    I ordered the thru hole parts from your link above . When assembled the board wouldn't fit into my R2 droid. with the flash chip inserted into the socket. It was too wide for the board opening and wouldn't seat properly in the slot. The board kept popping out. Of course I soldered all three sockets onto all three boards and wasn't able to successfully desolder the socket to test if the thru hole chip soldered directly to the board fit. Fortunately I also ordered surface mount flash chip and was able to clip off the socket legs off and smooth out their solder pads to the point I was able to solder on the surface mount chip. My R2 now sounds like C3PO! Darth Vader is next! Thanks for sharing all your hard work. I had a lot of fun with this project! I will definitely be ordering the programming adapter board you mentioned in the part 3 video when it is ready.

    • @Ruthsarian
      @Ruthsarian  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah. I screwed up not testing with an R-unit before putting the PCB design out there. I think the fix to keep the socketed through-hole personality chip an option is to extend the contact fingers by a few millimeters. My very first design had longer fingers and it will fit inside an R-unit (as long as you don't also have one of the chip clips from spudinator on thingiverse).
      I've also designed an adapter that will let you plug a personality chip into a programmer without having to deal with removing the chip, meaning there'd be no need for a socket. So anyone with the current design could still use their through-hole memory chips. I need to finish the video on that adapter and put it out, then I'll probably do a redesign on the personality chip to extend the fingers so the socketed through-hole version will fit in R-units.

      @@Ruthsarian The surface mount flash chips are really not that hard to solder. The resistor and capacitors are the real pain. I'm glad I got extras of those because a few dropped on the floor and I lost them! Given the cost this is a great project to practice your surface mount soldering technique. Thanks again for all your hard work. I am looking forward to the adapter being released. when it is, I'll be ordering it and more boards.

    Is there a trick to getting the blaster to light up? I redid my chip's audio for the blaster to me well over .5, but the light isn't registering.

    • @Ruthsarian
      @Ruthsarian  4 роки тому +1

      I don't have an R-unit droid to test with, so I'm not sure what trick there might be. I know that volume of the audio clip is critical to making the LEDs in the head light up. I would assume it's the same for the blaster accessory, but I can't say for certain. You could try amplifying the audio of your blaster noise to some ridiculous level, just to prove whether or not volume plays a role in turning the blaster LEDs on.
      i'll ask on the galaxy's edge discord server and see if anyone else has any experience with this.

    • @Ruthsarian
      @Ruthsarian  4 роки тому +2

      I think I just about have the LED problem with the accessories figured out. Blaster and thruster sounds include extra event data that tell the LEDs to turn on and off. the other droid noises do not. i've got someone with an R-unit I'm working with to test this out. I'll share the information once it's confirmed working, but that may be a few days.

    You can also reflash the original chips, no problem! But if you're using the CH341A programmer to reflash the original Galaxys Edge chips, you MUST modify it to 3.3V data lines (the CH341A programmers on Amazon have 3.3V to the chip power, but 5V data lines). Just google "CH341A 3.3v mod", it's just 5 minutes with a soldering iron but without it, the original chip will become unstable and corrupt any reads/writes to it.

      check out this playlist:
      ua-cam.com/play/PL1LWtA1iy9hv2R1a-inW9WY91VEcFrai0.html
      that playlist goes through the whole process from tearing down a stock personality chip to figure out how it works to creating a custom personality chip PCB, assembling it, and programming it.
      The memory chip is an SPI Flash memory chip. There are a lot of devices out there that can be used to program them, just search for "spi flash programmer' or similar and you'll find lots of devices including the CH341A. I usually use a TL866II Plus, however it's an expensive device (because it can program many more things beyond memory chips). For these videos I wanted to find the cheapest solution possible so anyone who wants to make their own personality chip can do so without having to spend a lot of money. I searched the internet and found the CH341A would be the cheapest device that can program SPI Flash memory chips. I bought one. Confirmed it worked. And started making these videos.
      I figured out what software to use based on text written on the control board inside R-unit droids which identifies the exact chip that is used to play sounds on personality chips. I searched the internet for that chip, found the company that makes it, and their website offers the tools to make the ROM to program the personality chip free for download.
      The PCB design was based on looking at the design of a stock personality chip to get the dimensions (width, the size of the gold fingers, and how those fingers connect to the memory chip). Based on that information I was able to design my own PCB.
      As for the memory chip, there are hundreds of different SPI flash memory chips to choose from, anyone of which would work because SPI is a standard protocol used to communicate with memory chips (among other things). So I picked one that I found that was inexpensive and available for purchase and used it for the design.

