  • 13th October 1993. WC USA '94 Qualification match in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Barcelona's Ronald Koeman, aka Rambo, foul David Platt and show how you should do a professional foul, avoiding a penalty.
Ok, referee forgot the rules and punish him with only a yellow card.
Add insult to injury, Koeman scored with a freekick and eliminated England from USA 1994 World Cup

@@CornelisJoh That's because Gary Neville doesn't actually understand the IFAB laws. Technically, it was indeed a penalty, although refs often won't call a contact foul in the area that takes place after the shot has already been hit. theNetherlands got a penalty in the Wembley game to scrape a 2-2 draw in the same qualifying campaign which was a similar "was is or wasn't inside the box" decision but they got the pen!.....even after not sending off Koeman here and after England didn't get a pen England's free-kick was taken and the wall didn't allow anywhere near 10yards and was blocked but was NOT allowed to be re-taken....where as Koeman (who should've been sent off earlier) scored from a RETAKEN free-kick, why was it re-taken? because the ref allowed theNetherlands a re-take despite England allowing more yards than theNetherlands had earlier which wasn't allowed to be retaken.....No point in trying to justify it, it was bad officiating and also no point in Oscy saying England wouldn't have done anything at the WC. They got to the semi's the previous WC....Portugal Euro2016 finished bottom half of their group behind Hungary and Iceland and they went on to win the competition (albeit with a fluky route to the final which they didn't deserve having massively underachieved in that mediocre group) because if you're in it you can still win it and that WorldCup had the same format as Euro2016 did so pretty much any team who qualified had a big enough chance of having a good run in the competition and you never know maybe even better....I'm not saying it would've been a WC win but I don't like when people say "it wouldn't have happened" when you don't know. All we know for sure is this was bad officiating and that's all we're talking about really.

Fantastic post, dcvnhtrdf, it wasn't just that decision, the referee really did "get him the sack", as Graham said so at the time. Terrible decisions. And we were unlucky with the Des Walker last minute foul which was outside the box but the player dived into the box and fooled the ref, in a crucial game, which we should have won as well.
In this game it should have been the other way around England's free kick (which should have been a penalty), should have had to be retaken, and theirs was ok, I think. Ince got wrongfully booked.
If we go to another game as well I remember Rooney doing a similar thing in a game against Russia and it should have been a free kick, but the ref gave a penalty, it seems England don't get a lot of luck in crucial games.

It was other results like drawing in Poland and losing against Norway at Oslo as a well as drawing against them at Wembley which put paid to our qualification hopes. If those results didn't happen, it wouldn't have came to this. And people forget that Holland had a clearly onside goal disallowed. The referee was awful that night for both sides. I'm sorry but Holland were the better team who could simply make their own luck and more importantly keep possession with the ball while England as usual either gave it away or lumped it up-field.

In a way a blessing England didn't qualify for USA 94 as it was a farce of a world cup. I didn't care or give a damn about southern Ireland as they are nothing to do with us. No British representatives at USA 94 a shite world cup tournament. England bounced back and refreshed for euro 96. Since 1993 England have only failed to qualify for European championship 2008. Every other tournament we have been there.

    • @harrypalmer8808

Actually, it was. If England had beaten Holland in that match then they would have qualified.... and Holland would have stayed at home. Koeman knew this. This was the next to last match in the group to be played. England's next, and final match, was against San Marino. The score was 0-0 when Koeman fouled Platt. As Platt said himself, 1-0 up and playing against 10 men would have given England a commanding position. OK - it wasn't a penalty, but Koeman was the Dutch skipper and sweeper..... and their specialist free-kick taker. Remind me again how Holland scored their first goal.

I’ve just picked up on this clip via You Tube. I had The Privilege just short of 10 Years ago now of interviewing Graham Taylor for a series of films I was making about The Wolves In The 1950s. Mr Taylor used a tactical advisor at Watford called Wing Commander Charles Reep. Reep had advised Stan Cullis at The Wolves in the 50s.
I spoke to Graham Taylor numerous times on the phone after that over about 2 years or so.

It’s clear Platt dived there, he wanted to milk a penalty. Just go and see Lomu staying on his feet despite numerous defenders trying to fell him. Koeman merely touched Platt and no reason to fall.

What controversy? Should we only remember the seccond big mistake of the referee? Why?
Holland way before Koemans foul should have been 1-0 up. A perfect goal of Rijkaard was judged offside. As one can clearly see in the replay no less than 3 defenders where keeping Rijkaard onside! So if we talk about "should". Holland should have been 1-0 up and I would say Koeman would have never touched Platt! So strangely enough we only talk about the seccond big mistake of the referee. Go look at the footage Holland was 1-0 up that changes everything.

  • @harryf1ashman
    @harryf1ashman 17 днів тому +2

We should also remember that cheating Dutch captain taking out Paul Gasgoigne when England were were two up at Wembley. No red card either. Karma indeed through the penalty awarded against Holland was arguably technically correct.

  • @vhayes2257

Tons of stupidity and ignorance on this thread, to match that from prat Platt in the video. England did NOT need to win, they needed to avoid defeat. It was the Dutch who, effectively, had to win given that England had much the easier final match lined up, -v- San Marino. Had this Holland-England match ended in a draw, England would have qualified on goal difference. Yes, Koeman should have been sent off, yes he would not have scored that crucial first goal. But where you eliminate one injustice you must eliminate another: Holland still win 2-0 courtesy of Bergkamp and, wait for it, Frank Rijkaard who had had a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out for offside in the first half. Platt, you need a memory transplant.

This reminds me of the comments after the 2020 (2021) final, with claims that Chiellini should have received a red card (he didn't), whilst forgetting everything that happened in the previous match against Denmark.
If anyone wants to complain about the Netherlands (please stop calling it 'Holland'), complain about Nigel de Jong's karate kick in the World Cup final, or the Battle of Nuremberg against Portugal, or the most 2022 World Cup quarter final against Argentina.
