    100% that it's definitely use-case. The way you broke down every use case you interacted with really gives a strong example of how it either was or wasn't useful to you. And yes, in a time of TMI (too much information), having the ability to focus your thoughts offline in a more controlled manner can greatly improve the flow of your brain to your hand to the tablet. And I think that's the win. The back-end of how you acquire your information and aggregate it can vary, from just JFGI'ing it, or to using any various set of AI tool sets, including my new found interest in NotebookLM to aggregate and summarize my content, before I export it out and them upload it to the Remarkable and start making final adjustments, including my own comments on the subject matter. And even with that, you can re-export, put it back into all these wonderful tools, and help it re-form the content into a seamless flow of knowledge. I love the layers, where you can create a notepad and then create another layer to edit your dailies on top of it, like checklists, or other various daily/weekly/monthly processes, then duplicate and reproduce, and just editing/clearing a specific layer for control, always having a hand-created template basically ready to roll with. And depending on your organization skills, if you're going to use PARA or CODE or something like that, you can structure it in a way with tags to easily go through and find all your old stuff from years ago, that maybe you need to cross-reference on what was done earlier. I've used Evernote over 15 years ago, then OneNote, and they're great. But not really very clean and became just a junk pile for me. It was a catch-all that got overwhelmed. And the content was so unstructured that I basically just relied on the search bar for everything. If I couldn't search for it, then it was lost in the sea of notebooks.
    To me, the deliberation of putting things places reminds me of DOS versus Windows. When you install a program in DOS, you make the folder, and install the program into it. You know where everything is at all times. You can then just delete the folder and Bob's your uncle. In Windows, you install a program, and it decides to put dll files in the Windows\System or System32 folder, maybe along with some .NET libraries, and then creates a folder either in your C:\program files or c:\program files (x86), along with %localappdata% and maybe %appdata%, as well as usually registry key entries, and maybe some Windows Services. And then to help you from struggling to find it, it then creates a shortcut to the mess it created under your public users start menu folder, so you don't have to use the Windows Indexing feature that was created with the birth of Windows 7 due to the mess they created over the years. They have basically created their own virus that embeds itself deep into your system, that the only way you can fully remove it is to either rely on their MSI uninstaller (if it's managed properly) or to purchase a 3rd-party tool to extricate their content from your machine.
    Remarkable turns back the clock, and allows you to gain control of the mess again, and put things back in order, and slow down and quiet all the noise... at least for a little bit. Not forever, because we live in the 21st century, but at least for just a little bit to regain consciousness.

    Thank you for an honest review. I have had this thing for a few years and I'm still in the "meh" zone with it. I wish it could turn my self drawn tables into real tables but it always deletes the table and turns my table labels into jibberish which is frustrating and annoying. It has not replaced my use of paper and still find it easier to use a cheap notebook to flip pages and find what I need much faster than with this.

    I’ve “hacked” the Rocketbook notebook system by modifying their free downloadable templates. I have bought their pages that can be wiped with water/cloth. But I print the modified templates on regular paper and use a pencil to take my notes - which I can erase w/o the need of water.
    I did use the reMarkable and the BOOX Go 10.3, but have returned both. Too expensive (and limiting at times) for devices that overlap with my iPad Pro or paper.

    Question: what is the best device recommended for handwriting to text and productivity overall

  • @MarkSiegemund
    @MarkSiegemund 4 місяці тому

    This is exactly my final conclusion aswell (the boox go 10.3 which is extremely similar) . I told myself to actually use it (as an architect and photographer) and beeing useful. It 'feels' good to write on it, it actually really does. And it is fantastic for sketches and reading books. But then I remembered that it was just a nostalgic feeling I had. It made me remember a time long gone unfortunately. And I really miss the colors, at least one accent color... These devices are marketed as simplicity devices, and I think it is not because that is true, I believe it is because the technology is just not quite there yet with REAL color e-ink and faster refresh rates. BTW one big big advantage with e-ink is also Batterie life. You didn't mention that. But then again... Who needs more then 1 day of charge nowadays. Speaking of nostalgic feelings.

      I've played with a friend's typefolio for a couple minutes -- so my opinion isn't super well informed yet. But I think it definitely changes the utility of the device. • @VladimirKostek
      @VladimirKostek 4 місяці тому

      @MattFitzgerald yea it's a lot for what it does, I justified it as I was considering buying a freewrite and those are expensive...so in that respect I thought it wasn't too bad given that it provides the same functionality and a bit more with pen support 🖊

    There is a plethora of studies that show handwritten notes create neural connections for memory, as you're wiring down most important things, where with laptop and typing you are just typing quickly almost verbatim what is being spoken so you aren't forming your own thought process around the memory.
    Handwriting has always shown to be king, and there are studies of students with hand written note Vs laptop note taking and it's a solid 30% memory different in recall of lecture. It is significant, so I disagree with your point on college student note taking. It's a total note taking beast.

    • @MattFitzgerald
      @MattFitzgerald  Місяць тому

      @MrKooderna College Students should probably use a paper notebook and spend their money on tuition instead. This device doesn't revolutionize college much more than a paper notebook might -- and I still argue that the majority of college is designed to be used with a laptop. The Remarkable is nice to have in a classroom setting, I just was surprised how little I ended up using it over the course of an entire MBA.

    "The handwriting is a C because it's cool, but I use it less than I would like." That's a you issue. Why are people so bad at reviewing things? It's like they just don't know how to think on any basic level.
