I went from the r1250gs exclusive to the 2021 r9t pure. The GS is brilliant but I felt it increasingly too big, too tall, and too heavy. I rarely tour and don't go off road. The price difference is in the multiple thousands. The rninet pure is stripped back and so came onto my radar when BMW added cruise control to the 2021 model. More than powerful and torquey enough and a whole lot lighter lump to move around. Things I miss - quickshifter and a bit of wind protection but I use it as a day/weekend bike now and so no real issue. I don't really miss all the other toys the 125ogs exclusive comes with. The rninet pure is easy to customise so I am going to have a little fun doing that. I won't be adding 3 metal panniers and the kitchen sink that is for sure.....A nice BMW tank bag for days out and you are all good to go. Good video - thanks for posting.
That does sound a lot like you've made the kind of move that I was suggesting someone might make in the video... that god I wasn't just talking rubbish! You also sound very happy with your decision and the bike is fitting in with your life... spot on 👍
I made exactly the same switch as yourself, although my GS was written off in a non fault accident. I agree with everything you have said, but I actually find I get no buffet on my crash helmet like I did on the GS. I could never find a position on the screen that was buffet free. Incidentally, I can ride at 70mph visor up on my R9T and only got to 50mph on my GS. I would like a quickshifter if it were available, but other than that it’s a great bike to commute on and have some fun on the B roads. I’m not sure about touring though. I did a big tour to Germany and back on my GS and it was perfect. I am riding over to the NW200 next year and I don’t think the R9T will be anywhere near as comfortable, but then that’s not what it’s designed for. The only mods I’ve made are an evotech tail tidy, unit garage exhaust, bar risers and Wunderlich spot lamps so I’m a bit more visible. Otherwise it’s perfect.
I have the 2017 R9T Pure which I have kitted up as a cafe racer. I found the engine performance at lower rpm improved greatly with a plug and play Power Commander. I love the bike on the twisties; very flickable and a lot of fun. Not the fastest, not the quickest, but plenty of character with a high cool factor.
Hello there, I'd just like to thank you for the sub and for your comment... That's just what I needed to see when I woke up at 6.30 on a Sunday morning to do some more filming!
The R1250R is a great proposition for the road, except for two major flaws: the weight (239kg is ridiculous) and the orthopedic looks (hard for anyone under 50yo to click with the styling, really). The R Nine T is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, it's a bit on the expensive side, but the styling is absolutely spot on and it's the only classic (read non-Manga) looking bike with a powerful engine, a drive shaft, cruise control and IMU-assisted lean sensitive TC and cornering ABS. Plus it's almost infinitely customizable. Between the two it's hard to justify going for the R1250R.
You make good points and neither bike is perfect but clearly everybody has their own opinion and now that my R1250R is working properly again I would choose it over the R nineT. It has more torque, better instruments with app connectivity, a better front brake and more stable/comfortable handling that lets you concentrate better on the road and still go just as fast if you want tio... The R nineT has the looks but it all comes down to what you are looking for in a bike and I think the 1250 is the better machine. Then again I am nearly 50 years old 🤣
I had the R9T urban GS, traded it in for my R1250R. Really liked both bikes but the R1250R is much better in terms of equipment, pillion provision and power delivery. I would say though I think the R9T range looks better and the older engine does have more character (although both of those things are a matter of opinion / taste) 😊
Yes George pretty much agree with all your points! It turns out that my 1250 hasn't been running properly (ever since I fitted an after market exhaust) and that's why I thought the nineT compared so well to my bike in the engine department. Now my 1250 is running properly again I can feel that it has the stronger engine and it's just an excellent all round bike!
Nice comparison Rikky. Seems like a few people here (me included) considered the R9T before buying the R1250R instead. For me the R1250R is better over distance but I’m sure the R9T would be a great bike in an urban environment or for shorter journeys……
Thanks Spiko Yeah the R nineT is almost the perfect embodiment of a cafe racer... big fun over short distances! I'd have one in my dream garage for sure! But the 1250 makes more sense and is a great bike in it's own way 👍
I went from a 2018 RNineT Urban GS to a 2019 R1250GS, and back again. The 1250 is a space ship. The Range Rover of bikes. I just preferred the 9T motor and the simplicity. Spent the difference on another bike too.
I was going to buy the RNineT but after back too back test rides on both the aforementioned and R1250R I changed my mind and bought the R1250R. I thought it more comfortable quicker and better value for the money l was prepared to pay.
It does seem like the R1250 is coming out on top based on feedback to this video... I never really considered the R NineT because of my pre-conceived ideas about the engine. Had I tested it, it would have made me think twice but I'd say that I still would have gone for the 1250.
