- This award-winning photographer's talk reflects on her pain, and the beauty that eventually emerged from it. The misdiagnosis of her ovarian cyst illuminated the medical industry’s role in normalizing the neglect, gaslighting, and mistreatment of black women’s healthcare and bodies-and the role art plays in helping people heal. A set of evocative and beautifully composed photographs form a body of work which illustrates the speakers trauma, -but Eva strikingly illuminates that all of us should move to demand the stories of black artists that celebrate life, sexuality and culture and do not only focus only on the trauma of the black community. Eva Woolridge, a photographer, explores the sexual, spiritual, and emotional nature of femininity, using lighting and composition to convey strength, perseverance, vulnerability, and vitality, transcending surface-level labels of people of color. Her photographic essays include “Peeled Paint” (2014), conveying her understanding of ego and spirituality, and “Embrace Your Essence” (2015), a series focused on young women's journeys toward self-love -defining what they find beautiful about themselves. Many of the narratives included illnesses, challenges to meet Western standards of beauty, and quirks that once negatively affected their self-esteem.
Eva continues to use visual narratives to convey a tone of a new, inclusive wave of feminine energy through her gaze as a queer, woman of color, while commenting on the social & cultural conditions of her communities. Raised in MAPSO, she attended Columbia High School, and graduated from the University of Maryland-College Park in 2015. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
The body does indeed keep score as related to trauma, and we must continually work on this. Art is the perfect medium. Thank You!
Everything you said resonates with me! I have moved past my trauma with my reproductive system. I found resolve by understanding they gave me beautiful children and i could no longer live with the pain they caused!! Watching you speak on this gave me that clarity to say that! Thank you!!

i love her.
Thx you
I do art every single day!!!
I am trying to do an abstract piece tonight to help me with PTSD recovery. I'm feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to start.
I hope you were able to find inspiration. What helped me was identifying the different emotions that presented themselves during the different stages of my trauma. Putting a face to the feeling. I then try to explore a subject/pose/ movement that best represents those feelings
I don't think it's just women that don't make a scene... that sounds more like men.
