Sakura koi was my first watercolor set, and still the one I'm currently using right now. I mainly bought it because of how many colors it has for a low price; plus the waterbrush and sponges are convenient for travelling. However they are pretty bulky and I also noticed that my works fade over time even though I remember them being vibrant when I painted them. But for someone in a budget, it's a pretty good set. Now I'm thinking of purchasing Prima or Cotmans. Thanks for the review!
Tomino I’ve been using Cotman’s for plein air work. They are fairly good when you use them that way. I just opened a box of Turner Artist Watercolors. I have a feeling from seeing my color wheel that I may start using them instead of the Cotman’s. The Turners are much brighter and easier to wet.
a tip. I have only had the Sukura paints a short period of time but I have found if I take a small spray bottle and spray all he pans before starting that does help some.
This was my very first watercolor set when I asked my papa to buy it for me as a graduation gift. The colors are vibrant enough but they aren't as light fast(?) as I hoped. The colors can fade over time but they are really great if you are into travelouging and on-the-go painting since they are nice if you dilute them well enough~
Mari Akutsu well I always bored when I'm in the Philippines because in the morning it's boring no kid is playing because that is there school day in the afternoon I would play with my cats because in the morning they sleep in my lap so maybe I can use this set and paint(there is a table for me to paint)and I also want to improve my drawing skills it's a bit bad but my painting skill is good
Thanks for your reviews. They are honest, clear, and to the point. I particularly like when you compare the different brands. It helps a lot to see the colors and watch you apply and mix.
I have this set of Koi and it's really good but after buying the Prima I find that the Prima are more intense so you don't use as much! Thank you for doing a comparison, I'm glad you did this one!
Just bought this set today - have not used it yet. I knew before I bought it that it was essentially student grade pigments, but I wanted it for sketching - not for serious efforts that might be sold. Most, if not all of what I will use the set for will stay in sketchbooks. I also had limited choices at my local big box arts and crafts store (and had gift certificate dollars to spend). Koi and Cotman were the two choices, and this Koi set seemed to have a nicer box/palette design. I don't have studio space in my home, I have to drag out my stuff to create art, then put it all away in a closet. My thought was that this field sketch box would make it easier for me to do watercolor sketches, as well as be handy to take along on vacations.
I’m not a professional artist so Sakura koi 18 tubes is my first decent watercolor and it’s unexpected that I was able to sell artworks using it. I painted a lot and still not yet over. I want to try other brands but I just want to finish what I have before getting new ones. It’s not practical to keep spending to get loads. Will consider your advise in next purchase. Thanks.
I believe Sakura koi is for the new student, low budget college student, or beginners (including people who love this brand) It’s affordable (i can get mine rn from Walmart for $20) and it’s nice and close to what you would pay for double or triple but keep in mind this is on a budget, not professional expensive
Crystal•Sugar Gamer I know this comment was written six months, but I wanted to say that the Prima confections watercolours are absolutely worth it. I found them on amazon for 19 US dollars, so yeah. There are obviously less colours in that set, but I personally find the quality to be a dealbreaker.
Old thread, but I'm glad for this discussion. The Prima colors are INTENSE. Gonna leave the Sakura aside after this video and continue buying more Prima!
Palette is sturdy, useable even for large washes ( you can get an extra set and use the mixing area with the first set for even more mixing space) you can remove the crappy paint and tray...make a tape covered cardboard tray to put other half pans of good paint. This is a little on the heavy side but a very usable plein aire palette.
I've had the Sakura paints for a little while, but I really enjoy them because I am used to using really terrible and cheap paints. I think if you're not willing to spend 40+ dollars on only watercolors that these are amazing and I can confirm that the brush that comes with it works really well
Your conclusions match mine very closely. I don't care much for the Koi paints but the plastic box is very handy as a traveling sketch kit. The plastic bit holding the paints can be removed and your own assortment of pans and half pans stuck inside. My understanding is that the palette was designed for sketching on post card sized paper, which is or was very popular in Japan, and the lid is perfectly sized to hold that size paper. With better paint (I use Windsor & Newton Artist colors,) it works extremely well for that specific purpose. Mike
+Michael Sherck Thanks. Someone just messaged me a photo of this box with the pan holder removed and she packed it to the brim with her own pans. Great idea!
I used the Koi Watercolor 12 set for a couple of years and I honestly thought it is pretty decent for sketching. The colors are decently vibrant and gets the job done. However, of the all of the colors, I didn't enjoy purple the most since it was very weak and pastel-like. Great review. I enjoy listening to your opinions and recommendations. :)
I used to wonder whether the intensity of colours decreases for all brands whenever they are mixed to get secondary colours. Now I know why I felt like that! Being a beginner & not have had too much of an experience with other brands; I was under the impression that all water colours are dull...Thank you for clearing my doubts :-)
I have a 12 set and recently got the 30 set. I have nothing to complain about really, I just love these watercolors. I know that there are a lot of better brands out there and I've tried some better brands too, but I don't see a point in upgrading to something better because I really live these.
