Sub-Terra was a 6m / 20ft drop-tower ride in the dark, manufactured by ABC Rides. It opened at the start of the season in 2012, and in May of 2012 it was closed so the 'experience' could be improved. This video shows both experiences, first showing the improved 'experience', followed by its opening day programme.
The theme of the attraction was a sequel to the back story of Nemesis, Alton Towers' suspended roller coaster. During excavation of the Nemesis site, eggs were discovered in an underground network of caves. Sub-Terra's pre-show involved guests descending a lift to the caves for 'civilian viewing' of an egg. Guests then entered a chamber containing the Nemesis egg, and boarded one of four small drop tower rides.
The lights go out, the egg hatches, and the ride performed its small drop into a cavern. The 10 seater cars were fitted with air-tube leg ticklers, and each seat had a hidden vibrating poker in the back rest.
The tower rides' loading station, was unusually at the top of the drop, so after the drop and all the effects, the cars were raised back to the loading area, and guests were ushered into another lift. On its journey back to ground level, the lift is attacked! The lights go out, the lift then shook as its panels collapsed. Guests were then ordered into 'quarantine' were the exited via a walk-through scare maze.
Sub-Terra only operated for four seasons.
the only thing i remember about this ride is something jabbing me in the back and it really hurt.

I guess this ride was too niche and it would have been better suited for the Hallowe'en event. I did manage to ride it once though in 2013 (same year as Smiler debut) and my experience was more like your longer clip Col.

When I went to Thorpe park Derren browns ghost train had a 3 hour queue luckily we had disabled passes

I went on this with my sister for the first time, if you have asd, or adhd, this might not be good for you. Its very emmersive, and sensory. Smoke, smells, things that touch you. I avoided the spike into my back, just lean forward. But the things on my feet... I screamed so much.

@@barrelrollbaphy Yeah, it's always good to try something new, or to challenge yourself, but for me that was a little too much.
I barely remember this ride but I remember for some reason it gave me a panic attack and I almost passed out afterwards. But I don’t even remember it being that scary, I think it was just too much at once
The ride itself isnt too bad it's the whole thing with the lift and the actors and the actual experience that makes its scary.
yeah, it was more than 'a small drop ride' as an overall experience! Even then, the drop ride element did was it was supposed to do, if a little short!

I don't know about this ride although from the look of it and the response of everyone coming off i might have more fun on my stair lift it has a high incline a sharp bend going up and coming down is fab as long as the power grid has not gone out then it's roll down with a full view of the high staircase LOL !! Nice one !! ;-)

Sure is nice of Phalanx to allow civilians into their highly-secret research base. What an incredible queue, I'm sure glad the ride totally lives up to it.

Looks very similar in concept to Alien Encounter at Magic Kingdom except that one didn’t have a drop. Also doesn’t look as scary, Alien Encounter traumatized me as an 8 year old not knowing what it was.
lol The drop here was really short, just enough to give you that split second of freefall. There were loads of effects to, leg ticklers, water sprays, vibrating prods in the back of your seat. Then the exit lift, followed by a scare maze exit. It was poor when it first opened, but improved over time.

I hope this ride is back one day, but hopefully they can get both drop towers to work in sync, so there's no awkward time when you can clearly see they're waiting for the next train to dock properly before the computer system continues.

It was like the Alton Towers version of the closed Disneyland ride, Stitch's Great Escape (aka Extra TERRORstrial Alien Encounter when it first opened).
The ride was pretty well excecuted with decent themeing, it's just the actual ride part was so short.
Yes! lol we can see why they intended it as a longer 'experience', the drop did have the same effect as the much larger tower rides, but that alone wouldn't be much of a ride indeed! lol
Never been on it myself but they could of dropped you then instead of the lift part announced over the pa bring them up bring them up then when back at the top another drop or something 🤷🏼♂️

Hahaha! I went on something very similar to this in the early 2000's (when I was 10) in Disney called Terrorestrial and it was terrifying. So I feel your pain.

The workload and attention to detail that went into building this, plus the planning and discussion that contributed to its origins culminated in a truly ridiculously pathetic, in fact there are no words to describe the truly crappness of this experience. I cringe for those poor am dram actors that have to perform around it . Whoever dreamed up this poop and actually got the idea off the ground must have some clout. But also needs to be violently sacked and prosecuted for wasting everyone’s time.

Unfortunately, the scare maze part of the attraction gave me permanent tinnitus. The rest of the experience was awesome though.

Went a few weeks ago and when we went down in the lift and waited to go through door they had to temporarily close because someone had been injured so it put me off and didn't end up going on it
Why did this shut so quickly?
Low ratings and after the Smiler crash they needed price cuts to take place. Six rides closed including Sub-Terra. Among these were Charlie and the chocolate factory and Hex. Only Hex and the driving school opened back up.

as you can see by the queue we in britain do not cut in line unlike some countries we are respectful of the rules at theme parks and whoever thinks they are higher than everyone and can go ahead will be frowned upon by everybody else politness of everybody in line dissapears and they are told to get the f*ck back in line and are blocked by the people who are patiently waiting from going any further

Here because i was reminded about sub terror during the virtual towers stream. This ride did have a few nice effects but my god was it short ik towers isnt as advanced as Disney world but my god they surly could have done better than that. I honestly think iv had more fun on a stair lift than this all it is is a single drop some admittedly cool effects some banning in a lift and a run outside with strobe lights assaulting your eyes.
Im guessing its no longer running cant say im sad about that they really needed to go back to the drawing board on this one

Why was this so short-lived? It looks awesome!
In short, it wasn't getting good reviews and then the smiler incident happened, so to cut costs this ride was stopped because it had a high cost on the wage front (as in, it cost a lot to pay all the staff, and who are the first to go when the rich get into trouble? It's the poorest to go first...).
It may return however, from what I can see, the maintenance of the ride is being worked on, so, who knows?

unfortunately it’s closed; the dungeons is a good alternative, though. new to the park, it’s got an interactive / walk through experience different from sub terra but very immersive - it’s where charlie and the chocolate factory used to be in cloud cuckoo land :)

Nemesis at alton towers was first... go to Google and search. Thorpe Park has the other coster, it came after, Thorpe Park is ran by the same people tho so they are not copying.