As an ex oil/air cooled BMW R1100S owner I just love them! The sound the feel the simplicity!! My R1100S was 229kg(non abs version) with about 100bhp and 100NM nice and low down with a six speed box I was able to keep up with anything up to 100mph yep it was out of puff above 130mhp but so what ot was super fun to ride!! The only thing that was annoying was the old split bmw indicators (left on the left hendelbar right on the right hendelbar as well as cancelling button!!)
I was talking to a chap at the track day today who used to have an R1100S funnily enough, he was very fond of it too! I'm glad that BMW has standardized on the switches now - ain't nobody got time for unique switchgear!
@@RikkyTang Yep R1100S was BMW best kept secret lol people never knew what a grate all round motorcycle it was I did Europe trips on mine and did track days as well! I know that the R1200S is even better at the sporty stuff but they are a bit to expensive and I don't think they will go down in price any time soon sadly plus my absolute pin up bike is the HP2 Sport that BMW took to race in Le Mans 24 hours. But who has spere 20K plus pounds laying around lol. But I really like the R1250R that You got I think it looks very nice and with the new TFT dash BMW fix the biggest problem I had with the liquid cooled R1200R which was analog speedo and digital rev counter!!
People often fuss about the suspension on this bike but I took mine to a speed shop shortly after purchase and had it properly set up (cost like $50) and it rides like an absolute dream...or at least far beyond my capabilities.
Yes that is the advantage of having fully adjustable suspension... I couldn't have a quick suspension tune-up done on my R1250R because you can't even manually adjust the preload!
Great timing! I was at a dealer today testing a new S1000RR and saw an R9t there on sale :) It renewed my interest in these - almost purchased one when they first came out. Great fun and great looking too.
I wish I'd been able to play with the suspension a bit because I'm sure I would have liked the bike even more if I could have softened it up a little. Still, it was a great bike and an eye-opening ride that's for sure!
@@RikkyTang When I test rode this bike when it first came out I loved it. It was super fun and agile, looked and sounded great. Wasn't as practical as I was thinking given I only wanted one bike at the time so in the end purchased an S1000R a bit later (traded in my street triple). I might have to get one now since the itch for a new bike is back. Oh .. if you want a stiff riding bike try out the new S1000RR. That puppy is stiff-fast but stiff.
I looked at the 9T at the same time as the 1250R. They are both great naked bikes but I bought the R because it is has more adaptability than the 9T; I like to load up for a camping trip and sometimes take a passenger.
I own a r nine t, I was in the market for a winter bike so looked at gs and tiger. So saw r nine t and bought one, no regrets. I'm old, but just could no go for gs1200. I've had a test ride on r1250r, it is a nicer ride and smoother. I loved it, but put it this way, I've put 3k in options and customizing into r nine t and only half way there if you like making it your own and individual, r1250 r other than a screen and engine bars nothing, 90% of bikes are toys and it's a beautiful toy that I ❤ the look of. . I just love how it looks and how it rides. It's like 90% old motorbikes a toy.
Thats a very good point you make with regards to customisation... I was maybe too subjective, seeing as I don't customise my bikes too much as a rule. These nine T's certainly look the part and that helps give a sense of character too especially if you enjoy riding it as well!
Hi Rikky, I love this video and also your r1250r videos. If you hadn’t already purchased your r1250r and if you had to buy one from the showroom, which would you choose amongst the two. ( rninet or r1250r) ..?
Thanks Darren! I would still go for the R1250... I like the engine more and the more configurable rider aids. Arguably the rninet handles better on the back roads and looks better!
Once again a really enjoyable video Ricky. I wonder what the bike would be like if they replaced the 1170 cc engine with the new 1250 shift cam engine?
It's funny you should ask Malcolm... If you asked me this yestedray I would have said something about the added weight of the bigger engine and watercooling probably meant that it wasn't really worth it for the marginal performance gain that I feel with the 1250 engine... however, tonight I had made a huge discovery (which I'll be making a video about very shortly). I've found that my Leo Vince exhaust had put my 1250 into some sort of reduced power mode - maybe ever since I fitted the thing! I put the OEM chrome exhaust back on tonight because I had a suspicion after the track day that the bike wasn't running at full power and I was right!! It feels like I've just (re)added 20hp to the bike!! So now the 1250 engine feels like it would be a good addition to the R9T 😊
Thanks for great informative video. I’m actually considering R1250RT vs R1250R + screen. I’m 5’11” and found the R1250RT a little cramped in terms of knee room but liked the riding position (I’ve had back problems with cruisers). I’d be grateful for your comments please in response and will now search out your other R1250R videos!