Teoh Yi Chie I also own kuretake, white nights, w&n cotman, van gogh, and a few tubes of Daniel Smith. My favourites are the kuretake and koi, I don't really understand the hype about daniel smith or other professional brands. I'm still pretty much a begginer but even if I was a pro I don't see why spending so much money on professional stuff is worth it
And btw, I really try to avoid toxic paints because I'm very paranoid about it and don't enjoy painting if the paints are toxic - so having some student grade paints that are safe to use really makes a difference for me.
Don't forget the waterbrush included in the Koi set :) After upgrading to artist quality paints, I still get tons of use out of the Koi set. It's so convenient that I still keep it in a diaper bag so my kids can use it on the go whenever they need to sit still for more than 5 minutes.
I have the Koi 24 set and enjoy them for my travel set. At home I mix my pallets. I have an old Prang set,Reeves, and a Montrose Paint-Rite WC set. I have made little pots of Daniel Smith's Watercolors from tubes. Lots of fun to play with since I am not a "serious" painter, but like to make cards.
I recently purchased this Koi set and as a beginner it suits my needs. I was impressed with the layout, the removable mixing palette and additional space inside the lid. The one thing that puzzles me is that Burnt Sienna is not included in this set. The color Light Red is to the left of Burnt Umber, which I assume is Sakurs's substitue for Burnt Sienna. This Koi set (#24) is an adequate, affordable set for beginners/students, but those experienced with watercolors will be greatly disappointed. Compared to W & N Cotman set (#12), IMO the Koi set is the way to go b/c of the 12 additional colors, if you're just starting out with watercolors. Many thanks for all your great tutorials....you've helped out many, many people like myself!
mary birder you cant reccommend sakura koi over w&n when you compared a smaller set to sakura koi. Im sorry, but w&n cotman set is actually better cause w&n isnt chalky, its lightfast, quite vibrant and more. Sakura koi is a begginer set but i would start with winsor and newton cotman caus its actually better then sakura koi
I'm surprised that the Prima watercolours top the Sakura as I have seen many UA-cam artists who love the Sakura ones. Naturally, the Prima are new so there are less videos with them out there, but I remember seeing a UA-cam art reviewer saying the Prima ones weren't so great because they were a little chalky and stained the tin. I absolutely love how the Prima ones come in the great tin though so I reckon it's worth it! Just surprised that the Sakura Koi don't rate higher. Interesting stuff!
+Beret Nice Prima's good. The rest test is when you mix the colours. Prima is able to retain their vibrancy much better compared to Sakura (which probably uses too much binder).
Bought this same set before understanding the different brands available and found them more transparent than Mission Gold but for the price, they are a bargain and great for travel. Thanks for showing how to attach the palette! Had a giggle for not figuring this out and was wondering why there were all those legs and holes in the box then decided it was a way to make it all fit together and protect the pans. Excellent review, thanks!
This is the set I chose to get into watercolor last year and I love it... it was so convenient to have so many colors for cheap- so for a beginner who didnt understand much about color mixing, the variety is great. I love the palette with its walls that the metal boxes dont have. And that waterbrush! Its still my sole painting brush outside because I dont want to carry water wells. I was able to add in half pans to where the brush goes later on as I got professional colors, and now I use daniel smith colors in the Prima box and am more knowledgeable about colors and mixing. The prima is def. more vibrant.. for some reason (maybe the fillers/binders?) I used the sakura set a lot and the paint pans dont have any indentations in it to show that my paintbrush has been picking up paint, whereas my own half pans show their use quickly.
i will say after buying and using the koi watercolor set i have found that (and this is most noticable on hot pressed watercolor paper) but some colors tend to stain the paper and wont lift for anything, I know im still new to watercolors but its a bit frustrating not being able to make a wash without the initial place where the color was put down sticks out like a sore thumb. just something to consider, it could be me but i have a very old set of artist loft watercolors that had very mininal (if any) staining compared to the koi set.
Thank you for the review and for the comparison with Prima. Koi Sakura watercolors are a bit better than Reeves watercolor. Compared to W & N Artist watercolor, the Koi Sakura have larger particles than artists watercolor, hence that chalkiness you are describing about. And your analysis is very helpful. And love the bird singing in the background while you are talking
I think I bought 5 olive greens from daniel smith, Winsor, etc trying to find the same hue that koi has. I started my journey with these colors even though I had a set of holbein I hadn't started using yet. There's something about koi that is special and brings very fond memories even though I could never use them today. I have 150 daniel smith, full holbein set and you just can't go back but they were fun and freeing.
Quite late to the party: I've been using that very sketchbox for on the go painting. I agree they're not the best possible, but they are very convenient!
I really like the aquamarine, quin rose and purple from this set. I mainly bought it for the box lol..the arrangement seemed very attractive (with the sponge, waterbrush and palette and all) I put Holbein paints on the palette nowadays and use them mostly XD But thanks a lot for comparing it with the Prima Marketing set, I've been eyeing those for a while now and it's such a nice set with such bright colours...and the application seems very smooth. Gonna have to get me some of those!! I found that the Sakura Koi are kind of a nightmare to make large paintings with...still I guess it's a decent set to play around with if you WANT a lot of colours for a cheap-ish price. The waterbrush is nice too.
