Join us on Expedition weekly as we look at the abandoned history of Nemesis: Sub-Terra at Alton Towers in England. This short lived underwhelming attraction was closed after a few seasons. A unworthy sequel to the best roller coaster in the UK Nemesis.

I feel the marketing guy who did nemesis missed his call directing dr who and the guy who did the smiler and thirteen should have done horror film
Yeah. Imagine the results.
I love doctor who that would be a great peter capaldi episode
Imagine missy or the master in a smiler themed episode

Oh God... Nemesis Sub-Terra... I remember me and my mates at a school trip accidentally running out of a fire escape thinking that was the way we were meant to be going. It really broke the immersion of the story, being set miles underground, so it was funny just running out of a door into a wooded area of the UK.
I had a similar experience but I ran the to the entrance which wasn't there anymore as we had dropped down. And me and my mate were panicking because there was a timer counting down to when the door would be closed and I don't think we ever ran faster.
Joseph Cain I did the exact same palm XD
I Literally did the exact same thing lol, I was so scared
You got to go to Alton towers on a school trip? Shit man our "school trips" got changed a couple years ago to revision and charity work
Lol I hopefully am going to Alton Towers Soon and try to ride nemesis
The really sad thing is, Alton Towers doesn't have the restrictions of having to be 'family friendly' like Disney does. They could have had
something akin to the brilliant Extra TERRORestrial Alien Encounter and it might have stood for many years.
Different budget, couldn't afford something as crazy or detailed as Disney sadly.
I actually enjoyed Nemesis: Sub-Terra, especially after the changes. It wasn't a breath-taking experience, but it was a good overall ride that added variety and depth to the park. I'd love to see it return in the future!
COASTER BOT 2 I went on it once years back but ever since it’s just been closed with the army truck sat decaying outside
i’m the same. i remember having a great time messing about with my friends at the beginning part where they’re shouting at you and i genuinely enjoyed the concept and ride
@@andie8989 I LOVED been shouted at by the guards. The ride took on a different level when you and your friends acted back like this was life and death adding to the kids in the rooms experience. Major props to those actors keeping that level of intensity all shift
I wish I could've gone on it 😩
@@mrberry1147 I do to
Off-topic but it was mentioned, I went into thirteen thinking it was a ghost train like the Darren brown one at Thorpe Park, the drop was an 'oh fuq' moment but I think the queue was scarier than the actual ride itself with the whole counting and the strange whispers and the lightning thing, the way they advertised it was so different though, I feel like thats also what they did here, everyone was hype for some super scary ride and it was just a bit disappointing.
I agree about the queue being scarier than the ride! Im easily startled by loud noises, so the steam blowers through the queue made me jump constantly
That queue still scares the shit out of me!! I keep thinking someone is gonna appear behind me
I had to cover my eyes and close my eyes due to the lightning 😀☝️
Here's how I would have done the ride, assuming a huge budget.
Guests enter the queue, which is themed to the Phalanx research facility. They wait in the lobby, where videos give them a primer into the history of Phalanx and the exciting new discovery below ground (backstory and basic ride experience). Groups of 40 are ushered into a room by a cast member, who gives a safety spiel before letting guests into the viewing lift (four rows of ten) and put on their shoulder harnesses. The lift descends a little bit, then stops. Lights go off, emergency red lighting comes on. Ride vehicle shakes as speakers play Evil Nemesis Creature Noises. Emergency lights flicker, go off, flicker again, then stay off as the ride vehicle plummets to the bottom of the 100-foot shaft, coming to rest in front of an animatronic of the creature, which "appears" as a jumpscare via strobes and loud noises. More interactive elements in darkness (leg ticklers, back prodders) as the crew above frantically work to get the elevator back up to safety; guests hear this through garbled radio chatter. Creature lunges for guests; elevator is brought back up just in time and guests are ushered off.
that sounds so much more fun
Send this with your CV to Alton Towers.
Alton seriously hire this guy!
200% better then the meh the ride actually was.
Alex Snitzer this sounds super cool! could maybe add some extra "levels". similar to how tower of terror has different drops. maybe at the beginning you drop a little to one level where you can see evidence of a monster or something trying to break into the "elevator" then it drops again to the point you mentioned. or maybe a part where you think you are going back up but the monster "grabs" the vehicle. idk i havent actually ever been to alton towers but i love scary themed rides and what you described sounds amazing!
