For the next one, could you you try roleplaying as a raider? Militarist, authoritarian, Xenophobe, with oligarchic authority, and civics are Barbaric Despoilers and slaver guilds and use habitat start. The goal is to ally with no one, steal and enslave pops from every other empire and reduce them all to tiny rump states of a couple planets. You can make everyone join a hegemony, and once you become totally in charge, abuse a combo of kicking members out and then using the join or die CB as an excuse to go in, steal most of their pops and keep them in line. Use planets for your enslaved pops, and habitats for your main species. Beyond that, go nuts. Edit: thoughts on species traits: nonadaptive is a freeby for this one, so take that one. Idk what other traits would be good. Edit 2: rapid breeders might be good to counteract the void dwellers downside? Idk if strong and one of the research boosters or intelligent would be better. Definitely want to go the genetic engineering route with this and specialize species. Make your original species into perfect leaders, and have livestock+lithoid slaves on multiple thrall worlds to make minerals, food and rare resources.

You should do a run as a "puppet master" driven assimilator. You would sweep in and assimilate an empire and release them as a vassal with their husks of their former selves.

I love how most people pick either ringworlds or arcologies. Me on the other hand, have most planets as ecumonopolis' and have a few ringworlds for food and science.
My favourite thing to do is in the late game have a lot of Ecumonopolae, a few planets for mining and a lot of habitats for more mining and refineries, ring worlds are an extra but it’s also nice to have them
Latharik to truly turtle up you need giant shell - the Birch world from Gigastructural engineering mod - build it at galactic core, settle thousands of faithful there and watch the faithless burn P.S. Same mod also allows making/breaking of hyperlanes - if you want completely cut off the rest of galaxy...

I have been playing with a very, very similar set up (Ruined Ring World, Megachurch, Authoritarian-Spiritualist-Xenophile). My beginning rush is to sell off everything to get 500 energy and clear the Volatile Motes tunnel immediately. Once you have the motes enact the Volatile Land Clearance edict to make the other two tunnels faster and cheaper. You should easily have 2000 minerals accumulated for the commercial district. I then rush a research district.
My fanatic materialist Megacorp, has been flexible enough to convert to spiritualist with gospel of the masses. For some reason, I have hit this twice in 3.0 play throughs, it's interesting to see the effect of different ethics in options. Then the amenities & ethics conversion is a help, I am a little bemused by psionic route though, there's a gradual shift but I don't need more unity, consecrating worlds adds to it, yet I finished every tradition decades before 2350.
Love your playthrough videos! I think itd be a great idea to use past playthroughs Empires in the next one to see some of your others in the same galaxy :)
The game is too simplistic and restrictive to be used as mirror of real world ideologies and views of a person which may, should and will wary all over political and socio-economical spectrum depending on situation, mood and day of the week.
The thing about the commerce trial was that just to participate you needed to have a system with 50+ trade value. Your "Ally" didn't have 50+ trade value, therefore he couldn't participate. Which means that you were the only one participating so it was a total success.
