- This Volvo S60 is not an "R" model, though it appears to be one in many ways. It has a turbocharged 5-cylinder engine driving the front wheels, and lots of go-fast bits, stop quick bits, and go round corner bits. It's an oddball in every sense of the word, it goes fast, and makes all the right sounds. We love it.

5-cylinders sound so fucking good.
And if you check out engine animations, when an inline-5 is cranking the cylinders go up and down in a perfect wave motion. In a V10 its dual offset wave patterns. Very cool. Very smooth looking.

No man it sounds pretty crispy but nothing beats a M5 V10 with an exhaust or look up for 2007-2009 subaru legacy 3.0r with an exhaust the sound awesome third comes the Volvo for a sedan

+Drift Review The Audi Quattro was a 5 cylinder. Volvo borrowed Audi's idea, set it up as a transverse FWD configuration and made the Volvo 850 around it. This S60 has the same engine, but of course modernized.
5-cyls have the same firing order as a V10, so you get a similar sound, but it's much cheaper to produce. Hence the nickname "the poor man's V10".

Was disappointed when Taylor's first shoot was a no-go, but that gave us some more time to send parts out to him! Wheels, suspension bits and few other parts from us here at EuroSport Tuning :) Great review Matt!
The giggles that come out of Matt whenever the car makes a cool noise are fantastic. Even while the guy is talking, Matt is just giggling to himself with joy. I love it.

People giving him shit for the front lip, I actually kinda like it. Its not subtle by any means but I get a almost touring car feel from it. And really, who gives a damn what it looks like when those sounds are coming from that car. My GOD does that thing sound good! Audi quattro mixed with the turbo sounds of jdm goodness! That is the nicest looking Volvos I have seen, very well done.
Matt your GF has a V60 R-Design with Polestar tune. That is different than the actual V60 Polestar, which had more go fast bits. It also only comes in Rebel Blue, White, Silver, and Black.

+babbaslol I've never seen a V60 R-Design without the Polestar tune. All of this is besides the point. Calling that car a Polestar is wrong. Someone wouldn't want to call a WRX an STI would they. They are different cars. The real Polestar car has more power (via a different turbo and active exhaust), has a much better suspension with Ohlins, has a retuned transmission, bigger brakes, different appearance package, different interior with Alcantara, etc.

I love my S40 T5 AWD, these are really nice underrated cars (don't tune for big power though, just boost response and torque, the thin cylinder walls on these blocks aren't ideal for big power). My S40 is maybe putting out 320 at the crank max but it looks bone stock and is a real sleeper.

+Sepehr Naserkhaki Here in Sweden people run these engines at 700+ all the time. You insert milled steel rods inbetween the cylinder wall and the block wall. They can take upwards of 1000 engine HP but it's not really streetable at all and quite unreliable at that level.

Nitten yeah, I meant in a street-able reliable application with a stock block (cause at that point you might want to look into a different platform if all you want is performance, this is my one and only car you see)
rudkacka Yeah, and I personally prefer Haldex to Quattro and 4matic...Haldex just feels like a FWD car without the torque steer and better traction

Props from an R owner... and those IPD sways were quite possibly the best mod you could do with the car IMO. P.S., my angle gear is holding out fine after 150k. I've had the car since new... very few hard launches and mine is an '07 which seem to be less problematic than the earlier R's. Nothing beats the sound of a nicely tuned 5 cylinder, well short of a nicely tuned Ferrari perhaps. ;)

I would be interested to see your take on an S60R Matt, though as you said you have driven one before. Then again I imagine everyone else wants to see their car in a video as much as I do, and it's a bit much to expect you to do videos of two such similar cars when there's so much variety out there to chose from. What are your thoughts on the S60R compared to something like an S4? I drove a B8 S4 and liked it more than my S60R in a lot of respects, but the steering didn't seem as sharp and the engine note was much quieter and less interesting.

Bob Dole its not about the Volvo "hype" its about that beautiful majestic engine tone coming from those 5 cylinder engines they're provably the best sounding engine in the world in my opinion it has the scream of a v12/v6 but also has that deep rumble of a v8/v10

@@razerone49 I have a 320whp car which is rwd previously on comfort tread and it just spins now I have sport tread which is almost at the limit and it grips Continental Lux tires to continental sport tires and both tires cost the same brand new and the difference is night and day
To reply to "if you can convert to all-wheel drive", asked at 07:13, actually you can. My mechanic did it to his T5. The S60/V70's were mostly the same car, so it's fairly easy to swap parts around.

5 cylinders sounds like viper v10's to me and vice versa. I think that they sound similar because the viper uses a 90 degree v10(instead of a proper 72 degree) and thus needs the balance shafts to work properly just like 5 cyl. Just a theory of mine please dont kill me.

this is also a popular swap into rwd cars,,, you can buy prefabbed custom mounts to mount The T5 front to back, in say, a Volvo 740/940 :-)
