Solar Edge Inverter? 3g modem? Upgrade for less than $25

- I needed to "replace" my 3g modem as AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, & Verizon are all turning off their 3g networks. The option that was being pushed was a $500 install for a new cellular modem. No thanks. What other options are there?
Replace with an Ethernet cable for less than $25. I go through the process I went through in order to get this done.

Great video. For my setup, i removed the power, LEFT THE 3GCELL ANTENNE CRAP INSTALLED. opened the panel, and ran a cat 6 wire to rear of router hub. Turned power bsck to unit, and it immediately refreshed itself and started working as before. Didnt hsve to log into anything or call swindleredge for assistsnce. I believe THE KEY WITH THIS IS TO LEAVE THE 3GE CRAP IN PLACE AND REMOVING THE POWER. THEN SIMPLY ADDING THE CAT6 CORD WITHOUT REMOVING THE 3G CRAP. ATlesst thats how it worked for mine. Thanks for your video!!!

This video helped out & my system just auto connected to Ethernet. Back in production on the app & I've confirmed with my monitoring company. I couldn't get the cable through that DC slot/grommet so I kinda had to mutilate the box and make a small spot for it

Good video, T-Mobile shut mines off 5/31 at 11:47 pm...had no previous notice....good thing is my internet provider box in the garage is on the inside of the wall opposite of the inverter...I'll give it a go 👍🏿
Mine shut off June 1st No notice 🤬 longtime on phone then installer can come out July 22nd 🤬
To be perfectly fair, solar edge sent out an email to everyone affected in January. But yes, lots of deadbeat installers. Mine was still in business but refused to do anything. The closest installer performing servicing of existing systems in my area was 2 hours away. Had to fix everything myself. I only waited this late because my installer lied to me in January and told me to await further communication so I naively assumed they were on top of things.

Great video. I would have put the Ethernet cable in conduit since most of the shelf cabless are not rated for outdoors and will probably degrade with sunlight uv light. I installed Ethernet to my inverter the week after the installers left and sold my cellular connector. One added benefit to Ethernet is the uploads are much more frequent than cellular. On the new Energy Hub inverters the innards are so crammed it was a bit to get the wire to the upper box Lastly it's not critical but I used shielded Ethernet since there are serious power running into the inverter
Mine is rated for underground usage. Doesn't make it very flexible but makes it strong.
How did you tell the Inverter to communicate via Ethernet Instead?
Mine started with shielded ethernet originally. I advise that you get some lightning arrestors on both ends, and a cheap Ethernet switch between that outdoor cable and the router, another before the inverter. My system has had 3 comm cards replaced from lightning hits in 7 years. I've added filter the first time, switches the second time, then arrestors this time. Fingers crossed for future. The last storm took out 3 ethernet switches, a router and the solar edge comm card.

dont know if it'S the same thing, but im using a gateway. solaredge first sent the sim card thinggy but was able to get them to send out a gateway when my inverter was replaced due to the old one having the cover screw seized. my new inverter looks like yours.
I was just wondering why you had to leave the 3-g modem and I left mine in when I put my ethernet in but I removed my antenna my monitoring works but my inverter had quit producing power a week earlier still waiting for a ticket from my installer to get it warrantied out

Good video but I need set app to set it up problem is after the installer left and has gone and can’t find them but someone has control well when they went and disappeared I can’t get nothing now it’s dead they are not around now so how can I get them to give me access to the setup app? This is an array a large array and I’m trying not to let someone cause havoc for me got to many hackers in my neighborhood
Can you share the instructions how to get the app to default to ethernet? We just bought our home with solar already installed and are now faced with this issue. I know my way around a computer and peripheral devices. I just need to know what instructions were given to you by Solar Edge. I've been on hold with them most of the day today and can't get ahold of a live body.
How do you program your system when commissioned for the first time since it does not have a led indicator on the inverter? Please let me know. Thanks.

