    A friend is neglecting a hedgehog, so I'm picking the hedgehog up within a few weeks because if I dont he'll set it free in the wild to die, so I'm trying to cram in all the research all i can on them.

    I'm glad I did pretty extensive research before going to my local pet store. They thought I was crazy for not using a tank, but my cage is much easier to clean and much bigger than what I could have had as a tank.

    My little albino hedgehog was 3 months old but he passed away yesterday from constipation. 2 days before we took him to the vet and all they did was give us antibiotics. He was my first pet ever, and he was so young. I'm just glad I check on him before he passed and saw he was going. I help him in my arms as he passed, so I'm glad I was there for him.

    Took my hedgehog to the vet today and she had worms and they said it was really common!! Where I live I paid $100 for her meds and her cost for the check up

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  6 років тому +23

      It's actually fairly unusual for pet hedgehogs to get worms - I'm glad to hear you got it taken care of quickly though!

    • @lexrose3768
      @lexrose3768 6 років тому +19

      PugPibbleHedgie, Actually it's not very unusual I work at an exotic vet and hedgehogs with worms are one of the most common things we see in hedgehogs. 😊

    • @stephaniemoreno4145
      @stephaniemoreno4145 6 років тому +5

      Lexy Rose why is it so common? is there a reason behind it happening?

    • @lexrose3768
      @lexrose3768 6 років тому +11

      Stephanie Moreno, All wild hedgehogs carry worms, Healthy hedgehogs 'develop' a resistance (or immunity) to these worms, which means that the hedgehog itself prevents the worm numbers building up to the point at which they become a problem to the hedgehog (so that normally the hedgehog and its parasites will live in harmony.)
      However, if a hedgehogs immunity is reduced (by, for example, a bad injury, disease, starvation or even the stress of hospitalisation) the worms can then multiply unchecked; this will then result in them getting to such high numbers inside the hedgehog that they DO now cause a problem. And basically common sense is that all Hedgehogs are pulled from the wild, no matter if they were bred because generations before them were pulled from the wild. Hope this clears some things up. :)

    • @stephaniemoreno4145
      @stephaniemoreno4145 6 років тому +3

      Lexy Rose hey, yeah for sure. Thanks for the response, I have never heard anyone mention that it is “common” I can see how an added stress could induce an influx, though.

    I’m 25 and got my baby girl Ritalin today.. yes I named her the adhd drug because she’s nuts and runs around like an ADHD child. I love her so much she’s a Cinnamon Hedgie. She’s the sweetest and bonded to me immediately. Today we’ve gone to target and Starbucks and a few other places. She loves kids and dogs and other people. When I was 18 I adopted a hedgehog from a pet shop in Clear lake Texas and the hedgie was only maybe a month old. No belly hair and was smaller than my fingers. It didn’t make it. It took me 7 years to emotionally get over it. I got my baby from a hedgehog rescue and I’m so grateful. Love your videos so informative 🤍

    I figured this tip out from a friend! If you already have a wire cage, and you’re having issues with heating or you hedgehogs climbing this could be an option for you! My friend cut pieces of fleece to match the sizes of the walls. She used 2 layers to make it thicker, and attached the fleece to inside of the back wall and the 2 side walls. Then she did the same for the front wall, but only did it halfway up so that it would still have some ventilation. It helped insult her cage, and I’m assuming it would prevent climbing as well! It might be cheaper than buying a whole new cage if you already have a wire one!

    I will say to anyone considering a hedgehog...HEATING IS ESSENTIAL. My hedgehogs cage was heated but the bulb went out when I was at school and by the time I got home he was hibernating. After lots of time on a heating pad and fork feeding him a scrambled egg, he did come back. Be careful because not everyone is so lucky!!!!!

    Hey! I live in England near London we get very hot summers but quite cold winters, I am thinking of getting a Pygmy hedgehog and have never owned them before, So I was wondering if I could use a microwaveable heat pad for them? 💕 The one I use for my guinea pigs is covered in fleece? Also our average room temperature is 25 degrees so is this ok?

