wrapping some paper towels soaked in vinegar for about 30 mins - 1hr then using a the rough side of an ordinary sponge to remove the vinegar will also do wonders for an old rusted barbell... you will notice the difference and if the first soak doesn't completely remove all rust just repeat about 1 or 2 more times and it will be in "like new" condition...
Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again to save us from eternal judgement and give us eternal life if we believe Him. Only God can save us and freely give us new life inside forever.
I just acquired Iron grip urethane dumbbell 55-75lb set. Some of them had rusty handles. I applied WD-40 and left the for 10-15 mins. Later I used a worn out, ugly, old grill scraper brush with metal bristles to scrap the rust off the handles. It worked out like a charm.
Just a heads up to everyone, our formula is NOT 3:1 oil. As a previous user of 3:1 oil, there were three components we wanted to address that are not present in 3:1. The safety, the odor and the residue left behind. What makes our oil different is that it is Food-Grade, Biodegradable, Odorless and leaves very little residue on your bar. And yes, it still has the anti-rust & corrosion properties in there as well. Our formula is dual-purposed: first as a preventative measure against rust and two to maintain/restore spin to the sleeves. As far as our brush, we tested several designs on many different finishes. We chose a stiff black Nylon brush so you aren't risking scratching up your bar's finish (if it has a finish). As stated in the video, if there is a good amount of rust already on the barbell then you may need something tougher. Just proceed with caution, making sure you aren't stripping the finish off your bar.
Thank you for this video man. I've been doing alot of Strongman recently and these videos have helped get me the right equipment. My friend needed to clean his barbell I sent him this video and he says this guy is worth subscribing to.
I have 3 brushes: plastic, brass, and steel bristles. The plastic-bristled brush gets used the zinc and chrome plated bars. I'll use the brass on the rare occasion that they require more work. My old Texas power bar has bare steel sleeves and a black oxide shaft. On that one I start with the brass brush and graduate to the steel brush when necessary. I live near the coast and my garage door is nearly always open. The TPB has a nice "patina" finish on it now.
Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again to save us from eternal judgement and give us eternal life if we believe Him. Only God can save us and freely give us new life inside forever.
Thank you for the recommendations. I got some barbells for my garage gym and most of them are Cerakote, But I still have a black zinc coated and really want to maintain all the equipment in good shape. Good video!! thanks!
Can I use a wire brush I got from hardware store. I used it on an black oxide olympic bar? I have a small rust stain and it it remove the original color off the bar?
In theory, you could coat the bar in any oil, epecially something with a low burning point like olive oil and super heat the bar to create a layer of oxidized oil on the surface of the bar. The layer of burnt oil can protect the bar from rust.
@@MatthewBester After some research, I'm thinking that boiled linseed oil would also make a nice durable finish that can be easily touched up. I would do the job outside and let the solvent completely evaporate before bringing the weights back inside though!
I notice dumbbell handles getting black spots on them its not rust but still unsightly, tried 2 kinds of metal polish with a tooth brush and rag, some black on the rag but spots are still there. Not sure what it is, some sort of tarnish but not rust.
It won’t damage the bar unless you apply a ridiculous amount of force or spend days doing it. Just make sure you use a steel brush for steel bars, using dissimilar metals can often speed up corrosion.
Found a bar thrown out the other day, I've been looking for a bar to work out with but they're like 150$ +, it's like pretty rusted up and my dad wants me to scrap it for a few bucks lol but I want to keep it, the ends that hold the weight spin and I don't know how to fix it, also it has clips but they're sucky and I need to clean the rust off them, I need to buy like 5 gallons of vinegar and try to find a tub to put it all in, and then after that I need 3 type oil or whatever it's called then u need to get some plates but the bar is legit like brand new it's super nice but it's rusty, doesn't have end caps, and the ends spin. If anyone has suggestions on how to make the ends stop spinning lmk
I know I’m 6 months late replying but the ends are supposed to spin, it’s not broken. Lots of high quality bars have spinning sleeves so don’t worry about that!
Do you recommend using a drill with a copper brush attachment to brush of the rust of the Barbells? I need to do multiple barbells and was wondering if I could speed up the process without damaging the barbells.
i bought second hand olympic power bar named barbell. it is pin lock type sleeves but spin is pretty poor i opened the other sleeve. and there is only bushing which shows sleeves inside end. ho should i service this bar. Thanks!!. and what pin use if the old pin is damaged in the operation
Great video as always. Last summer I acquired an old beat up barbell that came with some plates I was going to restore. I’ll post the link a reply to this comment. I think you’ll enjoy it.
Hey pal, its brown bristle brush. Do search it in google images. Most probably you can get this in any hardware shop. It looks like a wooden brush with iron wires sticked to it. Look like a brush though.
If using a wire wheel or material based sanding wheel make sure you use an organic cartridge respirator. The material has hexavalent chrome in it. This is the same stuff referenced in the movie Erin Brockovich. They ban even placing this stuff on the market in the EU. Its nasty stuff and WILL mess you up.
Amazing job! Perhaps olive oil would be better, in terms of residue that might get into your palms, if you don't wear gloves while throwing those weights around!
No it's not, and if its not in the collars and is messing with the rotation of the plates and its just on the knurling were you place your hand, no it does not effect nothing at all.
I cleaned my bar with a rust dissolver, then added the 3-in-1 oil. The next day my bar was already brown and rusty. I think its flash rust: do I just need to use more oil next time? Also: can you use rifle blue to recolor the barbell if it's patina is brown???
Valvoline moly fortified multi-purpose Grease. put a little in the pulley but mostly around to where the rope will touch it. Then put some 3 in 1 multi purpose oil inside of the pulley. No need to open the pulley, it has a point on the end to where it will easily just squeeze in. took me forever but I found the right one and that's the right one for me hope it helps even though it's been a while since you asked
As always practical and worth seeing! Can I advise, please, use safety glasses!!! Millions watch your vids. Promoting right safety culture would be extremely valuable for all your subscibers!!!
You're better off spending an extra $100-200 for the stainless steel or Cerakote Ohio Bar to avoid having to spend hours a month trying to maintain a bar. If you consider that your time is worth at least $10/hour, you should make up the loss in 1-2 months. A no-brainer, especially when you consider the added cost of the oil and brushes. But I get how some people actually like to do the work and take pride in the process and maintenance of the gym. Me personally, I like efficiency and would prefer to keep my time in the gym to working out and nothing more. Great video, however.
+ Ether Man I do maintenance on my barbells and dumbbells at most twice a year. So 1 hour twice a year at $10 will take a lot of time to make up the loss. But if your bars are seeing very heavy use or are for professional usage then yes the expensive bar makes sense.
Thin about it, why would a brass bristle brush wear a steel bar?...basic physics, something harder will not wear/erode if brushed with something softer, so go ahead with a brass brush as this will only erode the corrosion/rust as his is softer and not the bar as it is harder!
I'm just going to use gloves and use some tape to wrap it on the bar. Idc anymore. You can't get hurt from this flash rust on these bars. In prison the bars were all rusted up.