Thank for the great instructions- installation of the Ethernet cable / system went nice and easy. Now the only problem is SolarEdge will not update my inverter unless I hire a rep for the installation of the Ethernet cable - Any suggestions where I can get the software my self to update the inverter To allow it to switch over to the ethernet system rather than the 3G card. @imolazhp11 is just creating an account that took like 5 mins to do. Then I plugged in a cheap repeater to it, and it worked. With the Set App, you can enable ethernet and push updates.
I am an Electrician apprentice, and our company just got a contract to replace hundreds of solar inverter 3G modems and Antennas, with LTE ones, the customers aren't paying a dime for it!
And it only takes 10 minutes to do it, super easy.

I installed the Ethernet but I am also having that issue. I can’t get it to switch over. I have called SolarEdge and now they are only communicating via cellular. I downloaded the SolarEdge Setup app. But it won’t allow me to log in. Can you help?

I know that many listeners are thinking...what a long sad story...but I too had the same problems with Solaredge...their customer service department is in a distant English speaking country that simply follows a script to help resolve your problems. I began calling them 06/08/22 and as of today 08/03/22 still am not connected. They are a huge company, and have not dedicated enough to customer support. I could go on longer with more complaints...but if you are DIY - don't use Solaredge...they will make you crazy for sure.

I put it back in to do the upgrade since I made the change prior to 3g being shutoff. Not sure if the upgrade was necessary to make the change to Ethernet.
How has that inverter been for you? I'm thinking about expanding.

So once updated it through the set app it automatically connected to the new modem? I tried replacing an old modem today and it was still stuck on cellular and did not switch over. I thought Ethernet meant you’re connecting the to LAN?
In my case, I needed to gain access to SetApp in order to change my connection from cellular modem to Ethernet.

The screenless inverter is WIFI capable (since I connect to it from my phone over wifi).
So, it ought to be able to connect directly to my home WIFI, no ? If so, do I need some additional hardware (like zigbee plugin) ?

You would think that, right? But no. Yes, you need something to work with ZigBee. Since I didn't go that direction, I don't have the details. Sorry.
I watched this video hoping to see what settings in the app need to be changed. Didn’t really need to see how to run a cat5 cable
Sorry to disappoint. That was the challenging part for me. The app part was the easy part once I gained access which is why I glossed over it. There are limited settings in SetApp so is easy to find.
Kinda confused; do we still have to use the SetApp to update the system to Ethernet. What options do we have if SolarEdge refuses to let us have access to the setapp? This is some great information btw.
Yeah, you didn't get a rep that was cooperative. A couple of suggestions... try and contact them on Twitter asking them how you can gain access to the ethernet via SetApp. Stress the cable is already installed and just need to change the setting in order to use it. Also, you could try and call back saying the same thing hoping to get a more sympathetic ear. Also, ask for a supervisor without belittling the person. "I understand you don't have the ability to make this happen. Please transfer me to a supervisor." Don't let them tell you that they can't transfer because that is a lie. Hope that helps.

I was able to create my own account on the Setapp following some of the comments on your page and was successful in changing the communication to Ethernet. This is some really good information. @@davidprice96Look for the comment with like 9 or 10+ replies. One of those will help point you in the right direction. Basically, create a SetApp account using a 'fake' EIN number. Don't use your real SolarEdge information when you come across that segment, in fact you should be able to bypass that part. Made up my own 'Business Name" etc. and walla, my SetApp verified via email and created. Change settings to Ethernet port, connect your cable and done. You may need to restart your SolarEdge system after you've changed the Ethernet settings a couple times. I had to do it twice for the changes to update. Yes, it's a straightforward app. GL
I don’t understand what the fix was? Call SolarEdge and get them to send you a Login? The Ethernet hook up is self explanatory, not so much for someone experiencing the same issue of the inverter not using the Ethernet
Max Voltage, I have SolarEdge too installed late 2019 mine cut off June 1st just blinking green lite tried the reboot etc. made ticket with SolarEdge and longtime on phone with pink energy the installer and they can maybe come out the end of July 🤬🤬 looks like something I can do but do you think it will update without the problem you had now?

