I’ve been thinking of getting this version for my rebuilt chevy 350 on my k5. I like how you can move the module away from heat unlike the new EFI systems. 10 years is pretty damn good! I may get this version. Thanks for the video
I have the newer version, the Atomic 2 and I cannot praise that enough. One of the things that I'm glad they kept when they went to the newer version was the boosters in the middle that help keep that carburetor look. As far as I know this is the only system that uses the boosters in the middle of the venturies. As far as the ECU being on the side of the throttle body now, I've actually worked on the vehicle after it's been running and at no point did I ever feel like the side of the throttle body was hot. I think with the constant airflow thru the TB and massive amount of fuel flowing through it, it stays cool, because with the new design you have to have a return line so you constantly have fuel flowing through the throttle body. I haven't watched them yet, but I see you have a couple of videos up about the Progression Ignition. That's actually what drew me to your channel, and that's also going to be my next purchase. I'm going to be running a Edelbrock eForce 122 and I love the fact that the Progression system has a MAP sensor and will allow you to retard the timing curve according to boost pressure. ❤ MSD offers an ignition box that does that, too, but they want $700 just for that ignition box, not including the coil and not including the distributor. Since I have limited clearance for the supercharger I can't run an HEI and the only MSD distributor they offer that's compatible with the 6-BTM is the 8750 which is their pro billet distributor. That's another $450. F*kk that! I'll go with the Progression system.
Good review bro! I'd say whilst you're talking about it,just add a little more b roll, so when you said you're in the cuda, show some footage of the cuda! When you're talking about the carb, just include some footage. Subtle change and not much more work, would make a world of difference, still great work though and the editing and video quality is miles better than it has been, plus your on camera presence is so much better, much more relaxed
You’re right about it doesn’t come or work as advertised! My work van is still in the yard , starter went out from starting it 20 times a day! No speedometer, And can’t find the tech on wiring to hook it up! Put the speedometer wires for the transmission controller, tried to talk to tech, all I got was, “You put the speedometer wire in with the harness? “ , It should work! It doesn’t! Should have done an LS swap and maybe I’d be riding! This easy , plug and play technology has broke me!
I’ve been running my Atomic(1st version) for the last 8 years. About the only time it’s given me any issues is when I start messing with the settings. Once it’s dialed in, it runs great you just have to resist the urge to keep screwing with it.
My Air Fuel ratio is set at 14.9:1 due to the fact that my O2 sensor is mounted further back then I would like it to be and it reads both banks instead of one.
Great review.... 10 yrs that pretty good guess if you stash away available replacement parts it would go for a long time. How would you compare the mileage to a carb?
The mileage is marginally better than a carb setup, but I think in my case that’s mostly due to my tune being more on the side of performance, last time I check I was doing about 18 miles to the gallon
Any issues after or during 10 years of operation? BTW, looks like Holley will continue support for the original unit, at least parts are still available at least for now, maybe stock up. Not sure about the new version, also you using duel plane intake? Thanks, great video, and great ride.
The only issue I’ve had was my IAC valve was starting to stick a little clean up took care of that, and yes I intend to stockpile some of these parts while I can. As for the intake manifold, I first had an Eddelbrock dual plane on it but it always ran a little rich so I now have an old Holley Street Dominator low rise single plane and it really works good now. I’m glad you liked the video!
Appreciated the video, a good explanation of the system. I've had mine for about 5 years and very happy with it. Like many others I did struggle with stalling when stopping from what appears to poor operation/design of the IAC. Overcame it by setting the IAC to 100 rpm below the mechanical idle (blade) setting and its much better. Have you had this issue?
Yes and no, I had to make the same adjustments but only because I optimized the system for the demands of the size and preform every of my engine. I’m working on a deep dive of my particular setup and tuning settings I used and how I managed to make it work for me. I’ll be putting out that video soon.
@@tailsfromthejunkyard1023 @70xU1 I'd love to hear about what you did to set up the IAC. I too have that stalling issue, but have driven my car very little as a result.
@@browniedavis I set IAC 100rpm below my target idle and then used the manual blade settings on the Atomic to set desired idle speed. In my case IAC to 750 blades set to idle at 850. Worked ok No stalling and stable The IAC's job is to maintain the set idle but I don't think MSD has got that bit right so using the manual method basically disables interference in idle condition by the IAC. I also read/found out that each time you adjust the idle setting (IAC or manually) power cycle the MSD so it reads the new TPS setting.
@@70XU1 Thanks. My system came to me second hand and I have set it up per the instructions, but figured I was doing something very wrong or had damaged components. Depending on precipitation, I may get out are try some things this weekend.
@@Allianceoffroad nope, no issues with mine at all, but then again I don’t live in a particularly hot climate. I have the pump mounted in such a way that flowing air cools it down pretty good. However if I were in a climate 10 to 20 degrees hotter I would probably run a return line to prevent vapor locking and cavitation
No you do not have to have the controller connected at all times but it makes it easier to monitor the system operation and what’s going on within the unit itself but it’s strictly optional
