A friend is neglecting a hedgehog, so I'm picking the hedgehog up within a few weeks because if I dont he'll set it free in the wild to die, so I'm trying to cram in all the research all i can on them.
I'm glad I did pretty extensive research before going to my local pet store. They thought I was crazy for not using a tank, but my cage is much easier to clean and much bigger than what I could have had as a tank.
My little albino hedgehog was 3 months old but he passed away yesterday from constipation. 2 days before we took him to the vet and all they did was give us antibiotics. He was my first pet ever, and he was so young. I'm just glad I check on him before he passed and saw he was going. I help him in my arms as he passed, so I'm glad I was there for him.
I have wanted a hedgehog for about a year now. I have been watching your videos to find out more about them and how to care for them and now I know like everything I need about them. Thanks!
Megan Ruther i have a hedgehog i loooked everything up about them talked to hedgehog owners i got stuff for her started a petition befor i even saked my parents then they said could get her :)
Took my hedgehog to the vet today and she had worms and they said it was really common!! Where I live I paid $100 for her meds and her cost for the check up
PugPibbleHedgie, Actually it's not very unusual I work at an exotic vet and hedgehogs with worms are one of the most common things we see in hedgehogs. 😊
Stephanie Moreno, All wild hedgehogs carry worms, Healthy hedgehogs 'develop' a resistance (or immunity) to these worms, which means that the hedgehog itself prevents the worm numbers building up to the point at which they become a problem to the hedgehog (so that normally the hedgehog and its parasites will live in harmony.) However, if a hedgehogs immunity is reduced (by, for example, a bad injury, disease, starvation or even the stress of hospitalisation) the worms can then multiply unchecked; this will then result in them getting to such high numbers inside the hedgehog that they DO now cause a problem. And basically common sense is that all Hedgehogs are pulled from the wild, no matter if they were bred because generations before them were pulled from the wild. Hope this clears some things up. :)
Lexy Rose hey, yeah for sure. Thanks for the response, I have never heard anyone mention that it is “common” I can see how an added stress could induce an influx, though.

I’ve dreamed of owning a hedgehog for over a decade now and I’ve finally got myself into a position to make that happen! Now I’m doing a bunch of research before I get one and these videos have been extremely helpful thank you so much!
I figured this tip out from a friend! If you already have a wire cage, and you’re having issues with heating or you hedgehogs climbing this could be an option for you! My friend cut pieces of fleece to match the sizes of the walls. She used 2 layers to make it thicker, and attached the fleece to inside of the back wall and the 2 side walls. Then she did the same for the front wall, but only did it halfway up so that it would still have some ventilation. It helped insult her cage, and I’m assuming it would prevent climbing as well! It might be cheaper than buying a whole new cage if you already have a wire one!
This was so helpful I was thinking about getting a hedgehog but after watching these I realized a hamster which was my second option would be MUCH better for me
My hedgie Cornelius LOVES running, he could run for around 6 hours a night and after buying a comfort wheel, I regret it so much because of the noise. I will probably be buying the one you suggested soon because he wakes me up constantly
Doing some research on hedgehogs and I’m trying to figure out how to persuade my parents :/ I’ve had 3 guinea pigs before. And there’s a nice breeder in my area. :))
I'm doing research before we make the decision to purchase/adopt a hedgehog as a pet. Could you describe how to set up a bin cage with the heat lamp? I'm worried about something melting.
O My Glob as long as you have a thermostat connected, nothing will be melting ;) honestly get a thermostat anyways. Best advice I got from this channel! The bulbs get way hot. Keeps your hedgie at a perfect temp. 👍 goodluck!
im really set on wanting a hedgehog, I live in Nevada. so its always pretty toasty, Ive owned rodents my whole life but my most recent hamster passed last year and we still have all her stuff that she didnt get to use as she passed just as we got it. we got a HUMONGOUS bin for her that is moveable. im so glad we didnt use it so if I do get a hedgehog they dont smell her. im so in love with hedgehogs rn. thank you for all the tips!
