I've been playing (on and off) for many years and just started to really try and learn rudiments. My right hand is a machine gun. My left hand is a broken slingshot.
Of all of your skills on the drums, the one I find to be most prodigious is your ability to talk and play at the same time! I can barely chew gum and play a beat. Form words? No way! You are a great communicator.
It was not pretty after 126. My arms rebelled and burst into flames. This is going to be on my routine for all rudiments, especially for stuff like flam taps and Swiss triplets. I've been following MJ for 10 years now without joining mikeslessons. And I can attribute a good portion of what I play to his UA-cam lessons. That's a teacher! I'm getting into a situation where I can finally afford the courses. Soon.
That was fun! I changed it to work on both hands - on beat four of every 2nd measure I do a double paradiddle so it would be left-hand lead for the next 2 bars. Rinse and repeat. I made it to the end but my forearms are tight! haha.
Another great exercise. But can we also take a moment an appreciate the fact that you can communicate effectively and out full sentences together while blazing though these? 😂 Another amazing skill. 🔥🤘🏼
i have been working your 2022 warmup exercises and something that emerged as a practice is that as i increase the speed of the exercise i decrease the dynamics. it adds a layer of challenge but really helps control.
One of the most intriguing challenges Mike, thank you. I am going to stick with this. Perhaps I will reach 120(?) by the time you come to Cardiff next month.
Wow my arms are on fire! Couldn't keep the tempo once you got to 120bpm... but it's the middle of the night and I'm playing on a neck pillow, so I'll have to try again tomorrow!
For me, it was fine I did the whole thing with you, but I couldn't say a word and keep it going, I tried and had to jump back on to finish it out. Props!
I never learned of a paradiddle-diddle. I learned a double paradiddle (RLRLRR, LRLRLL) but that was almost 60 years ago. Ha! I can't play the paradiddle-diddle cleanly even at 60 BPM, so I improvised. I just did singles, omitting the double strokes altogether, since I'm playing with my fingers on a table top (not much bounce)! I have never done anything like this but got to 125 BPM before my hands fell off. After surgical reattachment, I recovered for a bit and then tried again, this time doing my double paradiddles. Whew! Made it fairly cleanly to 110 and had to wait an hour before I could type this. :-) Am I a masochist to say THAT WAS FUN!? Not sure anything will come from it, but I feel like I got my exercise for the day! Thanks Mike!
Thanks for the video Mike, I would also like to see a video where you show an example of how to practice and plan, to achieve real progress. Or do you have a dedicated lesson on your site? Thanks
I do on the site, plus the site has planning tools to help you track everything. The first week is free so give it a shot and if it doesn't work for you you can always cancel before you get charged.
Wow Mike sir I love this exercise at this speak, I love the way you teach and admire the talent you have God bless may you be sucessfull time and again
Love this exercise! it does a great job of metering the transitions that I would always blow through because they were awkward. I do notice your left hand grip tightens up around 110 😉
I could do the whole thing! Though I do probably practice right hand led parradiddlediddles too much though. Stopped at 100 with the left hand led though so there's something to practice
Also, great advice to not try and muscle it out or do it louder when reaching your max, I was just starting to do exactly that as you said it and it really helped!
That was a great one :) At some point (around 115?) I started listening the phrase in a different way. Also I had laughs while you did, when seriously speeding up. Thanks!🍉
TOTES M GOATS that was fantastic! I'm definitely going to be trying this. This might seem like a dumb question but what app or in what way did you get your metronome to automatically move up in tempo? I always have to do it manually.
😂 Nice one. Well I’m not practicing nearly enough but I started twenty minutes ago. I got to 75 on a Roland mesh head (probably needs tightening up) and my hands seized up! It wasn’t smooth either. Kinda lumpy. It smoothed out a little as I relaxed into it but…. This’ll take a while. Common then. Spill 😉
@@tam_ryan1036 I appreciate the honesty, 80 and clean by next week is your goal then. ok so, that is a prototype that I made with Aquarian right before COVID. We stopped working on it for obvious reasons and then it just fell off my radar. That being said, I found myself always grabbing that pad when it was time to do some personal pad work. So, I'm flying down to LA on Wednesday to start talking to them again about this pad and what we could do to make it truly unique, and helpful to all drummers.
@@mikeslessons 😎 No point faking it. I need the rudiment practice and you’re the first drum teacher I’ve seen who’s having some fun and isn’t an old school ego maniac (I assume 😆). Think Whiplash suckin all the love out of it and that’s my early teacher experience. Anyhoo, lot of maple shells rolled down the road since then. So I’m in for a clean 80 and put me on the list for beta testing the new pad ;-) Although I’m Southern UK so that might be a problem. Thanks so much for the inspiration my friend. Now…. stick time! 🙏👍
Mike it would be great if you would release a version with the metronome and the rudiment only. No offence but I was getting distracted when you started talking in between.😅😬🍵🙏
It’s always interesting to see how the opinions of everyone on a certain topic change over the years 😁 I remember the 4 stage practice method where you said that speeding up is bad and now here we are 😅
That opinion is still more than just an opinion. It’s a law! DO NOT speed up when learning new material. This is the opposite of that. This is something that I already know well enough to play while speaking to a camera. If you speed up while your brain is still trueing to learn and assimilate new information you’ll pass it by and never truly get it down. This is basically the opposite of that situation. I would not recommend this for somebody that does t know how to play the paradiddlediddle yet. I hope that helps 🍵🙏🍵🙏
Just teach drum lessons for 30 years straight and you’ll get the hang of it, LOL. As you could see towards the end of the video, it’s still bites me in the ass now and again 😂😂😂 Thanks for the kind words brother 🙏🍵🙏
It all depends on the musical appilcation. In this case it makes sense to keep the accent on the down beat but the accent possibilities are damn near endless. That's the beauty of rudiments :)
I love that! That’s how to do it. As soon as you’re not in control, or feeling smooth it’s time to stop. Then you have a new goal. Clean, comfortable paradiddlediddles at 110bpm. You got this!!! 🙏🍵🙏🙏🍵🍵
One of the nicest, most humble drummer on the internet. 100%. Nuff said!
Far too kind! Much appreciated my friend 🍵🙏🍵🙏
@@mikeslessons you’re the bomb mate 👍🏼
Im just beginning with the drums and JEEZ. This exercise made me realize how weak my left arm is compared to my right

