The Only Dogfight of Desert Storm

- The US-led coalition entered the war against Iraq with a healthy dose of respect for their opponents. The Iraqi Air Force had years of actual combat experience and operated some capable fighter types such as MiG-29 and Mirage F1. Initial clashes however demonstrated the superiority of American fighters, especially F-15C and among them, especially the men of the 58th Tactical Fighter Squadron, known as Gorillas. One of its pilots, Capt. Cesar 'Rico' Rodriguez took off from Saudi Arabia on a high-value assets CAP. But changes were made during his sortie and he, along with his wingman Craig 'Mole' Underhill would get involved in what some call the only true turning dogfight of Desert Storm.

I remember seeing this on the history channel's Dogfights series. Now they only talk about alien conspiracies and other unimportant bullshit. Rodriguez is a hell of pilot though. My respects to him.
I guess that's more profitable. I agree on Rico, he's special.
@@showtime112 The fact the it's more profitable says a lot about the consumer.

@@showtime112 This was not the only dogfight of the gulf war. On February 19th a kill was falsely attributed to SA 2. Two falcons were intercepted by fulcrums over baghdad, one of them escaped and the other one was never heard from. There was also a B 52 lost over the gulf, another hornet lost over the water, and an A 6 and any of these could be unreported air to air kills.
@@showtime112 there's a pair of F-15E gotten into dogfight with mig-29 but unable to acquire lock for the AIM-9M due to AN/APG-70 software issue. The Iraqi Mig-29 was later splashed by F-15C that came to aid the F-15E

He was both a tough and skilled pilot. A snap salute to him.

Rico's daughter would earn a Comission in the Air Force as an Air Battle Manager - an AWACS controller. I was an instructor at Tyndall when she was a student in the 9 month Formal Training course. He came and gave a Keynote address at her graduation. We had seen 4 Star Generals, and actual celebrities come as honored guests to graduation ceremonies before. But none of them got the rock-star reception from everyone in attendance that Rico did!
I didn't know that, thanks for contributing info!

There is an Iraqi channel run by a former Iraqi pilot. He has a lot of videos interviewing pilots involved in dogfights and air missions from the Iran war to the 1991 Gulf war, unfortunately his videos aren't translated so its not really available for a wider audience but nonetheless his videos are really interesting and detailed.
He should consider doing English subs at least. Shouldn't be too hard to find someone who can do that.
What's the channel name? Even if it's only in Arabic.
@@showtime112 The guys pretty old guessing that he served the IrAF in the Baathist era, his editing skills are basic as well so he doesn't really get much recognition even amongst Iraqi audience, that and most Iraqis have long forgotten those wars. Thanks for the positive feedback! Not yet sure about the MiG-25 success against F-18. MiG-25 in DCS is AI only. At least, ED should update its external model which is low polygon and at least ten years old.

The dogfight scene was even better due to the new DCS fire effects and I really liked the aileron roll you did above the runway, I expected you to land normally but then I realised that this is DCS and you can do whatever you want in it even if it violates countless flight safety rules :)

Very impressive.
Yes, that is simulated in the game.

Visually identifying enemy MiG-29s sound like quite a harrowing task!
Under certain circumstances, it isn't easy. They also had trouble identifying MiG-25 from certain angles.
Proof that the dogfight is over today. All battles are fought from afar with missiles!
Magnificent aircraft.
I agree!
To be fair the Iraqis must have had some very competent pilots with good combat experience against Iran. You need all those awacs and much more to fully control an arial battlespace though. Poor guys.
Nah they deserved it
Zombie WMDs killed them.
All the odds were against them from the beginning, the coalition had the quantity and quality. Iraq's poor leadership doomed a country that would've remained a dominant regional power for decades.
I LOVE the opponent who agreed...
Who made these film. You have you privet plan to take videos
It doesn't really look THAT realistic! 😁
In my opinion this is better than History Channel Dogfights version of it.
For one, the graphics are much better and the F-15 doesn’t look like a half polygon half clay model. And besides the modern Air Force logo you actually got the tail marking right! History channel reused the F-15 CG model from their Yugoslavia episode so the Eagles all had LN tail codes from the 493rd FS.
Thanks for the feedback! CGI made a lot of progress since the time of Dogfights. You have a commercially available simulation which looks better running on an average PC than what was then a professional production. I also noticed in an episode or two that tail codes were not exactly accurate in the show. Funny, you'd think they had guys who did the research.
I distinctly remember hearing the audio back then from a Saudi fighter pilot as he smoked an Iraqi fighter, "BANDIT DESTROYED! BANDIT DESTROYED!!!". The guy was totally overjoyed!
True. It doesn't happen every day 😉

This should be a lot more frequent from now on.
Strictly speaking, this wasn't the only turning dogfight in Desert Storm. If memory serves correctly (and it usually does), one US FB-111 crew was credited with a "maneuvering kill" against an Iraqi Mirage F-1, thus making them the only Aardvark crew ever credited with an air-to-air kill!🤣
From what I read about the encounter, an Aardvark was bounced by a hostile Mirage F-1. During the ensuing fracas, they somehow managed to make the Iraqi pilot fly right into the ground! I'd love to see a recreation of that particular fight!🤣
Strictly speaking, this might not be the only dogfight of DS. Sadly, unless you make your video titles bombastic, people just ignore them. As for that EF-111 kill, it's controversial. It seems that Capt Graeter was credited with it, along with another 'hard' Mirage kill minutes before. Graeter claims there were no EF-111s in the area at the time.

