- For a little treat, we decided to watch our favorite Buffy episode together. We laugh, we sing, and of course we chat all things Buffy. Tell us your thoughts! Plus, should we watch Angel for the channel?
"should I start a buffy rewatch?" - yes. the answer to that is always yes. AND WATCH ANGEL.
How weird, I’ve never seen this ep without Dawn’s line, which is so important. It’s what Buffy says to Dawn just before sacrificing herself in S5. It’s a piece of connective tissues to their bond.
As a total theatre snob, this is, in my opinion, the unequivocally best musical tv episode. The love letter to the genre, the bucketloads of theatre nerd Easter eggs, the in-universe explanation, the importance to the plot, the leaning in to the talent levels of the cast whilst still stretching them artistically - perfect. Just perfect.
Literally almost half of my subscription feed is Buffy/Angel reactors lol, and there are some great ones out there - I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd 100% watch a rewatch/first watch of Buffy and Angel from you guys

That weird little added line of Dawn’s is what Buffy said to Dawn before jumping in season 5. Sweets is the best villain too. He didn’t loose. He didn’t want his prize ultimately, but he kind of won. I did a paper in grad school contrasting the use of music in this episode, Hush and The Body. I had the BEST grad school experience.
Not even kidding, "Walk Through the Fire" is on my playlist of songs I listen to when I need to get out of a bad mood.
I promise to watch every one of your Buffy and Angel reaction videos if you make them.
lol Dawn's line in the end has been there every time I've seen it. This episode is in my life way too much in conversations. There are so many words that trigger these songs to start playing in my head to the point where every time I die while gaming, it usually goes: ME: I died... My friends quickly: How long ago? me: So many years ago.... and my favorite episode is actually New Moon Rising aka Willow's coming out episode and her choosing Tara over Oz
Absolutely watch Angel.
I was lucky enough to go to a singalong showing of OMWF in a Chicago theatre before they had to stop all such showings due to copyright issues. Loads of fun with lots of fellow Buffistas!

I am doing a re-watch of Buffy right now! I am in season 4 when Faith comes back...
Of course you have to watch Angel, Alex! The cross overs alone are super important to the whole Buffyverse.
And that goes without saying, of course I will watch those reactions.
1) Alex, you wouldn’t be the first youtube who loved Buffy and had never watched Angel. We got to watch Shining Antics as he watched Angel for the first time, his joy, his tears, his shock. You really haven’t watched all of Buffy til you’ve watched all of Angel. Just do not google anything, and do not watch the credits for the last (5th) season until you’ve watched the first episode. 2) The Buffy Musical is my favorite episode of TV. My second favorite musical episode of all time is from the first season of I Love Lucy and is called The Operetta. It’s so funny.

This episode is the ONLY reason I wasn't shocked out of my gourd that Anthony Head could sing in "Repo: The Genetic Opera" :D
Yes, please do a re-watch and watch Angel ! Watch in the correct order so that your crossovers match up. There are some amazing things that I can't believe you've never seen ! Please watch. As a personal favor to me :-)
Great reactions, anyone with the class to do Buffy - subbed! Although I hear most of the cast were a tad terrified of doing this episode, the fun they had doing it shines through - brilliant!

Not just one of my favorite episodes of Buffy, but one of my favorite episodes of television. I love me a musical. In my opinion OMWF is the gold standard by which all other musical episodes are measured. It makes sense within the world of the series, it moves the plot forward, and it delivers an emotional punch. Also all of the songs are completely original which is so impressive.
Never seen Angel! Its an incredible show in its own right. Its a much darker show than BTVS but the writers delve into Angel's past with incredible flashbacks making him one of the richest characters in the Buffyverse. In BTVS he was one dimensional but in Angel he is multi faceted. Along with Doyle and Cordelia there is also briiliant one liners and comedy. With so many crossover characters plots and episodes it never loses contact with BTVS. The best episodes of Angel are easily a match for BTVS and Wesley, yes Wesley becomes the character with the greatest character arc of anyone in The Buffyverse. Incredible writing. You must watch it!
If you do a tv show musical episode ranking that moves the plot, I would suggest Xena Warrior Princess: The Bitter Suite. Xena did two musical episodes, but this one was so heart breaking and emotional and very plot heavy!
I think the very first live action TV musical episode is "The Bitter Suite" from Xena: Warrior Princess. Even though it's not a season finale, it concludes a main story arc of the show about the rift between Xena & Gabrielle.

