Nice review, looks like a nice reader. But the locked-in nature of the book stores are a big problem - which is why as a super wired-in tech-head, I still prefer physical formats for media.

Stating that this device is not for beginners or new users is foolish and a very bad advice. Especially new users should be starting with device that gives them the best reading experience, not the cheapest. Imagine someone never tried Japanese food. Would you recommend to that person to try the cheapest sushi to discover if he/she likes it? Such experience can turn someone off Japanese food forever.
Absolutely correct sir. I just recently purchased my first ever e reader. I only have 2 options since i have limited budget. Buy a base models from kindle/ kobo/ questionable brand from china, or buy a used more premium e reader. And i have to tell you, I regret nothing going for the latter one.

Bought it 10 days ago. It's my fourth Kobo, so you can say i'm a fanboy. I honostly can say this version blows the other Kobo's right out of the water. The overall reading experience is mindblowing. In my opinion this is the best size for an easy read. The ajustable backlight is a must. At first a had to get over the orange screen, but now i cannot live without out. A premium device that will give countless hours of reading pleasures for the one who buys it.

I wish this had a colored e-ink display for things like comics.
I read a lot books. I use my iPad for all my reading. I notice that my eyes are always strained. This Kobo should alleviate that.

This is exactly the sort of stuff I was thinking of recently in the last week or so... and Voila! a review for an eBook reader on Hardware Canucks. I often buy books in the $20-50 price range and to read them on something that is waterproof and weighs 200 grams would be a dream. Compared to finding a light source that is , finding a comfortable sitting position and relaxing my brain enough to read on some topics that require quite intensive thinking and/or are dry (philosophy/heavy science/sociology)... this is a much better option. I hope this sort of stuff never goes away, and that includes the offering of alternative screen designs/engineering over all the "traditional" blue light crap that enters a person's life, or more critically, certain types of people's lives.
E Readers aren't really my thing, but for some reason I really want this lol. It just looks like a nice thing to have on a coffee table. Great stuff!

That's the point. Kindle is too small.
It doesn't have the same refreshrate.
This e-reader has automatic lighting adjustement. So in the dark it get's an orange glow, because it filters out the blue light. The 7.8 inch screen is very easy to read, the total weight of the e-reader is only 220 grams.
My opinion is that the e-reader is very expensive, but for the fanatic reader it's the one to have.
I'm using this thing for a month now and couldn't do without it.
I've had a KOBO-Glo for five years and it works as smoothly as ever, and I must say I use it a lot. It is VERY GOOD QUALITY. I am curious about Kobo Aura...I might try it.
Would have been nice if you compared to the Kindle Oasis, that seems like the main competition for something like this.
So much better then Kindle. Half the price, better features twice as much memory. Kobo H20 edition 2 is amazing and even cheaper. Any Kobo can get books from Canadian libraries and you can't with Kindle. How can people miss this point?
My wife has an Oasis, I use the Aura One, so we have compared notes. I would say that the Oasis feels slightly more premium than the Aura does, but the Aura's larger screen is a huge bonus for me. It also makes PDFs easier to read. And I really appreciate the night shift option.
I find kobo aura one the best ereader we have in the market today. The premium features like the comfort light and its size (7.8 inches) make the difference among other kobo models. Also, the side loading feature and multiple format support makes it more valuable than a kindle.
I bought an Aura One and it had quite few issues: battery drain (over night), phantom touches and the light sensor constantly adjusting the brightness. Also, it is not recognised by any of my Windows 10 devices.I returned it for an exchange which had all the same issues.Turns out there s a firmware update coming that is supposed to address this (great QA, Kobo!), so if you plan tyo purchase you might want to check the forums before parting with your hard earned.
i have a kindle simply because amazon's store/ecosystem is so good.
- easily upload of personal docs (useful for webserials) to kindle cloud with page sync across devices with a simple right click from a pc.
- by far the best store in range
- accessible on every single device with page sync.
- easily accessible to buy in australia (probably would have to get a kobo reader shipped in)
downsides is that the device is mediocre in every way
Still waiting for the day where e readers properly support comics colours and all. THEN I will buy one.
Not to mention the loading and rendering of new pages takes too long. I have a kobo glo HD and ut works well, but it is not ideal for quickly flipping through a book or comic.
I double this. Using e-readers since about 2008 i can only recommend to switch to something like an ipad[or a decent android/win tablet, which, i believe do exist] to read comics and/or heavy pdfs. Not only color or a refreshing rate can be issue but searching, zooming or even fliping pages too (but i need to mention that low-end tablets often also stumble at this).
So every task should get its own instrument. E-Readers are for fiction books only.
The iPad Pro 9.7" has a new type of screen with a feature called True Tone that mimics the ambient light of the room you are in. Makes the screen very easy to look at for long periods of time. I haven't picked up my e-reader since I got it.
I actually might consider the ipad pro 9.7 then. I have an ipad 4 right now and it's too heavy to bring around with me.