Question, why did you have to reinstall the 3g chip?
I had to reinstall because I needed to update the software before I could change the default to Ethernet, according to the person I spoke to at solar edge. The only way to download the update was via 3g cellular modern
That sounds like bs. If 3g is already shut down, no OTA update is coming over it. Setapp downloads the inverter firmware and installs it when you connect to the inverter. It does that over wifi. Though maybe the wifi and 3g radio are in the same module? Idk.

Can this still be done if 3G has been shut off for my system? without any communication im not sure how the update can be downloaded.

@@MaxVoltageMiningCrypto Solaredge will not take any calls regarding this (probably overwhelmed) and advising to contact installer directly. Installer is quoting 300USD to do this. From your video it seems like all they will be doing is plugging in Ethernet... But without access to the setup app like you did, not sure how I will be able to switch from cellular to LAN.
@@MaxVoltageMiningCrypto Another update. Solaredge WILL NOT give temporary access to the SetApp so you are very lucky. Think I will have to pay for an installer to make change for me :/
You can get access to the setapp app by creating an installer account from the link in the app. Just use a different email and don't try to enter your inverter serial number. The account setup is all automatic. Once you confirm your email and login to the setapp, you should be able to use it to connect to and reconfigure your inverter

I set up an installer account . But when I go to enter my serial number, it says it is invalid. i did enter just the last 10 digits/characters as it showed how to do in the info button. Any idea what I am doing wrong? thanks, Ken
Is there a reason you can't scan the qr code? That is what I use. Are you putting a dash between the 8th and 9th character?
And thank you for the question. Without it, I wouldn't have discovered that one of my power optimizers was down. Firmware update and reboot solved the issue for now. I now know to keep an eye on this.

computer. I am not able to use it on my Iphone as everytime I click on the Solaredge Icon it goes to my user account.

@@kenhanula6007 only thing I can think of is to set up an account from the phone. I am lucky in that I am on an account that solar edge set up for me. You could try calling solar edge and don't take no for an answer. Good luck.

Max voltage, I did Ethernet and made fake account for set up I was able to default inverter to ethernet with solid blue light communications fine but green light still blinking and not charging, any ideas?
How did you do the fake account? Only option in the setapp app is log in or forgot password
You need to pair the optimizers or one or more optimizers are broken. You need the set app, which you will never get credentials for.
Solar Edge will not help you. This guy was lucky, but voided his warranty. My installer went out of business, and I have 15k$ of silicon just sitting on my roof.

Would going to commission as opposed to view only have any affect on current programing from the installer as well as notifying them of my acess i dont want to alert them to my ability to controll the system and affect my warranty from the installer
This is a big security issue four your home internet. If you are gone for a period of time a person could open up your inverter and plug the ethernet cable into a laptop and then own your network after they get that access.
I guess that is a risk I am willing to take.
You'll know youce been compromised since MySolaredge app will report no data. And then you can go the side of your house and bring the perpetrator a coffee and ask if they want a scones with the free internet. I agree it is a risk but wifi can be hacked too. Just watch some hak5 videos here.
So I did the same and sent an email showing that I have internet connectivity. I just got an email from Solaredge stating they would need to send out a technician which would be $125 and it was something the homeowner is not able to do! Any advice?
My suggestion would be to call SolarEdge or your installer and see if they will give you temporary access to the install app (SetApp). You will have to ask for a supervisor and maybe even one level up. Good luck. Keep trying. Don't let them milk $125 from you.

I was able to create an installer account by following the link in the setapp app. I just used a different email tham my monitoring account. The other thing you have to do is avoid attempting to link the account to your inverter. You just need an account to use setapp. Once you have the account, you can login to setapp and use it to reconfigure your inverter
@@danielcranford3650 Hi Daniel, unfortunately when I try to create a username and password, it also requires the serial number of an inverter. I don't know how you got around that.

