Another beautiful hike and video! I did the Lake Solitude hike last year because of you. Fell in love and moving to WY this year. Happy Anniversary! Keep sharing!
That is the nicest comment I've had to date Tammy🥰! That is so great to hear that you're moving to Wyoming! What part of Wyoming? You're going to be living my dream 😊, maybe we'll meet on the trails out there when Emily and I are empty nesters! I'm excited for you to see the next several vids!
Great video. We have hiked to Surprise lake many times and we always looked above and thought how neat it would be to go to the top of Disappointment peak. We were just too tired. You videoed much more of the great views back towards the east, than anyone else. First time we have viewed them that way. We are close to 80 now and will never get to see above Surprise lake in person. Thanks for a great video. Your wife is one tough cookie.
Thanks for the video. In August 2016 I hiked solo up to amphitheater lake, and I started talking to another couple hikers, they were headed up to the peak and invited me along. That peak was the highlight of that Teton visit for sure. That 360 degree view was epic. And I wasn’t disappointed for a bit
That is awesome! You unintentionally got up there 👍🏼! That view is one of my all time favorites. I'm finally headed back to the Tetons this summer and planning on tackling the Middle Teton. Can't wait! Glad you found the video and it brought back that memory for you!
It's very tricky. Next time you go there's a chimney that if you remove your backpack you can slide right up. Also, there's a more dangerous climbing section just to the right of the chimney. That climbing section is slip and get very hurt but it's only about 20-30 feet if I remember correctly.
Wow! Amazing views and what a hike to Disappointment Peak. Thanks for sharing. We are planning to be there in mid May to do some hiking. There will most likely be snow and I’m not that advanced of a hiker to try this trail to the peak. But I enjoy seeing others do it. Congratulations on your 20 year anniversary!
Thanks Cathy! We had a great time celebrating 🍻. My buddy that lives out there says they’ve had crazy amounts of snow this year. There will be plenty of great hikes to do even with the snow. The runoff/waterfalls in the spring will be the best ever! Just try to get as far up any of the canyons and it will blow your mind! Enjoy!
Wow! Ampitheater hike is "ok"... but this is truelly magical. I was there alone last week, but could not find route up chimney. Strong wind and rain were coming so decided to go back... next year!
I absolutely agree, Amphitheater is good but above that is mind blowing 🤯! That was one of my favorite adventures! That chimney section is sketch for sure, good call on turning around. Head up again when you can see for miles 😁👍🏼! The chimney is there but tricky to find.
Thanks Ken! I remember as a kid driving in Jackson Hole and seeing the Tetons from a distance and telling myself I want to go up there someday. It’s sooo addicting once you start doing that stuff 🤣👍🏼 cheers!
Huge bang for the effort put into that hike! A little sketchy after Amphitheater Lake but it adds to the adventure 👍🏼 hit me up if you ever go for it, there’s a really tricky area up there you should be aware of before attempting 😁👍🏼
😊 thanks Pamela! I so enjoy bringing them to everyone 😁… I have an arsenal of vids to edit from this past summer. In a couple weeks Dalton and I are heading out to Washington and Montana for a few more big adventures, soooo pumped! Cheers!!!
Thanks Andrew! A little over a month and I’ll be attempting Kane Lake and Devils Bedstead…. Looks like we’ll be dealing with a bunch of snow up there still. I remember you’ve been up that way👍🏼
@@TheMountainMatt Yup, last September. I only go as far as the lakes though LOL. I'm headed to the San Juan's in September and looking forward to that! Enjoy the trip! 👍
My dude!!!! Thank you ! This content is great!!! I am visiting in May 2023... and thanks to this video.... we are one a mission. I hope we summit disappointment peak! Do you think k there will be too much snow in may???
Thanks Justin I truly appreciate that. Unfortunately the Tetons have received a TON of snow this past winter. I have a friend that lives out there and it’s insane! If you have spikes/crampons and a giant will to succeed, you could possibly make it. In May the postholing will probably be horrible up high. The canyons will be off the charts with waterfalls though! No matter what you’ll still have a great experience! If you have experience in the alpine with tons of snow go for it, otherwise be very careful 👍🏼. Sorry to burst your bubble my man. Like I said, the canyons out there will be ridiculous this time of season! Let me know if you got any other questions. Cheers!
I'm visiting from the UK in August 2023 and am looking for bang-for-buck hikes that won't have too many other tourists about. This looks epic... epically hard. QUESTION. What would you do if you saw a bear? we don't have too many of those in Europe lol
This is definitely an awesome adventure! If you decide on this one do a little research. There is a tricky area just past Amphitheater Lake. You can either climb up thru the rocks or climb around to the left, which is class 4 maybe 5 😬. This hike will have tons of people until you pass Amphitheater Lake. If you want less people try Hanging Canyon (Lake of the Crags) or Avalanche Canyon to Lake Taminah/Snowdrift Lake. While I’m in the Tetons I usually carry bear spray. There’s lots of good info online about how to manage black and grizzly bears in the wild. It’s a GOOD idea to know the difference and how to react to each👍🏼. Have a blast ! The Tetons will blow your mind! Let me know if you have any other questions 😁. AllTrails app will have all these hikes👍🏼. Use my affiliate link in the description of any video for 30% off.