I recently went with my mother to check out a new school, and while the principal gave us a tour, she showed us a room with lots of reptiles and class pets, but they had a hedgehog there because the children wouldn’t take care of it… I offered to take him and I’m researching about them to make sure I have all I need because otherwise the poor thing may be put in a shelter ❤
Since I live in Louisiana, it gets really hot (it was like 106 degrees the other day) but when winter comes it can go to negative temperatures were I live, and winter/fall is hunting season so we always have the hand warmers around the house (we have like a bucket full)
Recently got my new hedgehog and his names ozzy he's getting warmed up to me but I still use gloves bc he's still rlly prickely but other ways great video and yeah bye💖❤️
Thank you for posting all these helpful videos.😁 I’ve watched all the ones on hedgehogs before getting a hedgehog 🦔 Your videos are sooooo helpful😁😁😁😁😁 (btw I love your hair❤️)
Yes yes yes the heating is extremely important I had a hedge hog who he got to be 4 years old and I live in South Dakota which it gets quite cold here so I would keep a heater on his cage well one year in April a huge ice storm hit like half the state and we were out of power for 3 weeks and no travel any where for the first 4 days in my small now we had red cross but nothing for my little spiky buddy poor guy got very sick and didn't make it
I will say to anyone considering a hedgehog...HEATING IS ESSENTIAL. My hedgehogs cage was heated but the bulb went out when I was at school and by the time I got home he was hibernating. After lots of time on a heating pad and fork feeding him a scrambled egg, he did come back. Be careful because not everyone is so lucky!!!!!
Yayyyy! I got a cage for my future first hedgehog 🦔 and it’s 8 square feet and over 1,100 square inches. It’s a barred cage but I think I will be fine because I’m comfortable with heating cuz I own a bearded dragon and I will have a space heater. I will have a pet room with all my pets so it will get nice and warm. I might consider getting a heating pad but my friend almost caught her whole room on fire from one sooo I don’t know lol. Thanks for this it was very helpful ❤️🙂
I'd definitely avoid a heating pad, like your friend has experienced, they're a bit of a pain and tend to overheat. There are lots of hedgehogs with really awful burns from them.
PugPibbleHedgie (this account is run by 2 people ) I was the one who had my room catch on fire from a heating pad. There horrible it always left my hedgie with burns on his feet but my vet just said they'll go away so I thought nothing of it. My hedgies cage is In my room so one night when I was sleeping my mom saw smoke all from my room and my hedgies cage was on fire (he's ok he just turned 2 yrs old) and my dad got a rlly bad burn on his foot. I would never recommend a heat pad to anyone. Maybe if you can find a better brand than zoo med but other than that there a hazard for hedgies
Do you recommend a c+c cage for a starter? I plan on basically covering the entire walls with coroplast. Also, I usually keep my house at 74, but my pet room tends to be a bit colder. Sorry for all the questions, but I'm nervous for my first pet lol (btw I already did a TON of research).
C&C cages can be great cages as long as the coroplast is high :) Definitely invest in a heat setup, C&C cages don't hold heat well enough to go without one.
Tori Lynn I live in Florida, we literally never drop below 55 Fahrenheit but our house stays 70+. It’s also in my pet room so my bearded dragon and geckos heat up the room a bit so I’m wondering if I really need heating? I’ll provide it if need be but rlly?
I know this is a late comment, but I thought it might be helpful. Recently I learned that Aspen bedding is not a good option for hedgies, at least where I live. Normally would use aspen bedding, but apparently most are inhabited by mites. Mites are little bugs that make your hedgehog itch, cause irritation and dry skin, and in my case, make their quills fall out. My vet said that about 95% or aspen bedding is inhabited by mites just for people's information.
valeria bocheva as far as I know, a hedgehog needs a constant air temperature of 73-80 (Fahrenheit) degrees. You should always have a thermometer to measure the temperature even if you’re mostly sure of the temperature.
I’m planning on getting a hedgehog soon and I will be using a bin cage and fleece how should I go about getting the fleece to stay at the bottom and not bundle up or come undone?
Hi Tori. Doing some research on my (hopefully) future Hoggo. I'm aware hedgies need to be kept at strict temperatures in their habitats. However, while I recognise certain temperatures could force them to attempt hibernation, I was wondering how long it would take between being out of their habitat and in lower temperatures for that to happen. For instance, were I to take my Hedgie out of his 23C home and play with him for, say, 3 hours in a 14C room, or letting him run around for a few hours, would he be okay with this? How many hours can he be comfortably away from his house safely?
I recently met a hedgehog breeder who gives her hedgehogs (unseasoned) scrambled eggs (without milk) and uses bigger plastic bins to house them. What are your thoughts on this?
"First time owners probably won't be comfortable with heating, unless you have a reptile, than your probably fine with it" Me, staring at my gecko's very elaborate heating setup: Tru dat
Hi! I just adopted a 2 year old male hedgie. He’s a grumpy feisty boy. I’m learning from your videos. Is a nice fleece cage bedding better than wood shavings?
