I am an electronics hobbyist. I occasionally share videos of things I am working on.
Part 5 - Usage : Ruthsarian Blade Controller
The fifth (and probably final) in a multi-part series on assembling, programming, and installing a custom blade controller for lightsaber blades from Galaxy's Edge. This video covers how to use the installed blade controller and its various features.
The GitHub repository details about this project along with the controller firmware can be found here:
github.com/ruthsarian/RuthsarianBladeController
The playlist for this video series can be found here:

I wish the videos in this series had been better. I sat on this one for nearly a year trying to edit it down into something coherent and manageable and I think I got maybe halfway there. I needed to move past this onto other projects, so this is where the video is at. It is a bit long, a bit windy, but I wanted something comprehensive rather than brief.
It's been a 4 year journey to get to this point and I'm happy with where it's at. If you want to see where it all started, I have a playlist of my early work on this project here:

"a bit of force"? I think you will find the holocrons are greatly endowed with the force actually..
This just happened to me tonight, and i got it like 2 to 3 weeks ago. ☹️
email Disney at merchandise.guest.services@disneyparks.com and tell them about the problem. there's a good chance they'll be able to mail you a replacement for free.
@Ruthsarian They said they want to try a replacement blade, but i think they will send the hilt after if the new blade doesn't work.
Is there a way to put a micro sd card on this so you can run any game you want? Could a raspberry Pi be used to make a version of this that runs multiple games?
My mouse is exactly like this one, but there are no screws when I removed the sliding part. Why?
I don’t have a resistance substitution box, is that required or can I somehow use a breadboard to reduce the voltage?
The answer is no, I figured it out.
could you put more LED into the blade with this board?
@@noahfrench2490 technically yes, but I don't think that will do what you're looking for. I think you probably want a neo pixel blade. Here's a video from chrisedge that covers building a neo pixel blade: ua-cam.com/video/ftxNxvhxoQ8/v-deo.html I have an idea on how I would do a neo pixel blade that's a little different and I hope to work on it next year, but for now my attention is on another project.
Thank you for this video! Our holocron battery had completely died and we started charging it and it was red. I didn’t think anything of it until my son was playing with it and it wouldn’t switch to Jedi
A very nice video! Thank you!
Thank u for showing the how to change that always perplexed me
My lightsaber turned my blade red to dark blue a little bit but it turned back to red last time
I've been wondering if anyone has found out how to get it to follow you like the sphero droids did.
Can you do any audio like for instance if i wanted make my Droid sound like Mickey mouse.
@@MightyMorpinMatt yes, any audio
Great video!! repaired my mouse on the kitchen table.
This video was so helpful. Thank you I opened my crystal and unfortunately 1 of the 2 wires to the antenna is disconnected. Do you know if there is a way to connect another wire to the antenna?
I want to thank you for taking the time to share this with us. I am going to Disneyland in a few weeks and I have been searching the internet to try to figure out how to keep my Droid awake while at the park so it can interact with things as it should, and that brought me here. I have an R2 unit that I'll be carrying in an "Industrial Automation" backpack, and I don't want to constantly be having to reach in the peek hole down between his legs to cycle the power switch off and back on again. I don't want it to look like I'm molesting my Droid every time he powers off!😳🤭 So this is a great fix for that.☺ I wonder if just giving him a quick shake would work, or if he really needs to be turned upside down. What do you think? Thanks for the great content!👍
In the parks your droid will stay awake on its own. If a droid "sees" a location beacon, which are all over Galaxy's Edge, then they will stay awake for 6 hours from the point of the last location beacon they encounter. So in the park you're good, they will stay awake the whole time you're there. This mod is more for when you're back at home. A shake, instead of tipping it upside down, may work. It depends on how hard you shake it and the direction of the shaking. But once you get a feel for what shake method works, I think it'd work fine. Have a great trip!