Such a good episode. Also got the CD. Really different direction for the show but was such a great way to reveal Buffys experience of the afterlife vs life

Oh yes, and there was Anya's (pretty heartbreaking) Once More With Feeling flashback song 'Mrs' in S7. "I'll be Mrs, I will be his Mrs, Mrs Anya lame-ass made-up maiden name Harris".

This is definitely one of the best. I also enjoy the other gimmick type episodes with Hush and The Body. They either don't talk, sing or there's no music at all. I used to have this album on my old school ipod and listen to it constantly when I was in the car singing along to all the tracks. This and Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog were played repeatedly for probably months on end. It's all still drilled into my head but I never tire of watching them.
When I left the LSAT (giant standard test that gets you into law school), the last song in this episode popped into my head and played me to the bus stop. And no, I never finished law school. The show seemed to know a little more thanmi dis.
In Angel you would get to know " Fred" Winifred who starts out as a Willow substitute but becomes so much more. Buffy is the star of Buffy but Angel is really about Wesley, Fred and Cordelia
Angel is worth watching, just don't expect it to be as good as Buffy. tbf I haven't found a show I enjoy as much as Buffy yet

If it helps, it's hopefully not too much of a spoiler to suggest that a certain blonde vampire might turn up in Angel at some point. I'm talking about Harmony, obviously. ;)
This episode is like a Smiths song. I wonder what was decided first: have an episode that delivers all the bad news that's been building up for a season, or make it an up tempo musical?
The reason Dawn has a dance number was that Michelle did not want to sing and offered to dance instead

It wasn’t until the dance number and Satan dude dancing that I realized LOL this is the only episode of Buffy I ever watched cause my sister made me watch it. I knew I’ve seen this
This is a great episode. My favorite episode of Buffy is "Hush" I watch that one at least once a year

I don't think they do it anymore but for a few years at DragonCon in Atlanta they would do a watch along to this episode and people in the crowd would sing along to the show. It was a lot of fun

It’s terrible, but me (59) and my twenty one year old son know the whole musical by heart. We sing it when we’re in the car together.
I've only ever watched the full version. Didn't even realise there was an edited version without Dawn's Ballet. Those versions should be made illegal. Not watching Angel is like unfathomable to me it's Buffy part 2.
UPN broadcast the full run in full. It has been sliced and diced in reruns, something that tells you something about the attitudes of the suits to art.

This episode was actually longer than the standard for TV episodes, when it was first aired, with commercials, it ran over an hour. When it was rerun and shown in syndication for years a few parts were edited out, like Dawn's line, so it would fit in an hour with all the money making commercials. Of course, once released on DVD and later in streaming, that is no longer needed.
I almost can't watch the reaction because it doesn't play the songs in their entirety. Just when I start singing it jumps to another part and I have to reorient myself only for it to skip ahead once more...with feeling. Nailed it.

Heres what i will say about Angel. He was my least favorite character on Buffy. I much preferred him when he was interacting with the gang more than Buffy. On his own show he really does blossom and becomes an actual character. At times Angel is a better show than Buffy. Sometimes Buffy is better. But the great thing about Angel is it took rejects like Angel and made them main event. Very impressive thing to do. And i say this as a big Spike fan myself, Angel the show is still worth watching.
I agree. It took me a long time to watch Angel the Series because I really do not like him on Buffy. I am glad I finally did, because it's a very good show, with some brilliant episodes. I have to say though, while I do like Angel better now - he's still my least favorite character - even on his show!
I watched the original broadcast and Dawn's ballet was included. In fact, I have never seen that ballet cut from any release.
I haven't watched Buffy (or Angel the series) in AGES. Truly, it's been years. So if you two decide to do a re-watch, I'll definitely re-watch with you!

FYI, Adam Shankman was the choreographer here, not Hinton Battle. I know Shankman from his judging stint on So You Think You Can Dance, but he also choreographed Hairspray, amongst many other films.

I'd love to see Angel reactions! I even prefer Angel's show to Buffy in a lot of ways once it finds its voice and really gets going.
Agreed, I really like that show - season 4 missteps aside. I also think that Wesley's character arc is my favouite of all in the Buffyverse.

Also, watch Angel, the show did so much with that character and Cordelia, in many ways it surpassed Buffy, it's such a fun series. And don't worry; Spike shows up at some point
My all time favorite musical episode of a television series. It’s right up there with the Xena musical.

Been subscribed for a bit and never really planned to comment but as an original watcher of Buffy and Angel as they aired on TV I will come out of the shadows to request that you please do yourself the great favor of watching angel. I love them both but I do believe Angel is the better show. You won’t regret it and we would all enjoy watching as you get to see the amazing story arcs and character development they were able to achieve. PLUS if you’ve never seen Angel, you’ve missed some of Buffy too. There are several cross over episodes and both shows use a lot of the same characters. The “Buffyverse” doesn’t stop at the end of season 7 of Buffy. It picks up right after those events in Angel season 5 (this is not a spoiler, just a comment about the timeline). Anyway, all I am saying is, I’d watch it if you guys reacted to it. Thanks for posting this one!

