7.3 Powerstroke Misfire - Valve Cover Gasket Wiring Failure Analysis

  • This valve cover gasket was on a 2001 F350 with a 7.3 Powerstroke diesel that had a severe misfire. It had to be started with ether, and would barely stay running. The truck didn't even have enough power to move itself. Diagnostics revealed trouble codes for all the injectors on the left (even numbered) cylinder bank, high to low side open; P1272, P1274, P1276 and P1278. The valve cover gasket and under valve cover harness were both replaced, and the problem was resolved. This video shows some of the troubleshooting steps that can be done to check the physical wiring and connections to the valve cover and injectors.
    If there is a specific topic you'd like to see a video about, please send me a message or leave a comment. When I encounter a truck with a related problem, I'll do my best to make a video and post it.

    Great job, and thanks. That's my next project my 2000 has 230K, sensors were going bad, now lack of power and loping, will check fuel pressure see where I am there, then move on valve covers.

    I bought ultra power ones off rock auto and had to reseal it with gasket maker almost a year later. I inspected the wires and sure enough they were to cracking. I left it alone and put it back together, time went on the truck runs fine but I'm suspecting there is something wrong now, unburnt fuel coming out the exhaust getting on it. I'm gonna start back on it when I put my new cover on.

    new sub! loved how thorough and easy to follow your video is! I did everything and turns out all my injectors and glowplugs are ready correctly. any idea why im having gray smoke that smells heavily like diesel and shuddering at 2200 rpms at every gear? 1994.5 f350 M/T

    in my van I've had the same problem in it to a code for the number 8 and number 5 injector. I reach my hand back there to the harness that plugs into the valve cover and got shocked. when I touched it it immediately cause the engine to shut off. I would assume that I have a bad harness if it's shocking me when I touch some of the wires. would this cause injectors to not fire properly? thanks

    Hi there I'm doing the same test as you but I'm getting .2 ohms on each connector my question is this number is good or bad ? My truck is misfiring in all 8 cylinders and has the original cover gasket with around 480k miles.

    Or you could use DieselTechRon's quarter fix. Do the replacement gaskets for these come with the shim upgrade like the later 7.3?

    • @PikachuG5
      @PikachuG5  3 роки тому

      The quarter trick isn't for this problem. The quarter and the shim are to keep the inner connector from unseating from the gasket. I really don't remember if the shims come with the gaskets now or not . . .

    Any problem of a 7.3 that overheated, now it starts very slow, and it runs for 20 minutes and it starts losing power

    • @PikachuG5
      @PikachuG5  4 роки тому

      From what you describe, the symptoms sound like a high pressure oil system problem. HPOP, IPR valve, injector o-rings could possibly be the cause. Do you have a scan tool you can use to monitor (and preferably log) ICP sensor voltage, IPR duty cycle and fuel injection pulse width during startup and while driving? ForScan is a good free option for WinD'ohs or ForScan Lite (paid app) for Android.

    Awesome video sir!!!!!! Is there any way you can post a link to the hardwired gaskets you refer to in the video????? I have an '01 and I would love to eliminate any potential problems in the future when I fix this issue with mine.

    • @PikachuG5

      I can now confirm from personal experience with the Dorman gaskets that the insulation on the wires from the gasket to the injectors and glow plugs does indeed become brittle, crack and fall off. I can't recommend using them. The OEM gaskets and harnesses are still the best parts to use.

    • @PikachuG5
      @PikachuG5  5 років тому

      No, this one ran rough as soon as it started. Do you have any codes set? It will take more than a generic OBD-II scanner to read them . . .

    • @PikachuG5
      @PikachuG5  5 років тому

      @@fordnut4914 Ah, then you'll probably need Navistar's software or a compatible aftermarket product to read it. I've seen cases where rough running when warm was a symptom of an issue in the high pressure oil system, but I'd need to see the numbers before going down that path. The engine oil is in the full range on the dipstick, right? That's an often overlooked item that can cause poor running since the engine oil serves as the hydraulic oil for the fuel injectors.

    I have a feeling this is the problem I am having in my truck at the moment. I have a 1998 E-350 7.3 ambulance that has been having trouble starting, bunch of white smoke and can’t get it to kick on. I did a resistance test on the ucvh but everything read as open. Got new gaskets and glow plugs to pop in hopefully it fixes my problem

    • @MichaelBone_
      @MichaelBone_ 2 роки тому

      Did you install and any update on if it solved the problem?

    • @LIG_MA24
      @LIG_MA24 2 роки тому

      @@MichaelBone_ yeah so I ended up changing out all glow plugs and both under cover valve harnesses. I changed the oil, put on a new oil filter and changed out my flow plug relay because it had failed too. Ended up having to remove and replace the passenger side pig tail because the factory one had melted and I could see bare copper.
      I tried to get it started after that work and it gave me a hard time, I popped open the fuel bowl and removed the fuel filter to see if maybe the filter was clogged. Ended up turning over and firing right up without the filter. I was able to find a Ford replacement a week or so after and I think I may have gotten air in the fuel line because it is having a hard time starting again. Bought 2 brand new motor craft 850cca batteries that ended up needing to be swapped out within a week due to a manufacturer defect.
      At this point I have a plan to push air from the fuel tank through the lift pump up to the fuel bowl using some compressed air to hopefully clear the lines and get it going again.

      I've seen that a bunch of times with Dorman gaskets. As a general rule, I won't use a Dorman product to replace anything that takes more than 5 minutes to get to. I always prefer OEM parts. Aftermarket stuff has bitten me too many times.
