YAHOO! I am a 60-something man who has always been very handy around the house. I AM an accomplished DIY-er! But I have always struggled with this issue my whole "fix-it" career! THIS WORKS! Tape AND pipe dope! Tight as a drum!
EXCELLENT! In the first 39 seconds you totally described the problem I'm having with a well water pressure tank and brand new, shiny, brass fittings. Because of "supply chain" problems', I got the fittings at Lowes, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware. It looked gorgeous! But it dripped. 4 times I took it apart, each time I cleaned it up and then I put on more, and more, layers of Teflon tape (finally 7 total wraps in the correct direction) and I tightened it to the point I worried about busting a $60 tee. But it still dripped... I'm off to get some juicy pipe sealant! THANK YOU! And a very MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and yours! From the left side of OHIO
Thank you so much. Drips were making me crazy. I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. This video was so helpful. I feel like teflon tape alone used to work and I have never used pipe sealant before.
I agree, there is some difference in the machining process these days that you almost have to use both. I only seal threads with both sealants anymore. To risky and time consuming not to. Thanks for sharing and leaving a comment! Take care.
After having a leak on my check valve into my new well water pressure tank using only teflon, your video helped me understand what is happening! The threads on the brass nipple are apparently sharper than what was in the female check valve FIP and the teflon tape is not fully filling the "valleys" in the threads, causing a pin hole leak to get by the threads and come up through the teflon tape as a leak! It's only 1 drip ever 5 seconds but the pipe dope/sealant would certainly seal those threads!
Your right. Thread pitch tolerances from off-shore sources can be excessive causing leakage. Back in the day when fittings were North American made, dope or thread used to be adequate, with very few problems. Thanks for your video.
Thank you. You're right, I think a lot of these pipes are manufactured out of spec but not to the point of it getting rejected. Tape and pipe dope = success. It was either that or I was going to over torque the pipe and cross the threads which means it's a bigger issue. Have a great day!
I just pulled an rv hot water tank I replaced last year because the cold inlet started leaking. I don't know if you've ever replaced an rv hot water tank, but it's a pain. To have to do it twice, (I pulled the tank because it soaked the wood underneath and i needed to dry it), is mass suckitude. I'll try your recommendation and get back to you! I appreciate your time and sharing the knowledge, because i am definitely a backyard diy guy and all the tips really help.
Hi, thanks for great tip. I just made a house in Thailand (I`m from Norway), and PVC is used in all the plumbing, often the cheapest versions you can eget. After 6 months I already got a leak in wall as I tried to change a bathroom tap, pulled it to tight I assume. After removing the tile and brick, I´ve finally been able to connect the pipe again. But it´s dripping slightly..... I looked at your video and will try your way, thanks!
I found that the quality of fittings makes a huge difference. Home improvement stores love selling parts that look great but are imprecisely made with low-quality materials. I have had so many issues with Everbilt brass fittings from Home Depot that I stopped buying plumbing stuff from them.
I've had service calls at Home Depot for fire sprinkler repairs. Every now and then I'll use some fittings from the store. Those fittings will leak more often than not. Especially with around 150psi on the system.
Excellent video! There is one thing that you did not mention that I think is important, that is never put the pipe though on/in the female fitting. Doing so Will only push the pipe though back in toward the pipe and ultimately into the system.
I'm working on getting my air compressor fittings to stop leaking and having the same problem. I'd heighten it up a reasonable amount and squirt it with Windex. it would have a slow bubble. I tighten it up more and the air leak increased. I tightened it up all i thought it would stand without without twisting off (1/4" brass nipple) and it leaked even more. Next stop is the hardware store for some pipe sealant. THANKS
8:28And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Thank you!! EXACTLY what I needed to cap off a diverter valve under the sink, where one line went to the just-removed R/O system and don't want to replace right now. Knew if I simply screwed the cap on it, it was going to leak. This info is exactly what I needed. God bless!!
I just redid a leaky fitting with blue tape and TFE paste , worked great no leaks , thank you , I guess everything does work for good if you love God and use tape and TFE paste :0)
Hi, I did not have the stuff you used. I don't have the blue tape but I do have the white tape. I don't have the pipe dope but I do have a tube of plumber grease and it seems to work fine. Thanks for the video.
Speaking for myself I would not use grease. I used to do alot of these repairs in peoples homes and not being an actual sealant I would not have taken the chance on a future leak. Sounds like you were able to make it work though. Thanks for sharing and checking out the video!