A GREAT teacher!

Finally Bring Sally Up Challenge for drummers , Thanks Mike!
Is that the push up challenge?
yes:)

I pooped out around 90 Mike. Fun workout. Keep them coming! Love all of your drum lessons and your life lessons too!

Been following you for years. You always make terrific content that is so applicable. What metronome app do you use?
Great exercise! how do you program the metronome to change speed gradually? thanks!
That was fun, thanks Mike.
You are very welcome my friend! 🍵🙏🍵🙏
Great warmup / lesson Mike!
I didn't make it much past 90 bpm 😅 I gotta work on them paradiddlediddles 😊
90 is still cooking! Next up, 100bpm!
I love this kind of challenge ! This is a very good idea for a video :)
Love this one! Simple but really effective. Definitely need to try applying this to some other rudiments :)
"I'm having to really concentrate" he says while talking. :D
Awesome as always
Nice! I'll try tomorrow but Paradiddlediddle+double paradiddle so it's mirrored. Btw what a fantastic teacher

How did you program the metronome to speed up?
That’s what I would like to know Mike ?
That way amazing!!!
Bro I been watching you since you were in the drum lab in the corner with 360p quality teaching paradiddle, diddle, bro😂😂
Great idea for an ongoing lesson Mike, is this using the click metronome app still ? I couldn’t figure how you get it to change tempos
No, it’s using the web app that I created with Lou M. called the GrooveScribe. It’s free for everyone. The link is in the description
Dear Mike, this doubles as ASMR. ❤
Also, great advice to not try and muscle it out or do it louder when reaching your max, I was just starting to do exactly that as you said it and it really helped!
AWESOME!

nice job man !
Are you double stroke rolling on the diddles at the higher bpm or single stick all the way?
solid mike.. nice and warm. also, you're gettin' pretty jacked yo.
Wow!

The click from the pad is so nutty
Well done.
Looks like u were using a french grip with ur right hand? Is it easier to keep the momentum by incorporating that grip? Thanks
What's the name of the metronome you are using and how did you set it to change
Got to 124 and the hands couldn't keep up😂This is a fun exercise❤
That’s pretty freaking fast man. You should be proud. I look forward to seeing you at 130!
@@mikeslessons Thank you so much🫂Will surely work on this ❤
Got to 130🤩It was so fun practicing this❤
This should be a series with all norable stickings to increase the endurance
It is! It’s waiting for you right now on www.mikeslessons.com
I followed through till the end.😊
Hi Mike - what metronome do you have on your tablet, I've looked for an app with those big numbers but can't find one. Thanks.
Link is in the text underneath the video
What metronome did you use to do the speed step ups please?
practice this every day , sometimes i make 130 but as of lately mostly 120 .....ebb and flo
Great Exercise! Giving this a go when i get home later 🤙👍 It actually reminds me of the Joe Franco fill from his solo in "Klash-Ka-Bob" (Good Rats)

How bout you do this with me, tell me how far you got, and then I'll tell you what pad that is. Deal?

That's another cool exercise... 110 bpm started with right hand / 100 with my left hand... what's your metronome app' Mike ?
Does your metronome increase the tempo gradually or only at the barlines? I kept falling behind
What metronome are you using?
Great exercise, lost it at 90 bpm 😂
Gracias
You are very welcome my friend!
mike teacher would tell me what is your wall symbal frame ?
Does anyone know what app he is using?
What ype of sticks kight?
Mike my master I stop on 90bpm
Trying to play this on the top of a rolled up yoga mat cuz I have no practice pad 😭. 100bpm is so hard with no rebound
130bpm is my new goal , @112bpm broke into a sweat , @ 118 the wheels just flew off the truck 😚...
YES! I love that. You got this Mike!!!
how do I program the app to increase speed like that
Can you also share a video on obtaining the perfect hi hat sound? Ur hats have the best sound, which is hard for me to replicate. Thanks

Will do!
I actually LIKED the commentary / found it encouraging!
how did the metronome increase like that?
Alright now play that all again left hand leading ;)
Only 115 😓 cheers from the Philippines
Shoot! 120…is as far as I go right now!
It was a little hard for me to focus on your paradiddles, what with that beautiful Gretsch kit sitting behind you..

Your accenting with your right hand but not the left. A Murray Spivack thing when studied with him.

i got 4:21 with just my hands! ( at work)
Stopped at 110 bpm my left hand was not comfortable