What do you mean when you said you put Holbein paints? Do you take everything out and put it in there? I'm going to buy one and I still don't know what to use the box for once the paints are gone... Ur reply will help! Thanks 😀😀😀😀
Kawaii Cute Well it comes with a separate palette which is meant to be used for colour mixing, but I put holbein paints on it lol. I also kept a little space for colour mixing. And honestly, I did think of that issue of what to do once all the paint is finished, I've decided to fill it with my other favourite watercolours. But honestly if you really like the sakura koi watercolours, then you can buy them in tubes and fill up the wells where the paint used to be. Hope this helps!
+Kawaii Cute No problem!! Hmm well do you have a budget in mind? For Artist grade paints, there are some wonderful options....such as Sennelier, Schmincke...And Cotman, Van Gogh are really good quality student grade paints. There's so many options tho. Ofcourse Holbein are wonderful paints!!
+Nox Moony on the side, where the sponges are placed, can u put half pans? I don't use sponges and I would like to use that space. Thanks for replying to my questions! 😂😀😀😀
This is a great review! It's very thorough and very factual. I also liked how you compared it to a watercolor set of the similar price so we know how they match up if we choose to buy only one.
Thank you for the review and the comparison! Helped me a lot to decide which set to go for. Since there aren't good watercolor sets where I am from I have to order them online. It's a big cost for me so I really have to be sure about what I want ordered and this review helped me a lot to see the properties of the Koi set and its comparison to other colors. I found your channel recently and having been going over many of your reviews because they are so interesting and comes from a very knowledgeable point of view. All the best. Big fan.
Well, I was thinking of buying Sakura Koi set since i'm just a begginer and, it's contain the waterbrush too, pretty economic :v (Plus the design is one of the reason why). But after watching your video, i think that i should consider more to how the colors i would like to present in my work. Thank you for great sharing!
This was the second paint I used. Daler Rowney Aquafine was the first. I had a hard time learning how to mix colors with both. Using the paints straight from the pans was not a problem though. For journaling, the Sakura is fine. But when I had my first experience with artist's grade watercolors, I gave away my Aquafine and Sakura paints.
I've been trying to decide between these 2 sets and the winsor and Newton cotman 12 set. It was pretty awesome that you compared 2 in this one! I'm using some daler rowney simply paints right now. They are all right, but I really want a travel pallet. I like the layout of the koi watercolor, the colors from the prima set, and the quality of winsor and Newton... Decisions are difficult! Your reviews have been really helpful though!
you used the prima watercolor confections tropical, it is really pigmented and more intense because u doesn't use the classic one of the prima. prima has many variations of pallets in their confections. just saying. i have one 12 colors of the Sakura Koi and it is good for a beginner and for travelling. but thankyou for the video, it really helps =)
Love your reviews on paints. Very honest, informative and to the point. You always go an extra step to get your opinion and point across, like mixing and comparing. That’s why I keep coming back to your reviews. yes that noise was like fingernails down a chalkboard. Ouchy on the teeth n head. Haha.
I bought this set @ Hobby Lobby. I happen to love them for plien air work. Easy to use, packs in small bag. I have others, but I have no negative thing to say about them.
Thank you Teoh Yi Chie for an informative and useful channel. My opinion; "just say NO to any manufacture who will not give you access to pigment information." They may look pretty now....
I purchased a box set exactly like yours for maybe $10 at a flea market a couple years ago. I had the same impression. The watercolors seemed chalky. I would use them for little practice pieces, but not much more.
I agree. I bought a bunch of cheaper water color sets to play around with until I can get my stuff out of storage and out of all the ones I used I liked sakurai Koi the least.
I have the Sakura Koi 24 color set. It also came with a waterbrush; but, I am not impressed with the brush. I have a couple of Niji waterbrushes which I like much better; but, they don't fit into the case. I like the set because of the box. The paints don't flow as well as some of the other brands that I have. Maybe that is because of the extra fillers in the mix.
Ok ok I know I’m really late but I just found his channel Well I don’t know if I should get this set as it is quite costly but in the comments section I see some people say that they can get it for under $20 but in where I live it is about $30-$100++ dollars I really don’t understand
The one Teoh recommended is the Prima Watercolor Confections Tropicals, which is currently on sale on Amazon for $27, not the titled paints. Hope this helps.
This was one of my 1st sets. Since.... I removed the horrible plastic palette with KOI paints & replaced it with half pans of Daniel Smith. I love the container and tray.. I use it for traveling. 😂
Teoh Yi Chie Well, I could go to our nearest Deovir art store (still far, but better than online) and pick up a set of 12 for php 985.00 or about $20 when converted, but thanks for recommending it, I am actually currently using the 18 color set of sakura koi.
i got the sakura water color it work fine with me as long i dont add a lot of water like he did --- add little of water with paint it will be intense colors
The old holy grail (student/hobby) sets are now overshadowed by the cheap new introductions. I’m glad I didn’t get the Sakura Koi set way back when, I got a wheel (Koh I Noor knockoff) and some watercolor crayons and colored tapes instead. I enjoyed the wheel a lot. For the price, Sakura Koi isn’t very competitive in quality anymore. W&N Cotman is the same price, or even cheaper.