Hi Dan, thanks for your comment and message 😊 I think if you find the RT a little cramped you will more space on the R as there is no faring in the way and a different fuel tank design. As long as you don't mind cleaning the bugs off your jacket more often with a naked bike! You may want to consider the Sports Seat option too which will sit you a bit higher and give you more leg room because even the standard 820mm seat I can flat foot very easily with a 32" inside leg. If you are in no rush I'm planning a 10,000 mile review of my bike in a few weeks 😀
Torn between this and the speed twin 1200. Would love it if you could do a review on the triumph. I recently took a 2022 r9t out for the weekend and honestly I enjoyed the f900r more. But I’m really keen on getting a retro looking bike.
I don't work with Triumph yet unfortunately but the Speed Twin is high on my want to ride list! A Kawasaki Z900RS/Cafe are great looking bikes and perform well too if you don't mind an inline-4... I've got reviews of both on my channel 👍
I don't blame you about wanting to keep the 1250, it's a hard act to beat! I think I'm up to about 8k on mine. The looks of the 9T are pretty damn good though! I have heard a rumour that the 1250R and RS are due a refresh later this year (I think it's a smaller update compared to the all-new GS that's due...). I'll be keeping an eye out for that!
I bought my R1250R in September 2019. I was also considering an R9T but was intending to do a few longer rides. So I went with the 1250 even though I think the R9T is a much better looking bike and is sportier because it’s a bit smaller. Then Covid19 hit and I still haven’t been for a long ride. We’re currently permitted to ride up to 10 klm from home. Oh well…
Also considering the R1250R vs the R9T. Tested the R1250R and loved it, but definitely need a comfortable enough ride especially on bad roads like we have in Belgium. So I guess the R1250R is better for me then? Had a Z900RS before which I loved, kinda wondering if the R1250R definitely is a step-up compared to the Kawasaki. And is the R9T stiffer than the Z900RS? Never found the Z900RS to be uncomfortable.
I think if the roads are bad then the R1250 would probably be a better option.. however if you really do like sharp handling maybe the R nineT could be adjusted to deal with the poor roads and then tightened up when you want to take advantage of the great chassis (the one I rode was stiffer than the Z900 for sure with the default suspension settings). In a funny way I think the Z900RS and the R1250R are not too different even though the styling is obviously very different. If you want more electronic assistants and technology in your bike then the 1250 is a good step up. It's also got a lot more torque in the midrange. But on the whole I don't think it's a huge jump from a Z900RS... I'd love to own both if I had the chance, but since I can't I'm very happy to have the 1250 mostly due to the features I mentioned; technology and torque.
@@RikkyTang yep these would be the main things to push me towards BMW, like I said, I had the RS before (2019) and loved it, so might still decide to get a 2022 RS (or the SE...). Still, something about that BMW...
Yes that's a fair comment - I do keep seeming to forget about the RS! I should not have mentioned the GS at all to be honest because the main plan all along was to compare the two naked boxers from BMW. Sometimes when you are coming up with things to say off the top of your head, the wrong things come out even if they sound OK at the time! I have ridden an RS briefly too ua-cam.com/video/rnh5im4MF1E/v-deo.html
Yes that a tricky choice if you are a fan of the R nineT! WHen I decided to buy the 1250 one fo the reasons were the extra instrumentation and technology (i.e. phone connectivity) vs. the R nineT. But the nineT performs really well and looks better IMO
I really love the R9T but ended up getting my 2017 R1200R The ability to tour with the factory cases and also like the semi-active suspension and rides pro that the R9T does not have.
I'm still using the OEM silencer, I can't afford another one! I'll probably sell the Leo Vince and then if I get a Christmas bonus I may look around again 😊
I used to have a GS, but sold it a few years later as it was a bit tall and slow, (a 2007 model) and for years I've wanted another boxer engined bike and I homed in on the R1250R which I have test ridden and liked a lot, but still the looks fell a bit short for me and I love the R nine T looks. I do however want to do long trips on it as well as day to day stuff, and I'm guessing that tweaking the suspension plus a comfort seat and small screen should easily achieve that. Any comments about that anyone? Thanks for a great video! 😃
Thanks Gillian 😊Personally I can't comment on making an RnineT suspension comfortable enough for longer distance stuff but as an anecdote I did try to do the same thing to my S1000R but I couldn't manage it! It's part of the reason I went for the R1250. Hopefully someone will chime in though!
