    I'm in construction. I started watching this video thinking it's going to be a bunch of gimmicks. Every one of those things is stuff I use literally daily. The air quality tester alone makes it worth it's price. The only issue I would have with that is they have to be calibrated a lot.

    • @TheMrMobile
      @TheMrMobile  7 років тому +90

      I was actually hoping some of you guys/gals would chime in as I too wondered about the "gimmick" argument. Thanks for your perspective.

      I too would like to test that. I don't work in construction, but as an industrial cleaner where we also have ammonia (for our freezers). So would be awesome to test this feature out

      MrMobile [Michael Fisher] the good thing here is cat has plenty of money to invest even if it doesn't do well. So hopefully they refine it. Just because I'm in construction doesn't mean I want to carry a brick in my pocket! 😁

      I just started a new trucking job hauling hazardous liquids. If the air quality meter is reliable enough (I don't handle anything acutely toxic requiring precise monitoring), that would be cool to have. The thermal camera would also be useful to look over my truck to spot irregularities like a brake hanging up or even a cylinder not firing right.

    • @Ahmed4th
      @Ahmed4th 7 років тому +1

      I’m also looking forward for this phone’s review. I work as an industrial mechanic, and we deal with a lot of rotating machines that fails if temperature appeared due to friction, so the camera on this phone would be very helpful in quickly determining which part is failing without the need to bring other big equipment and do an analysis. The air sensor would also be helpful since different gases could exist in the work area (H2S, CO2, etc.) Of course I would still carry my T-40 with me, but having this feature would still be nice to have.

      James W it'd be nice if it used a snapdragon 660 or something but it's not really the point. The sensors in this phone justify the price.

      i disagree, I mean, for 1k give the sd 660 at least.

    • @mrkiky

      I don't like the fact that they haven't upgraded the thermal camera resolution. From what I see, it seems to be the very low 80x60 that was on the S60. I really dislike this since they already have way better sensors since a year ago. Guess I'll just wait for the S70.

    This is a phone for contractors or that companies will buy for their maintenance/facilities people, and it will be invaluable. Not a purchase for your average cubicle dweller.
    But it's great to see companies innovating and doing what smartphones have always done best; combining multiple different items you used to buy into one, well thought out and reasonably usable device at a fairly decent price. Now instead of having a belt full of different gadgets (smartphone, laser level, measuring tape, studfinder, heat sensor, air quality gauge, etc), you now have just the smartphone that does that, and have the added benefit of a smartphone that can survive in the rough, dirty and nasty conditions that these workers find themselves in every day, while helping to keep them safe while they do it (enclosed spaces have a real problem with building up toxic gases, hence the meter).
    For all that it does, $1K is a steal.

    • @kornkernel2232
      @kornkernel2232 7 років тому +5

      So true! This is what really the smartphone innovation is like, the convergence of different useful applications into a single cohesive package. The price truly worths it for people who are in the market.

    I'm a Deck Officer in the Merchant Navy, I could use that phone for SAR with the FLIR, use the Atmosphere detector for Enclosed Space entry & the range finder for giving distances from the Aft Mooring Deck during departures/arrival from/to the dock. Only issue is calibration for the Atmosphere detector. I will buy.

    Ive been using the previous S60 for the past year, its a good phone, not the most rugged, but definately above average. I work engineering and construction in oil & gas, would use most of the functions almost daily, the lasers 10 meter limit is a little short though :) will definatley upgrade when prices come down to their ~$600 bracket

    • @tams805

      You need to engage them to make it waterproof.

    • @rrwakc
      @rrwakc 6 років тому

      it is already waterproof, but rated only to 2m. If you engage them it is rated to 5m depth and prevents fine dust(like quartz) from entering speaker hole. Basically you only use it when you know you will get real wet or when your friends play with the switches if you leave it on the table.
      But S60 is also the first smartphone that lasted me over a year, without destroying it(so upgrade in thoughtless from Xperia Go CAT B15 and S50)
      And having thermal camera changes your mentality the same as going from having separate cameras havering it always with you. You think something is behaving a little weird, take a thermal photo and check again in a few days or the fact that you can see in a second short circuit on a circuit board or if the floor heating was installed correctly and doen't have dark spots.

    You all say that the thermal camera is upgraded with a better resolution of 160x120 pixels. Looking at CAT site and the original manual is says that is ONLY upgaded at the thermal range up to 400c and keep the same resolution of 80x60 as the S60!

