    I just found you because I was looking for hedgehog videos....Earlier today my neighbor said he was going to throw his hedgehog outside cause he was tired of taking care of it 😭💔 I told him to please give her to me...and he gave her to me💜 I knew absolutely nothing about them lol!!! Now I’m doing nothing but research to learn about my new family addition. I love your cage idea!!! Right now she is in a big bin with water, food and bedding. I read that they dig in the wild for bugs so I’m going to make her a garden area with new bugs every night. She’s two and has lived in a very tiny cage with no wheel and no insects for her whole life 😭😭😭😭 They didn’t even give her a name, I named her Thumbtack 😆 I have 6 sugar gliders so I’m definitely used to taking care of exotics💜 She has never been handled so I have my work cut out for me. Anyways your video was amazing and you got a new sub!!! Also off topic but you are BEAUTIFUL!!! MUCH LOVE TO YOU FRIEND!!! Thank you for loving animals!!!

      Omg..your neighbor is a total JACKASS!! This made me so upset. So, its r months later..how is Thumbtack (cute name lol) doing? Im sure he is doing good, i meant how is his behavior? My hedgie was never handled either, a lady was so ridding of him so I took him and every day i handle him but he is still aggressive. It's frustrating when people dont take care of their animals!

    At first I was a little hesitant on the idea of this setup especially because African Pygmy hedgehogs are more “domesticated” than other hedgehog species. But I have to say it worked out really well! I love how you still included a wheel so he can get his exercise!

    A friend of mine just bought a hedgehog and I asked her if she ever heard of a bioactive set up for them. She said yah and that she really wanted to set one up for her hedgehog baby, so I sent her both of your bioactive set up videos so she was provided with all the isopod, plant, substrate layer, etc info in greater detail than was I was able to provide! Thanks Tyler!!!!

      They can't climb up the plastic sides of the cage! Also if somehow springtails or Isopods got out, they wouldn't survive outside of the enclosure! (:

    I have my hedgehog in a large plastic tub. There's a snake heating pad under it. I use clay buster in my tub for the main substrate. I have a corner ceramic water dish. I also have a bowl with dry catfood. There's an igloo in there with a few toys. I never thought about putting plants in there. That looks so cool. I also feed him giant mealworms. 🦔🐾

    • @sjsosokdksksk
      @sjsosokdksksk 6 років тому +8

      They have no reason to try to escape because soil feels safe to them. And anyways plastic would be hard to climb up. And they wouldn't survive out of a cage :)

    • @abby1051
      @abby1051 6 років тому +2

      I don't think they can climb up the sides! Besides, I don't know if they'd want to since they'd have the soil which is their nutrients. Maybe the dubia roaches could, although I seriously doubt they would, but if you were worried you could just not put them in! :)

    • @Kali-wn1lx
      @Kali-wn1lx 6 років тому

      You could put up a level of plexy glass (glued to the bars on the inside so the hedgehog doesnt eat the glue and making sure it isn't pointy for him to get hurt) as another way of making sure that there are no escapees

    I have a couple of questions, are the plants in the enclosure non toxic to them? And do those bugs end up in your house or stay in there?
    My only suggestion is plants need good drainage. In the future I’d probably say drill some holes in the bottom of the cage and put it over a tray so the plant roots don’t rot. But I LOVE this idea.

    The hedgehogs overseas look so different to the ones we have in the wild here. They are brown, spiker, and have more shrew like faces.
    I searched for this because the other day I found a young hedgehog (probably between 4 to 7 weeks old). He is pretty smelly but doesn't have mange. My Mum has rescued hedgehogs before, but fully grown and only while treating them for parasites, before releasing them.
    Because this little guy is a lot younger we need to keep him for longer so he/she needs a bigger set up. We have a indoor rabbit enclosure or dog cage with a tray bottom and metal removable top. So it's big enough but I don't know where to start. He's in a cat cage at the moment. He pees and poops ALOT so I'm not sure what substrate to use. If I should go for wood chips or the softer shavings for mice and rats?
