Actually David Crystal talks about it that native speakers are not the best teachers at all. Normally those who have learnt the language as a second language know the most for hard work. This video was very helpful.

Great explanation. Even though I’m learning from a native French speaker, it takes a British person to explain it in a way a British person can understand perfectly. You’ve done that for me in 8 minutes.

The overriding message from the language learning companies and industry is "learn from a native. it's the best way to go!". But learning a language involves overcoming many different challenges. Some of which a native is perfectly suited for, and some of which, someone who speaks your native language (I assume yours is English?) is better placed due their experience.
      Happy to have helped :)

to be fair, I teach English as a second language, but I have also STUDIED how to teach English as a second language. I think being able to speak a language and being able to teach a language are two different things. That's why it's always good to work on conversation with natives, but don't expect every native to be able to explain the grammar concept. In fact, I primarily teach elementary/beginner English. Not c1.c2 because there are concepts I don't actually KNOW how to teach. But I still get lesson requests... asking me for advanced english and I have to explain I can't, or other things like tofel, toeic, ielts... I JUST DONT KNOW!

Hi. As a native French speaker, I think you pretty much nailed it.
The way we are taught grammar in school is IMO a lot more convoluted than how French grammar is structured for English/other speakers ^_^ e.g. We say "complément d'objet direct/indirect" instead of just "direct/indirect object", also our verb tenses have strange names even though they may correspond one-to-one to a tense in other European languages that have a different name). That's just two examples of needless complications, and this is one of the reasons why we have trouble explaining it to learners.
However now that I delved into Spanish and German, it's much easier to pinpoint the right words to use, and the right way to explain things to be more in line with common elements of other European languages. I wish their was a standards body in Europe to define a common method and vocabulary for teaching grammar in all European languages. This way it would be very simple to draw parallels and find the equivalent concepts/words to use when learning another language.

Jeez, I've been here for 20 years & never could get a straight answer from a French person. I knew by example that lui went with donner, & I pretty much inserted le, la & les in the others.

Funny that, in my case, I always translated the sentence back to my language (Portuguese), and if the pronoun before the object was "lhe/lhes", I'd use "lui/leur", but if the pronoun was "lo/la/los/las", I'd use "le/la/les". Some would argue that it is not a good idea to learn French (or any language) from a non-native speaker.
The good part of learning tricks from a non-native is they might have ideas that a native speaker wouldn't even think about.
It is because, like the video said, we tend to take our own language for granted so we do not need tricks.
A lot of french instructors on youtube DO mention these tips, but they are kind of "buried" to the point that they are easy to miss.
    In any case, excellent vid.

At least from my childhood at primary school right through the educ system for English in New Zealand we really didn't get taught any English grammar or the 'metalinguistic terminology' for any grammar. So past the point of what is a verb, noun ,adjective, then maybe what a pronoun, preposition,, most people don't know grammar of English and then learning another language is tougher at highschool because we don't know what a InT verb or a T verb , IO or DO, stem root aux verbs... it's all a mystery to most... I was 25y at uni doing a post grad DipTESOL before I got any introduction to advanced grammar of English. So now explaining English to new EFL/ESOL learners I never use the grammar terminology.

J'ai une question: avec le mots reflexive; where does the "le, la, les ou lui, leur" go? pour example: je lui me regarde ou je lui suis me regardé; je ne suis lui pas me regardé.. just not sure the order when working with reflexive and passe compose.. Merci!

Merci énormement, que je me mets en colère souvent avec cet ennuni. You have helped me very much here! How did you know that many of us have this problem? Often it's clear for me which one to use but there is always that one that comes along. Elle a dû lire les journaux; je les lui ai montés à neuf heures. I knew there must be a rule i could follow, and i did not know about the verbs with no preposition= le, la etc. Compter, Manger, Regarder etc. Every now and then a breakthrough with French like the conditionnel passé. A tip for you sir-in Paris a small family run hotel $ is the Hotel Jean Bart sur la rue Jean Bart bien sur! Thank you.

Today I met with my French group and I wrote this sentence je lui ai convaincu d’acheter le livre . I found out it is supposed to be written as je l’ai convaincu d’acheter le livre. My issue is I don’t know which verbs take the direct or indirect object. Any tips and tricks ?

Hey, what song did you use in ur intro? just wondering because I've been looking for a particular type of music but can't seem to find it... the tune in ur video sounds nice tho, it would be really helpful if you could tell me what it's called. Thanks.
