All you beginners, follow this great teachers advice! Practise your paradiddles! And your drumroll! Make it a regular practise for some 30 minutes or more, everyday. I belong to the ones that at least followed the drumroll excersise advice but not the paradiddle advice. For the teacher: the reason I did not follow the paradiddle advice was because of it was boring. No one really showed me what can be done in actual playing, when using paradiddles. So, I think a great idea for a future video is to start out with using some paradiddles in regular playing. Answer the question of why paradiddles are so useful? Play for us! Then break it down into excersises, and many more beginners will feel motivated to do this boring stuff. :)

The "snapping in public" thing had me howling from laughter 🤣

I've been playing about 6 months and haven't gotten very fast, but this is helping quite a bit!

Thanks for this…a great exercise, which at the moment I can get evenly to 120bpm. For speed, I find it’s important to relax the hands but still remember to squeeze on the accent to stop it from bouncing up, which wrecks the evenness and hence speed. All of your videos have and continue to help me and I am sure many many others.😊 Peter

Never "squeeze" your grip. Let the rebound do it's thing and almost "let the stick do the work".
Always stay relaxed and if you feel tension/fatigue in your hands, stop immediately and rest. Then, start over slowly and gradually increase the tempo.
A good rule of thumb actually: The more you drop your sticks, the more you know you're starting to relax :D

Ok and that’s really interesting and at the same time puzzlingly for me. My understanding is that when you accent a beat you drop the stick from a higher level…but if the subsequent rebound is not ‘checked’ it will bounce back higher and make the following tap strokes more challenging. Perhaps “squeeze” is the wrong word. Don’t feel you need to respond but I do think this is a fundamentally important issue for many drummers. Peter 🤔

C.J., thank you for sharing the exercise with all of us.
My problem is that I go downstairs with the best intentions of practicing, but after about 5 minutes I put on the music and start playing, and my practice goes out the window. I guess I lack that extra discipline.😢❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️

I know it can be tough, but try putting your phone on flight mode, put a timer on 20mins and only practice to a metronome.
You gotta resist the temptation to just “jam around” the kit.
Treat yourself at the end of a practice session to play to some songs!

Hi CJ, your videos always useful and with fun!
I practiced as this video for a while. I still have a question: Why this practice can increse hand speed?

    • @ThatSwedishDrummer
      @ThatSwedishDrummer  3 місяці тому +2

      Hey!
That's a good question, and my answer is: Because you're working on both accents and ghost notes. Single strokes and ghost notes, and the more you practice this - you'll develop better fine motor skills in your hands, which leads to more precise playing and speed :)
The important thing is to practice it with incremental steps!

    Thanks for the video!!

That's totally up to you, and your schedule.
But definitely try to work on it for at least 15 minutes per day (if possible), and try to increase the tempo from where you started with about 5 bpm's at a time.