@@Ruthsarian Thanks for the quick reply! That's great information to know. I.ve been obsessing over how I was going to keep him awake while at the park and all I could find was to cycle the power button off and on again. I figured Disney would have addressed this issue while at the park, but I couldn't find any information on it anywhere. One of the best kept secrets I guess. 🤷♂ I even wrote Disney for an answer but I'm still waiting for their response. I'm going to be getting a BB-8 unit soon so R2 has a buddy. Maybe while at the park! So I'll be incorporating your mod in that for sure. 👍Thanks for all your help. Your the best. 😎👌
I'm still enjoying your Droid Toolbox. I recently got the D-O Droid and A-LT Droids at the Droid Depot. It was nice to see the D-O Droid pop up with the "Scanning" option. I noticed the A-LT Droid did display as "Undefined" but I really liked that I was able to go through all of the "Sounds" and hear what the the new A-LT droid sounds were like. Thanks for this great "Droid Toolbox".
what version of droid toolbox are you on? the most recent version (0.73) should know it's an A-LT. If you're on 0.73 and it doesn't, let me know. I don't have an A-LT, but maybe we can troubleshoot it and get it working.
Ok, two part question. Can you reprogram a v2 with a new address 9 AND new address 6. Also, could your reprogram a v1 crystal with both an address 9 options and a NEW address 6 option. Ideal, if this is possible, you could make your own combo that would play your choice voice in series 1 holocron, then a different (but still your choice) voice in series 2 holocron
@@usmcculp yes to both. you can make your own combo.
Incredible work!
Thanks! You have a great voice-over manner
Thank you! Mine just turned Syth ;-)
Thank you for shedding some light on this!! I've wondered for the last 4 years about what type of chips are in simple musical toys basically just like the greeting card. The real simple designs that use R-C oscillators that I can pitch bend by touching it with my finger. This was very interesting to watch!
Thanks for clarifying the left click drag issue. I had assumed it was a bad wireless connection. The problem I'm encountering though is after I disassembled to fix a scrollwheel clog, the Left Button is not clicking both Middle and Left. It's definitely physical, but for some reason every time I reassemble, I can't get the left button to sit right. I can click the left switch itself, but for some reason the shell won't avoid the middle wheel platform. =(
So, I want to turn the switch of a Savi's workshop light saber, into a button. What would you recommend?
@@hamtsammich here's a video that identifies where to solder a switch to: ua-cam.com/video/qIxpKrcnGcQ/v-deo.html while I use a slider switch, you could use a push button switch. your biggest issue is finding a way to mount the switch. either 3D print a new switch plate or drill holes or glue to your existing switch plate. then you have to run the wires to the switch plate. I think it creates a lot of problems if you want to swap crystals as you'll have to be able to remove your new switch plate to insert a new crystal. good luck.
@@Ruthsarian Thank you! That should be a great place to start. I'm presently thinking about a slightly different application. Basically, I want to remove the switch part of the lightsaber, and get it to press a button in the middle of the two pieces. No concern for the crystal required.
Thank you so much. It saved me buying a new chasis. The one thing I would note is that you need to pay attention to the direction and location of the blade connector in the overall sleeve. The blade will only go in one way but the connector can sit in there multiple ways. So make sure you align it before putting it back together. Also the Sleeve over the blade assembly goes on one way as well. So mark them someway prior to removal.
What if your corner was forcefully twisted out of place
I locked one of my crystals with an OBO reader and this was amazingly helpful. I was having trouble with the chipset being read but putting a spoon over the crystal fixed that. My password was one of the known passwords you listed in another comment - 7686962A. Thank you for the great videos!
This spoon trick saved me. I wasted an hour trying to position it before I stumbled across this
This video and comments section is gold. Wish I had thought of looking for a solution last year. Thank you!
I just installed the new switches. Fairly easy to do and the mouse works like new. The original switch is rated for only 50K clicks (very low in my opinion) The Omron D2F-01F is rated for 100K clicks (still not great), hopefully is lasts longer but still repairable. I really love this mouse.
I have repair my mouse with compressd ait, thank you for the tip !
You're permanently saying that microcontroller died. That's because you damaged it?
Great video... this happen to my mouse after about a year and a half put a few pieces of electric tape on top of the clickers and it works again!
Will you ever sell the cards with the SPI chips already attached as well as a custom reader/writer that can seamlessly plug into any USB port to give access to all of the files stored on the chip?
