It’s a shame the incredible standards of the final four were overshadowed by the worst one from the prelims. I’m slightly embarrassed to be an Aussie, then I look at our ranking.
Break dancing definitely belongs in the olympics, it is extremely physically demanding and requires elite levels of Athleticism. Most people will not be able to do break dance like this.
Lots of things in the world are extremely physically demanding and require great athleticism, that doesn’t mean they are a sport and it definitely doesn’t mean that it is an Olympic sport. We need to be more selective and exclusive otherwise the olympics will lose their value. 99% of the general population is laughing at break dancing in the Olympics. This Olympics has lost value already because of this. That’s just a fact.
You can argue the same about synchronised swimming, ice dance, the entire group of rythmic gymnastics, and there are probably more Olympic disciplines that have music and choreography involved. You are incredibly ignorant to say Breaking is just a dance and not a sport. Bboys and Bgirs that compete at the highest levels need to train their bodies and minds just as much as other Olympic athletes. Unlike most other types of dances, with breaking you can much more objectively measure the skill of individuals, not just the artistic impression of their performance. But even then so many sports also have "artistic impression" as part of their scoring system. I could argue that most sports are also a form of art. So why make the distinction? I don't see any other athletes complaining that "dance" is included in the Olympics.
Remember that sport is just organised play. Every sport at the Olympics has alternate variations that have not been chosen by the IOC and included. Break dancing or dancing dancing generally is no different.
I don't have a problem with all these additions and artistic sports but it's the fact that the olympics considers these "sports" but an actual athletic sport like netball, with a world cup, quality players and performers with so many countries having national teams already, both african and asian, and even island countries is not even considered. They'd really rather go with breaking there is a wonderful asian sport as well. Can't remember the name but the setup is kinda like volleyball except 3 players are on court and the play with their feet. It takes so much skill and I genuinely enjoy and respect the sport. There are so many great sports that should have been considered before this.
It's a shame that breaking won't be in the next Olympics. Breaking is an extremely difficult sport that requires insane physical ability and creativity. Gymnastics you get to practice your routine and set it to the music you are playing. But breaking you need to improvise on the spot, connecting all your moves so that it suits the music playing at the time while reacting to your opponent's previous sets!
One day, dancing will actually be considered a sport. That day is when ballet is added. It wouldn't be hard to do it either, it'd be a series of crazy pirouettes, flexibility, stamina, etc. The ballerinas out there are pure athleticism, puts most other sports to honest shame.
@SuperBozz huh, thanks for letting me know. I just think that there’s a missed opportunity in ballet, especially where there’s these dancers who don’t fit the usual professional standard, but are exceptional athletes. Eg. People who have amazing technique but aren’t ’skinny enough’ to be accepted by the ballet community . Etc. There’s just a huge gap in the dance community where talent should be accepted over genetics and appearance. Misty Copeland for example.
