Veni, Veni Emmanuel is a synthesis of the great "O Antiphons" that are used for Vespers during the octave before Christmas (Dec. 17-23). These antiphons are of ancient origin and date back to at least the ninth century.
I'm only 13 years old, and i ADORE being Roman Catholic!! I go to mass every Sunday, but my favorite is the Christmas and advent masses!
Bruh you’re 21 now
Time flies
Ave Christus Rex!
Stay faithful and continue to seek God. I pray for blessings for you.
Mans probably in seminary now

Oh wow, your nearly the same year as me, maybe a year or so younger. Are you 21 now?
My father sings in this choir =)
Same
It's becoming an annual tradition for me to come back and listen to this in the weeks up to Christmas. And that major chord at the end still sends a shiver up my spine. A happy and peaceful christmas to everyone reading this.
I'm Catholic and never heard such beautiful singing. The N.O has stripped us and robbers of so much. These divine expressions of worship are so soul satifiying and beautiful. We must revive a love and preference for them. Our cathedrals were built to sing songs like this in them. Let us do so.

Many city youth & adult choirs still sing in cathedral churches at least 2 concerts a year. They are amazing.
In our Church we have.

The Chants of the Church are still sung, admittedly not enough. If they were sung often they might lose their appeal and people might become bored. Too few choirs are able to sing them and too few congregations are able to sing them. In fact, very few congregations want to sing and they should. It is almost as though they are ashamed to sing. In Spain, everyone knows the word to the hymns and join in without hymnals. St Augustine said, "He who sings praises God twice."
One time in my life I would love to hear this inside of a gothic cathedral or a basilica. The echos would make it more majestic.
Oh my god Imagine how beautiful that would be!
OH GOD, IMAGINE THIS IN A GOTHIC CATHEDRAL ONE OCTAVE LOWER.....

Thank You for posting this, one of my most favorite hymns. The great thing about the "Veni Emmanuel" is that it is an Advent hymn, not a Christmas Carol. The theology in it is quite precise, especially in the Latin. It focuses on the period of time mankind languished from the rebellion against our creator, until He Himself came to bring us back. In our very rejection of him, our salvation was enabled. O felix culpa!
try popping into a cathedral when the choir are practising near Christmas time. That happened to me once on December 21st one year, it was raining loads, so I ran to the cathedral and I was the only person in there, choir was practising and it was bloody stunning. Made all the better for the spontaneity.
Lots of people think latin, classic music is boring and too sad. It is false! This kind of church music is amazing!
I was in Hungary in a catholic Highscool in the time of Kommunism. We have got a lot of Music from Kodály. I just loved it. This is also a very good performance thanks for uploading:)) Jöjj el jöjj el Emmanuel:))
Thanks for comment! Did they also use his method for teaching music in your school? Lots of interesting stuff about his method! I played in band, but have never learned to properly sing...

I am Maronite Catholic and I think it's one of the most beautiful things in the world.
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14
Many comments about religion and thanking God for the Music… well, I am atheist and I think the world will be much better without religions.
I am here to honor Kodaly’s music, the lyrics could be in another language, talking about whatever and still will be a great piece of music. Because music is the universal language and it’s above any God’s invented by us.
Even if one is atheist, let us not hold hatred for them. Especially with the sadness that came out of Connecticut. Let us love each other. As a Catholic, I hold the belief that we should love all.
O, truly, Emmanuel, come and save this world from itself.
I never knew Latin could be such a beautiful language. I guess any language that brings Glory to Christ is beautiful.
Chris Melvin I couldn't agree with you more!
Absolutely!
That means all language is beautiful. For all tongues are made to glorify the Lord :)
does that include the part where pilate sentenced jesus to the cross IN LATIN?
@@Chipmunkman69 soooo? Does that also mean that judas who used the aramac language to betray our lord meant that the language is evil?
Sono italiano e mi ritengo fortunato perché capisco il latino. È una lingua essenziale e musicale. Perfetta per i canti e gli inni a Dio.
Hands down, this is the best UA-cam version of this hymn 5 years running.
Brian Dolinar agree.
There's also a more modern version performed by tyler joseph, you should look it up(its not in latin though)
Enya has an excellent version
It´s a shame that there isn´t an english version that is as "accurate" as this one
This is absolutely beautiful. I wish they still taught Latin in school. Why did they ever stop. It's magnificent.
Angie Esquivel They do here in Germany. Alternatively you can choose French. But pretty much everyone takes it off the time table as soon as they have the certificate.
(You start in year 6, you get it in year 9*, so in year 10 it's no longer there for most. Add 6 to the grade to get the age
*Then you're able to under some conditions (like always) get it off your timetable)
Latin classes are still available in many schools - both public and private.
I'm still learning Latin at my school?
I took latin in school and i would call it the wort decision of my life.
Angie Esquivel in France they still teaching Latin till high school.
Emmanuel is Jesus, this is written before Jesus was born and they were waiting for him (Emmanuel)
Wow! I have always loved this piece, and this is a beautiful interpretation of it! I love the rythm and soft/strong voices, the nuances ...
Im Eastern Orthodox and i love this version of O Come Emanuel
thanks for using our icons in the background ;)
Veni, veni, Emmanuel
captivum solve Israel,
qui gemit in exsilio,
privatus Dei Filio.
Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel.
Veni, O Sapientia,
quae hic disponis omnia,
veni, viam prudentiae
ut doceas et gloriae.
Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel.
Veni, veni, Adonai,
qui populo in Sinai
legem dedisti vertice
in maiestate gloriae.
Gaude, gaude Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel.
Veni, O Iesse virgula,
ex hostis tuos ungula,
de spectu tuos tartari
educ et antro barathri.
Gaude, gaude Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel.
Veni, Clavis Davidica,
regna reclude caelica,
fac iter tutum superum,
et claude vias inferum.
Gaude, gaude Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te Israel.
Veni, veni O Oriens,
solare nos adveniens,
noctis depelle nebulas,
dirasque mortis tenebras.
Gaude, gaude Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te Israel.
Veni, veni, Rex Gentium,
veni, Redemptor omnium,
ut salvas tuos famulos
peccati sibi conscios.
Gaude, gaude Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te Israel.