You didn't address if its possible to download library books through a USB connection or whether it can only be done through WIFI
I will stick with my Kobo Mini. Perfect size for me. Always on the go so it is easier to carry around with me.
I have a Kobo Mini, a Kobo Aura H20 (gave to my wife) and a Kobo Aura One. The Mini is for out and about. The Aura One is My Precioussss. :-)
I’ve been an ereader fan for years, and all of those have been Kindle. However, on Wednesday my Aura One arrives and I’ll be saying goodbye to Kindle.
The features, storage, size, resolution, lighting system and waterproofing are awesome, but the direct Overdrive connectivity is a game changer for me. And since Overdrive is owned by Kobo, the future looks pretty good there. Thanks for the great review

I like the Kindle 5 with physical buttons. It's so basic & small, fits well in a case so I bring it with me everywhere. This looks alright, but I feel like the benefit of an e reader is that it's so simple and cheap to begin with. That screen at night is nice tho!

It makes sense to get a ereader bundled with Android like Onyx BOOX or Boyue T62. Then you can load the Amazon Kindle app and have some flexibility with Calibre.

anyone that has a Amazon account already should always buy the kindel. best selection, already own it, and no extra charges. however, i personally never owned one from this company.
i think you missed the best part about e-readers. its that the pixels only have on or off. its done in a way that once it goes dark it dosent take any power to read that page. it only takes power to change what the page says. thats why the standerd battery life, since the first kindle came out, is always a month. (at reading an hour per day or something)
ive charged my old kindle, unpluged it one day, came back a month later wanting to read something, and it was at about 70%. ive always been out of town for a week and read 4-5 hours per night and never had to charge it.
e-readers are awsome. but getting a used older kindle for 40 bucks or so (prolly with a case) is just as good as this is.
I have the Kobo touch with a mircoSD card but no back-light. I was originally going to get an upgrade but saw there's no point if there's isn't expandable storage
the kobo bookstore isn't that much of a problem for users living in the Netherlands (and maybe surrounding country's) a company named Bol in the Netherlands has allied with kobo so you can buy books from there too which has as many books as amazon I guess
If I didn't have Kindle Voyage, this one would be a dream, because of bigger screen for pdfs. And direct epub format support, not needing calibre converting to azw3.
I don't get people who turn their e-readers glow light on high. Like, I thought the point of eink was it's natural screen look with no uncomfortable light shining in your eyes? If you turn on your glow light so high your ereader loses it's natural screen look, you should just get a tablet, like honestly, then the screens look the same. I understand you need some light to see the screen at night, but otherwise it's obsessive.
I personally use a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" (2013 version) for both reading and videos from time to time.
Do previous books on your old kobo device transfer over? My mom uses the old one and maybe the family can upgrade her for her birthday!
If you rotate your phone to landscape it's the same size as the width of most books.
I just got a Kobo Aura One with 32 GB storage, it's amazing to read on and I can store a lot of comics/manga on it :)

Sounds like it's a competitor to Amazon's Voyage at $199 and their new Oasis at $289.99. I thought about the Kobo but just couldn't do it because I have prime and Amazon is a beast in that market. Plus Amazon owns Comixology now and all the comics I buy on Amazon I can read on my Paperwhite and in Comixology apps. If I was to pay that price for an e-reader I would want at least basic color support. I know they have displays that do it so I'm not sure why nobody has tried to release one yet.
nice review but i still prefer my kindle with buttons, i feel the change of pages more quicker than the ones with touchescreen, and when i saw how slow the Kobo's page turning was i felt unconfortable.
Jeez you forgot it has Overdrive and with Kobo you can load books from libraries in Canada something you can't do with Kindle.