Teoh, I'm taking a trip to Alaska, am use to using Daniel Smith watercolor, want a travel palette I can easily transport as I'll be on ships, planes, trains, buses, and everywhere over a 3 week period. I'd like something I don't have to worry about leaking. What would you suggest? The Koi colors don't seem to be the quality I'm use to. Thanks....
I just bought a set of Windsor Newton/Cotman. They haven't arrived yet but I'm excited. I almost bought these Koi watercolors, it was between them. I really want a Whiskey set, except they don't come with colors & the box is very pricy. The set I bought was only 13.95. So they won the draw!😃 it looks like the prima are very very nice in the pigment area. I really like your reviews very informative, thank you. The Koi do have a lot more colors don't they? Except a person can mix the extra colors, maybe.
+Gail Gassen Koi sets have 12, 18 and 24 colours. Anyway, if you want to mix as many colours as you can, include as many variation of primary colours, e.g. Yellow, red, blue. But many sets include convenient colours like green, brown, black to save time from mixing.
I have both of these! I still like the Newton Windsor cotman more XD. Not sure why but my koi paints crack after they dry. I like the cotman plastic box more than the metal box that comes with prima, it just looks like the paint sticks more to the plastic than metal. Also a question where can I buy empty half pans? I want to swap out some colors. Thanks!
The binder probably wasn't able to hold the pigments together that's why it cracked. You can get empty pans from Amazon USA or Jackson's Art www.amazon.com/Palette-Plastic-Empty-half-pan/dp/B006FHORHE?tag=ttmus-20 www.jacksonsart.com/jackson-s-empty-plastic-half-pan?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=c9f0f895fb98ab9159f51fd0297e236d
first of all, thanks for the review. This was a very helpful video. I have Sakura Koi tube set of 12 watercolors and I do think they get a bit chalky and they absorb dust too. I have a question about pan set. What is the use of those two sponges provided in the set on sides???
+Deepti Soni They are for drying the brush. Like if you have too much paint on the brush and it is too watery, you can dry it off slightly before painting. Or you can dry the brush, and suck water from paper.
Teoh Yi Chie thank you so much! I was really confused back there. so these are nothing but substitutes for paper towels! thanks again for answering me! ❤💕
+Manfred Knie Just just put some water, clean it with an old brush, and clean it off with water again. You will not be able to clean off all the colours completely because some of the colours are staining and will go beneath the surface, even for plastics, such as Phthalo Blue or Phthalo Green.
I have a questions that's been on my mind lately. Is it really okay to use other colors while your brush is still stained with a different color? Like won't the color pan be stained of a different color?
If you want to keep your pans clean, then you should minimize picking other colours with a stained brush. For colours that are easy to dirty, e.g. yellow, I will make sure my brush is clean. For colours that are stronger and not as easy to dirty, e.g. blue, red, and green, I don't mind using a stained brush to pick the colour from the pan. It depends on the colour. For example, greens are usually best used when mixed with other colours, so it may be better to pick green with a stained brush. Check out this related video ua-cam.com/video/h9KOMdCzNCE/v-deo.html
I know this is a year old, but if you see my comment, can you tell me what the bits of sponge are for in field kits? There seems to be 2 in the Koi set. I have a piece of sea sponge in my W&N field set. I assumed my piece was for wetting the paper. But I'm not sure and the sponges in the Koi kit don't look as if they would do that, so I am thinking there may be another use. I love your reviews by the way. Your sketching and painting is a delight to watch and I envy both of those skills a lot :-)
Thank you! That makes more sense now. I always have a few sheets of kitchen paper towel in my bag to use for this so never thought about the sponge in that context!
I've heard the sakura watercolors fade away over time is that true? Also would you recommend them? Its almost my birthday and i've been wanting to buy this watercolor set for a while now but after watching a lot of reviews on this set I'm having second thoughts... Should i get the sakura koi watercolors or the prang watercolors? Please answer
have you ever tried the sonnet watercolors from st. petersburg? i couldn't afford the white nights set so i went for the sonnet and i'm waiting for it to be delivered, would love if you had a review on them because i haven't seen any yet :)
I've not tried Sonnet before. Are they cheaper than White Nights? I thought White Nights is actually quite affordable for the amount of paint given in the 12 full pan set. I bought mine on eBay.
very true, the st. petersburg brand is really affordable! the sonnet set was 24 colors for $ 18 from ebay as well, which was a little nicer for my budget haha :) i'll definitely check out your white nights video!
i love both but i can't find prima here in the philippines but the sakura koi in thirty colors i think or 24 but they are instock in my province but since i already have the simbalion gouache i don't need prima but i really wanting it thanks teoh!
Hey. Can you, please, make a comparison video review for Cotman pen brush set and Van Gogh Watercolor Pocket Box Set. Boxes look similar, so what's inside?
