Probably not a great idea to ask people if they’re native. I can go into detail but unfortunately there’s racism and classism against people of native origin, by the ruling elite.

    • @MrSunturion
      @MrSunturion 2 роки тому +7

As far as asking about the "Native" thing in Peru goes? YES most of us here are Mestizo (mixed Ancestry of European (mostly Spaniard) and Native (mostly Andean). BUT! That is FAR as you can go with THAT in Majority of the Coastal Cities. But be CAREFUL with that, cause most Peruvians DON'T take kindly to that (I actually love it because I grew up in the US) but for the most Part. Peruvians have a HUGE Complex about that. So you may want to tone down on asking People about the whole "Native" thing. In the High altitude Cities, like Cusco and Arequipa and also the small Andean Towns yes. The People there have a more accepting Mentality about it, so it's cool there. So keep that mind Guys. Welcome to Peru and Enjoy your Visit. 🇵🇪

I'm a Canadian from Montreal married to a Peruvian and live in Lima part of the year. So glad you guys are enjoying my adopted hometown. For sure Miraflores is one of the upscale sections of town. To be sure there are some very rough areas of the city that are a great contrast to Miraflores in many ways. ( loads of trash, lots of traffic and not green at all). But all said I Love Lima and whenever I land at Jorge Chavez Airport I'm so glad to be home. The food and the people make it my favorite South American city. ( Santiago, Chile and BA, Argentina are also great plus Guatemala City in Central America is underrated. I went to Peru (from Sao Paulo)for my first vacation ever, in 2004 - stayed around for almost a month (including Inca Trail) and loved everywhere I went. In Lima only 3 days, but very good impressions of the city. From there to now, everywhere I´ve read is that it is way more organized, clean and rich. Go to the historical center. The San Francisco Cathedral - and its Catacombs - is really great!. And I remember walking around in there and seeing some Chinatown portal - but it was almost 20 years ago, so who knows. For food, try the Ceviche, is wonderful - just be carefull that it´s super spicy.

    As someone from Lima:
    1) yes, there are a whole bunch of buses that 90% of the times are the reason for traffic, but they're public transport used by the majority of the population
    2) there is no underground metro, i think that was a parking lot or something else. You can do public transport by taxi, bus, the electric train or the metropolitano (which is a more decent bus, kind of a metro that has a set route and stations).
    3) i don't really understand what sebastian was trying to say, maybe something about the way you should edit te shit of the chicha, with the name under it and then he said that when you go to cusco, you should walk slowly because the body is not used of the altitude and you could have the feeling of lacking oxygen. (Thats called soroche) To help the dizzyness you can chew coca leaves of coca candy (it's just coca, not the processed drug)
    4) 10% tip is completely ok, it is always nice for the workers to get a tip
    5) the lady at the restaurand said "voy a traer salsas" which means "I'm going to get the sauces" (as in ketchup/mayo/etc.)
    6) other national beers are cusqueña, cristal, la peruana and golden for example
    7) for "cheers", we say "salud!"
    8) the cats in parque kennedy were brought many years ago to get rid of a mouse plague, which they did, but then they just stayed there
    9) lima is actually dessert but because of its location next to the pacific ocean, it is very humid. Thats why you can see a lot of clouds even though it barely rains. Fun fact: some people call the city "Lima la Gris" (=Lima the grey) because of the clouds always blocking the nice blue sky.
    10) chifas are tge restaurants that serve a fusion of peruvian and chinese gastronomy. Where did the chinese come from? Back in 1849 the president Ramon Castilla promised to get rid of slavery, which caused the lacking of workforce. This is why a massive chinese migration happened, they were called "culíes" and they worked for the most part in the fields. Unfortunately many abuses and injustices took place but they had no choice but to stay. Many formed families and both chinese and peruvian culture were mixed.
You have definetly been to really nice places in Lima, theres still a lot you can see and do. Hope you had a great time and I'm really glad you liked my city!! Cool video

Great video! I am a Peruvian living overseas and your video made me homesick. Miraflores is one of the nicest districts in Lima, relatively safer and tidier than other areas. Be careful in Lima, as it is not very safe. Miraflores gives a very misleading first impression of Lima. I would be very careful filming with a big camera. Areas closer to downtown are more dangerous, as well as some areas in the far north, south and east of Lima, and districts near the airport. Enjoy food in Lima (Ivana is right, it is a gastronomic city) and the museums, perhaps Larco Museum and the National Museum of Archeology and History in Pueblo Libre district are the best. About the best beer, get Cerveza Cusqueña, you won't regret it! Enjoy Peru!