I am sacrificing only water resistance, but I have also physical buttons which are great to use in some holding positions, can listen music with earphones(which I do not use) and costs $100 less.
I never tried read comics - I do not like them.

CBR/CBZ is an exciting addition, but the lack of colour throws shade on the achievement.
You should as well try to compare this one with other e-readers in the price range. And i mean really compare, not on the tech specs or side-by-side, but try to use them.
There are so many things which are hidden. Most viable are usability and infrastructure.
The only two things which are looking to be interesting are water resistance and color themperature.
The big screen is not needed to read usual books, it is only viable when reeding pdf's and comics. But for those the rendering time must be much lesser.
The formats - you are bent to read mostly books from the store. Those books are already compatible. If you are going to sideload some books, so there are plenty of converters out there. Almost every book management software have at least usual converters imlemented. And if you are going to sideload, you are need some of managing software to get your books organized.
What i am missing are the physical buttons and may be wight reducing. This are very important parameters. Every possibility to drop the reader on the floor is a high risk to instantly loose 200$, so you need a secure grip on that thing. If you want to operate the reader (swap pages) with one hand, you are sacrificing this grip if there are no buttons.
The software part of the reader is often underestimated. In my expirience all those cool features kobo has are poorly implemented. The reader just don't work smoothly enough. The battary get drained regardless of usage. The light can't really be set off. The touchscreen might sometimes ignore the gestes.
I hope KOBO got better in last few years but back then it was a big issue.
All rounded up i'd rather would buy a costly amazon oasis for fiction books %AND% an ipad for color and scientific pdf's then get myself this one.

Having bought a lot in Amazon I switched to Kobo Aura H2O and I really like it. Amazon ecosystem is a lot better and comprehensive, but you can use Calibre or Epubor to overcome this (paying a little for Digital Rights removing capability, not breaking law though and not abandoning Amazon ebooks offer)
I love my Kobo H2O so not likely to switch up any time soon but eventually it will die and depending on what's available at the time, this could be high on my list.
Imagine if we could have just had all of out school textbooks on one of these, no more back problems from carrying several Kgs of books...

Is it possible to read technical ebooks from amazon on Kobo? By technical book I mean book with a lot of equations and diagrams. Such books are on sale on Amazon for Kindles...

I read about 10% Western comics and 90% Japanese comics (a.k.a manga)
Manga are pretty much aside from their cover or incidental "special" 2 pager opening thing at the start, 99% black and white. So for Manga, it's quite ideal.
it just feels an unneeded upgrade over the other kobos. I will stick with the glo, that has sd card btw
why havent they put a function to invert colors, text to white and background to black so your eyes dont hurt at all

The Kindle store as of now, still has way more books than Kobo along with a much better bargain for most books. It's probably the main reason why Kindles are always going to be the first pick compared to Kobo.
Do you have any idea what is the main difference between eink and LCD, OLED displays, because in the review it seems like you have no clue.
LCD and eink display technologies have crystals that change the color on electrical pulse and OLED uses individual LEDs for pixels that only light on electrical pulse.
LCD and eink booth can be illuminated, but almost all LCDs are designed in a way that backlight is necessary because the crystals do not get enough light from external light source. All Eink displays can use light or no light to be viewed.
Eink has crystals that do not need constant electrical pulses to maintain the color, therefore energy is used only when shifting color, LCD's crystals start to lose the color if no electrical pulse is present and OLEDs have no delay making them the most blinking displays and therefore the least appropriate for reading.
Now to conclude:
- EINK needs power only to change color: BLACK/WHITE (image in not flickering making it ideal for reading)
- LCD needs power to change color and power backlight, but is has minimal delay between color switching
- OLED needs power to light LEDs, screen is constantly flickering, intensity of brightness is controlled via PWM, meaning they flicker even more when on low brightness
There is also a possibility that the light in EINK and LCD is controlled via PWM making the displays to flicker.

onextoronto i'm in uni and I use both! If I can convert my PDFs to a different format without messing up the text (.azw3), I use my Kindle Paperwhite. If conversion is not an option, I use my iPad. 😄

its a pity it doesn't have a micro sd slot. if you are planning on using this for books its great, but when you start talking about comics, they take up alot of space. My Scott Pilgrim Omnibus, and Walking Dead Compendium would not fit on that.
I like e readers. the only thing is mine wouldn't work any more after four years and I had to dish out 146.00 for a new one.the store that I bought it from told me yep that's about as long as they last, four or five years
How is the device when you read PDFs/medical books? Because in Kindle it's kinda laggy when you load PDFs especially zooming in/out.. Hope this one does a great job on that..

