Please never apologise for crying in a reaction. One of the reasons I love your reactions is because you get so emotionally invested in the characters and their stories.
I don't cry over anything, and Buffy has had my eyes get watery a few times. I don't see how anyone that gets invested in the characters doesn't ever at least feel that sad feeling in their chest. I don't watch any reactions of people who don't get emotional. It's no fun if they don't.
I told him, in another comment, we ALL cry when Buffy tells them! Every. Single. Time.(I’ve watched the whole series 389 times beginning to end. This episode at least 600 times! 😂😂😂Lol!) I also told him, we ALL cheer when we get our first Spuffy kiss! Every. Single. Time. 🙌🏼💗🙌🏼💗
@@tiffanycoates431ahh on LOVE Spuffy!..
"Is this a musical episode?"
"No, this is THE musical episode!"
Hey! That's what I wanted to post!
I love the callback to the season 4 (I think) episode where Spike explains how he killed 2 previous slayers and says, "every slayer has a death wish, even you. The day you wish for death, i will be there." He said that to taunt buffy, but here he is when buffy is wishing for death to convince her to live.
They are still singing because the demon told them so: "...once more with feeling..." He required/ordered them to sing one more song.
Good point! I didn't notice that... 0_o
Whoa. I never thought of that before.
Thank you so much I totally forgot that this is what I was thinking a while ago and I needed some kind of explanation to put in our programs for when we do the musical because I knew people were going to ask about that
Maybe..but the saying simply refers to jackass conductors that say stuff like that..
And Willow didn't just perform the spell, she was the one who really pushed for them to bring Buffy back even though she was aware of how dangerous it could be. Also, after Buffy reveals she was in heaven, Tara is standing next to Willow, touching her shoulder, comforting her. But you can clearly see the physical distance between them; it's nothing like when they were comforting each other in The Gift.
I love that the song predicts the ending "The curtains close on a kiss, God knows."
Yup! I also like that Giles’ theory in the beginning is exactly right: “I’ve got a theory that it’s a demon - a dancing demon...”
yes! a lot of people miss that!
First time spike solely saved the day
Spike finally saved buffy when she was doing her suicide dance.
..is something you don’t hear everyday
@@sdab4856 Because usually when you dance yourself to death, people don't bother to get in your way...
“Suicide dance”😂😂.
I've been waiting almost 20 years for Amber Benson and Anthony Stewart Head to make an album of duets, their voices sound so good together.🥰
Right? that is literally my favorite song to sing. So beautifully done.
they did do a duet on one of his albums, song called All the Fun of the Fair ua-cam.com/video/QkLzsK3X6ug/v-deo.html
She was guest vocals on his album 'Music for Elevators' in 2002
They also did a reunion for the 25th anniversary of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
One of the greatest things about this episode, is how pivotal it is to the overall plot. It's not just a bunch of silly songs. There are real stakes, real consequences, real character development.
So great that you weren't spoiled that this would be a musical, always best when that happens. Such an awesome reaction, could really tell you loved it. Make sure to rewatch it a million times :)
Joss wanted to do a musical episode because he felt it was the only way to have Buffy tell her friends what they did/where she had been. As she otherwise would never have told them.
Can't remember who said it, but, it was usually in regards to actual stage musicals but it applies here
"Sure, you can 'say' something, but singing it makes it more powerful!"
There's another thing that is only hinted at in the episode, in theater when a character sings or otherwise addresses the audience, they can't lie.
This is possibly the most entertaining single episode of ANY show. Ever. I certainly was brought to tears, because they absolutely nailed it. I was a 45 year old guy at the time - hardly the target audience. I loved your reactions, once again. Thanks for allowing yourself to feel Living so deeply.
I feel like this episode, other than most of Buffy, hasnt a target audience. Its just pure human emotions.
Yep that bit where both spike and buffey drop an octave and sing out of key always gives me shivers.
Clearly shows the disharmony and how they are out of sync with everyone.
Such a smart use for it.
FYI: Anthony Head, Amber Benson, and James Marsters all have a background in singing, which is why they have the best sung songs, as well as the more complicated ones. Also Michelle Trachtenberg was a ballerina, which is why she got the lovely ballet number. Alyson Hannigan isn't fond of her voice, which is why she got the smallest part. I also noticed almost (if not all) of her solo lines are comedic, so the quality wasn't a big deal since either way they would at least get a laugh.