This is one of my favorite Buffy the V.S.!
The first time I heard this episode was coming I was like…😱 “What the hell are you doing Joss!!!”. Then I saw it and I fell in love with it.
The line Dawn gave, “The hardest part…”, was from the final episode of the previous season. Buffy said it to Dawn before she threw her self off the tower. 😢
By the way, I got the soundtrack when it first came out too. 😊 It is still my favorite musical. Do you have Anthony Stewart Head’s “Music for Elevators” album. I think it’s great.

Season 4 Episode 1 "The Freshman." I just found your reactions the other day and I had to see if you had done any Buffy the vampire slayer reactions! Just watched this one today. I know Jessa is way to young, but I swear I thought she could be "Sunday's" Dopplegager. I mean that in a good way! Sunday is Evil, but an Amazing character.
In your 'ranking of musical episodes' project, you should also make note of their release dates, to examine the progression from earliest to most recent!

The reason for Dawn’s ballet appearing and disappearing is the length-with the original broadcast they had to bump the next program by about 6 minutes. For re-broadcasts, they had to cut the episode down so it would fit into the standard 1 hour with commercials.
As for two iconic shows - ask Alyson Hannigan about being in this and How I Met Your Mother. Or David Boreanaz, Buffy/Angel plus Bones. Although I feel sorry for Alyson for being so very obviously out of tune…

I just finished a rewatch of BtVS. First time through I didn't much care for this episode (although a big fan of Season 6 in general for its dealing with issues of depression and trauma). On rewatch, it's moved up to pretty much my top episode of all.

Season 1 of angel is at season 4 of buffy, there are crossover
Other musical episodes that move plot forward is Xena and Lexx. Now if you do t know lexx cause I assume we all know xena lexx is a sci-fi show that was filmed in Germany I believe. It’s in English but the musical episode in lexx explains the whole plot of the show. You literdont need to see another episode it has good music and it’s done as a performance in a theatkike it would be a musical. I suggest to watch that one.
Dawn is a put upon character and I think unjustly. Dawn was created by 3 middle age Eastern European monks, What in the world did they know about a 14 year old California girl? They had to create Dawn from their perspective. Where would they get their ideas… from pop culture and their perceptions . Do Dawn is a hodgepodge of television, movies, teen magazines, and the European perspective of American teenage culture. Guess what? That is how Dawn acts the first 40 episodes. Then she slowly, like a teenager, starts to mature and learn from her choices. I don’t judge Dawn from the actions of other girls in the Buffyverse. I think of Dawn has dropped in from a Disney/ ABC Friday night show at the time and how one of those girls would try to get by raised by a dying Mother and then the Slayer.
So I have the televised version.
My kids were chocked when they heard the full version. “I’m not wearing underwear…” 😉
So here's a suggestion for you. How about a reaction to Dr. Horrible's sing along Blog.

I mean, she's fine as a character, I guess (lol), but no freaking way should she have been put with Willow. Tara was her big love, and she was murdered, and SPOILER ALERT Willow almost destroyed the world after Tara died, so... in comparison Kennedy was just meh. Tara was awesome. There is no replacing Tara.
Right! Like, ok, I didn’t need Tara to be a wreck for the rest of her life, but I’m not ready for her to be in a serious relationship yet. Go on a few dates, fine, but call someone her girlfriend? No!!
@@jessaandalexwatch Exactly! Maybe wait a little longer, not jump right in. It just didn't feel like natural progression of a building relationship. They didn't have time for that - they were in the midst of preparing for battle! Lol.
David Boreanaz purposely sings badly..it’s actually quite difficult to sing off pitch like that, just fyi..
Angel is better
I am in the rare minority of Buffy fans who don't love this episode. If you have a musical, have more than two actors who can sing. I've seen James sing solo a lot,, but you don't need a musical theater voice to sing Springsteen covers. Fun writer cameos though: David Fury got the mustard out. Marti Noxon isn't wearing underwear. I hate that people called Tara Willow a duet. I actually liked Iyari, though didn't love Kennedy. I didn't know that Tara's nickname for Willow was Plete.
Still annoyed that I spoke to Adam Shankman about this episode and didn't know he choreographed it.
Please watch Angel. I worked on S1 and 2. I think those were the best seasons.
