  • Assalamoalikum everyone! In today’s video, I will show you how to steam a silk painted scarf using a pressure cooker. Steaming is an essential process to permanently fix silk paints or dyes, ensuring vibrant and long-lasting results on your fabric. This step-by-step method will help you steam silk quickly and effectively at home, saving both time and effort.
    What you will learn in this video:
    Preparing your silk for steaming by carefully wrapping it in layers of newsprint to protect against moisture and prevent color bleeding.
    Setting up the pressure cooker with a metal stand, water level precautions, and proper heat adjustments.
    Tips on timing, including how long to steam and the cooling process for optimal results.
    Washing and drying the steamed silk to maintain color and softness.
    Important considerations when using silk paints or dyes.
    This process takes approximately 25-30 minutes of steaming time, and by using a pressure cooker, you achieve the high temperature required for fixing colors in a shorter time. Remember, if you are trying this for the first time, you may wish to test with a smaller silk sample.

    Thanks for watching! I want share 2 important points here
    1- While ironing is effective, sometimes the gutta (resist) doesn’t fix properly, especially after washing. Steaming gives a more thorough and long-lasting fixation, ensuring the colors and outlines stay intact.
    2- If you haven’t tried this steaming method yet, I recommend testing it on a small sample with your silk dyes. If it works, it can save you time and provide more durable results compared to just ironing.

    Can we take out the whistle from the lid before we keep the bowl inside the cooker?

    • @abidzcraft
      @abidzcraft  Місяць тому

      Yes, both options are possible, but each has its own considerations:
      With Whistle (Recommended):
      Keeping the whistle on ensures the cooker generates high-pressure steam, which creates higher temperatures and steams the silk more quickly and efficiently. This method is ideal for setting colors faster. Use a low to medium flame and monitor the process carefully. Ensure there’s enough water to produce steam throughout the steaming time.
      Without Whistle:
      If you prefer to remove the whistle, the steam will escape gradually, creating a gentler steaming process. However, this method requires:
      Add extra water to avoid the cooker drying out during the longer steaming process.
      Handle the cooker carefully as hot steam will escape continuously. Ensure the lid is properly sealed, and do not let the water level drop.
      Since the temperature is lower, you'll need to extend the steaming duration.
      Both methods work, but using the whistle is faster and more efficient. If you choose to remove it, plan for a longer steaming process and take all necessary safety measures.

    ❤Thanks Abid . Can we steam pigments too.
    As so far I know , only silk dyes are steam fixed .
    Kindly , elaborate .

      @abidzcraft  Місяць тому +1

      You're welcome.
      No, pigments can not be fixed by steaming. They sit on the fabric surface and require heat-setting with an iron or heat press, not steam, to bond properly.

      Thank you for your question! The steaming process usually takes around 30-45 minutes for the colors to set and come alive. Make sure the pressure cooker is on medium heat throughout, and keep an eye on it to avoid overheating. Once done, let the scarf cool down completely before unwrapping for the best results

    Which silk dye did you use? Silk paint like pebeo silk or other silk dye?
    I have seen many people do steaming like 2-3 hours while using silk dye techniques or Serti Techniques Silk dye. I'm very confused please clear it

    • @abidzcraft
      @abidzcraft  Місяць тому

      Thank you for your question! I understand the confusion. In a pressure cooker, because the heat is much higher, both silk dyes and silk paints typically only need 30-45 minutes of steaming to set the colors, instead of the 3-4 hours used in a regular pot.
      To be sure about the result, I recommend testing on a small piece of silk first. Try applying silk dyes in random colors and steam it for 30-45 minutes in the pressure cooker, and you should see that the colors set well in that time. This method should solve the confusion and help you determine the right time for your specific process.
      Feel free to experiment and let me know how it turns out

    Y do we need to do this lengthy process when we can fix silk paints with ironing

    • @abidzcraft
      @abidzcraft  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you for your question! While ironing is a common method to set silk paints, it's important to understand that sometimes the gutta (resist) doesn't fix properly with just ironing, especially when it's exposed to washing or if the gutta application wasn't perfect. Some people experience the gutta coming off after washing, which can be frustrating. The steaming method, like the one shown in my video, provides a more thorough and long-lasting fixation of both the paint and the gutta. It ensures that the colors stay vibrant and the outlines remain intact, even after multiple washes.
      Additionally, I recommend trying a small test sample with the steaming method and comparing it with your usual ironing technique. If it works well with silk dyes, you'll save time in the long run by using a process that guarantees better results. It's all about experimenting with what works best for your materials and achieving the most durable outcome for your silk paintings.

      @abidzcraft thankyou so much for explaining in detail.

    • @nanarodrigues7243
      @nanarodrigues7243 Місяць тому +2

      It depends on the type of paint. The best paint for silk painting is steam-fixed paint because it leaves absolutely no texture on the silk. The fabric retains its natural feel, and some effects can only truly be achieved with this type of paint.

    • @abidzcraft
      @abidzcraft  Місяць тому

      @@nanarodrigues7243 You're absolutely right! Steam-fixed silk paints and dyes are ideal because they preserve the natural softness and flow of the fabric. I agree that after steaming, the silk retains its smooth, silky texture, enhancing the overall feel and vibrancy of the artwork. For those who want that perfect, seamless finish, steam-fixed dyes are a must!