Do they also feel chalky to the touch when dry if you run a finger across them? Have you had any of the color to flake or lift if you touch them? I've seen some artists on UA-cam to say that the colors come out more vibrant from tubes.
"Hue" ALWAYS means that it's NOT the classical pigment that have given the color the wellknown name. Instead it's a modern pigment or a mix of modern pigments that have been deemed to have preferable properties. Usually that means a lot cheaper. Or available at all, which some classical may not be any longer, due to environmental and health laws. In a few cases, Alizarin Crimson, Rose Madder, Chrome Yellow, Scarlet Lake, Sap Green,.. the substitute may actually also be considerably more durable. This is typically the case in 'Artist' ranges when you come across a "hue". Since we don't know what goes into Prima Marketing's colors, why don't you paint up some graded, weak washes, cut them into half and tape one half of them against the inside of a window for some summer months. (store the other half dark, for comparison). Then we'll see.
oh no, the Koi water color set. I was thinking of getting prima after your review on that, but this was cheaper. it's okay for trouble shooting some city-scapes, since i'm a beginner.
i feel its kinda weird that u compare artist grade and student grade though, like its pretty obvious that artist grade have better colors, and ur dissing sakura a lot for being worse than artist grade while it is set as student grade watercolors
do you have any recommendations about student grade watercolor set in a pan ( or do they only come in tube form) that is reasonably price and won’t break the bank?
+elsa Grace The pan holders are smaller than standard size half pans, so you can replace the paints with pans. The only way is to dig out the colour and squeeze a new one in.
Hi, I am just starting out in watercolors and struggling on whether to buy this sakura koi set or opt for a sennelier's 12 pan travel set. In your opinion which one should I get? I know one is student grade and the other is artist brand but still... #help
If you're in USA, I would recommend Prima Marketing's Tropicals watercolour set for beginners. It's cheap and good. Cheaper than Sennelier. The box is of good design too. You can move on to using better quality paints later on. www.parkablogs.com/content/review-prima-marketing-watercolor-confections-tropicals
That's the main problem, I don't live in the US but rather in North Africa, specifically in morocco.. and nor prima marketing nor W&N don't ship here..
Oh, it's best to get watercolour from stores where you can buy easily, hopefully without much shipping charges. That way when you use up the paints, you can buy replacement easily.
the primatek isn't available with the same prices up here in Canada....the only one's I have in the area is this and winsor...would you say this is better or worse than winsor cotmans??
+Quinn Park Winsor Newton Cotman is a good student grade paint. I think it's better than Sakura. If you cannot find it, look for Saint Petersburg White Nights 12 pan box set which is good too. Or the Prima Marketing watercolour sets, either Classic or Tropical.
thanks! unfortunately, where the cotman 12 set (the smaller pocket one, not the pocket plus) is about $21, the prima costs around $40 and the white nights is currently not found (this is amazon canada btw)
+Lê Hà Minh Anh Cotman has a box that uses standard size watercolour pans so you can easily replace them or colours in the future. Quality wise, Cotman may be slightly better but difficult to tell really.
\ (•◡•) /
Deborah Lynch i do that too though on different palettes... :)
Deborah Lync
Thank you for the tip! I just bought the Sakura Koi watercolor set!
Me too!! I carry a small spray bottle with this koi set! It makes so much difference.
Mari Akutsu well I always bored when I'm in the Philippines because in the morning it's boring no kid is playing because that is there school day in the afternoon I would play with my cats because in the morning they sleep in my lap so maybe I can use this set and paint(there is a table for me to paint)and I also want to improve my drawing skills it's a bit bad but my painting skill is good
Isnt it chalky when it dries
@@btsarmylover3696 cat is coool
Im currently using the 36 colour set and I absolutely love them ( I dislike the waterbrush though)
this is probably going to be my first set ever
Thanks for your reviews. They are honest, clear, and to the point. I particularly like when you compare the different brands. It helps a lot to see the colors and watch you apply and mix.
+tabortooth11 Thanks :-D
I have this set of Koi and it's really good but after buying the Prima I find that the Prima are more intense so you don't use as much! Thank you for doing a comparison, I'm glad you did this one!
+AllyKatPerth Thanks! :-D
ThatGirl711 which is more affordable?
This guy has a video for everything. I loved him for iPad reviews and now after buying a watercolor kit, he has watercolor videos available.❤️
You're the artist I trust most when it comes to product reviews, thanks you.
+Normi Shamblin Thanks for your support and trust 😁
Just bought this set today - have not used it yet. I knew before I bought it that it was essentially student grade pigments, but I wanted it for sketching - not for serious efforts that might be sold. Koi and Cotman were the two choices, and this Koi set seemed to have a nicer box/palette design. I don't have studio space in my home, I have to drag out my stuff to create art, then put it all away in a closet. My thought was that this field sketch box would make it easier for me to do watercolor sketches, as well as be handy to take along on vacations.
ok, yes the paint is great, awesome, but my real question is what is the brush you are using?! beautiful, big ol' fluffy wash brush
The white handle brush? That's a Nevskaya Palitra watercolour brush

Teoh Yi Chie thanks so much!