@@ladydoombot only thing i would add to this is that there should be a 'safety shield' covering the eggs before your harnesses are put on, just as a loose attempt to explain why they are even required
Alex Snitzer sounds a bit short honestly all I’d add to that would be they exit the elevator first, something similar to ExtraTERROResftrial and then the ending part is the elevator thing
I was a part of the original scare actor team in 2012 and then 2013.
Bloody great job, met some lovely people and I miss it quite a great deal. Granted not something you could do forever.
It's a shame to see the ride die on its arse the way it did, but hopefully the new concept will breathe life back into it.
Haven't been Towers in years so looking forward to coming back to see all the changes on the park. =)
Wish you said the ride went from sub terrible to sub par at 7:38
I considered it but okay fitted better haha
Expedition Theme Park haha fair enough! Thank you for making great videos by the way ❤️
This had so much potential, sad to see it fall flat. Just reminds me of how great Alien Encounters was.
I rode Alien Encounters at seven years old, I swore to my parents I was a big girl and could handle it...I couldn't lol
@@SnufflePuff24 😆 That's funny! Just the concept of Alien Encounters gives me goosebumps...but that's why I love it.
I really wanted to go on that ride too welp
@@SnufflePuff24 I rode it when I was five and found it FUNNY.
I don't see anyone else mentioning that the ride's back open by now (probably because this is a 5 year old video)
I remember going on this ride accidentally with my friends dad (who I didn't really know too well), mistaking it for nemesis. One of the weirdest experiences I've ever had, all I can remember from the actual ride was just being shouted at a lot and wanting to get the hell out of there.
This ride looks like a cross between ExtraTERRORestrial at Disney and The Crypt at King's Island
I did go on Nememis Sub Terra, but I didn't really enjoy it, & I came out looking like a ghost. I would say Alton Towers could now do with another water ride x
I miss the log flume, Wicker Man is good though
I personally don’t think the uk is a great place for water rides since most of the time we have rain and shit weathers.
@@vainpiers I agree. It is too cold for water rides 🤣
I agree, Alton Towers does need another classic water ride. The only decent one now, as far as I can remember - due to me not having gone since 2014 - is Congo River Rapids.
@@sarahwatkins4520 decent is a bold stretch, it desperately needs some TLC. And they don't run the waterfall section anymore either
I actually really enjoyed sub-terra, it was pretty scary as a kid not gonna lie
I've never been so terrified in my life when I went on that thing. I didn't go back in there ever since. I was disappointed when it closed because I was ready to go back in.
@@BoldOne8760then come on back
"For some merlin reason"
Yes
Nemesis sub-terrable
And 4 years later its back while nemesis undergoes major retrack
I rode Subterror when I was 15 with my parents and sister. I have to say, the ride certainly wasn't the best, but seeing my middle aged father practically pushing kids out of the way to get to get to the exit lifts sets Subterror as one of the best themed rides Alton Towers has ever had.
For some reason I always thought this ride was an indoor coaster, didn't know it was a drop ride.
Linking it to Nemesis never made much sense to me, seeming as the story and theming of it seemed so concrete
I remembered thinking it was just some military site because it was closed when i first went.
I honestly dont know why people hate on this ride, I rode the first version and loved it, I also rode the improved version not knowing about the scare maze, I honestly thought it was brilliant, now alton towers numbers are way up for the first time since smiler I pray they bring it back, although modify the story a little,
It was boring, and on the day I rode it, the actors weren't convincing despite their best efforts. A spotty teen in a soldier uniform trying to shout orders at us all actually made it funny rather than scary. And there was no pay off at the end, the drop being tame and predictable. Just an over all poor concept.
And it definitely didn't help that it was sat next to one of the best ride experiences in the world... Nemesis.
They could have, just spent the money on an awesome (And badly needed) Flat ride. A Soriani and Moser "Transformer" with alien theming to fit in would still be thrilling crowds today....
I remember going on this with my dad when I was about 7 or 8 and I was so scared that when they said to get into the elevator part at the end I bolted and left my dad trailing behind.
