You gotta love how the owner is like "I thought she was stealing" but never went in or check anything out. You don't confront your employee or ask what's up? Or even then, call the police?
You know how many cars pull into gas stations for reasons other than purchasing anything? A hundred a day . Once he relealised it wasn't theft and noone coming in or out the rear door and the vehicle pulled away . .. what was he to think . Now if he saw that damn door come open ... then he would have acted.
@@russeldevries1642 he said in the video that the owner saw the car and thought she was stealing. Why not catch her in the act if she thought that. "Oh I'll just deal with it tomorrow"

It's not surprising that an owner who would have a single staff working alone at night (probably paying a pittance for a wage) without a camera, a panic button, any kind of protection, would be too selfish to think of anything but what a scene means to them personally.
Naaaahh she just assumed that she was robbing the place and didn't see a bunch of gas station stuff....other then THE EMPLOYEE!!....in the silver chomo van 🤔 so she just went on home! That manager is a serious piece of chit!!

I remember this case very well. It’s 20 minutes from where I live and his accomplice in this case Kevin blohm was a Sargent at Muskegon correctional facility.
Ivory Melmoth Amazing to me that once she was satisfied the station wasn’t being robbed she was happy to go on her way. She owned a business, had a duty of care to her employees but she didn’t check on Jessica. There weren’t any security measures to protect a person working alone at night.
@@tessforbes8687 quite apparently Jessica's Law, which would require businesses open during graveyard shift to have security cameras and/or have at least two employees working the shift. It has struggled to be passed because business owners are concerned about the cost of the surveillance equipment and having to pay an extra employee. Not concerned at all about the safety of their employees, even after this tragedy. Just their pockets.
At one job I had at the mall, our supervisor used to close by herself and she had a man who stalked her nearly every time. She asked our greedy dumbass boss if she could have another person close with her and of course they said no. The shop was right next to one of the main entrances and someone could easily rush in and try something.
If that 16 Year old girl hadn't had the guts to jump out of a moving vehicle, while having a gun trained on her there would still be two unresolved cases - saved her own life & solved two murders - what a remarkable girl. An unintentional heroine.
That woman who hung around to keep an eye on Jessica the night before is an angel. If only there were enough people like her to be around everywhere. Edit: Please watch the video carefully before commenting and confusing Jessica’s boss, who drove past on the *very night* of the crime and suspected theft, with the woman customer who had a bad feeling and watched Jessica close up shop the *night before* the night she was kidnapped.
didn't she just hang out cause she thought jessica was stealing? it's not like she was looking out for her. just was at the right place at the right time.
@@michaelspoto8720 if I understood right, it was the store manager checking on the van the day Jessica disappeared but there was a lady who stayed around to check on Jessica the day before she went missing.
The one casual customer showing more due diligence as to a missing employees well-being than the actual manager always sticks in my head from this case.
The manager lady was crying her eyes out when she testified at trial about not doing anything. She deserves to be haunted by what happened. More concerned about an employee stealing than about them potentially being attacked.
I personally think she’s partially responsible, for NOT being responsible enough that she just thought she might be stealing.. She went out of her way to check the back but didn’t care enough to go in and actually check whats going on. Idk how she could live with that, the fact that she could’ve saved a life at that time! Just imagine
That cheap owner needed to get some fucking security cameras if he was so worried! Letting a female work alone at night with no protection...hell, even a dude working there at night alone is susceptible to getting robbed.
It’s possible he would have murdered anyone who walked in on the abduction. He was stupid enough to leave things on his computer, I could see him shooting anyone who got in the way of abducting her. But I do agree. I don’t understand if you were that suspicious to not just check inside to make sure everything was fine.

@@martacosta2677 What are you talking about? Jessica was 26, he tried to kidnap a 16 year old. Literally what got him caught was a 16 year old jumping out of his moving van and calling for help.
I guess now she learned something that every kid with a brain knows... You don't take rides from strangers or even people that you know, without "others" knowing about that.
I blame the manager for her lack of action even after seeing a suspicious van pull at the back of the gas station and knowing very well that Jessica was the only person working at the station. How she didn't even bother to report the incident to police is beyond me!
I went to high school with Jessica. She was a sweetheart and a loving, caring person. She was trying so hard to get her life going in the direction she wanted. So many people were throwing wild speculation down on what happened and it really hurt to see that. She was super trusting and lived in a bad part of Muskegon and it was just a perfect storm of awful. I wasn't super duper close to her after high school, but we did talk on social media off and on and I still miss her. 💔 Edited for clarity
My 20 yr old (at the time) daughter used to work the night shift at a gas station. She was never supposed to be alone but people called in all the time and the manager would wait far too long to hire additional night clerks. She was alone often and I didn't sleep.
They should at least have someone else in the store with them. My grandfather worked at a 7-11 for 8 years in his late 50’s and early 60’s and was robbed at gunpoint multiple times. It usually happened when he was completely alone in the store with no one to help him.
Seymour Cox Did you let her know that you weren’t creeping on her? I suppose though, saying you weren’t creeping would just freak her out even more. Just curious how that encounter played out. I’ve said similar words before causing the employee working the register to feel uncomfortable. I was able to explain what I had meant; and while they seemed to be good with it, I have always wondered if I caused the person to have trust issues. Nothing but respect here though.
This is not the first time a young lady has been abducted from a lonely late shift. These shops should not be allowed to have someone working late on the solo.
I’d do it. In fact I do it. It’s not as common to be abducted and murdered as mike’s viewers think. Unemployment is a much larger risk in my world. But thanks for trying to protect me to death.
Certainly not without CCTV. Some of these stores I have been to late at night wisely lock the front door and you go up to the window and pay for your gasoline & ask for the quart of milk or whatever you need & the clerk gets it for you.