Depending of the definition of the dogfight, we can call the air combat between two F-15 Eagles and two MiG-25PD, 19 Jan 1991, all the kills were achieved well within visual range. US pilots stated afterwards this MiG-25 pilots were very skillful, knew how to break the lock to come to the merge and combat was tough requiring many AA missiles to be fired.

Bee maneuver? F15 blind spot? Could someone point me to more information about this?
It's actually 'beam' maneuver, not bee. It's not just a problem for the F-15s but any aircraft which uses pulse-doppler radars. They have problems detecting targets which move perpendicularly to their own movement. Essentially, when detected try turning 90 degrees against them and they might loose you.

Sir...That is not the only dogfight in gulf war ii ..you forget the one when the American fighter f18 super hornet was shot down by air to air missile( r40rd 29km away ) with it pilot, Captain mechael Scott speicher who killed in the first day of gulf war1991. By mig25 and captain zuhair dawood
The word 'dogfight' does not mean any clash between two or more aircraft. It only refers to close, visual range fight when opponents can see each other and they maneuver hard to get into a good position to attack with missiles or guns. If a missile is launched from 29 km away, that really isn't a dogfight. There is another Desert Storm encounter which could be called that (F-15s led by Rick 'Kluso' Tollini against MiG-25s but you really need to have bombastic titles to get your videos noticed. With a 100% accurate title, the video would probably have about ten thousand views.
Yea u right

Imagine experienced/skilled pilot in that Mig29 and with awacs support. Neusporedivo.

Theoretically, yes. I don't yet have a proper tool to do something like that. There's software called Tacview which records movements form DCS and presents them in 3D but often, these scenes are patched from many small ones and it wouldn't work properly.
split s at a 1000 feet what a crazy pilot
That was probably a panic move.
I am sorry to correct that there were at least two dogfights during Desert Storm. There was one when a MiG-25 shot down an F-18 in Western Iraq.
You seem to think that any shootdown is a dogfight. The shootdown of Scott Speicher by an Iraqi MiG-25 was definitely not one. It was just a ground controlled intercept. The only aerial clash in Desert Storm that comes close is when F-15s led by 'Kluso' Tollini shot down Iraqi MiG-25s. Everything else was just intercepts.
I think that was more of a BVR kill than a dogfight. And besides, the Mig-25 is not a dogfighter. It's too bulky and heavy for the tight turns and maneuvering needed for close in dogfighting. It was designed to be a long range high speed high altitude supersonic interceptor. Its job was get high as fast as possible, intercept and destroy enemy aircraft at long range, and return to base.
@@tsepheletseka5115 Exactly!
That’s were your wrong
You seem to think you know everything about a war, that happened more then 30 years ago. Have you been present, when the F-18 was downed? Do you think the pilot did not try to evade the R-34 missile? I got my information from a German special air journal, having access to Iraqi sources. To claim there was only one dogfight to bring down the whole Iraqi air force is bullsh**.
And then he woke up with sticky sheets and realised it was all a dream
Oh, you are one of those who believe that Desert Storm was a big victory for Iraq I guess.
Very well done. It really gives you a clear view of how stupid the rules of engagement were. Also seeing a 30 year old "modern" dogfight from the cockpit illustrates how worthless the gun is.

Sometimes, yes. But generally, they were more intercepts than dogfights. However, it will be extremely interesting to analyze the current conflict in Ukraine and see what was really happening there.
@@showtime112 yes, hoping to get a proper analysis of the Russian Ukraine 2022 air combat too .
I doubt that much air to air combat occurred on fair terms between UA and RU fighters, given UA’s relegation to R-27 use, but MiG-29s probably downed a considerable number of helicopters or Su-25s.

Thanks for the comment!
Can remember a story about a Saudi F-15 pilot that downed two Iraqi planes during Desert Storm, is that story up?
Yes, two Mirage F1s. I didn't cover that story. Another channel did but I might give it a shot someday.
Why do Migs always get shot down?
Not exactly true, MiGs shot down plenty of aircraft in the Korean and Vietnam wars. And somewhat less in Arab-Israeli wars.
I BEEN TO THE DANGER ZONE! ⚠️
I don't think that's right. I specifically remember watching a dogfight over our camp on the Saudi, Kuwait border. And there were two of the first gen stealth fighters (F111a I think). I couldn't see what they were fighting, but they were fighting something unless they were firing missiles at nothing.
I haven't found any info about any clash between Coalition and Iraqi airplanes on the border with Kuwait. And F-111 was definitely not a stealth airplane. What you saw might have been air to ground missiles of some kind.
@@showtime112 what myself and our entire company saw was definitely the F-111. You just cant misidentify that plane with all of the triangular surfaces. Either that or there was an alien invasion on the first night of the war. Everyone in my unit or at least platoon saw it go down.
I was wrong about the aircraft though. F-117 not the F-111
didnt an ef-111 also have a dogfighht?
Yeah although it is questionable according to some sources. Besides, you need to give videos bombastic titles, otherwise they are just ignored.
@@showtime112 from what i heard they were jamming for another squad and they were attacked by migs and one of the migs crashed and the ef-111 was credited with the kill and the other i think was killed by an f-15. if i remember correctly thats the jist of it lol