Thanks a lot restored an old barbell that was sitting out in the rain and its like new!
Picked up a wire brush drill bit and went to work on some bars. Worked so much better!
Michael Kory asking out of ignorance....doesn’t steel on steel damage the bar?

Kyle Neese yes but you can always refinish. Would only recommend that on really old bars.

Use phosphoric acid an steel wire brush. Brush at 45 degree angle as that's the knurl angle then 45 other way. Rinse with water then oil the bar.

I wish. That's the best looking finish in my opinion but I lack a barrel of oil and a furnace. 😔

Great Video! Best regards from Germany
How do you feel about about WD40 for preventative maintenance? That's what I have been using but now wondering if I should switch to 3 in 1 oil.
Not for lubing the bearings of course, just for the actual barbell shaft.
I would switch to 3 in 1 personally
Really helpful video!
Step one: Remove the bar from the bar rack...could be my favorite step...LOL
I came right to the comments when I heard that

Not to be a wimp...but wear some safety glasses...those metal brushes have a way of spraying barbs at your face...
Best comment ever safety first
Nothing wimpy about safety. Good tip!
Rust on his eyes
Any advice on zinc Coated bars (Rogue Bar 2.0 Black Zinc)? nylon brush and 3-1 wont do the trick!
Any reason why we couldn’t use a wire brush attachment on a drill ? Is it the fear that it’ll wear down the knurling too much ?
Ngl ur edits are why I subscribed to ur channel
Yes. Always oil before rubbing lol
Why did the oil get rid of the rust quicker than the brush alone?