(I know I'm here late, so I don't know if anyone will see this, but I didn't notice anyone else commenting this, so...)
Yay! I'm happy Arvin now knows my random Once More with Feeling trivia.
Also SMG wanted someone else to do her singing until she learned that she would be revealing that she was in heaven. Then she decided she needed to do it herself, so she took some singing lessons.
HAha, life's a song, you don't get to rehearse! And every single verse can make it that much worse! THE quintessential musical episode in television history.
Glad you were 'unspoilt' going into this episode, makes the reaction all the better. Josh Wheddon had wanted to do a musical episode and finally decided to write one after he held a Shakespeare reading at his house with a number of the cast, during which several cast members sang and the rest is history. He learnt how to write music so that he could compose all the songs himself.
Sweet, the musical Demon, was played by multi Tony award winner Hinton Battle with cameos by David Fury, as the Mustard Man, and Marti Noxon, as Parking Ticket Lady, who were both executive producers on the show.
Hinton just passed😢..
I love how the fire trucks pass behind the group as they sing, "Let it burn!" And they were probably called out because someone danced their house on fire...
No one ever watches to the end of the credits to hear the Mutant Enemy logo demon's grr argh get sung.
:(
But I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction, Arvin. Your intuition and emotions are always spot on.
'Why is there a funeral at night?' Ah yes, that is the strangest thing when everybody is dancing and singing and people are tapdancing and bursting into flames
no one has bothered to mention that the only one held hostage in this episode (besides Dawn) was some 'hot dude in white unbuttoned shirt' tied to a tree near a graveyard lol definitely not a typical Buffy episode rescuing a himbo 😂
They were singing for last time, because the demon before leave said "once more with feeling".
I've seen a lot of reactions to this episode but your reaction was without a doubt the best reaction I've seen. I was right there with you crying at the exact same time.
I'm so happy you weren't spoiled for this episode! Thank you so much! 💞
Agreed! The bit where he goes back and watches Willow's expression just because it's so powerful, and then starts crying when Spike delivers his words shows why he's one of the best reactors.
I love that juuust when _Where Do We Go From Here_ starts to get a little cheesy, they cut away with Spike. This show knows how to poke fun at AND fully utilize the strengths of a genre.
and he skipped the best line by Spike: 'The day you suss out what you do want, there'll probably be a parade. 76 bloody trombones."
To be fair, nearly every single line of this episode is perfection.
My favourite part of this episode is how well the songs are written for each character.
Obviously not the first television musical, but the first great one. It definitely sparked a wave of similarly ambitious projects across television in the early 2000's. Personally, I've never seen it topped, but I'm sure there are other great ones out there. The most impressive part, other than the music, choreography, etc. was that the song are SO important. This isn't just a musical for it's own sake. These characters are going through things so crazy the only way to open up about them is to sing it to the rafters. I love this episode so much.
There's such a high demand for funeral services in Sunnydale that they're booked 'round the clock. At least, that's the headcanon for why there's a funeral at night in Spike's song.
I mean the slogan for the Sunndale Funeral Home is "we'll take care of the rest!" I have a feeling you could get a pretty good discount on funeral services by agreeing to have it at night. You just might get interrupted by singing vampires.
I assure you we have all cried multiple times while watching this series. And them finding out Buffy was in heaven like this is a gut punch. No worries.
