I have been to a bad tuner! the next week I bought my hp tuner and started learning myself.

It takes a long time to learn the ecu and the software, so you need a specialized tuner and it can still take a lot work to get you dialed in.

I had my GTO tuned by the best!! Russ Kemp of Autolab in Regina Sask. I asked him why he didn't have a eddy current dyno and he said he didn't need one and he was right. You might know of his Russ K idle configuration!!

Ive had potential customers assume im a crap tuner because im not willing to learn a new piece of software. So hard for the average guy to understand its like asking to learn another language when given a platform thats foreign.

I like #5 on your list about not being cocky and a "know it all" I had my car tuned by a guy that actually has his own tuning school, he told me he was the best in the business and that he's tuned thousands of cars made me feel i was getting the best he strapped my car to dyno and did 2 pulls and said the car was good to go. ive had drivabiity issues ever since and he has since said that he no longer supports gen 3 platform. i bought my own hp tuners and have talked with multiple other tuners since and that said tuner didnt even put in correct fuel injector data nor did he do any VE tuning at all, makes me feel bad by how many people are getting hosed by this guys "tuning school"

      Thanks!
Really hope you guys can do it one day. I know there's alot of guys wondering about the NGC3 stuff especially for the 04-05 N SRT-4'S
There's everything on the GM and LS stuff but nothing for the older dodge side...

NGC3s are similar to the NGC4 with some of the tables missing. I have tuned a few of the SRT4s and the dodge tuner course though focused on the hemi platform will get you headed the right direction. The computers use similar logic.

@@christopherward3499 I've been tuning the platform for a few years. Just seeing if there's any extra little tricks for a few things, or see how other people use HPT on the older dodge ECU's.

A good tuner is gonna dedicate time to your vehicle, if he does 4 pulls on a dyno and call its good, run away. A good tuner is gonna make your car run good, if it can not start like stock, then its not a good tune.

For point three - I assume you mean familiarity with the vehicle's ECU, rather than vehicle specific? By that, I mean some modern systems have the parameters so inter-woven that they may be compensating for changes in one map on others, and unless one is familiar with exactly where the changes should be made, one may end up down the rabbit hole?
Point five can apply to the 'tuners' who 'know' what the AFR/lambda should be for every engine, usually it is the same number, eg 12:1 for NA, 10.5: for forced induction - rather than tuning to what the engine actually needs.
There was one HUGE point you missed, though, in my opinion.
The 'tuner'should TALK TO YOU! (S)he should be asking about the vehicle's history; the modifications that have been made; how the vehicle is to be used; what you expect from the 'tune'; etc. For example, the engine may have been bought second hand with no known history and already be compromised by abuse; it may be in need of a full service; it may be internally stock but have bolt-ons that could easily overstress the internals; if it is just to be used for a 1/4 mile run it will have little heat build up compared to towing up a steep incline at altitude and so have differing charge temp's; a drag engine may be expected to be stripped and rebuilt quite frequently, or it may be acceptable to have the occassional problem but someone else may want something with turn-key reliability that will last 100+ thousand miles with normal servicing.
You may also wish to talk to the 'tuner'about their insurance cover if they make a mistake, the car falls off the rollers, etc - accidents do happen and you should be aware of that.