Thank you for sharing this epic video, and congrats on 20 years. I plan on going out there to hike around in May. What time of year did you do this hike?
Thanks! It's crazy that was already a couple years ago now. That was in September I believe. Cheers! May will probably still have a ton of snow up high... come prepared.
So when you're standing at Delta Lake and looking up, is the prominent mountain above the lake Disappointment Peak or the Grand Teton? 🤔 Maybe both? Another great watch, btw! 👏
Hey Matt Greetings from Florida! I haven't commented for roughly a year but this video has to be one of your best. Congrats on twenty!! You guys are made for each other both good people. I look forward to the vids coming up.
This looks amazing! I'm moving to the area soon and this will be on m list for sure. Question - how was the down climb? It looks like it could be a bit scary.
The chimney section is very tricky. You can remove your backpack and try to climb up and down it or climb as I did in the video. The down climb in that area is very sketchy so be careful. The rest is normal rock hopping and scrambling. Very steep after the lakes. Super fun up there though 😁👍🏼
Greatly appreciate your videos. They have been a solid resource for planning our family hiking trip to the GTNP. This hike really peaked my interest though, but I'm not quite sure my 12 year old twin daughters can handle the ascent to the summit. I'm having trouble finding anything else about the Chimney section, could you point me in the right direction?
I could only find 1 thing on the internet about it a few years ago while researching. Let me try to explain it for you… There’s a faint trail leading up the south side of Amphitheatre Lake to a great view point. From there I believe there’s another faint trail leading up to the chimney section. At that point there’s a climbing area with an anchor or two for rope or you can choose the chimney. I took the chimney on the way down but Emily took it on the way up. She said she just removed her backpack and made her way up. The climbing section at the chimney that I took was class 5. The rest was a bunch of good rock hopping and some climbing near the top. Good handholds and footholds up there. The top topped out at class 4ish. The way up wasn’t that difficult it’s the down climbing that is really sketchy at the chimney, if you’re off route. Not sure how your 12 year olds are with climbing but if it were me I wouldn’t bring mine for that section. Sorry to burst your bubble. The view above Amphitheater Lake is amazing if you just get there. You could search me on AllTrails and I believe you could download the route I took up and down. That might help. Also, I just talked with a friend of mine who lives out there and he just did Delta lake. TONS of snow still. They used crampons and ice axes.
@@TheMountainMatt Awesome info, thanks! The girls are super athletic, but I won't take any chances. I figure if they can get thru the chimney we'll call it a day and enjoy the views from there. We're going 2nd half of July, so hopefully the snow recedes a bit by then.
@@TheMountainMatt Thanks for your help. Got back from our trip a couple days ago. We made it to the Chimney, but my girls were a bit nervous and their legs were toast, so we ate lunch overlooking Amphitheater then headed back down. Told them we will be back. They were champs though. We did Grinnell Glacier and Highline at GNP as well to go along with all our other hikes. I think I have them hooked!
Probably made the right move at the chimney 👍🏼. The rest is even more strenuous after that. The overlook up there is top notch! Sounds like a successful trip! Those peaks are tricky. The altitude and elevation can play with anyone’s head when you get up high. Little by little each year 💪🏼👍🏼
Thanks for this video. My wife, daughter and I visited GTNP this past summer. It was tremendous. Our favorite hike was Surprise Lake. We are planning to return Summer 2025 for a few new hikes, and Disappointment Peak is at the top of our list. I have a quick question. Does the All Trails app show the route all the way to Disappointment Peak (using the chimney, coming up the southeast ridge?). I have been looking over maps and satellite images, and accessing this path from Amphitheater is not obvious to me, but perhaps in person it is hard to miss (?).
I'm glad you found the channel! Disappointment Peak will blow your mind 🤯. If you download and follow my map off of my Alltrails account (same name) it will take you directly to the chimney section. From there you can climb the wall to the left or look directly in front of you and you should see the actual chimney. If I remember correctly you have to do some hands and knees climbing up through that part. It helps a lot if you remove your bag. This section is fun but can be difficult depending on your route finding and climbing experience. I did some research online that helped a bit. I actually climbed that part but Emily took the chimney. We both took the chimney on the way down. The down climb was a bit terrifying for Emily so heads up with that. I'd make sure everyone in your party has some good climbing experience. It's a super fun climb and scramble from there on! Basically straight up till a complete drop-off in front of all the Tetons 👍🏼 ! ..... oh, once you make Amphitheater Lake head up the ridge to your left. I think there was a goat trail to the chimney section from there. It's a big day so start early so you can enjoy the view! Cheers!
I dink around a lot with filming and stuff but that day was about 6:30am to 7-7:30pm. 5,000 feet is tough! All of it to the lakes are trail. If you decide to tackle that hike/climb this fall hit me up before and I'll try to explain the crux part of the adventure just above Amphitheater Lake, it is tricky but doable for sure! Also, I have 5 more Teton videos coming out before October 2nd for you to help decide on what you'd like to hike. So make sure to check back periodically😁👍🏻. Thanks for watching!
