This is a list of the many cat foods for hedgehogs.
Meal worms and crickets or super worms are given a couple times a week as more of a “treat” otherwise it adds far too much protein.
There’s also a list of vegetables and fruits that are acceptable. I have given my Hedgie apples and mangos, kibble sized amounts and they do fine. Peas and carrots work as well and it’s great cause you can use frozen bags and then just pull some out and again only give the insects and vegetables/fruits more sparingly. You want them mostly on a cat kibble diet. Google the nutritional information for the hedgehogs such as proteins, fibers, fats. If you just google the nutritional requirements, which insects are okay, which vegetables are okay, you’ll be good.
Also I recommended using more than one type of kibble, because sometimes brands discontinue their line of that one food your hedgie has been on for months. So you slowly rotate by adding half the kibble you were using with the new kibble, then you can completely switch or keep the same.
Currently I am using a mix of Complete Wellness Health Natural indoor dry food with chicken I believe, but they’ve been eating that and only that since they were babies a few months back. I recently decided to switch it up as I can’t find a decently small sized bag or a bag available anywhere and am running low which is why I recommended a switch. It’s higher in the proteins and fats and less in fiber. The more fiber you can get, the better. So I just bought 2 different types of Blue Buffalo, one is popular in a lot of UA-cam videos and it comes in a blue bag and is called Indoor Health, the other is a yellow and purple bag and that’s called Weight Control formula. I have been mixing a 50/50 ratio of the old Wellness Complete (or what I have remaining of it) with the Blue Buffalo Weight Control. All of these foods will be on the list I provided. Now we all know hedgies struggle with obesity and foods too high in proteins and fats are so hard on their kidneys, and according to many online information I found, the higher the fiber, the better. I suggest slowly integrating the new food into their diet rather than just suddenly swapping as it can cause diarrhea. But even if you do swap completely for a new food, that’s fine, you’ll just have a messier litter pan to clean for a few days to a week. My boys seem to like their Weight control food.
Now one of my hogs (the runt of his litter absolutely blew up, despite running on the wheel. So I cut back his food and give him less than my other hedgehog which is very active on the wheel and I feel needs more food, so I’ll give him a little more food than I feed the other one. Both are doing well. I was expecting more of a poop mess as I switch them over to this weight control, and I may bust open the bag of the blue Buffalo indoor cat adult food for my more athletic and inshape hog and save the weight control mainly for the fatter guy.
Which is important to have a scale and measure their weights, which will tell you when to cut back or add more food.
Here is the link of acceptable dry cat foods:
      www.volcanoviewhedgehogs.com/kibble-list.html
Also there are many other insects you can serve mainly as treats!!! Just 2-3 times a week in sparingly amounts. You can get the freeze dried. My boys started on dry meal worms and have winced moved onto crickets which they were kinda hesitant about. I put 2 meal worms and 2 crickets in the bowl so I can see the next day whether or not they are then or not and I’m not forgetting how many are in there.
You can also feed live insects and not just meal worms. Super worms, wax worms, Dubai roaches. But remember these are all really high in nutritional values so I would save them as treats and then, I’ll typically give some freeze dried mealworms or crickets to my more athletic hog, the plumper boy gets them fewer aww haha he loves them too. But what must be done must be done. We have not worked our way up to live insects yet and I haven’t given them too many veggies as a lot of the kibble already contains veggies and berries in it. But peas and carrots work well. I’ve been more experimental with the fruits but like I said, I’ve only tried apples and mangos, and these are given on nights when I’m doing a smaller amount of kibble for my big boy cause of the sugar content. Also, definitely take out any uneaten fruits or veggies, well in general completely empty out the bowls the next day to keep gnats away and also the fruit dries up so a hedgie could try to eat it, bite into it and have a hard time chewing it as mangos don’t dry hard, more of a jerky texture.
Just google safe fruits and vegetables for hedgehogs and you’ll find a list. Same with the insects. And like I said, these are not everyday meal foods. Just a couple a few times a week. They mainly just eat the cat food.
I guess Rachel Ray has some “cat treats” they’re kinda mushy but also have some crunch in them. I saw another hedgie UA-camr giving a couple to his hedgie, who chewed and then anointed himself with it soo idk about those haha
Just buy a kitchen scale and progress their weight fluctuations, stick to the link I provided.
And google is a powerful resource with tons of info about a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and insects to feed your hedgehog.
You don’t just need to rely on a UA-camr who has a hedgehog for this info. Yes they have good info for beginners. But I have a completely different setup for my hedgies as I decided to go with a custom made wooden hutch and researching safe products to seal it to prevent mites and bacterial infections. Off topic but I would recommend water based aquarium sealant and water based silicone as caulking for the corners and sides. I really love how my hutches turned out with glass doors, custom made fleece bedding and hide-outs. It’s also 2 stories. The cages Tori uses aren’t allowing access to the upper level which she instead uses to put a heat lamp on. Hedgehogs love to climb. Just put them in a low rim box or a sink with some water. Watch them climb. Of course I also have a custom made and secure ramp for them to get up and down safely and it utilizes every part of the hutch. I’m quite proud of how they turned out. Plus they match my furniture. Very cute!!
Hope the list helps you out although I know this is an old comment. This channel is not the only hedgie channel around, and reading online is a great source of info for any needs or concerns.