Sadly but true. If you want to read large pdf's wih pics or/and formulas comfortably you need to get a decent tablet _AND_ find a right software to read it. Most pdf readers on android are garbage(it seems that the google pdf reader is good); have not tried any on iOS. Windows have only one or two and those are fine ;D.

Overpriced (in EU it costs around 240e), for waterproof you trade no sd card support, no mp3 support, no earphone jack, pdf support is still far from ideal (Inkpad is still the best). Just give me 8+ inch ereader with great pdf handling of all my scholar journals and books, and I can forget about everthing else, this way it is just nice overpriced waterproof big ereader.
It's 2016, videos don't need Flash anymore ;-)
How is the page turning speed on the Kobo compared to the Kindle Paperwhite?
Its about 1 second slower on the Kobo. The Kobo screen is much less responsive but still works, the font on the internal Dictionary is tiny, and the battery drain is no where near as good as advertised.
I have the Aura One and I am quite disappointed with it, the Kindle is much better.
How does this compare against the kindle oasis?
You talk about books but reading manga is awesome on e-ink, and 8gig is not much for that... I hope we can change the internal memory like the glow hd

This "review" feels more like a sales commercial. Very few up close views of the device. No demonstrations of book transfer or annotation capability. While the video is well made, it seems to be more geared towards touting the cinematography skills of the presenter, rather than being informative about the subject matter
i prefer physical books, but read on a tablet most of the time as its just so much more cost effective and convenient. What i watedto say is that for that price i could easily buy a pretty good tablet which would be able to do so much more even in the content reading content ( full color comics anyone). An e reader needs to be low cost, a 'premium' one is redundant in my opinion
I used to think this way but there are reasons to prefer an eink reader over a backlit LCD device. First of all, an eink reader can last up to a month without battery charge. Next, eink readers don't have LCD backlights, and cause less eye strain than LCD readers. Finally, and perhaps most important to folks who read before sleep, an eink reader does not emit blue light like LCD does. Blue light depletes meletonin much faster than other light which is why many folks who use laptops, phones, and tablets in bed have trouble sleeping.
In all seriousness, I don't care much about the blue light, it never effected me much. I do care about eye strain since my eyes are old, and the battery life is most important of all. If you are a fanatic reader like me, you want an eink reader. If you occasionally read, fine use a tablet. Before Tablets I used PDAs... So YMMV.
Is there any way to disable touch input so that I can hold it like a magazine without messing up with random touch input?
Or atleast limit the input zone to the top etc?

Linus Magnell There are a few predetermined ways to configure the tap zones on Kobo devices, but none of them really limit the input area.
So I decided to get the Kobo Aura One anyway, mainly for the comfort light, and it is really growing on me. Way better than Kindle Oasis I find.
I also discovered that by converting my books to PDF I can get rid of the annoying marking features and rest my thumb on the page and lift it without input, so long as there are no short taps.
Sure, I lose some of the on-the-go type/font settings, but I simply make sure to get it right from the start when converting in Calibre.
Good stuff. Best Ereader yet.

the bigger screen the higher resolution and the capacitive input looks great
but no sd card is dealbreaker for me because i use big pdf files on the sd card
you have 8GB on it, for use maybe 6. what kind of pdf do you have man?!!! and you want to take all the library with you?
alxdava2004 if you use only epub than that is more than enough because the file is in Kilo byte
but pdf files are usually much larger in size some in my library are between 80 - 450 mega byte
so for work pdf files I need sd card
if you don't need any big pdf files than 8 gb is enough for you
I use pocketbook. I have 32gb card, but the bigger pdfs i use are 200mb so, 4 or 5 of these keep ME busy for a few months.
In 1gb i keep all epub/txt etc i need and the rest is for pdf and audiobooks.

