Great video. You are the reason I started scrolling over 20 years ago. Bought a cheap harbor freight Scrollsaw, ordered some spiral blades, followed your videos and never looked back. Now, just doing it better with the Pegas saw that I bought from you. Oh, and you can teach an old dog new tricks. I have never enjoyed cutting the tiny pieces as you demonstrated on this video. Come to find out I have been starting from the outside and going in causing cracking and breakage. Cool tip, starting from the inside and cutting out. You the man, Scroll On. 👍
Great video, but where do you get a 5 inch pin end spiral blade? I can't seem to find them. One person even told me they don't make them with pin ends.
Theres a world of difference with a cheap Scroll saw versus a more expensive one if only for blade changing just bought the Axminster Pro Scroll sa with Pegas blade holders excellent
Charles you my friend are an awesome scroller I tried the spiral blade and I like using them I just can keep on the line I don’t no if I titan the blade to much or not tite enough thanks for the great videos

Well Charles I learned a lot from watching your videos and I still watch your videos when you post a new videos I love the cool scroll sawing you do I try to do it but it’s not that good yet
Thank you Charles for making this video. I have only been scroll sawing for the last 7 yrs or so and yet I still learned something new that would help from being frustrated while cutting. And that is that it is much much easier to avoid cutting on the side of the line, wood that you want to keep by simply lightly shading the waste side of the line. Wow! Of course that trick can also be useful too for cutting wood using regular single sided scroll saw blades as well. Very handy when making several very intricate designs where it can easily get a bit confusing during the cutting process of the design. Why I haven't thought of that one before, I'll never know. I must be a Rock! Again, TY for pointing that out ..... not to mention the several ideas you shared about the use of spiral blades.
very nice tutorial video scroller man I really like it sorry I keep missing your videos UA-cam don’t notify me when you’re on i keep seeing them later instead of live aussiman
I thought I'd run you off somehow. Due to depression, I haven't been doing lives much, but hoping to get back to it. I also host scroll offs at the channel "Scroll Offs And More". I hope you'll consider subbing there buddy. Good to hear from you again ;)
I'm glad I started with spiral blades. All I use and actually don't like the straight ones because I'm terrible with them. Enjoy your videos and also your patterns.
Thanks for the good video with any stupid music! I have spiral blades that I bought a while ago and never used them. You made me want to get busy and try them out before they are actually needed. Thanks again!
I was wondering if you could help me? I recently purchased a scroll saw. I bought some reversed blades and I’m cutting out images on cedar boards, but I can’t keep them straight. There’s a lot a little cuts. I was wondering about using a spiral for that, I’m not really sure what to do or what type of blade to go with Let’s say something like a pumpkin cut out. I tried it with a reverse blade but I can’t get them to come out straight.
I have a question, Mr. Charles. I cant seam to find the answer in the plethera of scroll saw info. How do you choose the right size of spiral blade for your work? I realize its by how thik of the piece of wood your working with. I purchased a 5 dozen set of multi size spiral blades by the Flying Dutchman thinking there would be some insightful info on choosing a size but there wasnt. Can you give me a clue on what size i should be using? Thank you for your time. Im gaining alot from your instruction on these videos. Jill C. Tombstone Arizona
Thank you for this! I use spirals when needed and flat blades when i can. They are both great but in my opinion they have theyr own purposes. Straight lines are easyer and smoother with a flat blade. What is most important to me is a really slippery smooth surface of the scroll table.
Great video, Mr. Dearing. I’ve been woodcarving for less than a year and scroll sawing even fewer times (and only in regard to cutting out the wood patterns associated with my carving). I learned several valuable tips from your video. Thanks for posting it! I’m struggling with buying my first set of assorted scroll saw blades. The many various types of available blades is a bit overwhelming. Do you have any suggestions/guidance on choosing a good assortment of types of blades? And can you recommend a manufacturer of good quality blades?
I only use Flying Dutchman blades. #3 and #5 because I usually cut large pieces. In fact you can get a percentage off of them by getting them from WoodenTeddyBear.com. If you get a gross or more, put CHARLES in the notes portion of the transaction. If you get less than a gross, put CHARLES in the gift card/discount box ;) As far as which Flying Dutchman varieties to use, the folks over at the site can guide you much better. Great folks over there! Thanks for watching and for the kind words.
Hi Charles, thanks for the video. What type of spiral blade are you using and how much tension do you put on the blade when mounted. I use Olsen blades but I get wiggly lines when I cut. The blade has a hard time to follow a straight line compared to my one sided blades. I'm thinking that I'm not tensionning the blade properly?
Thanks for watching. It does sound like you need more tension on the blade. To be sure, I have a video elsewhere on my channel called "Anatomy Of A Scroll Saw" that mentions the sound you want to hear when it's properly tensioned. I use only Flying Dutchman spirals #3 and #5
Thank you for the tutorial and insight I have bought mine now and enjoy using them - early days. I did notice that when running them through my fingers, out the pack new, that they feel smooth in one direction and rough the other. There are no instructions on the pack that they should be inserted in any particular direction? I guess there is a choice though given how they feel. Which is the correct orientation smooth down or rough down, or doesnt it matter?
Boa noite amigo ,; consigo cortar bem com essa lâmina espiral mas o problema maior é o acabamento da corte notei que deixa muita rebarba no corte , é assim mesmo ?
By drilling a pilot hole. That's what is done with scroll sawing. You drill a pilot hole and thread the scroll saw blade through it. Clamp it and cut. ;)
Mr. Dearing I have a question I always use a flat blade on fretwork, could I use a spiral blade on a compound cut project I do not have any spiral blades and would like to try it if possible, thank you sir
Will it cut 3/4 inch piece or is it best to use thinner pieces with spiral blades? Are there different sizes? I just added a conversion kit so I could use spiral blades.
Hello Charles I watched a video that you did on the Hegner. I see that you are using the seyco which one do you like better they have a Hegnar on marketplace for a $1000 it is the multmax 22V Hegner Is that good or bad price. Honestly I love both saws. I have to say as far as clamping systems...the Hegner wins hands down. If the bellow is the only thing wrong with it, jump on it! Thank you so much for the kind words ;)

Thanks Charles, I've stayed away from spiral blades up until now. Your video has given me the basics. Now it's just about practice.
There ya go! They seem intimidating but some day you'll look back and wonder why you waited so long

I came into some Maple ply just under 1/4 inch, but most use 1/4 inch baltic birch

You thank good tips
You are good teacher
Thank you! 😃
You're the man, I don't like spiral blades because I'm the back there's too much tear out, could you possibly help me with that?
I'm afraid tear out is the down side of spirals. You get less using spirals with reverse teeth included.

Yes. Always have the teeth aiming down

What blade speed do you use? (good video)

Apologies for missing this comment. I always turn the speed all the way up because it only cuts as fast as I feed into the blade

I find spiral blades much easier to use on curvy parts.
Great comment. That blade will not cut you until the human element is introduced. I have been making this point to my students for years
I have been scrolling since 1982, am i the only scroller in the world that feeds the blade from the top? I find it faster for me anyway.
No sir you're not the only one lol. On a lot of saws I've topfed. On the Hegner I can't due to the upper arm not lifting
