Stumbled across this 5-year-old vid accidentally just now. It's surprising how exactly this mirrors my own experience - Energel ink in a Pilot G2 Pro body is my go-to pen, the most comfortable writing implement I've ever owned. I have big hands, so a standard pen body is generally too thin to be comfortable for me; I tend to grip harder, which causes fatigue and aching fingers. A thicker body, with rubberized grips, is much more comfortable and stresses my fingers far less.
I started using standard Pilot G2's about a decade ago, and I still think they're great pens. But when I discovered the Pentel Energel, I completely abandoned the G2 ink. The Energel ink is sharper, darker, dries instantly, and writes more smoothly than the the G2. The difference is very subtle, but if you compare the two, one after the other, in the same body, you'll feel a little more skipping and catching with G2 ink than with Energel ink.
During the years that I was using G2s, I picked up a few G2 Pros on clearance at a book store for about $3 each. Those bodies have been my go-to pen for at least eight years now, though I switched to Energen ink about 3 or 4 years ago. I haven't been getting refills, I've just been getting new Energel pens in multipacks at local stores, but I'm going to start getting refills in multipacks now and save myself a few bucks.
The ink cartridges from Energel pens are about 1/16-inch longer than a standard G2 ink cartridge. They fit in my G2 Pro, but the click mechanism doesn't work properly. There is no cap on an Energen cartridge, though, so I simply shave 1/16" off the top of each cartridge with an Xacto knife to make its length perfectly match the G2 cartridge, and it fits perfectly. I know, that's an extra step that shouldn't be necessary, but I don't go through ink fast enough for it to be that big a deal.
I actually ordered a nice-looking red G2 Limited from Amazon last week (should arrive in a couple of days). The G2 Limited supposedly has an all-metal body, hence the extra weight. I look forward to trying it out with Energel ink.

After all these years, it's still in my arsenal of go-to pens, and I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's just an excellent combo, and Energel ink can't be beat.

I have used those Pentel Energel for about 3yrs now. Great pen and refill! But cracked barrels are no fun. I have used #5 O-rings(Menard's Hardware) to help prevent cracking. Place the O-ring between the barrel and the grip section. Twist until it is snug(one tenth of a turn). Prevents over-tightening. All good. I would email Pentel and mention the cracking issue. Maybe if enough of us write-in, they will address the issue. Thanks for the video.

I'm impressed at your solution. I just bought a metal pen body and replaced the refill with the Energel.

Thanks for this video and all the other videos. I kind of went down the rabbit-hole in watching them after stumbling across this one earlier today.
It’s been many, many years since I used the Energel pens. I stopped using them because I experienced the same issue with the barrels cracking-I even wrote to Pentel to let them know. I’m not a fan of the G2 pen (Uniball Signo have been my go-to pens) but I did order the G2 limited on Amazon along with Energel refills. Thanks for the suggestion.

I really hope the combination works out. I'm not sure why the Energel barrel is so terrible when they've taken the time to make such a wonderful ink. Let me know how you like it!

Most standard retractable refills will fit into each other's barrels. I use uniball signo, zebra sarasa, and energels all interchangeably. Pentel have a metallic pen barrel too, but with no rubber grip. I like the clip on the 2nd generation sarasa, so I put a lot of inks in there :)

hi, i find that the pilot G2 refill and the Pentel energel refills though same length are not exactly the same dimensions, it looks like the Pilot's head tip is fatter than the energel's; and so if i use pilot bodies like G2 plastic or G2 metropolitan with Energel refill, the refill either does not lock on the body spring or it goes out of the tip hole and wiggles a little when you write (due to the Energel tip being thinner than the pilot body's hole; i have not gotten hold of a G2 limited body so i dont know if it will be same as the metropolitan; do you notice any wiggling using the Limited's body with the energel refill?

Pentel makes excellent products. Pilot is quiet, higher quality, sedated; funnctional. When that magic happens when a raw human is writing-time traveling- across some inscrutible tract of ineffable time, the pilot wins. Quiet. Write on the "mark". Nyuk nyuk nyuk. You got it write the first time. Love it.

The G2 Limited is a tad heavier than the Alloy, but the difference is hardly noticeable. The Limited is more stylish. The pen body has a more silky feel to it. Swap out the G2 refill for a Pentel Energel (I prefer either the 0.5 or 0.7 needletip) refill and you've got yourself one hell of a writing pen. The G2 Limited wins hands down!

Recently I learned about two nicer pens in the Energel line that are fully metal and quite inexpensive.
One is called Energel Alloy, and the other is Energel Philography - comes in click type and twist mechanisms. I don’t think that either pen has that squishy type grip that’s used so frequently these days (a plus for me).
There seems to be frequent price reductions on both model- based on the color of the pen. The lowest I’ve seen is about $6 for the Alloy, and $11-15 for the Philography.
    I really enjoy your channel.
