You have a good eye and a really nice little tree 😎 Can't wait for an update! I kinda wanna see how that chop heals over since I've just ordered a dwarf pomegranate 😁
Wow Mike...I love this tree... Your Bonsai journey is really gaining momentum, you can tell from the confidence in your decisions...Last year you were still unsure of yourself and that is where I am now...After a lifetime of being around Bonsai, reading about Bonsai, killing many, many nursery bought Bonsai, I am now retired and found my way back to Bonsai...Some inspiration comes from Niles, some comes from Coffee and Bonsai with Tom and some comes from your channel because I relate to your videos...Thanks for doing such a great job and for sharing your journey...Sequim, WA...
I appreciate you saying that! And I'm really glad you can relate, as sometimes I feel like a bit of a rogue doing things the way I do. I told myself when I first started this channel that I wanted to show the good the bad and the ugly, mistakes and all. That's the best way to learn. I've watched some channels that show the polished version, and that's fine too. I just don't learn much from them.
Nice decision cutting the top portion off like that. Better now than down the road. I grew some from seed in 2022 from a regular pom I bought and they are doing good, the leaves actually arent much bigger than yours, though the internodes are a bit longer as well. Got the idea from Ian at Back Garden Bonsai since his had small leaves from a regular pom. I am trying a twisted trunk fusion with a few seedlings and a clump with about 5. Pomegranate seem to fuse well it seems, mine began sticking to eachother after like 4 months.
Well that sounds pretty cool actually! I've never tried to grow any from seed but I did see Ian's in his looked pretty cool and easy to grow from what he was saying. I need to do a little more experimenting with these and see how well they take to things like fusions and that sort of thing. He's got that one clump style that looks pretty cool too
Thank you! This particular shop was a long time coming and I've been putting it off forever. Now I just got to make it through the awkward stage but eventually it'll look cool again
I also started a bunch in 22. Do yours have smaller leaves or are they large? Mine seem to have relatively small leaves given it was from a large pomegranate.
This is pretty much the only one I've had so I'm not totally sure. Seems like these start off big, then as the leaves mature over the season they get smaller and darker
@BonsaiBoise I think they are easy to germinate. I got one, and it dried out completely b4 I got around to planting them, and I still got them to work.
I thought about the windswept approach but I have a ficus that I'm doing that with and it's actually kind of a pain in the butt to maintain lol. You're basically working against nature the whole time because they keep wanting to grow straight up. But they do look cool!
i've got loads of 2 or 3 year old pomegranate seedlings but no flowers yet. I have one that must've been a rooted cutting I believe I bought from Greenwood Bonsai and it has the most amazing doubled, salmon-pink flowers
This is quickly becoming one of my favorites too! I ask myself, if there were a fire and I could only grab a few trees, which would I grab? This is always in my top 4 or 5.
Yeah its the right decitions you made...hard but as you said, its going to be better. Good luck with that top cutting. Its got the beginnings of a good bonsai. Question....with the original tree...before the chop, why did you have all the growth on only one side...?
Nice one. An elegant, happy tree.
Thank you!

I'm digging your choices here!

Nice chops, Toy
I’m diggin how you’re developing it

I started a bunch of these from seed last year.

@DeciduousSnurb mine are in a small pot right now and need to be separated. The leaves on mine are small as well and came from a store bought fruit.
This is pretty much the only one I've had so I'm not totally sure. Seems like these start off big, then as the leaves mature over the season they get smaller and darker
I just bought some pomegranate fruit last night after posting this so I'm going to try that too
@BonsaiBoise I think they are easy to germinate. I got one, and it dried out completely b4 I got around to planting them, and I still got them to work.
Good but I would've gone to the last branch and made a wind swept but now that I look at it great decision you really know what to do

@@BonsaiBoise Yeah I guess you're right!
Tough decision to get rid off the fruit bearing branch but absolutely the right one👍
Thanks!

@@stormdrifter7904 Interesting! I guess I didn't realize the different varieties had different color flowers!
Pomegranate bonsai are my favorites

@@fredmanfv Thanks! And I'm not really sure. It just kind of evolved that way.
@@BonsaiBoise Haha...yeah the tree decides
I air layered the top of my pomegranate bonsai. It ended up making a nicer tree than the one I left below.
I thought about doing that too! I was 50/50 on that versus doing the chop. The urge hit me to just do the chop so I just went with it
Do these ever get bushy ? Every pomegranate I've seen is sparse...🤔🤔
Sort of. I think the bushiest I've ever seen mine is that clip from about April. (If you call that bushy)
