Did Tomcat Get Its First Kills Before the 1981 Gulf of Sidra Incident? Find Out Now!

  • For a long time, people in the West believed that F-14 Tomcat achieved its first air-to-air victories in August 1981 when two US Navy aircraft shot down two Libyan Su-22s. But by that time, Tomcats in Iranian service had already scored multiple kills. In fact, the first ones were achieved even before the full-scale war with Iraq broke out. Discarded by Western observers as hardly operational, IRIAF F-14s were nevertheless a key factor in the eight year long war. How they achieved their first success and what weapon they used, find out in this video.

Not all the details in this video are 100% historically accurate because of limited assets availability in the platform used for the reenactment. Iranian F-14s don't have IRST, exact variants of Sidewinder missiles are not accessible and Phoenix missile is for some reason represented in grey although it was defined as the A variant in mission editor. If these things bother you, please don't watch.

@Medo Kruško Since the 90´s i read the 10 to 7 in Mi-24 favor, two years ago i buyed "The Iran-Iraq War" by Pierre Razoux a very serious book, in page 572 in the list of air losses and air victories are this numbers
      Iraq helicopters have shot down 20 helicopters 10 AH-1 Cobras, 9 AB-214 and 1AB-205
The book say the IRIAF F-4 shot down 2 Mi-24 and the F-5 12 Hind
      About the iranian AH-1 Cobra say they shot down 4 planes (2 MiG-21, 1 MiG-23 and 1 Su-22) and 25 helicopters (10 Gazelles, 7 Mi-24, 8 Mi-8/17)
Some of the iraqui Mi-24 have eastern german crews.

I believe that F-14 was much more suitable for IRIAF requirements however someone shared with me once an interesting detail. Some years ago during my military service an another conscript who is well into military aviation, told me that during the demonstration of F-14 and F-15 in front of IRIAF high rank officers Grumman staff put limited fuel quantity in Tomcat's tanks. By that way the total weight of the aircraft was significantly decreased and the aircraft's maneuverability was better than expected! And the rest of the Phoenix missiles the IRAN murder regime has, it's been said they have exceeded their lifespan. So it's really doubtful that they will work our days 🤦‍♂ they may have rather just a display purpose.🤷‍♂ The AIM-54 was designed to take out bombers and lacked the manoeuvrability to keep up with modern fighters. Following the Iranian Revolution, the new regime was interested in selling off IIAF's Tomcats. At the same time Canada was looking for a replacement for its CF-101 Voodoo interceptors. Rather than go through a competition involving multiple aircraft types, Canada negotiations were started with the new Iranian government. Things were about to come to a final deal, with the US pleased the F-14's were going to friendly hands, the 'Canadian Caper' came to light. That being six US embassy employees who found safe haven in the Canadian embassy were flown out of Iran. Once that became public, the Canada-Iran deal for the F-14's was cancelled, and in a few years later Canada ended up with the F/A-18, known as the CF-18.

Great video! Something else to add about the Iranian F-14. Many are understandably confused how Iran could keep these complex F-14s flying despite a US arms embargo.
Part of the Grumman F-14 contract was an approximately $200 million support contract. See more from this video: ua-cam.com/video/enaUs3MZX6Q/v-deo.html .
This support deal included civil engineering and upgrade construction of Iranian air bases, local F-14 engine and avionics support facilities , and training of local Iranian personnel. The Shah and Grumman planned for 100% Iranian support of the F-14 program by 1980, so the timing of the Islamic Revolution and subsequent embargo in 1979 was fortuitous for Tomcat operations. Conversely, the McDonnell Douglas F-4D and F-4E Phantoms were heavily reliant on imported parts and suffered from the embargo (until Iran Contra discreetly provided parts). According to Tom Cooper, Iran was down to 3 mission capable F-4Es by 1987.

Actally becouse of sanction of the west against Iran, there were limited phenix missiles available for F14s therefore the Iranian airforce used the F14 just to scare the Iraqis pilots to avoid intering the Iranian air space! Iranian pilots just lock down the missiles system on the Iraqis jets and after Iraqis pilot knew about it, then they turned back and runback to the Iraqis airspace! But sometimes they were useing the American navy ships on the Persian gulf to fly towards thise navy ships and asking the American forces to cover their safity for Iragis pilots and Iranian fighter jets called back and stop the hunting those Iraqis fighter jets!

In Desert Storm, F-15 was way more successful than F-14 but it was mostly due to RoE and other factors (politics?). But it doesn't mean it would have been the same in the Iran-Iraq War. One advantage would have been the availability of assistance from Israel which helped Iran with their Phantoms and could have also helped with F-15s.

XY died in airbattle over YX, sometimes it's even more simplistic. XY died fighting invaders. Also a Fighter pilot called Karaya who flies MiG29 and has an interesting youtube channel, was shot down few weeks ago. He made a selfie with his face covered in blood(although he wasnt baddly injured) But that selfie was the only indicator that one MiG29 got shot down iirc.

'Greetings and many thanks to you and and the admin and respected to him who made this beautiful video clip
It is completely accurate and well-documented in the explanations regarding the signing of the contract for the purchase of Tomcats in two stages and the granting of a 120 million dollar loan by the National Bank of Iran to Grumman for the continuation and completion of the Tomcat project.
In relation to the first conflict between two Tomcats with Iraqi MI8 helicopters and the use of Sidewinder missiles and the failure to hunt helicopters with Sidewinders, it is not true at all Because until January 1982, Iranian Tomcats were only able to carry the Phoenix missile and 660 rounds of ammunition for their Gatlin gun machine guns, and after this date, it was possible to install and use the old Sidewinder G missiles and the old Phantom E3 sparrows on the Tomcats became.
In connection with the subsequent conflict, which was explained to the pilot Mr. Mohammad Reza Atai and accompanied by his rear cabin Behrouz Pashapour, it is completely correct, but as far as I know, the target of his Phoenix missile was an Iraqi MI8 helicopter, which unfortunately did not find any wreckage. In relation to the last conflict, which is related to the servant himself, the narrator's explanation is correct to a large extent, and the rear cabin of the servant in this flight was Mr. Qasim Soltani, because iraqi bomber was bombarding the city of Mehran due to the sensitive position of the Iraqi plane, we forcing to hunt the plane from behind, I became him at a distance of 11 miles, of course, our action to overtake the target aircraft worked correctly, and the Iraqi aircraft's fireball was observed in a very short time and the wreckage of the plane was observed by the head of the air force desk center in the region (captain Iraj Emami). ) from the F-5 master pilots of Dezful base, the agent was found in the area after an hour and was sent to Dezful base by trolley.'

Based on the published research, Iranian F-14 kills appear to be credible. There’s another clue which backs Iranian Tomcat kills- when US F-14s flew in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm, Iraqi Air Force pilots took care to stay far, far away from USN Tomcats. When we consider many of those Iraqi pilots were de facto survivors of the Iran-Iraq war, it lends credence to the notion Iranian Tomcats did a lot of damage

As a matter of fact the casualties in the 8-year war cannot be exactly verified. The Iranian side will keep their records in secrecy and the Iraqi records got lost when the Iraqi Air Force ministery got plundered in 2003. Yet I read a report in a German magazine that confirms your facts. After a short time of trouble during the beginning of the revolution the Iranians managed to keep their F-14s operational throughout the conflict.