New Subscriber! As a HUGE BTVS Stan, I love watching reactions to Buffy, Angel, and few couple of other shows but, mainly Buffy! I’ve watched the whole series 389 times- working on 390, right now! It’s my favorite tv show! Seeing reactions to BTVS- especially this episode, and a couple others that are faves- always make me so happy! And you did not disappoint! I am absolutely obsessed with your laughter! It’s contagious! Like Covid- but in an awesomely, happy way! Thank you for spreading such joy & happiness! The world needs more of it! I can’t wait to see more of your reactions! Sending you love & positivity from the coast of South Carolina! One more thing….. We all cry- every time we watch this episode- when Buffy tells them she was in Heaven! I also cry, watching it in every reaction, with every reactor. Every. Single. Time! We also cheer for Spuffy’s first kiss! Every. Single. Time. This episode is just one of the many, groundbreaking & wonderful episodes of Buffy! “The Body” & “Hush” are 2 more. It’s because of the genius of this show, that makes it possible to rewatch it thousands of times….. and NEVER get tired/bored with it! Before you realize it, you’ll be singing every word along with the Scoobies! Until next time……… 💗💗💗
Also the guys playing the puppet creatures, we're also the vampires and demon in the Going Through The Motions song and the painting crew when Anya and Xander are talking to Giles
18:12 You're not the only one moved to tears during that scene 😢 Buffy just made a big reveal to all her friends that she was 'pulled out from heaven'. I also love how it flows lyrically "I live in hell 'cause I've been expelled from heaven" It's so beautiful. And yeah, it's so touching that Buffy finally got to confess her true feelings knowing how much it hurts to keep it all in. This whole time, she confided in Spike and made sure he didn't tell them "they can never know" (6x3) and because he kept that to himself, I like to think that he was rewarded with a kiss in the end there.
Shoot I'm tearing up just reading this and I haven't even watched the reaction yet.
@@barbarabaker1457 Oh I think I was tearing up on the parts that I didn't think it would make me tear up anymore but that's because of Arvin's reaction. 😥
Not to forget the she so really wanted to say "I was in hell" but the "magic" changes it mid sentence to "I was in heaven" hence the weird pronunciation the first time of the "he" part.
@@Henrik_Holst I think that and the emotion also altered the note, adding a necessary strain.
yes, its a musical, and its great, but more than that, there is just so much going on in this episode. One of the best written episodes ever on television.
9:33 Excellent question. One of two answers: A) it's because it's a musical and time means nothing if the song requires. Or B) Sunnydale has such a high body count that they have too many funerals to fit in the day.
12:55 Agreed. He's afraid she'll quit life and never grow or truly heal with him as a crutch.
16:26 LOL right? That always felt a little weird to me but so much is perfect I hardly have room to nitpick. So much Work and major talent had to go into this.
Buffy's songs (especially the heaven one with Spike) and the Tara Giles duet hit me the hardest. I feel them with such familiarity there are no words. So it's an odd comfort to watch tears through it.
also...wait, can't type what I was going to. damn, it always comes out as spoiler. nevermind.
diff'rent strokes i suppose; i love the bit when buffy encourages the audience to sing along.
@@sirmoonslosthismind That's a good point and perspective wise who's to say? Could be brilliant in a way I'm just not seeing. I ever see a solid analysis, I may even change my mind someday. Certainly happened many times. Best part about going over stuff like this repeatedly with others.
2:30 Little Mermaid moment. 11:04 Nutcracker moment.
I love that every song feels right and uniquely fits the vocals and dynamic like a glove.
Aww, you fast forwarded it thru the last song at the end of the credits.
Arrgghhh!🎼🎵
So many of the characters' secrets are brought to light in this episode...it got me thinking, as a writer would it be easier to write some of those scene as conventional drama or is it easier to put those feelings and emotions in songs? Songs act as a sort of direct path for the characters to express their deepest feelings to the audience (and to each other?). So, it makes sense that all of their secrets would need a musical episode to be revealed. Almost 20 years after it first aired, 'Once More, With Feeling' remains one of my very favorite episodes of television.
The last Buffy reactor to react to this episode gave a very good analysis on his take with this episode as a musical because it actually works well as such unlike other musicals which he criticized the movie "La la land" for. That movie, in his opinion, was better off as a non musical because it tends to tell more than show or something. This episode works as a musical primarily as you described "as a sort of direct path for the characters to express their deepest feelings to the audience (and to each other)" with the use of a spell. When you think about it, they could've done an episode where everyone is forced to speak their mind but I'm not sure how much of an impact they'd make with these revelations. Buffy needed to confess these to her friends, as a means of release, and what's gonna take her to do that? She confided in one person, Spike, which she made sure that he kept as a secret. The dancing demon made them break their composure and let them spill the beans. It's more poignant through music, I'd say.
One of my favorite Buffy episodes ever. I was waiting for this one. Loved seeing your joyful reaction to realizing it was a musical episode. And I love how unlike a lot of other musical episodes it's really not filler it drives the plot forward so well.
In the U.S. a high school freshman would be in 9th grade, so about 15 years old. Elementary school and middle school (sometimes called junior high) are usually grades 1 through 8.