If you see the update in the video description you can see that it turns out that my R1250R had not been running properly before this comparison which unfortunately had affected the way I viewed this engine. Now that my 1250 is running properly again I can see how the R nineT still feels string but it is less powerful, more raw/less refined than my bike. I'm sorry that the performance side of this review isn't accurate anymore because of the problem I was having with my bike at the time of the review.
@@RikkyTang sorry none intended at all sir, I’m sure the r1250r is a more premium experience More adjustment, more hp, more torque and the luggage is far better so I’d imagine a nice touring machine all round I just think its appearance is bland and inelegant. I’m shallow like that That is why I’m still on a 1999 r1100s and not the 1250rs Gotta have that under seat exhaust. It’s so pretty
@@Heavywall70 no trouble im not offended just messing 😁 Yeah for sure the r1100s is a lovely looking machine. With the R1250r I think I have the best colour scheme but its not enough to save it haha

Thanks Darren! I would still go for the R1250... I like the engine more and the more configurable rider aids. Arguably the rninet handles better on the back roads and looks better!
I have 2014 R 9T and 2021 1250 GS. Here is the truth: planning to give my R 9 T to my grand son in the future and selling GS in 4 years
Actually that’s a cool point - the r9t may be a bike you pass onto the next generation just like a Swiss watch! 👍
Nice video ! How is the heat temperature around ankles on both bikes ?
@@RikkyTang That is good news Ricky. I actually got the R1250R with the need to also carry a pillion. You are brave going out on the track as well.
20K on my R1250R. Will not be trading in this bike! Have not ridden the 9T, but readily admit that they look better.
Oh well…
Your time will come! And when i does im sure you'll have a ball on the 1250.
@@RikkyTang I have my fingers, toes and every other appendage crossed.
You skipped the other BMW option for those not wanting the GS -- the R1250RS.
I’m cross shopping both right now.when I spec out the r9t the way I’d like the 1250 is better? I really like the the oil n air but…..
Yes that a tricky choice if you are a fan of the R nineT! WHen I decided to buy the 1250 one fo the reasons were the extra instrumentation and technology (i.e. phone connectivity) vs. the R nineT. But the nineT performs really well and looks better IMO
Great analysis, thank you so much!
You are very welcome!
Nice ride. I have the R850R. Thinking to get one.
Coming from the R850 I think you'll most likely love it 😊
Thanks
I really love the R9T but ended up getting my 2017 R1200R
The ability to tour with the factory cases and also like the semi-active suspension and rides pro that the R9T does not have.
Very good point regarding luggage and touring! 👍
same... luggage is huge
both are amazing, boxer engine.. shaft drive.. thats all i want
Did you manage to find an exhaust pipe that worked well on your 1250?
I'm still using the OEM silencer, I can't afford another one! I'll probably sell the Leo Vince and then if I get a Christmas bonus I may look around again 😊
my rninet drives me bonkers, the gearbox is loose in all gears which makes me think I am in 1st and I keep stalling it
You deserve more subs!
Good review; very timely for me thank you.
My pleasure I hope you find ot useful
@@RikkyTang Thanks Ricky. That's useful to know. 🤗
I REALLY love this bike (as you shall soon see🤩🏁
Well Well, another addition to you stable or a swap? Looking forward to finding out!
@@RikkyTang and now you know 😬
Very good review!
Nice video Ricky--
Thank you Anthis 😊
Whats the reserve range?
Reserve capacity is 3.5 litres... so I'd estimate maybe 30 - 40 miles
R1250 are a loot more grunty and faster✊🔥🔥
First like. :) I rode Rninet too.
I still prefer the R1250R.
gret sound track
Straight of the gate it has motor from 5 years ago. It should have a completely different engine character.
Mmm for me its an ok lookin bike but I prefer yours : ) cheers
The nineT does have something about it I think... it's a successful styling job, but yeah its the 1250 for me too 😊
Well , for starters the R9t isn’t ugly as sin
Even the shift cam motor of the r is
FUGLY !
None taken 🤣
@@RikkyTang sorry none intended at all sir, I’m sure the r1250r is a more premium experience
More adjustment, more hp, more torque and the luggage is far better so I’d imagine a nice touring machine all round
I just think its appearance is bland and inelegant.
I’m shallow like that
That is why I’m still on a 1999 r1100s and not the 1250rs
Gotta have that under seat exhaust. It’s so pretty
@@Heavywall70 no trouble im not offended just messing 😁 Yeah for sure the r1100s is a lovely looking machine. With the R1250r I think I have the best colour scheme but its not enough to save it haha
if only it had the tft screen
No no no no no