    This is a great video. I just got my droid and wanted to mod it this is a perfect mod. I went to your mouser link for through hole version for parts and it looks like the socket is sold out and the chip has been discontinued. Is there a similar socket and chip I could use instead?

    • @Ruthsarian
      @Ruthsarian  2 роки тому +1

      for a socket you can use this: www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/571-1-2199298-2
      for the chip, there's not much available. through-hole memory chips appear to be going away. the only thing mouser has is this: www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/804-25VF080B5CPAE unfortunately that chip only has 1MB of memory space. that's the same size stock personality chips use, so you can still make a decent personality with it, but you can't do lots of long clips with it.
      You could take a chance on eBay. Here are a couple of listings for 5 chips for $5 w/free shipping:
      www.ebay.com/itm/292367973180
      www.ebay.com/itm/392587584928
      They may be fake chips. They may be defects. They may not be 8MB chips, but some other, smaller value. They could be exactly what they say they are. It's a risk. Beyond that, there's not much available in the world of through-hole flash memory chips. Not sure if this is a product of the global chip supply shortage or just a sign that the industry is moving on from through-hole flash memory chips.

    1 $0.10
    10 $0.83
    100 $3.20
    1000 $13.99

    1 $0.10
    10 $0.31
    100 $1.37

      @Ruthsarian  4 роки тому +1

      Just an FYI for anyone else who comes across this, I talked to Brian via e-mail. The personality chip was working with the droid, but running hot. The personality chip components (memory chip, capacitors, resistors) were installed in the right place and right orientation. He resoldered a few joints that perhaps weren't making good connections, and that appears to have resolved the issue.
      The ground pin of the memory chip will take a little while longer to heat up before solder flows than the other pins. That's normal. Keep the iron on the pin a few seconds longer than the other pins and the solder will eventually flow.
      A hot memory chip (on a personality chip that does not work AT ALL; Brian's was working) is usually a sign that the chip has been installed backwards. I've done that myself a couple of times. I haven't fried a chip doing that, yet, but it's definitely possible to destroy a memory chip if it's installed backwards.

    Can’t you just reprogram a real droid personality chip from Galaxy’s Edge or are they locked?

    • @Ruthsarian
      @Ruthsarian  3 роки тому +1

      The feature to lock them exists, but in all the personality chips I've seen it has not been fully implemented, leaving them open to being reprogrammed. That may have already changed or may change in the future.

      digikey.com is another place you could by them online. Search for the part number in the Mouser list as it'll be the same for DigiKey. For example, here's the same SOIC-8 memory chip: www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/winbond-electronics/W25Q16JVSNIQ/W25Q16JVSNIQ-ND/6193768
      You could also try searching for the part number on eBay. These look like the right chip: www.ebay.com/itm/264257983744

    Is it possible to do the same thing to the kyber crystals to add different voices to the holocrons.

    • @Ruthsarian
      @Ruthsarian  4 роки тому

      Unfortunately, no. The voices are stored on a memory chip inside the holocron. To change the any voices in the holocron would require writing new sound files to that memory chip. The audio format used to encode those sound files is proprietary and we don't yet know how to encode sound files so that the holocron will understand them.

    If you are savvy enough to be creating these and don’t own a dermal with a grinder tip. You are an oxymoron. It’s like saying you like to take things apart and repair things but you don’t own a single screwdriver