Yeah, it's a brilliant episode. Buffy is the first show to do a musical episode, Joss wrote all the lyrics and brought professional very possibly Broadway people in to write the music and do the choreography, which is why it all looks so perfect. Except for bunnies, which is a phrase that really works in any situation. Seriously. Enjoy the rest of your day now and yes, the songs will be stuck in your head for at least a week.
Yeap love this episode. That kick at the door from Buffy and that last group song always gives me chills. Love it . Giles Tara and Spike have amazing voices
well, giles tara and spike were the only ones who had prior professional singing experience.
Willow had very few lines because she hated how her singing voice sounded.
I grew up in California in the 70s, was a freshman in HS in 78/79 and was 14 and was one of the youngest in my class, I think most were 15 as a freshman. I remember how jealous I was that in their Senior year they could write their own note for absences. I was 17 my whole Senior year.
Same. I started high school at 13 (turned 14 within the first couple of weeks) and graduated at 17 because my birthday is in September. Most others were 18.
Americans start Freshman at 14/15 years old and graduate 17/18.
Depending on the school. Some high schools start in 9th grade, some in 10th.
@@rachelr4126 in Canada, it's 10th grade and two more years after that
Yeah it's junior high you start at around 12/13. That usually lasts 2 years.
@@RitsychServare In Ontario, high school is grades 9 to 12 (ages 14-18)
And in Quebec, there's 6 years of elementary, 5 years of high school, then 2 years of CEGEP.
seasons 6 and 7 really introduced some great new demons. I wish this guy had returned. But even so, season 6 gave us Clem. I love that guy.
Great reaction. I loved the same parts as you. Spike's speech and Dawns repeating Buffys message back to her are really powerful. Buffys song is also really powerful during that section at the Bronze. You can buy a cd or a LP of the soundtrack to this episode. It also has the song Sacrifice from The Gift.
Buffy's songs hit different when you're in your early twenties
Fun fact: the mustard guy and parking ticket lady are both writers/producers on the show. David Fury and Marti Noxon. :)
I have been sooo waiting for this! And I was not disappointed :-)
My theatre group is putting on the stage version next July in Detroit! So freaking excited!
Ok, you sold me. Your reactions are adorable. So here I go back to season 1 episode 1 to binge your reactions. Great job - loved it. ❤
I literally never cry at movies or shows, but this show always makes me cry, especially this episode
Such a sincere, heartfelt reaction. Loved it! I'm glad that you weren't spoiled that it was the musical episode. So many reactors have this episode built up for them and while it is an absolutely fantastic episode, having it built up can spoil it a little too. Fun fact, Joss Whedon wrote it, but he didn't know how to write music so he taught himself how. Great reaction Arvin!
New to your channel & love watching your honest, raw reactions. This is my FAVORITE episodes of Buffy,bar-none! I've cried along many times. Say what you will(& many have), but Joss Whedon is truly a genius🎶
Late to the party on this reaction, but I gotta say I loved your joy at the start and your emotion at the end. Best reaction I've seen to this episode, and I've seen many. Great job, you got a new subscriber
LMFAO U DIDN'T KNOW, THIS IS AMAZING
In the US grade 9 is a freshman which is approximately 15 years old :-)
You can see Giles guilt because he wasn’t there to stop them from bringing her back
I love seeing people's reaction to seeing this episode for the first time. Definitely the best musical episode ever of a TV series.
Benny points for catching the backup gag. Most people don’t have a clue.
A for where do we go from here… spike and Buffy go to ‘smashed’ in just a few episodes…
Technically Giles was partly right. It was a demon that danced
High school ages in the US is 18-17 senior,17-16 junior,16-15 sophomore,15-14 freshman. provided someone didn't flunk or get held back.
I have been waiting for this!! Loved your reaction! I cry too during Buffy's reveal about heaven, so good! One of my favorite episodes ever
Greatest episode of television.....ever. PERIOD.
I love how every song perfectly fits the characters, the story, and the actors. The songs have a real reason to be sung, and also contribute to the plot by forcing people to reveal their secrets. Plus, they're catchy!
Aw you missed the "Grr Argh" :(
The best part xD
"I don't know why I'm crying."
Because you've got a heart, my man.
