I have watched a lot of videos on kite surfing this year as Im new to the sport and on my 6th lesson and I have to say Kite-Surf-College Tutorials are the closest you will get to actually having lessons which is a MUST for this sport. Thank you for your efforts in make these tutorials.

Agree with everything except for it's a "MUST" to have lessons. With so many UA-cam tutorials, you really don't need lessons if you do your research and better to spend that money on gear. Greetings.

Great video with analysis. I have developed for myself a pre-launch very quick checklist (2 second) that I am using all the time and it helps me to avoid silly mistake. It's spelled KITE and it's symbolic.
K is for checking (K)Quick Release, put my hand on it to know where it is and which direction to eject, so I don't have to find it.
I is for checking the LINES, straight, no twist and correctly hooked
T is for checking the SafeTy leash for being correctly hooked up
E is for checking the Environment, wind, people, other kiters, hard obstacles on land, etc.
It takes me 2 seconds to check while the launcher helper is holding the kite, since I use my hand to run through the list. I have stopped few mishaps before they happened with this checklist. I just post it here so you can develop your own checklist and FWIW

I love this video. I am nearly 50 years and Kite for 3 years and consider myselve unexperienced. I witnessed a very nasty Kitemare from an unexperienced young kiter while launchingnhis Kite way to coureagous. We had to pull his tongue out of his throat to avoid he would suffocate, his cheekboan and nose were broken and he was unconcious for nearly 5 minutes. He is alright now. However it made us extra aware of the fact that launching a Kite is no joke and must be taken utterly serious. It is very important to check your lines and surroundings under every condition, and take your time.

These videos do make you aware of the risks and the way you should always use the safety steps. Rearrange your safety so it fully releases kite if you pull it. Just letting go of the bar will stop 80-90% of the power. If this doesn’t work something Is f’d up and the first release won’t do anything. Your kite is not worth your life

I had a close call in Boracay early this year due to the tangled powerline. (I was in a hurry to go out to save/help my windsurfer friend who was stuck in the rip currents where coral reeves were sharp and shallow). I was able to release the leash within 2 seconds when I realized I was in trouble although I got lifted about 3-4 ft in the air. Other than my ego, I did not get hurt. People will always think that something like this will happen only to other people until it happens to you.. (Thank you so much for the important info!!)

Thanks a lot for putting this up. I've been kiting since 2000 and was lucky to never have had an accident or even dangerous situation. I came from paragliding where neglect can be fatal. Check your material, check your lines, let yourself help by others on the beach. Admittedly not every beach offers helping hands especially in over commercialized spots it is sometimes hard to find someone helping you start your kite. I've seen people with jet skies on the beach where a kiter was kilometers away from the beach and going offshore when asking them they pretended to see nothing. When pointing to the fact that they are refusing their duty to help they got a little nervous and started the engines. Even before starting your session make sure that someone could take care of you if things go south.

Would also like to see one on launching with the kite too far upwind. I've seen so many new kiters have kites rolling over other kites and people. Before giving a thumbs up make sure the kite isn't fluttering from being underpowered. The kite should be steerable and literally trying to launch out of the launchers hand.

Hello Fartssmellgood. It's certainly scary when your kite doesn't behave as normal. It's happened to me before, of course. I had a bridle wrap itself around a valve as the launcher picked up the kite. A bit harder to spot, but a similar situation. Thanks for your great FPV kiting videos, some good stuff for people to learn from:

I recently experienced something quite similar to Kitemare IV in this video. However, I’m fairly certain that the control line was not wrapped around the handle. I believe the root cause was an inexperienced launch helper who didnt know correct wind window position and I didn’t have enough experience to correct them. I think they were too deep in the wind window. The kite took off quickly and I didn’t counter steer quickly enough. The kite went across the wind window and straight down into bushes and trees. Thankfully no one was hurt and the kite was not damaged. Both were small miracles. Only my pride was damaged but I have been watching every video possible to better prepare me for the unexpected. You can’t learn enough! Thanks for this very helpful video! FYI - there are some great instructional videos out there about the “ death loop” that everyone should watch.

    • @MasterG85
      @MasterG85 5 років тому

You know that inexperienced launch helper should never be a problem. You, as the experienced kiter have to make sure that the launch position of the kite is correct. Otherwise you have to move or direct the launcher, until the position is correct and then give the launch signal to the helper. Why should a random launcher guy know the correct posititioning of the kite?!

I’m lucky to be alive. This is a dangerous sport at times and kiting within your capability to a important. But most important of all is learning safety routines and practicing ejecting the chicken loop and leash eject multiple times so that their use becomes second nature. Thank you so much for this fantastic video. You’ve given the kiting world plenty of tips which are useful to the experienced kite surfer as well as the newbie. Look forward to the next one.

This is a great video. In your next one I suggest adding what happens (and what to do) with a death loop on water. It's similar to the last one you explained in this video, but not with the bar stuck in the hook but the lines twisted around the bar which prevents an eject with the safety.
There is another video os this on youtube already by someone else, but some deeper analysis and more content like this will help prevent a lot of accidents, and possibly serious injuries or death.

I want to add a bit from myself:
    1) always make an assisted launch (unassisted are only for relaunches or real force-majoire occasions!)
    2) hook your chicken loop only after you are sure all lines are untwisted and so on (you know that situations when somebody are going for the next session, with lines and bar laying on the beach. Don't hook in early - check your lines holding your chicken loop in your hand and than hook in!)
    3) unhook as soon as your kite was catched by your friend (never stay hooked in when your kite is laying on the beach - wind can launch your kite in some occasions)

Great video, I love your content it’s awesome.
    I have had a few...
I had a line come undone at beach launch
Chicken loop come off bending over to pick up board
    Lines twisted at self launch...
Hitting the beach trying to get out with onshore wind
All horrible experiences with luck escapes