So weird that the owner was weirded out enough by the van that she went out of her way to follow/watch it when it went behind the gas station but then after it drove off she did the same without so much as even glancing inside the store or checking on Jessica… i mean jeez even if it was only to make sure she wasn’t stealing that would’ve been better than what she did - aka _nothing._ Like ngl but that kinda pisses me off…😾

Better case scenario, we have another pet for everyone to love. I think it's super cute how a lot of big dogs act like puppies.
Manager: "The van looked suspicious and I thought she was stealing, buy it drove away and I was like OK EVERYTHING IS FINE NOW" This woman obviously doesn't care about her employees, too cheap to add cameras and too lazy to check on what she claimed looked like suspicious activity. Maybe if she had popped in she would've noticed Jessica gone, called the police and possibly had this monster tracked down a lot sooner.
That's exactly what I thought imagine the outcome here if that employer actually checked on her employee. Ffs she was right there why didn't she go inside and check Jessica was ok and ask about the van out the back, closing, opening and then closing the boot again and driving off was still odd behaviour at the back door of the establishment.

I saw a really bad defense team in the Jonathan Nobles capital murder trial. The prosecution had him dead to rights, and the defense attorney's closing argument was, `can you imagine what was going through his head, as he was stabbing, stabbing, stabbing?!' He didn't do a bad job, but you could tell he knew he couldn't win, everything was mounted against his client, but he still tried. The interesting part was when it came to sentencing, so after the verdict was decided, suddenly he wasn't the defence anymore, he was just a lawyer (the articles of law needed to be applied correctly), and he and the prosecution both provided reference material which pushed the jail term up due to the quantity of drug involved. It must be so difficult trying to defend a position you know is wrong but he tried anyway and managed to make me double check everything during the jurors decision making.

But we still did, all 6 of us stayed every night till 02 and we all closed down the shop together. we weren't exactly at a populated area so none of us liked staying alone that late. One night we encountered a few drunk guys who thought that one of our coworkers was alone and tried to..... yeah. The rest of us was in the back when we heard her scream and rushed in while the guys rushed out when they saw us. Imagine if she was alone. we did have cctv and the guys where arrested. It sucks when guilty people proclaim their innocence. Just makes it harder for truly innocent people to be believed. It’s why no one believes people in prison, even if they’ve been wrongfully convicted.
Why didn't the owner of the store go inside and check on Jessica after seeing the van out back. That would have started the search minutes after the abduction and possibly saved her life. Of course not having security cameras at a convenience in 2013 is almost incomprehensible, so maybe incompetence was the goal.

This happened not far from our home. My heart goes out to Jessica's Family. What an awful tragedy. The gas station owners should be held accountable for not having ANY security measures in place to keep her safe, no CCTV cameras alone is just ridiculous. A pretty young girl working the late shift ALONE, no gun or means to protect herself. I hope her Family sues the owners in civil court. R.I.P Jessica and Rebekah rest now in the arms of the good Lord!
Yes, and the way the manager going by on her motorbije thought Jessica was robbing with an accomplice around the back of the petrol station. A lovely young girl on her own, no protection. The child is probably about 10 years now. Such a shame. And to have those video tapes with the two women's initials. Very sinister. The young one who escaped, that had been walking home. She would have ended up her initials on a file folder with photos of her dying self. Thank God that didn't happened 🙏
Then which laws did the owner actually break? I don't see any. Did he lack responsibilty and morality? I don't see how. I don't even see negligence. I just see a "damn it would have been reeeally good if..." type of situation. Don't get me wrong, YES, CCTV or a panic button, a handgun or whatever might have saved her (MIGHT), but where's the owner's actual mistake? Yes, you want justice, we all want that. So make the killer pay with his time, life and money, not the damn gas station for having a crime happen on their place. Otherwise you could also advertise for sueing the manager for not actually checking on her in person, sue the property owner for letting that happen on his land, Exxon for letting that happen in their store or for not having CCTV and shotguns in their contracts and stations, police for not patrolling there at that very time, Chevrolet for making a car that's usable in abductions, the killer's parents for producing a killer, like wtf.

