  • This video is a comparison review between the 7.8-inch Kobo Aura One and the 6-inch Kindle Paperwhite 3. I also talk some about the differences with the Kindle Oasis and Kindle Voyage, but their screens and software are the exact same as the Paperwhite so there's not much difference other than the added buttons and sensors. *I upgraded from the 8 inch to the **Newest.Technology** 10 inch. I really didn't expect it to make that much difference but it has. It is also much faster and responsive. Great Purchase.*

I bought Kobo. The screen with this size is just incredible, it's a pleasure to read!

  • @lessmoore5285

The trick for highlighting on Kobo is to start by briefly pressing and holding on the screen until you see the screen *slightly* flash then you can drag. It works just like Kindle when you do this. As for pdf's ... that's what backlit tablets are for. IF it's important to you to read pdf's on Kobo, you can add KoReader which is a (free) alternate reader for Kobo (and Kindle) devices. Their pdf reader works very well; better than Kindle's native reader, in fact

I had a Kobo Glo when it first came out. There is something fundamentally wrong with the Kobo OS, which makes it slow and unresponsive. The hardware is just superb, just as good as or even better than the kindle, but something in the OS brings it down. Too bad, cause I really don't like Amazons draconian ebook licensing policies.

Interesting. I've never used any of Kobo's dedicated devices, only their tablet apps, which seem to not have a good selection of fonts, but was the only other place I could get a certain book besides Kindle, as I couldn't find it on Play Books.

Does anyone know if with the kobo the search works for tags you have added to the Metadat? I use calibre and add tags but on Kindle u can't search for books by their tags.

your review was a godsend. I was regretting buying a paperwhite kindle 7th gen from ebay this christmas to read. Your review of the kobo initially made me regret buying the smaller screen kindle. I am so happy finding this review and seeing the disaster called kobo unfold in plain sight

    • @gytisdramblewolfskis8521

it's not really a disaster it has a decent amount of things it is better at. The pdf problem is only important to those that read pdf which is not a problem for me. Highlighting has improved in updates after this video. The screen of kobo is a lot better(pixels, size, blue light option). Also kobo supports more formats, so you don't need to convert as many books/manga.

  • @robertlee689

Color temperature adjustment is not just a about style, but about sleep for many people . The redness choice of the screen is to protect circadian rhythm. I prefer the Kobo for that reason. A bluer light (daylight white) paperwhite slows or halts release of melatonin that takes a while to get back when you turn it off and want to sleep. Many houses these days have 5000 k lighting, which is a temperature of near noon sunlight.

Well, this review is pretty outdated, Kobo has improved their software a lot as of recently. For instance, they finally gave people the option to get rid of the header/footer. Performance is also smoother than shown in this vid. However, as someone who owns a Kindle Paperwhite, the only thing stopping me from getting a Kobo is the fact that I’ve already invested into amazon’s store and have purchased a good amount of books, so it sucks.

Nice review. It seems like Kobo is very much to Android what Kindle is to Apple on the eReader front. With Kobo you have better specs on hardware and tons of customization options on the software but seems a bit unstable. While with Kindle you have less features, less customization, less options but a bit more polished and stable system. The Kobo Aura One for the price is a steal and seems to have the best screen and lighting system right now. The larger size is a breathe of fresh air and i'm glad Kobo took a chance. Its very welcome and I hope its success lights a fire on Amazons ass to adopt some of these features. The last thing I want is another 6" Kindle.

It's weird that they haven't updated their home screen. I have the original aura and it doesn't look like the home screen has changed at all. Another thing I had an issue with is the computer not recognizing it when plugged in. Instead I get a message to try formatting drive or inserting disk. I was going to use this to borrow library books with Adobe digital editions, but can't get it to recognize my device. I didn't have this problem with my nook glowlight (2013 edition). Is it because I don't have a micro SD card installed?