@@quardpd6390 Maybe someday I'll open an online storefront, but for now, if someone really wanted one they could email me and we could figure something out. The USB device you're suggesting would be difficult to make. No such device currently exists and it would require developing a new PCB and writing code to handle both ends of the computer-to-SPI chip for whatever microcontroller is chosen to be in that device. It'd be an interesting project, but it isn't a priority for me.
Worked great for me! I found a little mercury tilt switch to harvest from my box of electronics, taped it on for now because I've lost my soldering iron, lost three screws in the process... But my BB-8 unit doesn't need to be disassembled every time I want to chat with him, so I've got that going for me.
Nice work!!
Thank you for your video. Through this i repaired my mouse saving alot of money. Cheers
Thanks for the video. It was difficult because I'm not used to soldering, but now it works well. What did I learn? 1. I need a good soldering iron 2. I need a better "third hand". 3. I need/want a magnetic mat. 4. I need to stop buying Logitech products. This thing was absolutely overpriced. A $100 mouse that breaks after a year is not acceptable. By the way, I didn't completely remove the sliders. Instead, I used a scalpel to make holes in the plastic strips to get to the screws.
I did this mod and it worked great for powering the droid but the motors aren’t working. I doublechecked all of the connections and everything looks good. Any suggestions? Great content!
The thing is that I can find a better mouse. This is the third one I have to buy in 2 years. I live in Argentina and this mouse costs $150.
I have to thank you for all of the work! I was successful in assembling + and installing one!
Thanks for the video. Got mine working again. Left button is a bit stiff, so I think I put it together slightly wrong lol. But it works. Probably gonna buy a different mouse altogether if it happens again
I literally bought the same size and it doesn’t even fit when I put it on….
Wanting to make my own crystals and program them. How do I write the code for rfid like the one in the video to program the colors. I know practically nothing about coding rfid would love some help!
Tried the soldering, destroyed the left mouse connection. Searched for a replacement board and found one with hot-swappable, no weld micro switches for $11 on aliexpress. Looking forward to getting them installed. Like if you want a video of that install process.
Wish I had found this video earlier, I never even thought to check that one of the batteries was low voltage. I was sure it was the magnetic sensor that broke after I hit something with the saber. I spent an hour and a half disassembling and reassembling both ends of the hilt. I got half way through this video and decided to try and check the battery. My multimeter said it was running at 3.3v and after individually testing all three batts, one of them was at 0.3v. I replaced it and put it back into the saber and everything worked.
Hey Ruthsarian! I have the same mouse but a different problem... and wanted to get your advice on this! My bluetooth turns on and off occasionally and works for sometime and repeats it... would you have any tips on fixing this? It seems like a physical connection issue with a wire or something within the mouse because it's turns on after I disassemble it, but keeps coming up. Thank you!
the antenna is part of the PCB and probably not part of the problem. but if it works when you plug it in, then it might be related to the battery. either the battery itself is going or perhaps the battery connector is loose and needs to be pushed back in. i'd check the battery connection first. then leave it to charge overnight. if the problem still occurs, it might be time to replace the battery. iFixIt has a good page covering how to do that: www.ifixit.com/Guide/Logitech+MX+Vertical+Battery+Replacement/145407
Didn’t work for me
So annoyed with Logitech mice developing this issue so often, like pretty much every Logitech mouse i have got this issue, sometimes after 3 years or sometimes after just a few weeks.
If the jedi turned sith Holocron, as this can turn, is the top and the normal jedi is the bottom; does is have any different dialog than using the normal sith top and normal jedi bottom for the empty bendu? Does it have different dialog if a jedi crystal is in the bottom jedi with sith’s jedi as the empty top?
I would prefer something to hold my Dilithium crystals when not in use. I keep the warp core empty when the ship is dry dock……..
Have no idea what a Kyber Crystal is.
They're used in lightsabers and holocrons that you can buy at Star Wars land at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Kyber_crystal For what it's worth, I have no idea why the UA-cam algorithm is sticking this video into everyone's recommendations. 3.7k views in 5 days is about 20 times my average.