  • @APPARATVS
    @APPARATVS 5 років тому

    I own this myself and it's very handy even for someone not in the construction business. I found the Thermal Imaging to be very useful in monitoring the temp of my fridge because it was not working correctly. The measurement tool is good, but not reliable as it needs the camera to work with it. As it would not focus correctly in low lighting, it would give inaccurate readings. In optimum lighting conditions, it's was pretty spot on.
    I also contacted CAT and they confirmed that Android Pie is on it's way in the third quarter of 2019 for this phone.

    Didn't take any real damage besides bumps in the metal frame around the edge and in general take abuse extremely well.
    Only downside is the glass on the FLIR camera broke when i dropped on a gravel drive way, but it still works perfectly.

    I feel that the air quality sensor could be used in more mainstream devices as it can be useful to warn of potential hazardous fumes in the area it is in
    Useful to help curb CO poisoning (though maybe not as good as a CO detector) or in places known to have bad air quality, alongside construction

    I know my Cat S60 has held up through horrid abuse over the past couple years. The Flir on it has come in handy more often than I would have expected. As general facility maintenance is one of my gigs, I can see the digital laser coming in handy. Air quality would be neat but I doubt I'd need it more than once or twice a year. If this one is as rugged as the S60, then I'm sold.

    I own the S60. Been a great phone, but there are some more smartphoney issues I hope Cat works out with this phone before release:
    - The regular camera is rubbish unless held perfectly still. I believe this is a software issue for the most part because it got worse at one point
    - The battery has severely degraded with time. I once upon a time got a solid two days use from it, which is impressive when you're teathering for internet etc... but now it's stretching one. I must say though, the battery is easily replaceable if I could get my hands on one, so props for using screws on the back of the phone
    - The GPS no longer works reliably. This is once again a software problem that is just such a let down. Worked one day, software update and now it no longer does. This is same and documented with a heap of Cat users so it's clearly something they've done
    - Ironically, the build quality of the phone isn't that great. While the function is fine and it is certainly as durable as they make it sound (I have accidentally dropped a wrench directly on the screen without damage), things like the port covers have some apart and the microphone grill.
    Considering the phone it offers for the price ON TOP of all the features, it's pretty good, but unless they've fixed this type of issue and make an ongoing commitment to the software, I unfortunately think I will have to take my money elsewhere. I was really rooting for Cat and appreciate them doing it different!

    I don't think the MIL STD-810G rating really means much. The V20 has it, and the camera glass can break when the LED is lit too long.

    • @TheMrMobile

      This is a fair point. MIL-STD 810G is such a huge blanket specification and manufacturers can apparently use their own criteria when "certifying" to it. For it's part, CAT/Bullitt did say that they tested it to 1.8m concrete drops and then retested for IP68 again afterward. So they're pretty confident in this design.

      MrMobile [Michael Fisher] yeah, i think that's because manufacturers don't certify their phone with it, it's too broad.

      I have the V20, and the camera glass breaking was never a problem. It happened to very few phones, just like any other defect could. Even less reports showed a pic of the apparent breaks, and those that did showed an obvious point of impact.
      I do agree that the 810G spec is too broad and unreliable for consumer use (though I thought that was for drops onto plywood over concrete, not to concrete directly), but interesting to see that they tested again for the IP rating after that.

      I managed to chip the screen on my S60 last year, by throwing it hard out of a car window, onto ancient Neapolitan paving flags, all irregular stone. I was shocked as I'd treated it like crap for months knowing it was bombproof.
      Bullit Group replaced it instantly without asking questions.

    Finally, a new phone that has some decent features that are more about usability than showing off and trying to look good.
    I'm not sure if you're camera supports 50fps video, but it would be a lot nicer if you shot at 50fps next time you're filming in Europe. The flicker is rather bad.

    • @jayraoanti-agency

      The refresh rate of the camera is not the same as the refresh rate of the display + PWM (pulse-width modulation) which is used to lower the brightness if it is on max brightness his camera would overexpose it probably.

      If you're talking about the full screen flicker, it's a result of my camera not being calibrated for Europe's 50Hz fixtures.

    Mr. Mobile of the Borg knows that a good FLIR alone cost more than this phone. This one looks like it has a wide field so it appears like a really good deal! The laser looks like less practical than a good hilti though (you need to put the device in one of the edge of the room or on the floor so command has to be well placed)

    I figured they would have put the laser rangefinder at the top of the phone. It's too bad it only works to 10 meters, 30m I think is minimum for usefulness. It's cool though, thanks for sharing!

      There are plenty of rugged phones out there. This just gets all those extra features for the people who need them. Most won't need this, although I guess you *could* find the features useful if you're in a pinch.