In November 2019 I spent 10 days in Miraflores and loved it! I stayed in an airbnb about a 3-minte walk from JFK Park and walked the same streets as you're walking in this video.
FYI Lima has LOTS of poor neighborhoods. Miraflores isn't one of them and it's the most popular place to stay for tourists. But if you go the heart of downtown you'll see poverty.
As for food, Lima is the ceviche capital of the world. You can't leave without having ceviche.
Also, yes Chifa food! Lima has without a doubt the best Chinese food of any city in Latin America. I wasn't aware of a specific Chinatown but Chifa restaurants are everywhere. Obviously some better than others. Ask locals for their favorites.
Sandwiches. Don't miss La Lucha Sangucheria Criolla which has a couple of branches in Miraflores. Fantastic and cheap sandwiches.

This is the first that I'm watching one of your videos. I'm from Lima so the reason why we have many buses is because we don't have metro. What you saw in park kennedy was a place to pay the underground parking. About the church there is a huge chatolic influence so you guys will see many churches all over the city. Miraflores is one of the most touristic places is really beautiful. Lima is huge it will be nice if you could explore more places that aren't only Miraflores or Barranco. Try to go to Antigua Taberna Queirolo to try some pisco sour in Pueblo Libre if you are overthere you should try to go to Museo Larco as well. If at any time you run out of money there are many cheap menus in Miraflores in Calle Berlin around 12 soles (the menu usually comes with a starter, a main dish and a drink) You should definitely go to downtown Lima (centro historico de Lima) is really nice as well. In the case of the food I'd recommend you to try ceviche, arroz con mariscos, pollo a la brasa, chicharron de pescado, chicharrones, seco, anticuchos, humitas, picarones, mazamorra morada and arroz con pato. Also due to safety I'll recommend you to always take taxis from apps rather from streets you can use uber, beat, didi or cabify. Enjoy your time in my country 😁

As an advice don't go out of that zone!! bc at least Lima is not the "safest" there are a lot of cases people not returning with their phone or their wallet, especially don't really walk around with ur phone or camera on the hand. You can only see "clean and safe city" in Miraflores and San Isidro, maybe some other districts too but not everywhere. Lima is a dangerous city depending on the place, for example where I live is pretty much safe but if you go like 2 or 3 blocks away then it becomes a lil bit dangerous. Miraflores is a good destination for tourist, a bit expensive for locals, but a nice choice to walk around. For example the meal for 2 that you paid 66 soles is a bit expensive, in other places you could eat like that for 12USD. Both of you could even get a whole meal for 10USD or less if you go to other districts. (btw I think it wasn't worth it bc the plates you chose are not the best options, delicious, but I wouldn't recommend that for tourists.) Anyway, thanks for coming to Lima and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Huge city (it's a lot bigger than any city in the US with the exception of LA and NY), great food everywhere you go, paragliding, surfing, cycling, heavy traffic. Stay in Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro, Magdalena or Jesus Maria. There are other nice places in Lima but far from everything. It is not very common in Lima to ask if someone is native, but you can ask if they preserve customs or traditions of some ancient cultures. It is difficult to find people in Lima who still believe in the moon, the sun, the pachamama, the apus, but in the provinces, the sierra or the selva you will still find people who maintain those beliefs. It is beautiful to see my city from a Canadian perspective, I hope to be there soon, I would love to see Vancouver!

I’m Limeña but I’ve lived in the US since I was 8 and I never really encountered questions about my native ancestry until about high school. We were going over the Spanish Casta System and someone said “ hey you’re Peruvian! Aren’t you like half native?” And I stopped to think and thought “oh yeah, I guess I am.” I remember that in Peru (at least in Lima) no one asked about that, and if anyone ever did, like for census, you’d just state “mestizo” (mixed blood) or any other ethnic group. Although a lot of people at the time would say “white” because that’s what was desired and you’d ignore your native blood. Many Limeños come from migrant families that moved from the sierra (mountains) and loose their native traditions in favor of more Western customs. For example, my father’s from Pucallpa (an Amazonian city) and my mother’s family is originally from Cajamarca in the Peruvian highlands. Yet I have no direct connection to my native ancestry. I know for a fact I have native blood, but I can’t say for certain which ethnic groups I come from. I’ve tried asking family members but they can’t give me a specific answer. It’s very sad that we loose our native traditions the moment we migrate to larger cities.

Peru is not Lima, and Miraflores, La Molina or San Isidro are not Lima. Machu Picchu is not Peru either. The beautiful parts of Perú maybe are those, yes. But the reality is different. It is nice where the tourist is always, but if the tourist goes to poorer districts, he will see the true face of Peru. Peru is a beautiful country, rich in culture and food, but unfortunately there is a lot of poverty.