Studying this song right now as part of my professional choir's rep for the Advent season. Very lucky to do so, it's a beautiful piece to sing.
Amazing the music that's been created in praise of God Almighty...
This is without doubt my favourite UA-cam version of this beautiful piece of music!
That major chord at the very end - sends a shiver up my spine.
Happy Christmas everyone.
HI
Yeshua was born on HIS calendar on HIS Feast of Tabernacles. Check out Luke chapter 1 from verse 5 onwards.
Remember when people could enjoy music together without having to argue their differences? Pepperidge Farm Remembers.
Hi there . I know that we should enjoy all our music we choose to listern too like this. This is is heavenly. God is so good and he loves us so much. He wants everyone to go to heaven!. If you want to go to heaven see here ua-cam.com/video/lbb4xwYj19g/v-deo.html .god bless

Even though I'm a Calvinist and this is Catholic, I love listening to it so much. Absolutely beautiful.
Bravissimo my Christian brother! I bid you consider joining Christ's Holy Catholic Church; not the Vatican II Sect, but the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, outside of which there is no salvation.
Emily Lipson Amen! Complete continuity with the beginning, as willed by our Lord. The Gates of Hell cannot prevail against her.
Same here, Jump. I've always loved the way these old advent hymns point back to the Scriptures.
i considerer thar is not problem becousr tha unite of the christian is Christ. in thw wolrd is diferent christian but only see the unity and walk for the uniti. the problems of the past with tha occidental churd tnat in the beginin is tha catholic church not is a problem for 21 century. the unity of the only christianis Jesuchrist
I'm a Calvinist as well ! But I don't think this is solely for Catholics only ?
It means God with us...The word made flesh.
This song is beautiful, the voices are beautiful. What a wonderful gift to have from the Lord. To be able to sing, to his glorious name. And this choir does it wonderfully. I am playing this song right now in my prayer room. Thank you El Rohi (The God that sees me) for this choir,, and the beautiful voice you have given me to praise your name amen.
Best best best version sang a capella on YT.Proper tempo and feel to it.Great.
Absolument magnifique! Une splendeur!

Vive Dieu!
I'm atheist, most of my friends are too. Unfortunately those i use to converse with about music, reject any piece with sacral context. I think this is a regrettable attitude, as -like it or not- much of european musical culture stems from a sacral context. Even though i don't believe in god, i have played the organ and used to sing in a church choir when i was younger and i enjoy art, when it's worth enjoying, regardless of its background. And this is art.
I have been starting my day today with a lit candle, a cup of herbal tea an this. Both composer as well as choir capture the spirit of advent very well here! Thank you very much!
HighCarb Schwabe come come emanuel he is god became man

HI
Jesus / Yeshua was born on the 1st day of HIS Feast of Tabernacles.[ See Luke Chapter1 from Verse 5 onwards ] we are grafted into Israel by believing in Him so we should therefore keep HIS Feasts NOT Pagan Gregorian Calendar ones. Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua.

Très émouvante et très belle interprétation de ce chant. Je ne me lasse pas d'écouter et de ré-écouter ce Veni Veni Emmanuel. C'est un chant très serein, bouleversant.

