    Classical player here. I did my job using a Bach 3B. What I learned later on is that a 3C to a 3B doesn't just mean deeper, it also changes the shape of the cup. Finding a diameter of a 3C with the same shape but deeper provided me the same resistance, but darker tone which is what I wanted. 3B is more of a V shape and less resistance making it harder to play.

    😂😂AUDIO GLITCH: At around 18:17 and 20:36 in the video, the audio is muted. I double checked my original video on my laptop and there is no problem with the audio at those points. I have emailed UA-cam's tech support about the problem. Hopefully it won't take too long for them to fix it. I suppose if you like you could turn on captions if you like until UA-cam fixes this. Again, for for this inconvenience.😂😂

    I played a 5B in college, and I've enjoyed it a lot. I'm not a range player at all, but it's such a pretty sound and it works well with me, especially in chamber music. I did have to switch to play up to the others in my jazz group - there I play a Marcinkiewicz model 10.

This fall he actually started acting like he was interested in playing and his sound was getting much better so I gave him a 3c and he sounds surprisingly good (especially on my horn). There is also a 5 with no letter in case the A wasn't deep enough. I also notice the tuning is different between moutpieces. A deeper mouthpiece needs the tuning slide to be a bit more in.

    Which mouthpiece would you recommend for playing TAPS? Is there one that would be great for that specific range? Thanks and appreciate your videos.

    • @TRUMPETSIZZLE
      @TRUMPETSIZZLE  6 років тому +3

      TAPS encompasses middle G to high G on the trumpet.
      That is a normal playing range for anyone who doesn't have exceptional chops, for anyone who doesn't have a well-developed upper register.
      Because of this, I don't make any recommendations of mouthpieces. ....any mouthpiece will do. In fact, I can play taps WITH NO mouthpiece at all.

    Kurt the BR is great at the mid to high range, though I detect slight airyness at the mid to lower.range . The 3F is way too airy throughout Fail The 3E is a solid performer slight air at just some notes through to midstaff, .then is very clean up to top . The 3D has nice overtones mid staff full round would be my description . 5C doesnt like the dblG and neither did you . The 5B has full round from low G to G above staff to A 5B actually comes alive ( beautiful full tone) at mid staff to A above.. B probably stands for Bucket . thanks for the comparison Bring 2 mouthpieces. Conclusion The BR for Everest and the 3e for mid stuff and 5 b with an extra set of lips and lungs for the basement

      Well the "D" is a slight more shallow cup, but...slight. If you really don't play in marching band, pep band, or jazz band and only a wind ensemble, concert band, or orchestra, "D" cup is probably a decent level of bowl depth for ya!

    • @stepheneickhoff4953
      @stepheneickhoff4953 7 років тому +4

      Yes, there are no-letter cups in some sizes, but oddly, they fall between the A and B cups in depth. If a certain size comes in both a no-letter cup and an A cup, the A will be deeper... at least, according to Vincent Bach. 3 is one of those sizes, so it would have been interesting to include that here.

    The deeper the cup, the better your sound! There is more effort in the high register when you play the A cup high--But to my ears your "effort" sounds quite beautiful on the A & B. --It's clear for gigs that it's probably impossible to play your high register material on the A & B, but your tone really sounds great and clear, less pinched on the deeper cup sizes. Thanks, but...next time you get serious about playing lead, TRY a Bach 1 1/2 D or E because it will give you a closer lead or commercial type sound. It still won't be exactly right, but much better than a warm muffled sound I am quite positive you got on the 1C. If you get more serious, Get a few variations of the Bob Reeves mouthpieces and they have a comparison chart to approximate the 1C if you really like that, but can modify it to get a much more appropriate lead trumpet sound. GOOD LUCK!

    Kurt, If you play a double G, altissimo register G, with a deep cup, as demonstrated by yourself in this video, you're going to hear a beautiful double high G sounding very mellow. The reason for a shallow cup is to make producing the note easier.
    Many players scream out a note on the trumpet and brag that they played a high ,double G.
    You can play a double G as you demonstrate in this video on a normal or deep cup mouthpiece, and not sound any higher than the g and octave lower. And yet you are in fact an octave higher and busting your guts.
    Like the girl wrote at Amazon about the Bach 3E mouthpiece I read a few minutes ago.
    A shallow cup mouthpiece, writing about the 3E makes the note easier to play. Not as Much effort required to produce the note.
    You can play a double G as you demonstrated in this video on an mellow A cup Bach mouthpiece, and I could play a loud piecing G an octave lower and some people would be unable to discern the difference in pitch!
    A young woman played a beautiful Herbert L. Clarke solo accompanied by a piano player here on youtube.com. She had beautiful tone throughout her solo using a Bach 1C I think it was. Broke on every high note.

    I first started to play the trumpet on a 7C mouthpiece then in high school was told to get a 5C instead. There's a pretty big difference!

    • @TRUMPETSIZZLE

      You can likely do a lot. With a smaller oral cavity, you have the opportunity for greater compression!

    • @TRUMPETSIZZLE
      @TRUMPETSIZZLE  7 років тому +1

      Well, I already took at that years ago. First, you can't too much on the guy and there is NOTHING with him playing anywhere on youtube. Also, little to know student reviews from his personal students or players that have read the method. Certainly, no video reviews by the same crowd. Last: Lowell Little, Gordon, Stamps, and some others seem to have similar stuff that i bet....Charles got from them! So players aren't going to fare much better with this book unfortunately.

    Hey Kurt! My name is Ryan, and was looking for some advice with the breaks from Double G to Double A. I struggle to get a decent A out on most days but have my good days every so often and actually get a nice powerful tone on it. Is there anything different with the embiture or compression of air? Anything helps, thanks Mr. Thompson!

    • @TRUMPETSIZZLE
      @TRUMPETSIZZLE  7 років тому +1

      Hi Ryan. First, are you studying with a teacher who is a master of the upper register? That would be my first suggestion. 2nd, lack of lip strength tends to be the culprit for most player's breaks in that range! www.trumpetsizzle.com 🙂🙂🙂

    • @MGNarwhals
      @MGNarwhals 7 років тому +1

      Kurt Thompson yes I am actually taking lessons with Jordan Hoffman, and we have recently went over the upper register and he was able to get me to a solid Double C, it was there all along, i was just not useing proper technique and my eyes have opened immensely 🎺
