a more in-depth review from you once you can. P.S. triumph speed twin is definitely a better comparison 😊
Hi Derek,
The option pack you've chosen is pretty much exactly how I spec'd an R9T on Monday (just to see the cost of one with my dream option pack). I bet you can't wait- that'll be an unbelievably special bike! You're absolutely right re the Speed Twin as a more relevant comparison- that's the real comparison!
Yeah looking forward to getting the bike. Once i have it, I’ll do a vlog on the billet packs so that everyone knows exactly what you get in the packs. Hope you get your hands on a speed twin as would be really interested in the comparison.
@@derekturner744 That'd be a great video to see the billet pack!
Maaate! Lovely bike, good vid. BUT - please stop saying dampener, it does not moisten the steering, it suppresses excessive movement fed back therefore it is a damper. Love that bike, want it!
Hi , nice BMW . If the build quality is as good as the old ones , it will last a life time . Are they ohlins forks on it ? and a cruiser with grunt and torque , how is the pillion seat up to the triumph ? and will Monika be happy . Take care and ride that one as if you stole it .
I think they are online forks. The pillion comfort is much worse than the Triumphs, so Monika didn't find the R9T comfortable... but it is way faster than the Bonnevilles
Lovely looking bike, look forward to the next video
Thanks Peter!
I see the R Nine T as a good looking roadster with high quality suspensions, not the same type as the T120 that is a comfortable cruiser with an upright position. BMW in France is pretty clear about the incomfort for the passenger, it's a solo bike. I still tried with my fiancée to on sit on it and even though she is slim, the seat is just too short for a trip longer than 15min. The R1250 R looks less good, but is probably the best option for riding a roadster 2-up at BMW
Thanks Vilmir- that's a really interesting insight about how the French BMW market it. I completely agree- it's a solo bike that can be used for very short periods with a pillion. My partner, Monika, was not happy at all to be sat on the back of the R9T either! So true; the R1250R doesn't have the beautiful looks, but would be significantly comfier!
another video with great review of the Bmer ... but again you're comparing it to the wrong bike .... weird !!!! the Bonnie T120 ... and I have one is a great bike ... I love it (I also have an 9RT) but NOT to be compared to the 9RT .... use a modern classic thruxton or a modern classic speed twin, that would be closer and definitly more fair .... cheers mate 🙂
I own a RnineT “scrambler” . I bought it on looks alone. You wouldn’t want to green lane on it. Well I wouldn’t. I wanted a completely opposite ride to my T100. It certainly is that. Loads of torque and plenty of go. I like it but I’m not sure I love it. I test rode a Triumph xe scrambler which was a lot of fun and arguably a better bike.
That's very interesting hearing your thoughts as an R9T Scrambler owner, thanks Jamie🙂
@@FreddieDobbs A pleasure Fredster. Keep up the good work. I’m enjoying your vlogs. Come over to my manor sometime, West Essex. I’ll buy you coffee at famous Epping Forest High Beach Tea hut. Lots of bikes to see this time of year. The coffee isn’t to bad either for a Tea hut ie it’s not instant coffee 😉
Say what you want but it`s refreshing in this day and age to see someone really exited about a bike they own. If a bike makes you feel like this, other stuff doesn`t matter. Btw, Triumph Speed Twin wants to have a word with you.
BMW r9t starting from £13,150, Triumph Bonneville T120 £10,800, the original British icon. I'm still waving the flag for Triumph, however I am 63 years old and a relaxed ride suits me fine!! Thanks for the review.
The T120’s also the bike that suits me best- I prefer the more relaxed riding position and 80hp on the T120’s more than enough for me. And a good point you make re the cost!
Placing my order for a T120 very very soon!!
@@markb3180 So exciting!! Keep me posted with how you get on!
@@FreddieDobbs Waiting for the showrooms to get back to normal, then I'll be out for a test ride!
@@FreddieDobbs the Pure is a fairer comparison against the T120 at £11,395 but these bikes are more about heart than head. I had a T140V a long time ago but I’m a big fan of Boxer motors, so I picked a Racer over the more expensive Thruxton. But each to their own. Nice video 🇬🇧🏍
i got one and i love it!!!!
its cult already
Hey Freddie, I think I’m almost as excited as you about this! (I have the R9T scram). You look super enthusiastic in this video, the bike is obviously making the right impression.
I may be wrong but I believe the pure has a smaller front wheel than the scram / urban GS?
Hopefully BMW will also loan you one of the other models so you can see the difference...
Great video, look forwarding to hearing its top of your list once the week is out 😂👍🏻
Hi Leigh,
It’s a very easy bike to get over-excited about- it’s such an impressive bike (both looks-wise and performance!)😃🤘🏼🏍
Ah that’s interesting- I thought it was the same wheel size but you may well be right, as I know Scrambler wheels are often slightly larger.
Thanks Leigh- I have one week to try and decide! The R9T’s so powerful and the handling and suspension is perfect!👌🏻👌🏻
The R9T has a 17 inch front wheel confirmed.
My dream bike for ages!!! 😩😩
I think the R9T is a bit more neo retro or neo café than classic. Kinda like the CB1000R
It would be really useful if you could discuss the rider ergonomics on the bikes you test Freddie...Perhaps if you gave your stats it would give us the viewers a better idea of the ergo/comfort factors 👍😉....fab video mate...keep them coming
Great tip, thanks very much! I'll start doing that! Thanks very much for the support🙂
@@breezytele Thanks very much! Funnily enough my latest video will perfectly answer your question as I'm 6'1 too. It's very comfortable and spacious too👌🏼🙂
Freddie - I am new to your channel and love your reviews. Would you own this bike yourself?
2012 BMW Twin cam R1200gs same motor gives a little more power [115hp] not much ,but it has more suspension travel and the anti dive telelever suspension with more long distance comfort for 2 with sweet handling . Still i think better than the water cooled boxer twin variants .
Interesting, thanks for the insight Martin- the GS sounds like the absolute ultimate long distance bike.
Really well made and informative video, thank you for what must have been a huge effort. That motor in the R9T alone, and the heritage behind it, already makes it a classic. I like the small improvements, though I'm more of a GS lover due to the distance touring touring over varied surfaces I do, and the R9T does not have the wind protection and comfortable seating position that fits my requirements. That said, how I wish it did while retaining it's looks since my experience on one confirmed that it makes you feel special. It has a surprising kick in the behind when you twist the throttle, but in a controllable way that makes it very enjoyable. I rode the scrambler fitted with Metzeler Karoo street tires, and it performed admirably on well maintained dirt rides to my favorite hideaway spots. I've been mentioning ever since in my comments on the bike that I wish they'd made a few tweaks to a version to make the riding position more upright, with more leg room, slightly longer travel suspension, and incorporate a small but effective wind deflector system for longer touring (they did make incorporate the latter on the Urban GS version, thank you, but alas not the former to any noticeable extent). These are not cheap bikes, and where you are able to make the adjustments yourself (frame, drivetrain, motor based on a GS), so much more efficient when you can start with a better configured base. Despite all I've said and the constraints, I'm still tempted to add one to my collection for shorter rides. Enjoy your time on it, you will miss it once it's gone.
Thanks Gerhard, really appreciate it!🙂
I completely agree- the R9T already has the feeling of a classic bike and it makes the rider feel unbelievably special. It's been growing on me every day and I absolutely love it! Interesting points you make- especially regarding a slightly more upright riding position (I feel the same).
🙂
