- Located off Morocco, Spain's Canary Islands are facing their worst migrant crisis since 2006. In just one year, 30,000 migrants have arrived on the archipelago. The smallest island, El Hierro, saw 4,000 arrive in January alone. Despite locals and NGOs coming together to help out, El Hierro is overwhelmed. FRANCE 24’s Clara Le Nagard and Armelle Exposito report, with Sarah Morris.

Of course many people have given up and they see the western nations on social media and they want a better easier wealthier life. Can you blame them? But do not emigrate to Chile or the United States, Brazil, Canada, Peru and Mexico, those countries have many problems migrating to countries like Uruguay, Paraguay, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Belize, Suriname, Costa Rica and Panama. Now there is a program so that migrants, when you show up at the border between the United States and Mexico, can apply or they can take you to go to Spain and Canada between those governments.

We already know by looking at mainland Spain, Italy France actually all of mainland Europe along with Ireland and the UK. And you can see how tribal trouble travels.

You never see any of the media outlets following the money and finding out who's buying the boats, who's selling them, who's making them. Not many companies make RIBs. People are getting rich off this, and I would wager that a financial investigation would reveal the obvious - it's not just the "people smugglers" charging the fares to get on the boats.

Watched a separate documentary about senegalese migrants recently- telling them about the troubles at sea is not a deterrent as they still believe the grass is greener. Also, destroying the boats is pointless as passage via boats especially fishing boats is abundant there. Creating an environment that promises immediate return/removal would be more effective.

And don't take into account rent, food✓✓,bills etc as they believe they're exempt and entitled to all those pesky things to be given to them for free. Being told no often elicits a violent response. I've experienced it myself several times when I was a housing officer, telling people they're not eligible for council housing. 😠🇬🇧
We can't and shouldn't take all of the people from the third world countries in. It's just not sustainable or possible. They should make their own successful societies just like our ancestors did for us. I never agree that we are born privileged, we are the results of our ancestors being responsible.

@@donnabeuth3193 true, my mom works with Eastern Europeans who have rents paid for, benefits and refuse to work more than 20 hours/week so they don't lose access to it. At the same time, they easily spend their money on material goods and have had more holidays in one year than we have in our lives. You can't really win if you try to be a normal, law abiding, contributing member of society in the UK.

I would not call an 18 year old a child. This was an interesting documentary, well made. I had no idea the Canary Islands were going through all this.
Senegal is not a country people have to flee... most of the time people already in Europe tell those at home lies how well everything's for them here. E.g. barkeeper of hotel tells he is hotel manager etc.

Immigrants in Spain are immediately attended by doctors and in hospitals. Spanish have to wait up to 10 months for an appointment with their doctor. Another so many months to see a specialist, another so many months for a scan, and easily 2 years for an operation. But not so for immigrants.

The people of the Canary Islands are known for their generosity and kindness. In contrast, it is unlikely that migrants would receive the same level of treatment in other parts of Europe, such as Greece. Additionally, Mauritania and Senegal need to take more effective measures to stop illegal migration by sea, which is extremely dangerous and has a high mortality rate. European countries should also address the root causes of this issue to prevent it from worsening.