This is one of my favorite episodes! I'm glad you enjoyed it:)
One of my favorite episodes in the history of TV
Whedon should have saved the heaven reveal for this episode so we could have experienced it as the Scoobies did.
I like that, but the point of us knowing is to 1. explain her depression, and 2. showing that she’s still more worried about their feelings than her own. When she reveals it here, it’s not because she wants to, but because the demon forced her to. That’s what we’re supposed to feel. If it was just revealed to us, we might think Buffy was waiting for the right time to tell them or something. But I get it - it would’ve been impactful in a different way! 😊
You pick up on so many little things they put in there. Love your reactions, keep up the good work 😊 makes me feel like I’m watching the show with a good friend
Oh I just love watching reactions to this episode, especially when you don’t know beforehand that it is a musical episode!
IT HAS BEGUN!
Amazing reaction, loved it and thank you for being so honest and real in your reactions. Love to see you jump back to those moments that touches you too, just like they have for us that have watched it before! :)
Love seeing people react to this.
In America (and I think canada) we have junior high (which can also have freshmen) which comes between elementary school and high school. We has pre-school
that can start anywhere as young as 18 months to 4 years old. Then kindergarten which is between 5 and 6. Elementary school goes from 1st which we start around 6/7 depending on how early or late in the year your birthday is (some start off as 6 and turn 7 during the school year and others are 7 and turn 8 during the school year. Well unless your birthday is just right during the summer that you turn just before a year starts and again during the two/three month summer break) to 5th or 6th grade (depending in the school depends on if they count 6th grade as part of Elementary or not. Some schools it is the last year of elementary school others it is the first year of junior high school and others it is its own thing not part of either) at this point kids are around 11 (again depending on when their birth date is in the year). Then you have two to three years (depending on if the school count 6th grade as oart of it or not. You have maybe 6th grade then 7th and 8th grade) of junior high school. By the time you are done with that you are 14 or 15 and start high school. Junior high has freshmen, sophomores? It may be junior instead and seniors (I am not sure what they have when they dont include 6th grade. I think it is only freshmen and seniors). Then 9th grade (the first of high-school) you are a freshman again and age is again youngest 14 about to be 15 within the first few weeks of school
to 15. Then 10th grade/15 about to because 16 very soon to 16 years old is sophomore, the 11th grade or 16 about to be 17 soon to 17 years old. Is junior and then 12th grade/ 17 about to be 18 soon to 18 or maybe even 19 near the very end of the school year years old is seniors.
In the USA you become a freshman at 14 aka grade 9. We spend 13 years in school from five in Kindergarten to 18 in 12 th grade. You can start younger depending on the state and birthday. But 14 is the normal age. 7th grade is still middle school.
This reaction was an absolute delight, thank you for making my rough week brighter.
Dawn is a Freshman but she's only one
I loved seeing you light up when you found out it was a musical, I felt the same about this episode! :D
"Is this a musical episode?" Actually, it's just the typical filler episode where they sing songs like it's perfectly normal. 😂 No really, it's definitely shocking to see our characters just start singing... like it's so... out there. Especially with Buffy. Giles, we've already heard in season 4. Tara and Spike's solos were great. The best one is Tara and Giles' duet. 🤩 But then, I love how in the end, they discovered it was Xander who did it... of all people. 🤔 I mean, it could be Dawn... right? Did anybody find it believable for Xander to summon a dancing demon? lol Also, I love how the answer to all of this started with Giles' theory but then brushes it off quickly 'cause 'something isn't right there.' And I'm just thinking: 'Really, Giles? You live in a Hellmouth! Lots of things aren't 'RIGHT there'. 😆Best episode in this season so far. Maybe even the best in the series. 👍
I thought it was bunnies
I think it’s the best episode of TV ever, beating out GoT 6-10.
Speaking of that scene with Xander, am I the only one who laughs at how high Xander's voice goes there. I've never heard him talk like that in any other episode that I can recall.
@@PoseurGoth It sounded bizarrely like a Disney side character trying to make excuses for his mistakes. lol
The way she says "heaven" makes me tear up every time. It's soundd so sad. 😢
Defo my fav episode of Buffy. So Good.
That part always makes me cry too.
