- Part 2 is finally here. I will post the link for Part 1 featuring King Kobbler. This has been a long term project. More items needing attention kept popping up. I always take additional time to ensure transmitters are stable after re-working so many areas. This one was ravished by the Kobbler. Lucky I had a hanger queen available to retrieve unique components. Now, the transmitter appears to be ready for the owner to enjoy. Always be cautious when purchasing these old radios at swap meets. Take a flashlight, look thru the top, see if there is evidence of butchering. If so, either walk away or low ball the price. There are still a supply of good ones out there. In this case, the repair is more than the purchase price. Here is the link to Part 1: • How to install Push to...

Ah, yes, the wonderful world of mounting hardware buried under other components! Always a chance to get creative. I've used vinyl or heat-shrink tubing on the end of a screwdriver shafts or other long rod to hold the nut long enough to get it started on the screw threads. One time I bent a paper clip around the sides of a hex nut, it held up long enough to start threading by turning the screw. Surgical forceps or hemostats also work well, especially the ones with curved tips.
Thanks as alwsys, Terry, enjoyed your work!
Ha ha us old times need a bit of modulation on our old Johnson now and then (just subscribed to your channel before any more bits fall off ) regards from over the pond
Yes indeed no smoke or fire when you turn it on is a good sign. My Brother Ron NU6F still has his original Viking Valliant he had since 1968 sitting in his closet in his ham shack.
It was a hack job transmitter. But I see it was in good hands with Terry. Some great repair work. Your wife is the best!🥂
Love your videos Terry
Well done Terry. Perseverance and a good parts stash saves the day. Along with a little humor and a supportive wife...well done sir 73 / W6VPS
I love this, even though I was first licensed in 1988 my first transmitter was a Johnson Viking Challenger. It was crystal controlled CW and AM.
Terry love the shirt
Mrs D-Labs made that video for me! Great comment at the end
Such a lucky chap👍🇬🇧. Thanks Terry.
What a mess, fixed by DLAB.... as always. Great job Terry & Marcia !!
Now that's a big Johnson.
That T-shirt!!!!
This radio must've had 866A's as rectifiers originally, since the 3B28's are direct drop-in's that replaces them.
Would have been fun to see a QSO
Terry, I know a "guy"..... some people think of him as a "hack", but I have seen his work. Glad you got your "Johnson" working again! LOL
Nice work Terry, you had your job cut out on that one.
"My Johnson still works" hahaha
Very Clever
amazing video, have you ever been asked to make a convert the BOSS KATANA modelling amp into a tube amp? Would you do it?
T-shirt TMI! LOL
I made a trade for a working Swan 700cx for a Valant. That was ca good deal! Well the caps where replace but notice audio current was at 0. Audio was clipping . Looking at r61 the bias adjustment was open a bad pot. Try cleaning and got it to work . Replace it with a 5,000 ohm pot a easy fixed i able to set at 60ma and she got perfect audio.

Love the shirt. Lol
My son put a fan to cool the amp but he said he attached it to the amp power transformer with a magnet! And now amp doesn’t work. It powers on but no sound. I said I’d ask DLab!
Hey Terry I just picked up a Viking Valiant 1 owner never been “Cobbled”, I also got a NC183D, Heath Q multiplier, and Heath 6er given to me so your video is timely!! However I can only find part 2 of the Valiant PTT. I haven’t fired it up yet, I have a variac but not sure how the mercury vaper tubes will react being brought up slowly. Can you post the Part 1 link and give me your comment about the mercury vaper tubes. I have all the original documents and manuals!! Thank you Terry!
Heres Part 1. I will get back with you soon: ua-cam.com/video/yEBqkZHbMfc/v-deo.html
If you run low on wine, sample some of the local brands here in SouthWest Michigan! Makers Trail has a listing of the wineries, breweries and distilleries in SW Michigian swmichigan.org/makerstrail
Next time you're heading west on I-94, come out and visit the sunset coast and sample the spirits.
I've always hated working in tight corners, especially trying to position nuts like the one for the multi position switch. Keep the radio and amp episodes coming!
D104 mike, I have 2 of those right now, any suggestions on getting those working right?.
What's wrong with them? Symptoms, I mean. And are they pre-amplified or just plain mikes?
@@bobblum5973 I’m sure the electrolytic caps need tp be replaced, but there’s always an impedance issue using them with newer amps, they were originally made for tube amps, and if I remember right, always sounded like the treble was turned all the way up. Would like to get them rebuilt and working with my newer radios.

_EDIT:_ My interest was piqued, so I looked up D-104s online, found this page with schematic. The creator mentions modifying the preamp for better low frequency output, so figured I'd pass it along.

_End Edit_
My experience with D-104s was back in the 1970s on CB radios. If I recall they did have a frequency response tending to emphasize the higher end. Accepting that as just the way they worked, great for quality voice audio.
I don't remember but would assume they use a ceramic element; I think I'd only seen one or two without the preamp, a "power mic" being a must-have during the CB craze, so you might be able to tweak the response curve a bit by modifying the preamp.
Good luck with the two you have, they're good, solid, well performing microphones with classic styling.
Can you fix my golden eagle?
Where did you get your shirt from?
A fellow Ham sent it to me, He had them custom made
@@d-labelectronics - Darn! Guess I'm out of luck, unless I can get a shirt maker to create 1. Thanks, Terry
Ok Terry, where do I get a shirt like that?
A fellow Ham op sent it to me
I need a shirt like that too! I just got a Valiant going and I'm having a blast with it.
Nobody want's a nonworking Johnson!