Crystal•Sugar Gamer I know this comment was written six months, but I wanted to say that the Prima confections watercolours are absolutely worth it. I found them on amazon for 19 US dollars, so yeah. Panonne I agree! Prima are my main, I own four sets haha
Old thread, but I'm glad for this discussion. The Prima colors are INTENSE. Gonna leave the Sakura aside after this video and continue buying more Prima!
I would suggest That You save your 20 dollars for paul ruben's 12 color kit and learn color theory.
I was curious about this a long time ago, but decided to get a small Sennelier set with 8 colors. Now that i look back at it, I am really glad I did.
+Rebecca Nelson Sennelier is good!
+Kari Thanks 🙌
I used to wonder whether the intensity of colours decreases for all brands whenever they are mixed to get secondary colours. Now I know why I felt like that! Being a beginner & not have had too much of an experience with other brands; I was under the impression that all water colours are dull...Thank you for clearing my doubts :-)
I have the 18 set and for me it’s ok to use it for small paintings / areas but they are way to streaky for me for large areas like sky oder galaxies
I have a 12 set and recently got the 30 set. I have nothing to complain about really, I just love these watercolors. I know that there are a lot of better brands out there and I've tried some better brands too, but I don't see a point in upgrading to something better because I really live these.
Use them up, then swap to better brands to see the difference
Teoh Yi Chie I also own kuretake, white nights, w&n cotman, van gogh, and a few tubes of Daniel Smith. My favourites are the kuretake and koi, I don't really understand the hype about daniel smith or other professional brands. I'm still pretty much a begginer but even if I was a pro I don't see why spending so much money on professional stuff is worth it
And btw, I really try to avoid toxic paints because I'm very paranoid about it and don't enjoy painting if the paints are toxic - so having some student grade paints that are safe to use really makes a difference for me.
That's more than enough paints for you to use for the time being. :-D
Teoh Yi Chie true xD I like to try different stuff though
Thanks :-)
mary birder you cant reccommend sakura koi over w&n when you compared a smaller set to sakura koi. Im sorry, but w&n cotman set is actually better cause w&n isnt chalky, its lightfast, quite vibrant and more. Sakura koi is a begginer set but i would start with winsor and newton cotman caus its actually better then sakura koi
Hmmm, in the tube versions, there is a Burnt Sienna instead of a Light Red.
Ah I see. Good to know!
Yes, I'm quite surprised too... I thought prima is chalkier than koi?
I like your character's side eye! The painting is fun!
+FreeSpokenOne Thanks 😁
I have the same set but with less colors, I really enjoy it! It's very easy to travel with and convenient.
i will say after buying and using the koi watercolor set i have found that (and this is most noticable on hot pressed watercolor paper) but some colors tend to stain the paper and wont lift for anything, I know im still new to watercolors but its a bit frustrating not being able to make a wash without the initial place where the color was put down sticks out like a sore thumb. just something to consider, it could be me but i have a very old set of artist loft watercolors that had very mininal (if any) staining compared to the koi set.
Sakura koi is my first set and I do really like the mixing wells!
I mainly bought it for the box lol..the arrangement seemed very attractive (with the sponge, waterbrush and palette and all) I put Holbein paints on the palette nowadays and use them mostly XD
But thanks a lot for comparing it with the Prima Marketing set, I've been eyeing those for a while now and it's such a nice set with such bright colours...and the application seems very smooth.
+Nox Moony wow thanks for clarification! Do u recommend have any watercolor brand I should buy? ( Excluding Winsor and Newton )
+DesiresAttackVirtues Thanks 😀
I watched this wanting to get the Sakura Koi but ended up buying the Prima. Thank you so much for your informative video!
+perfectpandemonium96 Thanks 😁
This was the second paint I used. Daler Rowney Aquafine was the first. I had a hard time learning how to mix colors with both. Using the paints straight from the pans was not a problem though.
For journaling, the Sakura is fine. But when I had my first experience with artist's grade watercolors, I gave away my Aquafine and Sakura paints.
Im so in love with this water colors❤
I love this brush you're using in many videos, it looks like it works really well.
That's the Nevskaya Palitra Watercolour Brush. ua-cam.com/video/bnzbJ8ws2U0/v-deo.html
+Natalie Gardner I like the box of Sakura but would have to recommend either Cotman or Prima Marketing because their paints are better.
You can wait for this new set...
www.winsornewton.com/row/shop/water-colour/water-colour-sets/cotman-brush-pen-set
I have this but with 32 colors
I love it hahaha
It doesn't fade as much as you guys say so thouggh
it may fade if exposed to direct sunlight but if its on your sketchbook its all good
you used the prima watercolor confections tropical, it is really pigmented and more intense because u doesn't use the classic one of the prima. prima has many variations of pallets in their confections. just saying. i have one 12 colors of the Sakura Koi and it is good for a beginner and for travelling. but thankyou for the video, it really helps =)
Love your reviews on paints. Very honest, informative and to the point. You always go an extra step to get your opinion and point across, like mixing and comparing. That’s why I keep coming back to your reviews. yes that noise was like fingernails down a chalkboard. Ouchy on the teeth n head. Haha.
