How to Fix Tinnitus (Ears Ringing) and TMJ (Jaw Pain)!! 😱

  • Why are my ears ringing? 👂
    Why does my jaw hurt? 😧
    Why won't these headaches stop?😰
    What if I told you they all had the same cause? All of these things can be linked to adhesion in your jaw muscles!
    As Dr. Joe explains in the video, Tinnitus (ringing of the ears), is directly related to the TMJ pain, because of how close the TMJ is to the ear.
    In the video itself, you will also see a patient of ours, Jay Taylor who dealt with a very similar issue. Jay's video ( • Jay Finally Gets Relie... )
    The issue itself didn't cause him too much pain, but Jay was tired of dealing with the non-stop discomfort that he felt every single day and wanted a real solution.

    My TMJ symptoms started in November 2020, one day my entire jaw was in pain, I could not get it to relax. It was probably due to bad posture sitting all day on zoom classes. And besides that was having tight neck and neck pain. And also when I lay down to sleep my lower back and hips hurt. When waking up my traps and neck feel really tight. That same year in November 2020, my ears began to have fullness, fleeting tinnitus, and regular eeeee ringing. Eventually I went to a dentist to check out my jaw and it was determined that I clench at night. Tight jaw muscles. I was given a mouth guard, it helped it bit. The ear fullness went away (thank god) , fleeting tinnitus was reduced, but after a year I still have some jaw popping, a bit of earing ringing, jaw joint pain when I lean over on my right side( Where the ringing is most at) and I still have tight neck muscles and hips(lower back) when I wake up.

    I have had tinnitus so long I don't even know when it started but thinking it may be related to dental work. Over 5 years ago I had tons of dental work done including 2 implant procedures all of which required me to have my mouth open for hours at a time. After both surgeries, I had clicking in my left jaw, or TMJD. Ironically, it's only on my left side which is the side I had a bone graft done prior to one of my implant surgeries. I have gone to different doctors, dentists and an ENT doctor and got zero resolution for my issue. Even chiropractic hasn't been able to help me (and I'm married to a chiropractor!!) It's frustrating to spend so much money and time to never get a resolution. I'm in Michigan and I need help!

    Hi, I have been suffering with tinnitus for a month and this is the first video I can relate with. I hope you can give me your opinion on to the extent to which my tinnitus might be jaw/adhesion related.
    My right ear started ringing at the end of a very mentally stressful week and coincidentally with a dinner when I remember stressing out my right jaw due to chewing hard food. My jaw has been lightly “clicking” every time I fully open it for years (but with no pain unless stressed out with chewing), and my dentist found evidence of night-clenching (although not severe).
    Left ear has no tinnitus nor jaw clicking/pain. ENT doctor found no signs of hearing loss after a test on both ears.
    After a month of living with it, I find that my right ear ringing changes its intensity in two situations:
    (1) there are positions of my jaw where the intensity reduces or increases, for example when I yawn it increases but if I move my jaw fully to the left it reduces;
    (2) meditation or focused reading in silent environments (eg at night or with ear plugs) helps me lower the intensity of the tinnitus to almost zero. The intensity goes back up immediately as soon as I hear a noise or do a quick movement.
    I am based in the UK and therefore unable to come for a physical diagnosis, but based on the context above, what would you recommend?
    Thank you for this helpful resource!

      TY for kind words. It sounds like a combo of 1) Stress 2) TMJ issue with possible adhesion. Maybe try a myofascial therapist for jaw pain and continue working on stress? You need to do latter so you stop overusing jaw muscles.

    Hello, thanks for the informative video. I have tinnitus for around 4 years now. It started due to some stressful work and travel routine. I also had some muscle pain in neck and chest. They went away with time but tinnitus didn't. I have been to ENt doctors few times, he didn't see any issues. I went to my dentist, he told me nothing can be done about it. Its normal for some people, so I tried to ignore it and in day time I don't have much issues. Only in the night, when it's silent, it bothers me. Although I can hear a very faint noise as well even with this problem. When I try to move my jaw it does make cracking sounds and sometimes I feel my ears have opened/relaxed after jaw movement. But I have no pain at all. Do you think this is also somatic tinnitus? I live in Germany, thus cannot visit your clinic. Thank you!