I was in Alton towers last Saturday as we were walking away from nemesis towards wickerman the queue time board for nemesis sub terra showed -42. Could that be a secret message or something
Well, Project 42 was a part of Scarefest...maybe it was supposed to hint at that?
@bemorebroadway probably
Anyone else notice how the nemesis logo looks like the resident evil 2 eye
Merlin Exec 1: 'Hey, I have an idea to make a ride with a story'
Exec 2: 'Cool, any idea of what the story will actually be and how we'll bring that to life?'
Exec 1: Ohh that's just details don't worry about it
Who here after it reopened this season
I remember the back prodders hurting like hell and the leg slappers leaving marks. I always thought if they added more drops to it it would have been better
well.... it open again. when i was like 5 i wanted to go on sub terra but it was closed, but its reponed and i should be going later this year, im so exited. :)
I went on sub terror when I was ten and literally was so scared mainly the people shouting at you
I fainted and the people still yelled at me whilst my parents called 999....
I remember that we were looking for the enterance for nemesis and accidentally went on this ride
@@eloisemason2475 yeah same
Watching this in 2023, it's crazy how a negative-rated ride (Nemesis Sub-Terra) returns.
And a positive-rated ride (Hex) has been closed for very long, ongoing repairs...
I've really gone off alton towers since they removed ripsaw, submission and of course sub terra. Which I thought was a great ride. I just enjoyed the concept from start to finish. The park now is just too full of rollercoasters and does really need to focus on more thrill rides.
too true. including the cbeebies rollercoaster they not have I think its 10 rollercoasters there, which is nice but it needs some midway rides to fill the gaps
@Elfoxoloco didn't think there where many topspin rides left in the UK. Only ripsaw and a traveling one I've been on.
@@Adzcantsing there are several in Thorpe Park alone. Only alton has removed almost all it had
They've removed Ripsaw?!! :-(
@@BenjyDale a few years back mate. They also removed submission too and nemsubterra so now there is only the enterprise flat rise left
It was actually a good horror ride one of the best I have been on :) sadly only lasted few years the mini scarefaze was great although I got a gasmask in my face and nearly a bloody nose should have been an 15 it was scary
It would be cool if this came back 😉
I actually quite liked sub terra. I went on it after the scare maze was added and thought it was pretty intense. There was a lady bawling her eyes out at the end because she found it so frightening.
Must have caught it on a good day.
I remember going on this ride when I was 9 and when they where ushering you into the elevator, they forgot me so I got left in the room I ended up curling up and crying until the workers got me
Like what the great scholar Shawn Sanbrooke once said, it seems after the smiler crash, Alton towers and Blackpool pleasure beach switched places. Before the crash, Alton was on top of its game, the best British theme park and of the highest regard and Blackpool pleasure beach was in ruins, most of the rides standing but not operating and an overall mess. However, after the crash, Alton towers became in ruins and many rides SBNO while BPB became new, fresh, gets praises from enthusiasts and the GP alike. I just hope one day Alton gets back on their feet and the general public don't see it as "leg chop off land".
Scrambled 59 blimey, leg chop off land! I do agree though, both with you and Shawn. It upsets me that Alton Towers has got to the state it is now, especially when you watch back old videos from the 80s and 90s and it reminds you just what a fantastic place it was, and as you say, the number 1. It was such an amazing atmosphere with all the shows, street entertainment and fantastic rides around every corner. Now many corners are like eerie ghost towns. I will be so happy the day they return to glory, if that day ever does come (soon I hope!).
There's a stark difference between praises from the General Public and praises from enthusiasts, the prior 'we' don't really hear about. The admission numbers will reflect on how well BPB are doing, but prior to Icon that park still wasn't gaining large numbers despite a new found respect from enthusiasts. I think it's very interesting how every seems to forget the economics behind having a severe incident occur at a theme park. Towers numbers sank 25%, which equates to well more than 25% of the profit. No wonder Towers had to change. Hopefully with the rise of Wicker Man the park can regain momentum, investments, and praise.
With the announcement today (17th May 2023) of Nemesis: Sub-Terra reopening on the 27th, I guess this attraction is no longer considered "abandoned". I do wonder if they have changed anything to do with its story though. 🤔
Well now nemesis is shut and this is open
Wait, there's a Willy Wonka ride out there?! Is it any good?