I want a hedgehog but I can’t find a place to buy one and also I am scared that my pit bull and my yellow lab are going to attack it and my nearest exotic pet veterinarian is at least 45-60 minutes away. I don’t know the right choice bc I really want one and I am financially ready but I’m just not sure
I’ have a pit too and I searched it up and it said most dogs know that hedgehogs have quills and can hurt them but don’t let them play together bc the dog can end up hurt and so can ur hedgehog 😃,and I would suggest waiting if ur not financially stable bc it would be better to be stable and good then not and have two dogs and a hedgehog 😀 just my opinion though, hope u find my information helping and also I would recommend when u go to the place wherever ur getting ur hedgehog from ask them on how to introduce ur dogs to the hedgehog, or u could do what I’m thinking about doing which is having my dogs meet my hedgehog one by one so my hedgehog isn’t bombarded by dogs, just my advice though and she also said that she doesn’t really introduce her hedgehogs to her dogs so I would suggest just keeping the hedgehog away from the dogs as much as u can hope that helps 😃
This might sound dumb but i really need to know because our power goes out a lot in Texas, but how would you use the hand warmers for the hedgehogs?Because I really would like to know for safety purposes for my hedgehog.Thankyou💕!
Ava Riley wrap it in something like a cloth or a hand warmer holder and then u can use it next to her. Just don’t put it directly next to her without anything on it xx
I know it wasn’t on this video but you suggested using Humilac spray to moisturize our hedgehogs but they don’t sell it anymore. What do you use/suggest now? Also if it’s not a spray how do you apply it? Could you make an updated video? Thanks so much!!
Hi! I noticed on one of your videos that you have a white thing (cardboard maybe?) inside around your hedgehogs cage. Could you tell me why you have that? Just curious if I need it for my hedgehog as well. Love your videos by the way. Very informative and useful information!

The cat jumping down scared the crap out of me😂😂😂😂
Admittedly, I am so proud of myself for not visibly jumping because it scared me too hahaha.
I'm glad I did pretty extensive research before going to my local pet store. They thought I was crazy for not using a tank, but my cage is much easier to clean and much bigger than what I could have had as a tank.

c&c are great for starters, that's what i used. and since your pet room is colder, it would be smart to get a heat set up for your hedgehog
Thanks for the help!
Hi, I live in Thailand and think I am getting a hedghog but do I need heating bc its pretty hot?
valeria bocheva as far as I know, a hedgehog needs a constant air temperature of 73-80 (Fahrenheit) degrees. You should always have a thermometer to measure the temperature even if you’re mostly sure of the temperature.
Allie Woog thank you
I’m planning on getting a hedgehog soon and I will be using a bin cage and fleece how should I go about getting the fleece to stay at the bottom and not bundle up or come undone?
This was amazing I learned so much thank you 😊
1) could i use a vivarium
2) to us reptile keepers 27°c is nothing😂
Yes you can use a vivarium :)
Lol the poop on the wheels is so relatable😂
OMG I always wanted a hedgehog
Where do you get fleece? Also I love your videos!
I love her!😂 She is so funny! 🤣
I really don’t have the space for 4 square ft i just thought it had to be kind of big but that’s HUGE
I recently met a hedgehog breeder who gives her hedgehogs (unseasoned) scrambled eggs (without milk) and uses bigger plastic bins to house them. What are your thoughts on this?
Thank you for the info, and btw you have really pretty eyes:)
"First time owners probably won't be comfortable with heating, unless you have a reptile, than your probably fine with it"
Me, staring at my gecko's very elaborate heating setup: Tru dat
Hi! I just adopted a 2 year old male hedgie. He’s a grumpy feisty boy. I’m learning from your videos. Is a nice fleece cage bedding better than wood shavings?
Our cage is 9 square feet, and our hedgehogs use all of it! They love to run around
Ava Riley check out her heating videos
Ava Riley wrap it in something like a cloth or a hand warmer holder and then u can use it next to her. Just don’t put it directly next to her without anything on it xx
2:10 HAHAH the thing walking on the back
I know it wasn’t on this video but you suggested using Humilac spray to moisturize our hedgehogs but they don’t sell it anymore.
I am in Arizona and use a vivarium I did put in extra vents though
Haha when you were talking you cat jumped off of somewhere and it zoomed by your shoulder
I can wiggle my ears!!