With kobo using epub files. I've gotten thousands of dollars of books for free. I know library's are free. But popular books your always waiting for. And you need to read it fairly quick. I'd rather just go online and download it for free on gen.lib.
I feel as if you had to say it's a premium product because your video was sponsored. A "basic" kindle paperwhite feels a hundred time more "premium" than that $230 Kobo Aura One. The contrast is much better, as well as the response time of the software. A lot of people were interested in the Aura One because the big screen, thus making it better for PDF reading (same goes for me, as a college student), but turns out the PDF rendering was slower than that of a Kindle's. So, no, this device does not match its price tag.
That is simply not true. I have this, the Kindle PW2, Kindle Voyage and the KA1 is a better ebook reader in every way. The response time is the same as my Voyage, btw, and the cheaper paperwhite doesn't have near the same quality resolution. Those are facts from an owner of three different devices, two of them Kindle and one of them Kindle's higher quality model.
Heath Brown If you really do own all of them then you'd notice that the response time of Kobo is sssssllliiightly slower than any Kindle. 😂 But anyway, I still stand by what I said, the Kobo Aura One is a disappointment when it comes to PDF viewing.
PDF viewing isn't good on it, I do agree. I don't use mine for that though, and I certainly wouldn't use a Kindle for it either. I use my iPads for PDF.
Yes, I do own all of those as well as iPad Mini 2, iPad Air 2 and a few older devices not even worth listing here. Tablets and readers are my hobby. I still don't agree that the page turning is slower on the KA1 vs the PW2.
Yes! You finally got what I was saying. I was interested in Kobo Aura One because of it being bigger than the Kindle, and I figured I could read my PDFs better on it. I'm in uni, so I have to read a lot of PDFs on the iPad, which strains the eyes--as you may probably know. But all the reviews say that while it's a good Kindle alternative, it isn't a good choice for PDF. That's all I was saying! :) Glad we had this discussion.

I've noticed, lately, that less and less reviewers give anything an actual bad review. At best, they say "it's up to you, the consumer." It seems to me that the shift seems to be away from reviewing products, and more the marketing them. It's hard to find actual reviews anymore. Is this e-reader worth it? No. Not when you can get a Paperwhite, even an older gen one, and you will be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the Kobo Aura ONE and a 2013 Paperwhite. As for comics, if you're not going to buy the hardcopies, get them for your phone or tablet, where you can experience the colors. Don't bother getting them on your e-reader, unless they're natively black and white. You don't need a blue light filter on your e-book. Since Amazon is the biggest seller of e-books, you really should just get a cheap Kindle.
I agree that many "reviews" are becoming more of a marketing than reviews. On the other hand, worth of a product is often very subjective. As you stated, there is nothing Aura One has that makes it better FOR YOU. However, for me and others, the large screen size alone makes it worth it. And the ability to customize the white balance is another great reason.
It is probably similar principle to buying a car for example -- I may say that getting a new car for more than $25K is not worth it, but for someone else features that a $50K car offers may be worth it. Someone may value specific features and comfort of a car enough to pay premium for them, others may not.
Agree that ereader (any ereader) is not the right device for comics. Tablet would work much better. And Aura One is not even great for PDF files. (My ancient Sony ereader did that much better, could even reflow PDF text.)
Don't agree about getting locked into Amazon ecosystem. Having multiple ebook sources is a good thing. (And I also much prefer the EPUB format, which no Kindle currently supports.)
JPNY This specific product aside,
the simple fact is you cannot trust reviewers using affiliate links. They're incentivized to sell you the product. I love tech, and love tech reviews (especially on UA-cam), but you can't trust the reviewers to be unbiased.
I'd say the better reviews are the ones that list the pros and cons. This e-reader has some decent cons which he seems to gloss over like battery life, usb connectivity, sensitive touches and even speed. aside from that the price is way too much for most anyone. I spent $100 on my nook e-reader that can still hold up a charge for weeks after 4 years and has sd card expandibility along with 4 gigs of built in space. I know the nook has its cons too and is probably worth $50 on ebay so $180 for a slightly bigger screen with questionable battery life, no sd card expansion and speed that's only half a second faster is not worth it.