Have to wait for the video hehe
it actually was a decent ride based upon the book not the movies. sadly it does not operate any more as is set for a retheme for the 2019 season. in this video it said hex closed also but that has since reopened after some restoration and improvements on the ride
I already did a video on hex!
It was a short boat ride followed by a simulator
It permanently closed in 2015 but I rode it and it was pretty good!
Honestly, if they just made this a crazy drop ride indoors, it could have been awesome
… they did?
I like zombies and stuff so when I went on it for scarefest I was surprised that the ride was still there except it wasn't functioning. The egg was still there by the way it was immersive most of the old ride was there like the lift and the opening area with minor new parts like vines and zombies sadly I never got to ride on the actual ride only videos off youtube. The scaremaze is great though
By the way the lift doesn't work now you just walk through it
Who’s here after the ride has been opened… again
its mad to watch this knowing its now back open and nothing has changed
That powerpoint like a kid in school 😂 "What I'm Working On: Fireworks"
Who’s here after sub Tera came back 🎉
Meeeeee
Never got to ride this unfortunately they had a great story to use but yet again Merlin screwed it up. Hopefully the scare maze will be good.
I went on this ride with my family in 2013. We hadn't seen any promotional material for it, so went in completely blind. As a result, the surprise factor made it really enjoyable - one of my favourite rides of the day. We went again the following year, but with the element of surprise gone it was as you said, "a themed fire escape".
I had much the same experience and was delightfully entertained! I enjoyed the intense military theme and the egg was far more innovative than I expected!
Never been to Britain at all so no brittish parks for me but this ride actually sound pretty sweet at least on paper. But maybe the drop weren't forcefull enough or the hype killed it like only hype can do.
LordFlanders I visited after it closed and missed riding it sadly
Went on it once, if you don't scare easily you're basically told ten minutes of story before a 20ft drop, then out you go.
It was rubbish, I just felt angry after going on it, it was that bad. The leg "ticklers" should have been called "pounders" as they were very uncomfortable and slightly painful
*Laughs in 2023*
I love alton towers but regarding this ride , this video was better than the experience
I remember riding this when I was in uni. I'm a big guy, 6ft 7", and the restraints were so horrible for me that they crushed my shoulders and chest and almost didn't lock. I saw the ride attendants looking concerned, as my row's restraints clearly weren't locking properly. Took me a while to push it down enough for the ride to start.. almost had to get off lol
Hex still exists 🥵🥵 also 2018 scare Maze project 42 wasn’t that bad
Holy Beepers It closed for a while (a refurbishment I think?) at the same time as the others shut, but it’s open again now
Why not ''Nemesis: Sub Terror''
Like, instead of the drop, extend the ride to express the effects in depth. Shake the seats, jolt guests towards the egg, and make it feel like the alien in teething on your head. Freak the guests out. Spray hot water on them to feel like blood from the alien exploding of eating someone, take notes ALTON!
9:47 hmm seems very true
I had to go around this alone due to a friend being claustrophobic.
I had a great time. I'm a fan of horror and I was placed in a group of chavvy 14 year olds that had spines of jelly and wha was probably their poor guide or something.
It seems teenagers and certain other people are easily influenced by the themes of the attraction. One idiot tried mouthing back to the staff (that was fun). Knowing it was all deliberately made to scare you, I'm sitting there *LAUGHING* in the drop tower. I sat next to the woman that was white as a sheet. All the leg ticklers and stuff were working.
So, comes to the 'evacuation' bit and the rumbly 'elevator'. I suddenly had 3 teenage girls I did not know clinging to me. The hall to the exit actually had other stuff (carpet was hung from the ceiling and there was more smoke and strobe lighting. I couldn't see a damn thing so I was follwing the wall to keep my orientation)
So, I was one of the first out, having gotten ushered by the girls to lead the way. I stood near the exit watching some people sprint out of the building at speed. It was highly amusing. I think that was the best part, I got to laugh at other people that actually got the spook.
Looks pretty good to me, especially considering the low-themed rides of other parks.
The most entertaining thing about this were some of the other guests attending. They did the whole "What happens here stays in here" and two guys just turned to each other as one yelled "we can finally profess our love to one another".
I'm so glad I didn't wait in the queue when it first opened though.
