Making Drawer Supports in Furniture Case Construction

- Metal drawer slides are most commonly installed to support drawers, but you'll still see traditional wood slides used in fine furniture construction. Ernie Conover explains several traditional wood drawer slide support options that, when properly constructed, can operate just as smoothly and effectively as new metal drawer slides.

I’ve watched this video about five times now…this is the content I’m here for.
Finally I found the answers! Nobody talks about this!
This so elegant that I almost weep at the beauty of craftsmanship.
You're right. There's nothing out there that explains this. Great job!!
Thank you! You're right, there is so little information on the framing relative to the drawers themselves. Very helpful
Thank you for taking the time to educate us.
Thanks. I am restoring an old sideboard with a drawer that was not well designed in the first place. Now I can restore it better than new.
Thank you so much! A few weeks ago I actually suggested something like this on another woodworking channel. Now I'm going to subscribe to this one.
This video needs to go viral. There isn't anybody who hasn't screwed this up at least once.
Wow, that was great! It was just about 4 hours short for my taste though.
Your right! Nobody gives this the time it deserves.
Thank you very much! I have to repair a huge drawer of an antique chest that was cut to put a sink in it, so they've cut the drawer in two, keeping the front as it was, but they didn't put rails for each new drawer and they tilt back. That broke the front, and I've already fixed it. Now, thanks to your video, I'll be able to put the rails properly. 😊
Greetings from Argentina.
I feel as if I can make any case and drawer after watching videos like this. Very educational.
Superb , tried and tested designs, this is real cabinet making , thank you sir!
I'm a subscriber because you have one of the bests channels there are. For whatever reason the camera person for this tutorial understood that the close up were good enough, well trust me, they were not.
Amazing information; thank you so much.
Thank you. I learned something today.
A good project with a VERY good teacher. Thank you...
Thanks for the lesson. Just what I was looking for.
Well done, sir, and thank you for shedding light on this constantly overlooked and under-discussed bit of trade craft.
This video is awesome.
Perfect! Thank you..
Thank you very much Sir 👍
Wish I could give more than one thumbs up. So well explained by some one who knows his stuff. This video should have alot more thumbs up.
Watching in 2020! What i was ferreting in the whole net hi ways and here it was! I am in love how this traditional slides works..real craft...savvy!!💖💖
You are a great teacher
Yep. This video was what I was looking for.
Thank you for an awesome video. I love the way you explain things.
thank you
Outstanding presentation! I watched this one a few times. Very well done!
Awesome video! More like this! I really like how you've detailed out some key design options here. Would love to see some videos on various methods to design boxes with inserts and general case construction.
Thanks for the great video. Very well done.
Thank you for this very helpful video!
Terrific video, thank you.
Excellent information and beautiful workmanship. Sir you are top shelf.. Keep making videos
As far as I can tell this is one of two videos on the internet talking about how traditional wood slides work. This and one form wood by write
plus some much needed insight for attaching the support and guides for frame and panel construction. gold mine.
great information. Very practical. Thank you.
A true craftsman!
More Ernie!
I melt/soak bees wax carefully into the wood grain, with a propane torch set low to not scorch the grain, into the sliding friction parts
GREAT VIDEO!
Nice!
Thank you.
This video filled a big hole in content out there and was well done. I'd love to see a deeper dive into the different techniques, especially the first one. Can I be your apprentice, Ernie? :)
i look at these video's for ideas and at long last someone has finally tapered the sides of a drawer. i was taught to do that when training and have always done it. yet as i say i have never ever seen any of these you tube guru's do it. i guess that's the difference between self taught and trained by a craftsman. i actually did a video on planer set up as all the guru's said snipe was normal.... no, its just they don't know how to use the machine.
awesome
So many videos on drawer construction but I have trouble with my cases from time to time, make absolutely sure that every part of your case is square or you will have a headache firing your drawers
Very nice.
the web frames are housed in notches cut in the frame. fasten at the front, free at the back for expansion.
Yes, in the finest of construction the front rail has a tenon and a deeper mortise is chopped in the front posts to house said tenon. This insures that the front rail is locked against the face rails. Complicated joinery but everything can expand and contract but still stay where it should sans glue. The movement is all in the back notches.
Is there a reason the bearer, guides, and kickers can’t all be cut from the same solid piece of wood, rather than gluing them up separately?
It could be but it would be much more work. Also glued up would probably be stronger in most cases.
Can you explain where the kicker goes? My antique dresser draws tip way down as I pull them out and I don't see where this piece needs to he. Thanks 😊
They are placed above the drawer, usually glued to the bottom of the web frame. Depending on the drawer width, there can be one in the middle or two at each edge (for wider drawers).
Interesting points especially relating to the tapered drawers. Titebond 3 Long open time? Under 10 minutes did not seem that much time in a recent complex glue up. Or is there a way to increase this time?
I have a office desk that uses bearers to support the drawers but the bearers have a cove cut in them with the draws sides extended below the back of the drawer. It looks like this eliminates the need for the guides.
finally!
Thanks Ernie. I am making a dresser using the frame construction with web frame panels as you describe in the video. Question, if I make the front face frame with mortise and tenons, the tenon at the front of the carcass will be very close to the tenon you show on the front of the web frame. So the two mortises on the leg are separated by only 3/16" in my layout. Will that be ok? Seems like a delicate bit of mortise cutting.
Hello, nice video by the way. May I ask you something please. I am making a small cupboard and its drawers from birch ply (3/4 inch) , do you think for wooden drawer runners this birch plywood is ok and alsowhat method of runner would you say . ( the drawer is around 36cm deep, 12cm high and 34cm wide approx) Thank you. ps if you are refering to your video can you mention in your reply min/sec in video you are refering too. Thanks once again sir
Thanks for a great video. However, I did not understand the direction of the taper. Is it tapering towards the back or the front? And is the taper in hight or in widt? Cheers.
The back of the drawer is a bit narrower than the front.
@@conoverworkshops1486 Thanks :D
Hi Ernie, thank you for your video it will be very useful, I wanted to ask you about the shaker box you showed in the video, is their any info on a completed one anywhere? Or is it made up in the style of? I would love to build one for a gift! Any help is much appreciated!
Happy Easter, blessings Andy (london) UK.

Can You do a japanese tot called pill And it's the dame like kendama
At last someone offers the full construction of draws. There is no point demonstrating making beautiful draws and then not demonstrate how they get fitted. Thanks
😂