People need to stop listening to rap and start to listen to this so they can see what all good they can do in this world.
i remember learning this song in Latin I. I had already learned it in English, but it sounded so much more beautiful in Latin.
Woww this liftens my soul!😇
im a catholic and ive gone to the spanish mass all my life and not once have the choirs sang these kind of music.
It only sings in the 4 weeks up to Christmas.
Azért mégiscsak ez a Kodály-feldolgozás a legjobb!
Külön öröm, hogy a fribourgiak ilyen szépen, értőn éneklik.
@kooooopp I'm protestant and I adore this music
Great that your can appreciate our common heritage Jewish, Catholic and Protestant.
As an agnostic who was raised as a Protestant, Catholic music and Orthodox music are both vastly superior to Protestant music.
WONDERFUL!
You and everyone else needs to learn something:
Christianity did not "Come from the Jews or Judaism"-
Christianity came from JESUS CHRIST WHO WAS
THE SON OF MARY AND THE SON OF GOD.
God HAS NO RELIGION.
The apostles, by virtue of their former beliefs, could no
long be "Jewish" upon accepting the divinity of Christ.
And those who 'studied", so to speak, with them and
after their deaths are known as the "Apostolic Fathers"
from whence the Catholic Church sprang.
And "Orthodox", is Catholic as well
The term "Catholic" has a meaning denoting both
purity and universality. To speak of the "catholicity" of a
thing is to describe it as unspoilt and pure. The "Universality" of
Catholicism denotes that Christ came FOR ALL HUMANITY
THE WORLD OVER. "Judaism" maintains that God has a special
plan ONLY FOR A CERTAIN PEOPLE.
That was not Christs message.
That was not Peter and Pauls message.
And Judaism holds that only Spirit can be "God".
The Deciples died as Christians. The early
churches, Catholic.

I'm atheist, I've never bothered with religion of any kind. Not to say I'm opposed, I just figure it starts too many conflicts. But this is one of my favourite songs. I have sung it in both Latin and English, it's nice, to see here in the comments that it has overcome so many different cultures and religions. Bless you all.
Buon Natale 2019 , con tanta gioia nei nostri cuori!

Gracias por subirlo.
Amazing
I wish I understood Latin. I'm a Anglican Christian and I'd LOVE to sing in one of these choirs.
I took 2 years of Latin in high school and I only knew some of the words. The words we learned aren’t really religious words
You can learn it. However, you will have to learn the Ecclesiastical kind (used by the Catholic Church), not the Classical kind (spoken by the Romans).
we need the latin mass back, asap......
Raphael Dominic AMEN
Vatican II supported such a thing. Latin is definitely a language that should be appreciated throughout generations.
Nothing better than a church service in a language no one understands. Makes you wonder who the service is actually meant to serve.
@@Adam-uw2ms God. It's meant to serve God.

I love Latin... I would visit the Vatican if I could be guaranteed this stuff.
The traditional music stems from a 15th Century French processional hymn for Franciscan nuns, but may also have 8th Century Gregorian origins. It is one of the most solemn Advent hymns. One widespread practice in the Catholic Church has 2 subsequent verses sung each week of Advent, beginning with the 1st Sunday of Advent as verses 1 & 2. The 2nd Sunday of Advent, verses 3 & 4 are sung. On the 3rd Sunday of Advent, verses 5 & 6. On the 4th Sunday of Advent however, verses 1 & 7 are then sung.
Parallel to the old covenant in which 3,000 Israelites are executed, the new covenant, which was foreshadowed in Jeremiah 31:31-34, came into being with the descent of the Holy Spirit in tongues of fire onto the apostles. This event is Pentecost, which celebrates the birth of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. On that day, 3,000 people came into the Church. Between then and now, apostolic succession existed without interruption, and we are on the 265th of an unbroken lineage of popes.
Jesus resurrected on Sunday. He was crucified on the 14th day of Nisan, which fell on a Friday in 33 AD. At sunset, the Passover cedar and Shabbat began. The day following the first Shabbat of Passover is the Festival of First Fruits, which is a grain offering that if acceptable enables all other offerings to be accepted. Jesus is the first fruits and fulfills the functions of the sabbath and the Jewish holy days. Is that fair enough?
C'est tres bon! J'adore "veni, veni." Je veuille etre aux votre concert, mais malheureux, je ne vive pas en France. Mais avez des bon temps et un Joyeux Noel!!
Uh who do you think was around at the time? Catholics are the Christians you speak of, there was no other Christians till later. We have a unbreakable line of apostolic succession, and history to back up this claim. Who said I was condemning you? I said "It sounds like you worship scripture" What you do with your life up until your death is up to you.
Philosophy is what is behind every genre of art. The philosophy that permeates music today is based on the idea that the greatest good is what we can get for ourselves (without God) or at 'best', what we can do for one another. In reality, the greatest good is the one true God Himself, and music such as this reminds us of that fact.
Amazing how a song can unite religious factions. And another amazing thing is Kodály.
Thank you for this, it is beautiful and how it should be sung. I am in Netherlands and in Dutch it is a catastrophe. I know six languages and this is the first I have encountered that is totally not suited to any music.
We sing this every year for our schools bells and carols. It’s beautiful in the cathedral, with each of the choir members holding only a candle.
would be nice if they showed the lyrics DURING ALL OF THE SINGING and not just during PART OF IT

wow, this is the most beautiful version of the hymn I've heard!
Three weeks 'till Christmas. Come. Let us prepare for the birthday of our Heavenly King.
There is a reason why Kodaly was always more popular than Bartok. Bartok might command the opera houses, but Kodaly speaks to the heart.
Merry Christmas!
Sometimes, we sing it in Latin. Once does not have to be Catholic to sing it in Latin. It is beautiful sung in either language.