Thanks :-)
I bought this set @ Hobby Lobby. I happen to love them for plien air work. Easy to use, packs in small bag. I have others, but I have no negative thing to say about them.
Thank you Teoh Yi Chie for an informative and useful channel. My opinion; "just say NO to any manufacture who will not give you access to pigment information." They may look pretty now....
I purchased a box set exactly like yours for maybe $10 at a flea market a couple years ago. I had the same impression. The watercolors seemed chalky. I would use them for little practice pieces, but not much more.
+Judith Meyer For $10 that's a good deal. The box can be reused!
Thank you, this was very helpful; I've never even heard of Prima watercolors. I'm definitely going to buy the Prima set instead of the Sakura.
I agree. I bought a bunch of cheaper water color sets to play around with until I can get my stuff out of storage and out of all the ones I used I liked sakurai Koi the least.
8:33 thank you! I've been looking all over for what colors are in this box. I never wrote them down.
Maybe I can use it for my trip(the Philippines)it's boring in the morning and I wanna draw and paint maybe for memory
They are student grade paints so I suppose they have a lot of fillers. Not really surprising because the price is so affordable!
Donna G yeah the box is all i want from this lmao
Love your book, such a wonderful idea if your in the business of reviews. Also I like the idea in general for other uses...thank you.
+Gail Gassen Book? Which book? I only have some ebooks. 😁
Ok ok I know I’m really late but I just found his channel
Well I don’t know if I should get this set as it is quite costly but in the comments section I see some people say that they can get it for under $20 but in where I live it is about $30-$100++ dollars I really don’t understand
The one Teoh recommended is the Prima Watercolor Confections Tropicals, which is currently on sale on Amazon for $27, not the titled paints. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the comparison. The Prima set looks like the better choice.
+Prismatic Prima Marketing is easier to mix without losing the vibrancy.
This was one of my 1st sets. Since.... I removed the horrible plastic palette with KOI paints & replaced it with half pans of Daniel Smith. I love the container and tray.. I use it for traveling. 😂
Im totaly agree with Prima they are awesome palletts !!!
Thank you Teoh always great videos. Happy Holidays from LA, Ca.🤗🤗
Thanka for the review I'm planning to buy one 😍😍😊
Thank you very much for all the videos you have been posting, they help me out a lot. 😭💕
You could also recommend the White Knights or Yarka watercolors, depending the location (The companies are very similar)
+Leodoz I have no experience with Yarka so I will recommend White Nights. You can find them on eBay with shipping.
Teoh Yi Chie Well, I could go to our nearest Deovir art store (still far, but better than online) and pick up a set of 12 for php 985.00 or about $20 when converted, but thanks for recommending it, I am actually currently using the 18 color set of sakura koi.
i got the sakura water color it work fine with me as long i dont add a lot of water like he did --- add little of water with paint it will be intense colors
please review the mungyo watercolors! :)
Ultramarine + Quinacridone rose = best VIOLET
The old holy grail (student/hobby) sets are now overshadowed by the cheap new introductions. I’m glad I didn’t get the Sakura Koi set way back when, I got a wheel (Koh I Noor knockoff) and some watercolor crayons and colored tapes instead. I enjoyed the wheel a lot.
For the price, Sakura Koi isn’t very competitive in quality anymore. W&N Cotman is the same price, or even cheaper.
Thank you for your kind answer. Manfred Knie, here from Vienna in Austria
Thanks....
Excellent review! Thank you!
i use the sakura koi paint , i am happy with them and I like the case
I have bought 2 of sakura koi water colours
You can get empty pans from Amazon USA or Jackson's Art
www.amazon.com/Palette-Plastic-Empty-half-pan/dp/B006FHORHE?tag=ttmus-20
www.jacksonsart.com/jackson-s-empty-plastic-half-pan?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=c9f0f895fb98ab9159f51fd0297e236d
first of all, thanks for the review.
well done and Yes I habe a question. How so you clean your watercolour boxes?
+Manfred Knie Just just put some water, clean it with an old brush, and clean it off with water again. You will not be able to clean off all the colours completely because some of the colours are staining and will go beneath the surface, even for plastics, such as Phthalo Blue or Phthalo Green.
I just relized this is the same one my friend has! so getting this!
+Batul Raza Cool 😀
Thanks Teoh. I don't recommend Sakura Koi watercolors. They are weakly pigmented and get very muddy very fast when mixing. The case isn't bad.
wow u know a lot about colors😮💕
I know this is a year old, but if you see my comment, can you tell me what the bits of sponge are for in field kits? There seems to be 2 in the Koi set. I have a piece of sea sponge in my W&N field set. I assumed my piece was for wetting the paper. But I'm not sure and the sponges in the Koi kit don't look as if they would do that, so I am thinking there may be another use.
I love your reviews by the way. Your sketching and painting is a delight to watch and I envy both of those skills a lot :-)
It's for drying the brush if there's too much water, or for cleaning the brush, taking colours off the brush.