If all I EVER do is use for reading books what model would you recommend? Amazon does not care about their customer service....just have a problem and you will find out.

The "red screen" is for people reading at night so they can maintain their "night vision". Like someone on a night watch at sea, that can read a bit and still see the faint lights of the giant freighter bearing down on them in the distance.

i have a paperwhite 2, and the good thing is, it does become slow and unresponsive (pages won't turn etc) but you just refresh it (this is like refreshing a browser, not like refreshing a web page), it sort of shuts itself down, wipes some information, and resets itself; the bad thing is, the software updates take no consideration of the older, smaller CPU, and are basically like trying to use broadband on a computer that can only cope with dial-up, automatic software updates are therefore a bad thing, but i see kobo has them too. So does kobo have 'refresh'? That's important. Basically i want them both, but i need more money and have no way to get it, except by spending less....

I also went into a chapters store to buy the ereader. There was an open one on display. It wasn't very responsive. I thought that it was my fault as I didn't understand button placements. But nope, now I know that it's just that unresponsive.
Thankfully I decided not to buy it and do more research.

I own a paperwhite and got my finnish mate a basic kindle for Christmas.... and just this afternoon I helped setup a spanish friends new Kobo. I must admit, the difference is quite notable in terms of screen responsiveness with the kobo - so often it feels like you have to press everything twice, it's feels so much slower. Even page turning can be hit and miss... and the Kindle just seems nicer in terms of navigation of the menus, home screen and options - it's so simple and easy. Plus if you have an amazon account it makes things easier with the kindle for shopping (so many 1 pound offers on good books like The Witcher series), but the Kobo store was AWFUL. Just now clicking on their 99p link on my PC, takes me to a page that says "Discover Simon & Schuster Digital Originals from 99p", but there is nothing to click, it's just the heading as text. Happy I got gifted a kindle in hindsight seeing how much I use Amazon.

No you don't need to be connected. You can also replace the native dictionaries with other languages (open source third party) . I have a Swedish-English dictionary on mine. French - English is installed by default.

ONE of the worst things about large fonts on Kindle is the "river of white" -- distracting uneven word spacings -- because most Kindle ebooks are formatted for full justified margins (aligned right margins) and there's NO way to change that on the device. Kobo fixes that by allowing a choice between justified margins and ragged right margins. Ragged right margins don't have this problem.

You obviously had a problem with the Kobo reader during the test. I dont find it quite honest from you to make a comparison of the 2 readers in this condition because it gives the impression that the kobo is really slow and buggy.
I watched other videos from your channels and the general impression that I have is that you have a bias for Amazon products

Kobo has updated the software a few times since this video and performance is better, although the touchscreen responsiveness and battery life isn't as good as the Kindle Paperwhite. For one, highlighting works much better than it used to.

It is actually the e-ink paper which is slow, not the processor so that is the reason why an ARM M8 or similar are chosen. A faster one just waste energy.

    • @talhaakram

I can see your point but I was talking about the apparent input lag and unresponsiveness that t experiences from time to time it is too random to be the e-ink display which normally has consistent amount of lag associated with it.

I missed that issue. I assume that is a structure issue in the software, which it is usually. When some events like Ethernet requests are not responded as assumed, the sw stuck until some time out is reached. As far as i understand, they don't have an OS and their sw need some rebuilds. That was the case with kindle when they launched their first, as well.I don't know it there are any options to update the sw, but i hope it will be as i am going to buy one.

1..Compared to my old, Kindle it is slow as hell, for page turning and the dictionary.
2..The touch screen works intermittently, and very often misreads your input..
3..The text on the dictionary, when it does work ! is tiny.
4..You can only alter the menus once you have down loaded a book.
      5..The kobo library is pitiful.
6..They blatantly lie about battery life, its crap.

Overall, Kobo is a *lot* more responsive in fixing problems than Kindle. Kindle's indexing problem, for instance, has been around since the *first* Kindle and they have yet to fix it (google it).