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  6 років тому +1

      The heat pads are okay but not as actual heating, just as emergency heating. For actual heating you'll want either a space heater or a ceramic heat lamp. (:

    I know this is a late comment, but I thought it might be helpful. Recently I learned that Aspen bedding is not a good option for hedgies, at least where I live. Normally would use aspen bedding, but apparently most are inhabited by mites. Mites are little bugs that make your hedgehog itch, cause irritation and dry skin, and in my case, make their quills fall out. My vet said that about 95% or aspen bedding is inhabited by mites just for people's information.

    My Hedgehogs live in my large bathroom.
    The tile is easy to clean and they sleep in towels that I change every other day or everyday if I have to.
    I keep my home at 75 degrees… so far they are 4 years old.
    I rather clean my tiles every single morning than to clean a cage.
    If you don’t like cleaning they are not a pet for you… personally I love to clean my white bathroom spotless so cleaning the room every morning is not difficult for me.

    Hi! I noticed on one of your videos that you have a white thing (cardboard maybe?) inside around your hedgehogs cage. Could you tell me why you have that? Just curious if I need it for my hedgehog as well. Love your videos by the way. Very informative and useful information!

    Yes yes yes the heating is extremely important I had a hedge hog who he got to be 4 years old and I live in South Dakota which it gets quite cold here so I would keep a heater on his cage well one year in April a huge ice storm hit like half the state and we were out of power for 3 weeks and no travel any where for the first 4 days in my small now we had red cross but nothing for my little spiky buddy poor guy got very sick and didn't make it

    I am getting my hedgehog the day after tomorrow. I live in a warm climate so we turn the heat up in our 2 months of semi winter to 23 celcius and in the summer keep it at 25 because it get's real hot here. I bought the ceramic heat transmitter anyway, just in case the temperature in the 2 months of winter isn't correct in the cage. Thanks for all the amazing advice. I ordered a cute set of fleece liner, tunnel and snuggle sack. I can't wait for my girl to arrive 😍 I am used to bonding with small animals, but part of my bonding is not picking them up but let them come up my hand themselves. Do you recommend picking the hedgehog up anyway if she doesn't come up herself? Because i understand the contact is vital in socializing them? Xoxox

    I know it wasn’t on this video but you suggested using Humilac spray to moisturize our hedgehogs but they don’t sell it anymore. What do you use/suggest now? Also if it’s not a spray how do you apply it? Could you make an updated video? Thanks so much!!

    I’m planning on getting a hedgehog soon and I will be using a bin cage and fleece how should I go about getting the fleece to stay at the bottom and not bundle up or come undone?

    I was wanting to get a Midwest and sort of take out all ramps and make two floors and put in bins for bedding etc for two desperate hedgies, but here in winter it gets super cold and I always have a fan in my room since I over heat a lot lol. Would there be a way for me to work around the cold and wire cages? Or I guess my question is: will a c & c cage work better? I’ll probably end up ordering a c and c cage. I’ve heard of putting heat lamps then heat pads under he bedding / tunnels/ fleece. And putting hits etc. would this work in a cold room?

    Hi! I just adopted a 2 year old male hedgie. He’s a grumpy feisty boy. I’m learning from your videos. Is a nice fleece cage bedding better than wood shavings?

    Hi! I just got my first hedgehog (she’s quite small, approx 5 weeks). I’ve been watching a lot of your videos but a question I have is; the room I keep her in stays around 25-26 degrees so I don’t think I need to provide her with a heat source. Am I correct?
    Ps, love your videos

    I am thinking about getting a hedgehog and I was wondering what your thoughts on wheel covers are. I keep seeing them everywhere and they look like a real lifesaver when it comes to cleaning the wheel but I'm not quite sure if they are a good choice or not.

    Hi Tori. Doing some research on my (hopefully) future Hoggo.
    I'm aware hedgies need to be kept at strict temperatures in their habitats. However, while I recognise certain temperatures could force them to attempt hibernation, I was wondering how long it would take between being out of their habitat and in lower temperatures for that to happen. For instance, were I to take my Hedgie out of his 23C home and play with him for, say, 3 hours in a 14C room, or letting him run around for a few hours, would he be okay with this? How many hours can he be comfortably away from his house safely?

    I recently met a hedgehog breeder who gives her hedgehogs (unseasoned) scrambled eggs (without milk) and uses bigger plastic bins to house them. What are your thoughts on this?