Thank you! That makes more sense now. I always have a few sheets of kitchen paper towel in my bag to use for this so never thought about the sponge in that context!
I think you mixed purple-blue with orange-yellow to create brown-green...
I was thinking about getting this
+xoxFlossy xox Get the Prima Marketing set I mentioned. It's easier to mix without losing the intensity.
+Teoh Yi Chie thx
I've heard the sakura watercolors fade away over time is that true? Also would you recommend them? Its almost my birthday and i've been wanting to buy this watercolor set for a while now but after watching a lot of reviews on this set I'm having second thoughts... Should i get the sakura koi watercolors or the prang watercolors? Please answer
+NFandPONY productions You can get Sakura colours to start with, then save up for better quality paints in the future.
have you ever tried the sonnet watercolors from st. petersburg? i couldn't afford the white nights set so i went for the sonnet and i'm waiting for it to be delivered, would love if you had a review on them because i haven't seen any yet :)
I've not tried Sonnet before. Are they cheaper than White Nights? I thought White Nights is actually quite affordable for the amount of paint given in the 12 full pan set. I bought mine on eBay.
very true, the st. petersburg brand is really affordable! the sonnet set was 24 colors for $ 18 from ebay as well, which was a little nicer for my budget haha :) i'll definitely check out your white nights video!
i love both but i can't find prima here in the philippines but the sakura koi in thirty colors i think or 24 but they are instock in my province but since i already have the simbalion gouache i don't need prima but i really wanting it thanks teoh!
wayne cortez how much was the sakura koi?
I know that i'm already a year ago late but just in case that you still don't have the prima watercolors, you can order them from shopee :))
Hey. Can you, please, make a comparison video review for Cotman pen brush set and Van Gogh Watercolor Pocket Box Set. Boxes look similar, so what's inside?
+VIProach The quality for both is quite similar
Do they also feel chalky to the touch when dry if you run a finger across them? Have you had any of the color to flake or lift if you touch them? I've seen some artists on UA-cam to say that the colors come out more vibrant from tubes.
+James Barton They do feel chalky. I have not used the tubes before so I cannot compare.
Thanks. ^_^ I think I'll stay away from Sakura Koi then.
Can you also do a review on kohinoor watercolor 24 set the round compact cakes?
Maybe in the future.
Then we'll see.
i just bought the 12 pan set and thought the same thing >_< oh well, thanks for the comparisons!
+James You bought the Prima Marketing 12-pan set? Do you like it?
oh no, the Koi water color set. I was thinking of getting prima after your review on that, but this was cheaper. it's okay for trouble shooting some city-scapes, since i'm a beginner.
+James You can keep the box and add other watercolour brands in the future.
more motivation to paint more haha ^-^
The blue that you use for prima look more like a cobalt or maybe is my phone idn
i feel its kinda weird that u compare artist grade and student grade though, like its pretty obvious that artist grade have better colors, and ur dissing sakura a lot for being worse than artist grade while it is set as student grade watercolors
neither if these sets are artist grade though?
do you have any recommendations about student grade watercolor set in a pan ( or do they only come in tube form) that is reasonably price and won’t break the bank?
Try Prima Marketing watercolour sets
what kind of brush do you use? is it natural brush?
Hi! Thank you for interesting videos! Tell me your opinion: Sakura is better "White night" ? (I'm from Russia, I want Sakura to buy)).
White Nights is better, but some of their colours are opaque
Thank you very much!
Hey i have never really used watercolors but want to start do you think this is a good beginner set?
It's alright but there are better beginner sets. Check my recommendation at www.parkablogs.com/content/best-watercolor-sets-beginners
I would like to know if it is possible to remove the pans and replace with other pans or does the paint have to be removed from the well?
+elsa Grace The pan holders are smaller than standard size half pans, so you can replace the paints with pans. The only way is to dig out the colour and squeeze a new one in.
Over Sakurai koi and Alpha watercolour which would you prefer / think its better pls let me know
I've not used Alpha before. For beginners, you can get Sakura. It's not too expensive
Thanks !
Can you review Kuretake Gansai Tambi? 😁😁😁
+Edrei Marasigan Soon but not so soon. :-P
the primatek isn't available with the same prices up here in Canada....the only one's I have in the area is this and winsor...would you say this is better or worse than winsor cotmans??
+Quinn Park Winsor Newton Cotman is a good student grade paint. I think it's better than Sakura. If you cannot find it, look for Saint Petersburg White Nights 12 pan box set which is good too. Or the Prima Marketing watercolour sets, either Classic or Tropical.
thanks! unfortunately, where the cotman 12 set (the smaller pocket one, not the pocket plus) is about $21, the prima costs around $40 and the white nights is currently not found (this is amazon canada btw)
Between Sakura Koi and Winsor Newton Cotman, which one do you suggest for beginner?
+Lê Hà Minh Anh Cotman has a box that uses standard size watercolour pans so you can easily replace them or colours in the future. Quality wise, Cotman may be slightly better but difficult to tell really.
Thank you ^^ I think I'll go with Cotman