Sorry but Sub Terra with the horror maze added to the end was epic in my opinion! Was a great themed, scary attraction that I generally felt immersed in. Shame it's just Project 42 now which in my opinion is the worst Scarefest maze
I'd really love to see an updated video for both this and Nemesis Reborn! Although, maybe Reborn isn't old enough yet to have a full on retrospective history video on
I really enjoyed Sub Terra. My brother worked at the park for a number of seasons and was friends with a lot of the actors who worked on the ride so we were doubly tormented in the scare maze afterwards. Id always hope they would bring it back one day
The main thing I remember of Sub-Terra was how painful the back prodders were
I’m very late commenting on this video so I apologise!
This ride feels like a fever dream. Anybody I speak to about it *doesn’t* remember it, I feel slightly crazy when I mention it despite the building still being in the Forbidden Valley area. I went on it during a school trip and I actually really enjoyed it. I think it was a good introduction to drop rides. Granted, the theming wasn’t exactly ‘family-friendly’, but as parents you know your children and what they can handle - some children are thrill seekers and would have really liked it too.
I do hope it re-opens in the future with some alterations. I think it’s a waste of the space otherwise.
9:47 stranger things indeed have happened 💀
I worked at Alton Towers the year after the smiler crash. During that time Merlin showed us a cctv footage video of the same drop ride as Nemesis Sub Terror at another Merlin attraction. In the video the safety bars have been lowered but just before the ride goes up a child can be seen squeezing out of the harness and moving to the the side of the drop rides enclosure. After this incident we were told all the rides that use that harness had been told to stop operation until the harness were sorted out.
Oh hell no... your comment made my blood run cold for a bit! I'm an attractions operator in the US and have seen some wild things, and thought a child climbing out of their restraints is mortifying
Btw as of the 2023 season I believe (might be wrong) Nemesis Sub-Terra was reopened and operates in what is now Phalanx valley.
I Love How You Changed The Title Of The Video Since Sub-Terra Is Coming Back! 😎
Now that it’s reopened, i tried it yesterday. I can see why the original version wasn’t highly acclaimed, as apart from the lifts and drop, there isn’t much content, and the drop is underwhelming. Nevertheless, it’s still fun!
Personally i loved it. I could see how hard they tried to do ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter and it kind of worked. I have not done the new stich version but i'm thinking its not as good?
A prequal or a sequal to nemisis could have potential
Nemesis: You know, I don't really like talking about Sub-Terra. All I want to say is that it just didn't work.
Oblivion: Nemesis Sub-Terra was Alton Towers attempting to do something different with their rides. They didn't just want to make a thrilling experience, they wanted more.
Air: It was different. It wasn't a rollercoaster, it wasn't a dark ride. Well, it was, but the ride portion only lasted about a few seconds. The rest of it was like a scare maze, and it wasn't that good, honestly.
Rita: You gotta admit though, the backstory and theming for Sub-Terra was great. Alton Towers really knows how to generate hype.
Th13teen: I remember seeing the commercial for Sub-Terra for the first time, and I got chills up my spine watching it because it really did look scary.
Smiler: I'll give them credit for trying to diversify the selection of rides, though. If they put more thought into it, I think Sub-Terra would've been an absolutely phenomenal experience. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
Wicker Man: Let's just hope that the next time they make a dark ride, they learn their lesson from Sub-Terra.
Good video. I went in Project 42 last weekend and it was the WORST maze at Alton by far. It just seemed lazy and rushed - hardly any actors or scares. The entire egg system from the observation chamber was still present and it would also appear the drop towers are still in there too.
Maybe it's because i never saw the adverts, but i love nemesis subterror! If you're expecting a rollercoaster i can see how you'd be disappointed, but honestly for me and everyone i've been on it with, it’s been pretty scary
i remember going on this as a kid who was very excited from watching the trailers, and was very impressed
This might sound a bit crazy but I recon they’ll reopen that
I went through the new maze last night, it was okay, but I was more interested in what remained of sub terra. As predicted, all the seats have been removed but the egg along with the platform was still there. Didn’t get an in depth look because I got chased out by one of the actors lol.
This is gonna be a wall of text, so bust out the snack of your choosing to condescendingly eat while reading this opinion piece.