      @gb4939 2 роки тому

      @@drchrisstepien Yeah I studied fascia tissue and I work with it for years in my professionnal field. Looks like it's just a different lexicon. In France, we talk about "adhérences" to designate areas of the fascia tissue that is in an unhealthy condition (with indeed, a phenomenon of sticking, glue..). "Adherences" in French can also refer to "trigger points". So what you call "adhesions" looks like very similar to "adhérences" in the way you described it. Ok thank you for your answer :)

      @@gb4939 Wow that's awesome. I'll differ by saying that we differentiate "Adhesions" from "Trigger points." When we feel a trigger point, we deliberately avoid them as secondary problems. But we treat adhesion which are primary problems and lead to permanent relief. Make sense?

      @gb4939 2 роки тому

      @@drchrisstepien ha ha ok it becomes more subtle and more technical :-) But yes I think I understand your point and I also make the distinction between trigger points and adhesions, in the sense that, the adhesion is a preliminary step to the appearance of trigger points. In France too (depending on the therapist / professional), we make a difference between adhesion and trigger points. Anecdote : from what I've learned, there are even 3 degrees of trigger points. This is fascinating and I think we have a lot of things to discover on this topic :-)

I have discovered I have calcified stylohyoid ligaments bilaterally and am being assessed for Eagle syndrome and Hyoid bone syndrome. Different head positions cause my dizziness so I am keeping track and am careful to avoid triggering positions. I believe it is caused by hypermobility and an undiagnosed connective tissue disorder.. Still have a long way to go but I am cautiously optimistic :) I am going to start physiotherapy for neck muscles to help with my hypermobile neck and try SCM and masseter releases. I also believe the tooth extractions caused me to start clenching my teeth (bruxism) at night and this is all somehow connected, because I find that sleeping with an extra pillow under my jaw made my pain go away 90%. Mine is the same, (had it for 27 years, since I was 13) the loudness of my tinnitus varies greatly if I clench my jaw. I’ve been through hell this week, I had an ear infection suddenly and my right ear was muffled and not long after tinnitus got way louder. I honestly though my life was finished… I could not live like this, I could not sleep at all and no escape from tinnitus. I think it may have subsided a little bit but I’m now hopeful after reading some of the literature that my condition is possibly treatable. I was worried it was in the brain and there’s no cure but since it’s I can directly effect if with movements of my jaw then doesn’t that suggest it’s in my body somewhere pressing against nerves??

CHronic stress can also contribute to this, it may be helpful to start meditating or working on mindfulness.

    Doctor, from last december I am suffering from ringing and pain in my both ears, jaw pain, and it all started with a flew and cold, severe ringing and pain in the ears, back of the head, forehead and eye pain. My ENT Specialist conformed that there is no ear wax in both my ears and that my hearing is also ok. I had virtigo initially. I did a head MRI Scan and it's also normal. I hear a popping sound of my jaw when I open my mouth, and my jaws always hurt, specially when I wake up after sleep and after having meals. What is my problem, who should I meet, what should I do? 😕 I really appreciate if you can help me!!! 😕😊❤️

      It sounds possible, especially if tight. If you clench, grind, or have overall stress this is another sign. Couold also just be the crown directly.

    Hello! My TMJ symptoms started late 2021 after a very stressful period last year. Last February tinnitus symptoms also started in my right ear, and also Hyperacusis. After that I almost ended up in a burnout due to the stress caused by the tinnitus. After several visits to an ENT doctor, who found no hearing loss, I was told that there is nothing wrong with my ears. So I have since found out that this has everything to do with my TMJ. My right jaw snaps and my teeth don't fit together well either. I am now under the treatment of a jaw physiotherapist. After my first visit yesterday he gave me exercises to start with.
    However, I notice that my tinnitus has become more intense after these exercises. Is this a normal phenomenon as it is my first time doing these exercises (massage my jaw en head)? And will that improve in a later stage of my exercises?