Hello my friend. I suspected all along that this was possible. I was in the information Technology Systems for 10yrs in the USAF. I've been a technician all my life. Anyway, my installer was one of those fly by night operations, they were actually a siding company. They decided one day to rename their comp with the Solar word in it to try to get a piece of the action, so to speak. It was a nightmare. But, I think they got caught. They claimed Bankruptcy and disappeared, all unbeknownst to me.
My system went down Dec 28th, 2022. It has taken me two months now to find out what was even wrong with it. I noticed my
invertor is about 50 yards away from my house modem. I would like to run an ethernet cable to it like you did. I might put it in
a pvc pipe and bury it. But, what I would like to ask you is what else would I need to buy or get ready or what else would I have
to go through to get it up and running. How big are the hoops I gotta jump through. I'm sure I'm going to be told to buy the 500
dollar modem. Heck my inverter is in my WiFi range too! Thanks for this video, it just confirmed my suspicions. I subscribed and thumbs up which I never do...
Thanks for the comment. I would call solar edge and see what they could do to help. I was lucky in that my modem still worked when I changed to Ethernet so that I was still able to upgrade the inverter before changing to Ethernet.
How can u get into the set app app it only lets me view
Others here have said to create a new account with a different email address than your main account. The other option is to call solar edge and see if you can convince them to give you an installer account. That is what I did.
I did this method with in 15 min I was done.
An update was done with the setapp, just wait 8 min to update. Then once it done go on monitoring Function change the connection from cellular to Ethernet and change. The go to my solar app let it load then it will take a min for it show

Can someone please help me I installed the ethernet on my HD Wave Inverter but cannot get the app to recognize the connection can someone please walk me thru it. I tryed several times. I do not have access to the setup app, only mysolaredge app and it will not change the wifi connection. I took out the wifi board in the machine to see if that made a difference still can not access ethernect connection. I have 2 inverters and the one with the screen i was able to connect LAN fine. But HD Wave has to be done via app and no success. HELP!
Sorry to hear you are having issues switching to your Ethernet connection. Yeah, getting it changed in the set app is a much bigger challenge than running and installing the cable and it shouldn't be. Do you have set app account? That is what you need. Once you have that, it should be relatively easy, but if you uninstalled the WiFi from the inverter, you will need to reinstall it otherwise there is no way to communicate with your phone and the set app.
I just re install the old wifi modem card back and tried to create a fake account on "SetApp" keeping getting error msg "Invalid serial #" i entered it several times the last 7 digits of my serial number . I need help. If i just can create the acct maybe I can move forward.
@@evelynbravo-sanchez1920 the only thing I can suggest is what I did which is call solar edge and state what you are trying to do. They will tell you "we won't help you install Ethernet." Be nice but insistent the Ethernet cable is already installed and you need a temporary login to the set app. I had to ask for a supervisor. You may have to ask more than once.

@@Ortega_Beams of course i did all that and it would give me error msg 'invalid code' called SolarEdge they told me that only installers could access the app i begged and nothing.
Sooooo I had to get the installer paid him to get access. I hate SolarEdge for this reason after spending money i had to spend more to have some use their app
I did the work installing the cable and hooking it all up.
I called Sigoura Solar, my installer today and they said that opening the inverter box to install the ethernet will void my entire warranty on the system. I feel they should pay for and perform the upgrade on my 3 year old system. They aren't buying it......
That is a bunch of BS. Sorry to hear your installer is treating you that way. I have a documented ticket with solar edge and an email with instructions from the installer. I am covered. No effect to my warranty. Now, if I didn't install it properly like leaving out the grommet so bugs and moisture could get in, that would be a different story.
I agree BS. The manufacturer warranty is independent of the installers own warranty. Now if you don't shut the inverter down properly and somehow short the system then that's on you and you'll have to pay to replace.
Just use the Solar Edge Gateway to connect to your inverter.
Can you provide a link to the product? I am not familiar with it.