I'm an American, and have never left the country. That being said, the UK is one of the places that I want most to travel to, and Alton Towers is something that I'm not leaving Britain until I've been to. I've always been very impressed by the theming of all of Alton Towers' rides. In other theme parks, particularly those in the Southeastern US that I've been to, it's incredibly common for parks to pretend as though you're not in the middle of, say, Metro Atlanta in the case of my home park, Six Flags Over Georgia. When you, for example, go to the area where Batman: the Ride is located, it's supposed to be a recreation of a seedy place in Gotham, and the main building of that ride is meant to be Gotham's water treatment site. Alton Towers differs from this norm I've noticed, in that it never pretends that it's a locale that it isn't. The lore of every major attraction is painfully aware of the fact that it's in Alton Towers, and constantly they pay homage to this by referencing local folklore of the area or by saying something like "Hey, so we were doing some renovation in this one section of the park and we may have kinda awoken and unearthed an Eldritch horror, so sorry for the inconvenience :)" They've built a rich catalogue of stories at that park and it's always stood out to me as an exceptionally-conceived theme park.
Why do I comment this on this video? Idk I kinda just thought about it while watching. The whole "Nemesis had a secret egg that we just discovered, we think we've got it under control now tho :)" themeing is really interesting and more believeable to me than being in, say, the Toy Story-themed section of Disney World, because with Disney parks they never acknowledge that this is the middle of a theme park. It's a different and entirely valid approach to themeing, but that's what makes attractions like these so refreshing for me to see, because, while they're spinning a yarn, they're doing so while also acknowledging the fact that that yarn takes place in a theme park.
TL;DR: Alton Towers' different method of themeing rides is immensely refreshing for my filthy American ass to see.
P.S.: Banger vids, I do quite like this channel.
you wont be able to ride nemeis not unless you go by novemebr 6 because it will get worked in until 2024
@@mradam6815 I saw. Sucks because the ride looks fine based on current footage
Interesting. I wish we still had an alien encounter like ride again
Nemesis Sub-Terra is/was a great experience when it was completed and I'm gutted it's closed. The ride was closed due to multiple safety reasons and incidents and requires a new restraint system. I would love to see it re-open though as Alton are just losing so many rides 😔
Well…
Can you do a video on Charlie and the Chocolate ride please? Thanks! This is the first time I’ve heard of it being a ride.
I went on Nemesis Subterra and we actually really enjoyed the ride! However, for us once was enough, and we only went on it that one time before it closed. We’re going to Alton Towers this Saturday so will definitely be going on Project 42!
Who is watching in 2023 and saying Nemesis Sub-Terra is back open lol 🤣😅😆😂
Well it’s coming back this year wonder what’s gunna happen to this video
Bet no one expected a Subterra comeback when this video came out, haha!
Those back rods were frankly painful and hated every second off it. Glad it closed
four years later, SURPRISE, SUB TERRA IS BACK
ITS BACK
many years after this video was made sub terra has returned nothing was took out when it closed
I accidentally went on this when meaning to go on the actual Nemesis, I just followed my mates 😂🙄
I 100% hated every second of it. To just go in and get shouted at by some guys was really weird, then for it to all be weird.
Definitely the worst thing I’ve ever been on, especially when I was expecting a great rollercoaster 😂😂
I love how he changed the title because of it reopening 😂❤
Your doubting was wrong its back
Only went on once and it broke down immediately. So not the best experience.
I didn't know this had shut, but I'm not surprised. It was boring. And it's hard to be immersed into a scenario with 15 year old skinny teens playing soldiers and shouting in your face. Still, at least one of the best coasters in the world was right next to it... Bring dynamo back if anything, or a Huss booster or something. Alton towers is badly lacking good flat rides.
I absolutely loved sub terra! One of my favourite rides there. I’ve been gutted that it’s been shut down every time I’ve been
I always wondered what the building in the forbidden valley was for...
Morden day person here, it's back with a vengeance
How many theme parks are gonna regret going with a deadly virus theme
The changes sound great and the theme looks amazing I really hope they get it open again soon
20 ft drop?? That’s like one of those little kid drop towers!
Nemesis sub terra Reopened with Nemesis Gating A reTrack And the news station. And will become nemesis reBirth
They opened nemesis sub terror whilst they closed nemesis for a re track
It really seems like a HHN temporary Maze mated with Stitch. That's not a good combination for a permanent attraction.