I’ve always used meat pads with my hedgehogs, and have done for many many years. As long as used with a regulated thermostat control there has never been a problem in all the years I have kept them. Any problems with heat mats/pads is usually always due to improper use.

    Hi Tori!💕
I have a vivarium for my hedgehog, so the only heat source I can get/afford is a heatpad. She has had it for a year now, and is doing great. She’s always active and friendly and has never gone into hibernation. I think the mistakes owners make with heat pads are that they set the temperatures too high.

If possible, I see a lot of people giving chinchilla dust/sand to their hedgehogs claiming that this is “a natural way for them to clean themselves”. I’ve found very conflicting information on forums and groups in regards to this. A video on what your opinion/experience is on this matter would be awesome.
Also, a video on burrow boxes would be helpful as well.

I'm asking for you're advice as to where is best place to put your heat emmiter over the cage. I'm going to be using a bin cage as my home can get cold of a night, sometimes it goes -3 degrees below freezing 🥶. Ive noticed that yours are over the sleeping area, so would that apply to a bin cage as well? I love your channel its so informative.

What do you think of those snuggle sacks? The ones that heat in the microwave and then are covered with fleece? Would those also be an alternative option?

Hi im thinking of getting a hedgehog in my room. Im binge watching your hedgehog vids and writing notes about heating, food and cage ect. I go to school at 9 and go home at half 3. Im worried that i wont be there enough for the hedgehog. Im also at my dads sat-tues. I was thinking having a cage for the hedgehog at my dads and one at my mums. Will the hedgehog be able to cope with the short car drive and a change of room? Hedgehogs are adorable and have been my dream pet for ages.

I am bringing home my first hedgie in a few weeks. Can I get the link to what you use, I couldn’t find it. Also I have a glass 50 gal tank and my hedgehogs enclosure. What do you recommend as a hearing source for that? A friend with a hedgehog recommended the 50 gal fish tank instead of a wire.

Hi Tori! I have a question. Can I use 100 watts heat lamp on two hedgehogs who are in their separate cages? I have a girl in a rabbit cage that has wheels on them. I have a boy on a guinea big cage not too big but enough to walk around. I was thinking of adding the 100 watts one in the middle of both of their cage but I'm not sure what do you think? Please and thank you.

I don’t have any experience with hedgehogs getting fleas, it’s actually more likely for them to get mites, which requires a vet visit.

  • @squidwardiscool7915

I had an important question that came up recently. I got my hedgehog when it was warmer but now it's super cold because I'm in Michigan and all the snow is coming down at once (honestly annoying). She's been less active during these cold weeks and i didn't know if that was normal? Her cage temperature is still 74 and she still runs, just only for an hour every night rather than the longer hours when I first got her in the summer

I have a question about heating. So when I get my hedgehog the only room I could have it in is my room. But will I have to give up living with an AC if I have a hedgehog? Or will the heat lamp be enough to keep a bin cage warm and the rest of my room can be cool? I really need to know before I get one.

Is it ok to travel with a hedgehog (about an hour, no longer!)? I have a traveling case that’s very soft and an appropriate size, I put some fleece blanket pieces in the carrier, and I put the travel carrier in a cardboard box with another blanket, and then I buckle the box in the seat. Is this ok? Should I also include a hand warmer somewhere? I’m so worried about him in the car, but I don’t want to leave him alone for an entire weekend!
