  • BMW R1250GS comes with more engine grunt and refinement than ever. But is it enough to overshadow the R1200GS? Is it enough to make you sell your “old” R1200GS for a half of the new one’s price? Let’s find out.

      @Mauro Fernandes i own both in family, and I don't see to much difference in power, the 1200 is a beast too.
      On my 2018 I refused to install the tft screen, because I believe it's more reliable the analogical one. (I also prefer the analogue gauges)

    Nice video and awesome locations! You both always enjoy your rides. There's only one thing I'd like to point out. A fair comparison would have been between a 2018 GS Adventure Rallye and the brand new 1250 GS. Just one question: Who's lending the BMW GS 1250 for the test? Cause in some ways it doesn't look like a totally impartial opinion, still a good comparison! All the Best from Argentina!

    Should be comparing the 1250 to a 2017 or 2018 as there were changes from 2015. The 2017 was considerably more refined and smoother. I'm speaking about the engine vibration as well as the quick shift...

    I'm probably just getting old, but I prefer the traditional gauges over the TFT. As for the 1250 being that much better than the 1200, I'd have to experience both before having an opinion. Both bikes are probably much more capable than my skill level and I'm sure I would enjoy both fairly equally.

    Thanks a bunch for your reviews. I just got mine, it is the first HP that just arrived the other day in Seattle. We are always a couple of months behind Europe in terms of parts availability. My question for you is if the Akrapovic HP pipe (the more oval-shaped one that appears in pics and videos all over the internet) is available for order in Romania. If it is, I may have to ask my brother back there to buy it and ship it to me but he wouldn't know what to look for, which is why I am asking you the question. Any info would be much appreciated.

    When the water cooled 1200 was introduced to the market in 2013, it was hailed by many people as the best big bore ADV bike you could buy - almost like a two wheeled deity. People put their hands very deep into their pockets to fish out the considerable amounts of cash to buy into this 'ultimate motorcycle narrative'. And then a new 'ultimate narrative' comes out! Having said that, the 1200 does retain its value exceptionally well.

I don’t do a lot of off-road riding, but I know Transylvania’ has some great mountain areas that are just great for camping/hiking. I do like this new 1250 with the increased power/torque. It will also give me the option of off-road riding and a little bit more comfort on the road. I’m planning on doing 6 months on Scandinavia and East/West Europe. I think the XR might be a little too small? Maybe !!

  • @rodrigoafonso1995
    @rodrigoafonso1995 5 років тому +1

    Very nice review! Everyone talks about how wonderful the bmw gs is for small people with the lower seat but you pointed out something very interesting. How about the talI people? I am 1.90m and was wondering if that bike would have good ergos for me. Do i need to do all those mods? Rise the handlebar, how about the legs? If i use the seat in a taller setup will it ruin the windshield protection and have to replace it also? Are the legs to cramped? Is the gsa the bmw answer for tall people? But the size, weight and looks will kill it for me.. does the ktm 1290 SAS or the ducati MS 1260 have better ergonomics for tall people? And how do you compare the bmw's 135hp to the 160 of the other two?

    • @DriveMagRiders
      @DriveMagRiders  5 років тому +2

      Hello. First of all thanks for watching. I think that having the original seat on the high set-up would work for your height. The risk is having not enough legroom - if that happens, you should go for the high seat. The thing with the windshields is that some aftermarket choices will give you wind buffeting - that's worse than the wind. Frankly, I don't have an answer to all your questions but my colleague, who's about 1,82 or something feels good on the GS in the standard set-up. As for those 135 hp compared to 160 - we'll do a comparison review soon. Still, I think the GS will match the KTM due to the great spread of torque.

    If you have the old one and can live with the terrible idle sound and gearbox clunking, stick with your bike. The new one is just a new TFT screen, a few colours and an even higher new price. The new one feels just the same to me (if a bit quiter on the exhaust sound), chassis is very good, but the 1200gs' was too. You'd be hard pressed to really feel the power/torque difference and I think i'd have to ride them back to back to feel any significant change. I do agree with the conclusion that the new one is an overall much more refined bike, but when you look at what you actually feel as a rider, it's certainly not day and night and the price differences between a low mileage 1200 and a new (full op, because how else would you have it?) are huge

    The gs is great no matter what model or year you have. It’s a 5 star machine compared to other bikes. I had an early model as well after the 1150 and it was a joy.

    An interesting review however it is fatally flawed when you say things like "it is much more refined than the old model" You were comparing the brand new GS1250 with a worn, 3yr old bike with 65,000km on the clock. Come on guys you should have done this properly by comparing the 1250 with a 2018 1200GS Rallye. The comments about the suspension and gearbox are moot because you were not comparing the last version of the 1200 ( a 2017/2018 which has a better gear box, a quick shifter and hill start assist etc, etc...............

      We didn't have a 2018 for a comparison but maybe we'll do it again with that bike. And there's one more thing. Why would you sell your recently bought 10.000 km 2018 motorcycle to get this new one? Thanks for your feedback, it's highly appreciated. Cristian

      The gearbox on the 2017/2018, even though smoother than the one on the old bike in this video, is still really clunky, especially when shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd.

      A 4 year old ford focus has probably lost 75% of it's value may as well just give it away than trade it in.

    The problem is that BMW could never figure out the oil bath issue in supplying enough oil to certain components, especially the clutch which would allow the springs on plate to overheat causing springs to compress to an extent causing chatter.. Brembo is still making the breaks for this bike, BMW just wanted their name stamped on the front caliper. If you are going to get one, get it new as they get costly in repairs as they age.

    But too expensive for very long rides. I travel about 30 thousand. km / year - this motorcycle would eat me a lot of service costs.

    I have a 2018 BMW Rallye Adventure TE
    The new 1250 has the shiftcam, thats it, everything else is the same. And the shiftcam is purely for EU5 Regulations. Thats it.
    A great BMW marketing campaign.
    Id not be buying a 1250, as the shifcam is very subtle, If noticeable at all.

      Nigel Collinson You can rest assured that you have made the right choice for your GS 2018 and I understand them, but the engine of the GS 1250 is clearly more flexible, more torque, but also more fun and easy to drive on the road and on the road. Off road ! it is not just marketing but a real improvement! I sympathize with your frustration! 😉✌🏽

      Nigel Collinson Yes I agree with your opinion but in my opinion, it lacked a bit of torque and power, what can be felt when for example a passenger behind + luggage, this new engine brings! You know, everyone has a different type of riding and use! And I teased you a little, nothing serious and even less wicked! All GS are a good choice, mm the R80gs! Me I ride with my old, brave and faithful R1200GS of 2008 new schemas and which is today still in a near new state in its new matt military green color with the complete exhaust line Akrapovic Racing with the double exhaust silencer , and I'm happy, even if I admit that the R1250 engine takes another step in the GS, which does not mean that 2017, 2018 is bad! Let's say that it evolves each time a little and thankfully! 😜👍🏽✌🏽

    • @gwadaflat
      @gwadaflat 5 років тому +1

      DriveMag Riders I never said that his choice was bad, I teased a little! cool Man! Now, would he have made the mm choice if he had the 2018 R1200GS and the R1250GS before the eyes? that's a question, we'll never have the answer! Yes the GS 2018 is and remains an excellent vintage in the history of the GS! 😜✌🏽

    Nice informative video, just annoying I had to adjust the volume all the time.
    for future reference.. nobody likes shitty music that is much louder than the voices.
    Better yet, cut the music altogether. I'm quite sure at least 80% of the viewers prefer the sound of motorcycles over some repetitive techno track.
    A microphone under the back seat does wonders for recording engine/exhaust sound without wind noise...