Freshman 14-15
Sophomore 15-16
Junior 16-17
Senior 17-18
One of the best episode, it was really amazing that time and Buffy started the musical episode trend that time. After that most of the tv series did this. Anthony Stewart Head ( Giles), James Marsters( Spike) were really singers and they have songs. Their voices are wonderful. And I'm happy of your enjoyment and laughs. All the songs words meaning so much and fit the stiations perfectly. Theyy relly did a good job. Buffy's song always get me that scenes were masterpiece and how she tell evry secrets she hold. Than Spike rescue Buffy from burning and his words about life was so amazing and strong. Everything is strong in this episode. Buffy- Spike last scene was worth to watch. I was waiting it so long and I was shipping them. Finally we got it. I don't know what you think about Spufyy (Spike/Buffy). Now Tara know Willow spelled her. I'm happy for you , you enjoyed and loved this episode
@TJ Tenser I didn't know. What is this show I wonder?
@TJ Tenser You don't have to spoil I just wonder wich tv series is it. I can watch that too. But If you can't say the name its ok
Xena had a musical episode.....
Hercules didn't have a musical but had an a episode with musics
Xena had 2 musical episodes the first of which aired back in 1998. well before this episode of Buffy. Though I am a huge fan of both shows. Xena has a special place in my heart and noone ever does recations to it sadly.
@TJ Tenser I am subscribed to her. I have watched what youtube reactions shes done for xena and charmed. I am disappointed she hasn't put more xena reactions up. I don't have the money for patreon.
Oh i have been WAITING for this and it did not disappoint.
Don't worry, the look back to WIllow as she disclosed DEVESTATED us all
My favourite episode of anything ever and I really liked your reaction ^-^
Looooove that someone is watching Buffy!!! Can't wait for you to get to the end. Have you ever seen these before?
Nope his first time and I love it! Oh that reminds me I have to add a couple of people to the reactor list.
Super sweet reaction!
and yeah, that look on Willow's face......
You made me cry with you.
Best musical episode next to Psych!
Yay! Great reaction
Buffy fire song reminds me of Michael Myers lol. The fire probably freezes him and when He looks into it its black lol. How Buffy acts I could see MI hael being like when he was kid before he took those feelings and used them for killing. The opposite way Buffy does or kind of lol.
HOW DID I MISS THIS??
I never got why they automatically assumed she went to hell lol. After all she done she should go to heaven lol. But they needed a reason or excuse to bring her back and the more they kept saying it the more sounded like a excuse lol. I'd be the only one in the group saying do you guys really believe she went to hell when she sacrifice herself lol.
The curtains close on a kiss God knows
I know I'm late to this reaction but. A fun fact. The "Heaven" and "Living" lines sound like they're sung badly, but they're NOT. Whedon used something in music and singing theatre known as a 'Discordant Note'. This is where the order of the note is purposelyt shifted to create the audio equivilent of the 'uncanny valley'. It's supposed to feel broken and 'not right'. This is in contrasting to her emotions and the word. Heaven is a place of joy, but her memory of it has been sullied by the tragedy of being pulled out, so it has become a sad memory. A sad memory of joy. She remembers life being full of joy and fire, but now its cold, so 'living' is also discorded for the same reason. Also, it's spike that says living, he's dead, so living is broken for him.
Multiple small things that whedon did make this a masterful episode. Shame the directors a twat, but damn he has skill.
You missed something right at the end of the credits! The "grrr argh" bit
Yes. Please watch it again. It's different for this episode.
never seen you before, this just popped into my recommendations - what a delight to see someone being surprised by this episode! how did you manage to do that?! ugh, I'm only two and a half minutes into this video and I'm /so/ infected by your happiness, this is awesome. well done, subscribers of this channel for not spoiling this, well fucking done! ✨😊
edit: done watching the whole thing and what a joy that was, gonna go binge on your channel now, you are so charming 💖
Oh you missed the grr argh at the end! 🙁
At the time, Freshman was 9th grade. I don't know if it's changed since then.
It has not.
There are some school districts that are a little different. Some might have large buildings but few students in a grade and so start at 7th grade. Others might have a separate campus for freshman. But the norm is 9th to 12 starting at 15 or 14 if born after September 1st
When Tara song all people they are react to this song say Tara has under Willow spell but that’s not the fact Tara singing al of her love for Willow and Amber benson tell herself Tara singing all of her love for Willow see the behind scenes of Buffy musical episode part 1