Thank you very much. I replaced my water heater valve and the fittings kept leaking. 1 small drop would ease it’s way out at a time. Watched your video and………. Problem solved. Thanks again.
Sure enough back flow presenters fittings are dripping. Going to try this in just a few minutes. Hopefully it works. Don't like doing this on a Sunday, but my mules in a ditch do to speak.
Oh god THANK YOU!!! I installed a new toilet and used that exact gold male to male fitting because I installed a valve. It leaks! For the time being I have it wrapped with towels. Its just seeping but now I know what to do!
I would take everything back apart and make sure you have everything correct. Atleast that is what I would do. Not exactly sure what the problem might be. I would just take it back apart double check everything and seal it up like I demonstrate in the video. Also alot of times the shutoffs start to go bad. It just depends on what type you have. There are compression, push on, threaded , so on. I generally replaced shutoffs it looked like they could be problematic. Hope this helps and thanks for checking out the channel!
Thanks for the reply. No it leaks because I just used white teflon tape like I always have. I think you are right with the out of tolerance comment. I am going to do your method tomorrow on wifes toilet connection. Is there a drying time or can I turn water on right after? Thanks again!!
I know this is an older video but I'm hoping somebody has an answer can you use pipe dope on a compression fitting? I have a small drip on a water line going to my refrigerator ice maker it is a copper line with a compression fitting.
Sorry for the delayed response. I would not advise using any sealants on compression fittings because they seal based of the mating surface or some type of o ring. when you put sealant on them it usually makes the leak worse. the best thing to do is go buy your self a new compression fitting cut that one out and replace it. Hope this helps take care!
I have a question related to this. I'm a Toyota Tech and I have installed a Remote Oil Filter kit for my trans on my 4Runner. Using an aluminum mount with brass fittings. I've wrapped the fittings about 30 different times but it still seeps trans fluid. Do you think you're vid idea would work to seal the leak? Thanks
Its possible that it would. I used to be a diesel technician and i would say you are going to want to get a thread sealant that is capable of coming into contact with petroleum. We used to use many different sealants and they are not all created equally. There are specific pipe sealants rated for your application. The problem your having is most likely being caused by the sealant not being sufficient to use with oil. Hope this helps and thanks for checking out the channel. Hope to hear from you on future videos.
Will this work with a plastic fitting to brass application? Working on a refrigeration unit and the way it was engineered, the heat exchange leaks on the outflow because the sweated brass fitting is female for both flow directions... because of this it leaks on the out flow and the tape alone is not able to create a tight seal and thus it leaks.
Yes I have used it on plastic to metal. Just don’t over tighten it. The liquid Teflon makes it really easy to to tighten and I have over tightened and split fittings before. Hope this helps!
I had brand new hose bibs installed when I had to re-pipe my house - one of them constantly leaks I bought two new hoses blaming them. Upon closer inspection of the threads on the hose bib. There is a notch/defect. I’m quite certain this is where the leak is coming from. Besides replacing the entire hose bib. Could I just use tape and dope?
I would think you could without any issues. You may just put a short nipple extension on it with tape and dope and thread your hose onto the nipple so it’s not a mess every time you want to take it off
Also sometimes the leak comes from behind the handle or the anti syphon valve. If it’s a common spigot like a watts the make repair kits for them as well.
Not knowing exactly what you’re dealing with my gut answer would be not to. Pipe threads are actually tapered threads that get tighter the further you go. Glad the video helped and thanks for checking out the channel! Hope to see you on future videos! Take care!
Works for PVC? Had a water leak and now having to redo everything because it threads into my water softener connection and don't wanna keep doing it over and over lol
Thanks for checking out the channel. You may look at whatever the product your using recommends. As for all the sealants I use there is no wait time. The blue monster sealant is actually supposed to stay flexible overtime.
I'm using threading tape and dope on my connection it's leaking I look for your channel and you tell me I'm doing it right well do I just need to make a tighter perhaps? Thank you for any answer
Not sure what the issue is you are having. I have never had a connection leak with this method. I would just double check the amount of tape wraps is what the tape calls for. I would also check that you are wrapping the pipe tape in the correct direction. If you wrap it wrong the fitting will actually take the tape off. Hope this helps and thanks for checking out the channel!
Thanks for checking out the video. I labeled it that because it is a common problem while doing repair work and it fixes leaking threaded plumbing wether its an old drip or new. Take care

I've had service calls at Home Depot for fire sprinkler repairs. Every now and then I'll use some fittings from the store. Those fittings will leak more often than not. Especially with around 150psi on the system.
