I tell my friends all the time that Duolingo is not enough because it doesn’t teach the “why” insofar as grammar, whenever someone asks me about the why of french pronouns, I will definitely show them this video. Thanks for the awesome vid, brb gonna go watch the y/en explanation now!

Very well explained. This is exactly how the teacher explained the order of French pronouns to my class of 11 year olds, back in 1955, in England. We were told to think of the table as a hockey or football team, with five forwards, three mid-fielders, two backs, and a goalie, leaving “en” standing behind the goal (he was a photographer, or the referee, I think). We learned to recite “me te se nous vous before le la les, before lui leur, before y, before en, before the verb” and it stuck! My love of French started that year, and eventually led to a degree, a career teaching French (including to native speakers), and retirement in a beautiful medieval village with a vew of the Mediterranean. I still think of my first French teacher with gratitude.

I found it helped to consider the common prepositions used by the most common verbs (parler: à, de, avec, or just le/la) and the diffetent use-cases (à vs avec, y vs lui...) and how they differ from English.... even though slang French (joual, argot...) often mis-uses them anyway. Better to master a few verbs (and the common tenses) then add to them as opposed to going nuts on the overall grammar programme. Having said that, for someone prepping for a French grammar test, the video is great.

These are really helpful. Thank you. I'm Canadian and can "get by" in french but I'm working on improving my grasp of the language. I'm starting adult learning french classes in the autumn. There are six levels/semesters to get you to C1. I reviewed the syllabus and I already know everything in level 1, so I'm begining at level 2 in September. My final semester will be ending April 2026.
All the best jobs here 🇨🇦 go to bilingual (B2-C2) applicants, even if they have less seniority/experience. I'm working hard to reach B2-C1 by the spring of 2026. I did one of those free online assessments and it says I'm at A2-B1 now. I've also been doing Duolingo and Rocket french for 6 weeks now. I didn't skip any Duolingo levels but I flew through the first 3 sections (there are 8 sections in total) in a month. It was pretty basic stuff. Now I'm half-way through section 4 "Trailblazer" and I have to slow down because it REALLY is new territory.
Duolingo is fun, but I know I need more than that. Rocket french is excellent at explaining the grammar rules, which I REALLY appreciate. The exercises test your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
I'm looking forward to the in-person classes. I'll get to practice and the instructor can correct any errors. These courses touch on reading and writing but the emphasis will be on speaking and comprehension.

I’m of an age where even remembering all the grammar terms in English is a problem, let alone knowing what they are in French!!!😅Whether I’ll remember is another thing😂 however, I think if I repeat this one lesson a few times (repetition is key) it may sink in long enough to put it into practice. 8:30 Some other thing to note here is that "Call" would translate better to "Appeler", because "Téléphoner" is more specific and, honestly quite a mouthful.
"J'appelle quelqu'un" to mean "Je téléphone à quelqu'un" is perfectly acceptable and common
edit: Oh 16:32, "pas" is absolutely AFTER the verb. "Je ne lui en veux pas" -> "I do not blame him (about it)"

    A few subtleties:
Je téléphone à Kyle et à Vanessa (meaning two separate phone calls)
Je téléphone à Kyle et Vanessa (can be separate phone calls or not)
J'envois là balle à (to) Vanessa
-> Je lui (any gender) envois la balle
J'envois la balle vers (toward) Vanessa
-> J'envois la balle vers elle
The indirect pronouns me/te/lui/nous/vous/leur placed before the verb really only replace the indirect objects introduced by "à"
For the indirect objects introduced by another preposition (vers,chez,...) you will usually uses a subject pronoun placed after the preposition, you have to use moi,toi,lui/elle,nous,vous,eux/elles
    But...
Je prends la pomme de Jérôme / je prends la pomme appartenant à (belonging to) Jérôme --> Je prends sa pomme (you have to use a possessive pronoun when that initial pronoun indicates a possession)
Je prends la pomme à Jérome (I take the apple from Jérôme)
-- je lui prends la pomme (I take the apple from him / I take the apple and Jérôme is the currently holding it.) (there i no indication of ownership here)
-- je lui prends sa pomme (I take his apple from him)
    - je prends sa pomme (among the multiple available apples, I take the one he is holding. No indication of absolute ownership in this case)
    ---------------
    Je vais y voyager
The liaison between vais and "y" is facultative.
    "Y" can be indefinite:
    - Je vais y aller
"y" can refer to a place previously name or the whole expression can just mean "I'm about to go (away) / I'm about to leave".
    You can also say
    - Je vais m'en aller
Here you have to consider '"s'en aller" as a reflexive verb meaning "to leave".