Why aren't we hearing more from this person? What kind of manager suspects theft, sees a van go to the back door and then just leaves? Something smells pretty shi**y here.
Unfortunately, having worked in retail, you have to have proof before confronting someone about theft. She had no right to search the car and, if she had been stealing, the manager would have to check the inventory log vs sales that day vs spoiled/disposed of product.
Why act like this is hard to understand? It's not hard to understand. Most people want to avoid confrontation -- especially if it results in them getting hurt. The van means someone else is involved, probably a man. The woman manager didn't want to confront a man engaged in robbing her store because it could get her killed. If Jessica WAS involved in theft, manager could verify that the next day and call the cops with what she witnessed. You legally take care of it after the fact the safe way, instead of getting yourself killed by confronting some drug-addled thief (Jessica was a heroin addict, probably her accomplice would be involved in drugs too.). Not rocket science.

I recently watched the Lululemon episode and I could see why she wouldn't want to confront not only Jessica, but a large man loading a truck at 11PM. I can't understand why 1) she'd have a young woman working in a store at those hours alone, 2) having no cameras in the store, and 3) why she didn't call the cops when she suspected the gas station was being robbed in the first place. I can't say I fault her for not thinking she's superwoman and going to stop a crime in progress alone, though.
Wait, at the end he said Jessica was a heroin addict? Was that mentioned in the begining? Don't get me wrong, that scumbag had enough to be found guilty but there are a few things that go unanswered, and with no body found then how can they prove without a doubt he was 100% guilty? Just feels like we only got 98%.
This shit instantly bewildered me. You think your store is being robbed, so you watch, but you dont make a note of license plate? Call the cops? Check the store after the van drove off? She rolls up with a theory and then just decides "meh" and goes home. That manager is a douche bag
I worked at a self-serve gas station when I was young. In an area with no one around. No other businesses and very few homes. The only other employees were men. I got hit on lots, and had some weirdos come in. I also had the local PD check on me, and bring me coffee. One guy asked me out at least 20 times, and I kept telling him I had a boyfriend. That guy scared me. I later found out he lived just a few blocks from my home. I recognized his car when I drove past. This was 40 years ago, and times were different. Those places are dangerous for women. They should never be left alone on the evening shift. Ironically, the place was torn down and and another building is there. It's now a police station

I've just discovered Mike's videos and have been binging on them for two days now. Just a moment ago, I clicked on what I thought was the next video in the lineup and was thrust into a "True Crime" video. I've watched a video or two of theirs before which I thought were pretty good but now after watching Mike's videos, the narrator's voice and the cheesy dramatic music actually made me cringe. I immediately clicked out and clicked right on this video. To think, they spend so much money on their productions and they end up being trash compared to Mike's videos. Well, I just want to say, I love this channel. Back to binging.
Mary S - actually, it does us good to see that because it makes us more aware that someone who "looks good" could well be a murderer. We need to wake up to that
It works though or I should say the prison uniform works against defendants. Defendants are statistically more likely to be sentenced to prison and/or receive longer sentences when dressed in prison uniform while on trial.

Me too, I’m in West MI
no love for ugly girls?

Gas station manager could've saved Jessica's life if she just looked inside the store before she dipped
Thats my thoughts too! Also if you see a suspicious vehicle at your store why not call the police?
exactly - if you think it looks suspicious wouldn't you want to ensure the safety of your staff? She completely let Jessica down on this.
I thought it was pretty bogus that her first thought was that her employee was robbing her.
My friend from Iowa worked a job like that. She had to run to the automatic front door to manually close it multiple times to prevent clearly robbery/kidnappy types from getting in. Manager didn’t give two shits. Her grandma bought a new remote for the lock for her so she could close it from the till. Those rural places are messed up big time.
Franz Ferdinand I'm not saying she should have called the cops, but she should have gone inside just to make sure the employee she was so distrustful of (thought she was stealing) was present and doing her job. She's a pretty slack arse manager.

@@alfiona7951 it really was. I always drive by the gas station he picked that girl up at and it’s not surprising at all since at night it’s basically always empty, the other gas stations around here are so busy. Sad to think of how many deranged, dangerous people are out there. Good job with this, Mike.
So the manager of the station sees the van pull around back, suspects Jessica of stealing, pulls around to watch the van from her motorbike,,,,,,then just leaves? Why aren't we hearing more from this person? What kind of manager suspects theft, sees a van go to the back door and then just leaves? Something smells pretty shi**y here.
That so-called manager should be questioned if not interrogated
@@Big_Tex . the manager wouldnt of known about the drug use...well ya would of thought not. but the manager could of waited at a distance and then phoned the old bill. then maybe which ever crime being committed would/should of been foiled?? but its always easy to say what should or shouldnt of been done after the fact and everyone could act and do stuff differently in any given situation.
@@indianastones6032 Yeah that's my point, easy to be critical when you're not the one on the spot. Suppose these were violent thieves and they see you sitting there on your motorcycle staring at them all alone late at night. What do you think is going to happen? Getting the license plate -- maybe the manager doesn't have great eye sight and would need to get too close. Lot of people who watch too much TV have great ideas but if you're a woman all alone late at night near people who might kill you, it will likely make you a bit cautious.

So u thought she was stealing and see a van loading stuff up and drive off and you don’t confront your employee?
I think the boss saw what was going on. Needed a story as her cell probably put her there. However she decided to hi tail it home and not get involved.
