EF Johnson Ranger Ham Radio Transmitter Hum in Audio Repair test Part 2

  • Challenge accepted! The modified relay switching has been removed, which eliminated the hum in audio from stray AC. Now the Ranger has 1 relay system for push to talk. Tested, monitoring on a National NC-300, all's well. This was a time consuming task, however more parts were pulled out than installed. I believe the Ranger is ready for service again. Remember Murphy's laws guys, If it's not broken, don't fix it. Here is the perfect example.

Nice job Terry, pulling this nice example from a certain trip to the dump.
Sounds like the person doing the mods was trying to reduce switch arcing by using relays and let the various switches live longer. The simple way to get switches to last is to NOT flip/turn them key down and clean them with a good contact cleaner every 3-5 years.
I agree with your assessment of Johnson Engineers. They really did a great job on most all of their products.

Just watched the video and thought, maybe that's why I got a hum on my Valiant. Been chasing it for a year and ran downstairs and put the case on it....yeah, it got worse bahaha. Funny thing is, if I run outboard audio to (I think) the 2nd audio stage, there's no hum. It's around the 1st stage (12ax7 i think) and i changed all components and it's still there. Oh well, I'll just run the condenser microphone and not worry about it lol. Happy Father's Day Terry and thanks for another great video!

I wonder if he powered the 12 volt relays by connecting the missing 5 volt rectifier filament line in series with the 6.3 volt other tube filament winding. Connected together, it would resulted in 11.3V, which may have been enough to activate and switch a 12 volt relay. If the line voltage was a little high, as it is, this could have easily produced 12 volts.

Great unmod video. Must weight a pound less without the Kobbler parts. The Ranger must be a very happy radio transmitter now Terry!
Looks like the Kobbler was watching and gave you a thumbs down as he grits his kernel teeth!

another win for DLab ! One question though: the hum heard on the receiver at the end, is that from ground loops ? if you were to use a battery powered receiver that hum wouldn’t be there, right ? ok, that was 2 questions :-)

I've been following your guitar amp videos and didn't realize you also have a ham shack. Now it makes since why you peruse the ham radio swap meets. Does anyone use a keyer anymore or was that just for test requirements? I remember how intimidating 5 words per minute seems back in the day. Really enjoy your videos, thanks.

It's really sad because in general the less experienced or new amp or radio buyers are not aware how cobbled up their new purchases can be, which in turn means a higher price at the repair bench.l
